What is The Fedora Lounge?
This swanky venue resembles a 1930s-40s club comprised of like-minded people who share an interest and passion in the "Golden Era." So, stop on in, pull up a chair, order a drink and discuss the finer things in life, from cars to hats and clothes, music, aircraft, WWII, movies, and more.
What is the history of The Fedora Lounge?
MK created The Fedora Lounge in May 2003 and says about those days: "In the beginning we had a funky board on Ez-board. There were just a handful of us and we developed the categories and worked on the look and feel. I like many aspects of the Golden Era, but I am a really big fan of film noir, especially Bogart and Ladd. The blueprint we followed was an old world gentlemen's club. A classy place where you can discuss issues of the day in a civilized way over brandy and a good cigar."
By August of 2003, The Fedora Lounge had grown to a hundred members or so. MK could tell that the place was catching on, so he invested some dough and time, bought the relevant domain names and created a professional and robust board with vbulletin to provide more control and stability.
The Lounge gained 30-40 people a month for a year or so. Then MK discovered Atomic magazine and contacted Leslie, the Editor-in-Chief. MK is also a magazine publisher who loves vintage/retro so he and Leslie got along famously. Unfortunately Atomic magazine folded, but Leslie put our banner on their Web site and the people who were going through withdrawal of no magazine visited here. Our growth accelerated to 100 members or more a month. MK also notes: "Up to that time we only had two ladies here. A lot of our subsequent growth has been women. That changed the tone a bit, but in a good way. It made us more well rounded."
The growth has continued as the word has spread to various vintage circles -- WWII reenactors, hat lovers, classic car guys, swing dancers, classy dressers, history buffs, collectors of all kinds, and people who just love the Golden Era.
As of this writing (December 2008) we have more than 10,000 members, and we are adding around 200 members each month. This is great news, as more members create more content and intelligent discussion. Of course, the large influx of new members did cause some growing pains, especially with regard to hosting and the conduct of members. We handled the former with technical aplomb and the latter by establishing and enforcing some reasonable, but appropriate member "guidelines."
We look forward to reading each of your well thought-out and insightful posts. Together, we will continue to build The Fedora Lounge into the Internet's premier Golden Era destination. Welcome aboard!
Conduct expected of members:
Members are expected to treat each other and the Bartenders with respect. For the most part, this is not a problem, as the vast majority of our members are well-reasoned, good-natured adults. However, there may be times when a Bartender has to step in and stop a ruckus (delete/edit posts), or lock things down to allow a "cooling off" period. If you believe that you have been treated unfairly, take it up with the Bartender in a private message ( PM). If the Bartender's response does not satisfy you, you may take it up with MK, the Guy in Charge.
A few recommendations:
If you don't like what you see in the subject line then do not click on the link.
If you don't want to see dogfights then don't start them or participate in them.
If something makes you see red then don't instantly hit the reply button. Stop and think first.
If some one rubs you the wrong way or makes it personal, contact the Bartender of that section and inform them of what is happening. Don't take it upon yourself to berate the person back and cause a flame war.
Why can't I register with a free e-mail address?
As stated in bold red letters on the main page and on the application form, we don't accept applications with addresses from non-ISPs (such as Yahoo, Hotmail, gmail, etc.). This policy is one that some respectable message boards are now adopting in order to provide a safe online environment. Be doing this, it cuts down on spam and there is more accountability. Anyone can have dozens of free e-mail accounts with total anonymity. By requiring our members to register with an address from their ISP, work address or a domian they own, it means that our members have chosen to be a little more forthcoming about their identity. This is not to say those that use free e-mail are less trust worthy. It's just that trouble makers rarely are willing to have any accountability. This has been our policy since we first began back in 2003.
If you have an e-mail address from your ISP (e.g. Comcast, Earthlink, Mindspring, etc), or from work, please register with that e-mail address. Don't worry about spam; we won't give your address to anyone. If you already applied with a free e-mail address, your account will be automaticaly deleted so that you can start over, but don't be discouraged. If you love the Golden Era of the 1930s-40s, The Fedora Lounge is worth the effort. Thank you for understanding.
Can I change my e-mail address in my profile?
Yes, you can, but be careful. When you do, your account will have to go through the approval process just as if you were applying for the first time. Your account will be on hold until approved. WARNING: If you enter a free e-mail address the board will automatically delete your account along with all your posts. There is no way to undo this.
Why can't I post?
Make sure you are logged in and that your browser is accepting cookies. If you applied for membership you should have received a e-mail verification. You have to respond to that e-mail and follow the instructions to complete your application. If you entered a free e-mail address when you applied, your application will be declined. (See above)
Why can't I send a private message (PM)?
Make sure you are logged in and that your browser is accepting cookies. When someone first joins they are a "Registered Member". When they have 15 or more posts then they become a "Fully Fledged" member and will be able to have private message privileges. This keeps trouble makers from just starting a new account to PM someone or otherwise "stir the pot." It also keeps people with sales agendas -- who aren't really interested in being part of our community -- from just marketing to our members.
How do I attach a photo?
Follow these simple steps:
1. Upload your image to a server. You can use either your own ISP (internet service provider) or image hosting sites such as: http://system.freepgs.com; www.fotki.com; or www.photobucket.com.
2. Once you have uploaded your photo and can see it in your browser, put your cursor over the photo and right click. Select properties, which will show you the Internet "address" of the photo. Highlight this address and copy it.
3. To attach the image to a post at The Fedora Lounge, start a post and click on the little image icon -above the text field. A pop up box will allow you to paste the address of your image. When you are finished, Click "ok." The photo will appear with your post. Only certain types of files may be attached: these are the valid file extensions for files to be attached to this forum.
After posting, the attachment will show up in the body of your message. To view the contents of the attachment (if it is not already displayed) simply click the filename link that appears next to the attachment icon:

How do I add an avatar?
Avatars are not to be larger than 150 X 150 pixels. These are the steps to follow:
1. Click on "User CP". It's found along the blue bar at the top of your screen.
2. On the left margin, click on "Edit Avatar."
3. You will see two bullets. Click the one that says, "Use Custom Avatar."
What is the "New Posts" link all about?
If you are a member and you are not using the "New Posts" link on the blue bar at the top of the main page, you are missing out! Click on this link to see all of the threads that have new posts since your last visit. (Pretty nifty, huh?)
Guidelines to posting
The Fedora Lounge may do things a little differently than you are used to at other forums:
We strongly encourage you to search old threads for the info you are seeking first before starting a new thread. If you find an old thread that you want to add to, please do so and bump it. We like to keep discussions consolidated and ongoing - it makes it easier to search for info later.
When quoting a post and adding your content, please remove picture links. If you have a specific picture you are addressing with your own comments, please keep only that specific picture in your post, if it is truly needed, and trim out all others. This saves space, and has some mercy on your fellow Loungers who must otherwise scroll through numerous copies of the same image.
What is the policy with respect to nudity?
No nudity is permitted on this site. Period. In addition, since we cater to people with a love for past eras -- regardless of age -- please make sure when you post a lingerie link, or any other link to check out the content of the "linked" site. We know this can be a bit of a gray area, but please make sure that there is no nudity (especially exposed breasts) allowed to be shown or linked to from our site. While we know the value and benefits of wearing things like garter belts, stockings, long line bras, and girdles, unfortunately these are seen by the vast majority today as fetish items. If the people of the Golden Era could show these items tastefully, so can we! So please check out the sites before you link to them. We have numerous younger readers and posters here, and we try to keep the joint "family friendly."Think Hays Code.
What is the policy with respect to profanity?
Profanity, while not outright banned, is highly discouraged. Profane language will usually be edited out by a Bartender. Ladies and gentlemen, by definition of the words, do not engage in base or degenerating activity, of which profanity can be both.
What is the policy on politics?
Outright political discussions are not allowed. You can talk about events, debate history, and compare notes on the interesting things that happen in your lives as always. The Bartenders are the sole arbiters of what is appropriate. Do not be offended if your thread is deleted - they are just doing their job.
What guidelines govern the Powder Room?
The Powder Room is for ladies. It's okay for gentlemen to post in the Powder Room so long as it's tasteful, the exceptions being lingerie links and links that no "gentleman" has any business visiting (yes, that's a little subjective). Men who post lingerie links will probably have purses and/or shoes thrown at them, followed by having their posts summarily deleted. Scofflaws will ultimately receive a knuckle-wrapping admonishment via PM, unless more severe action is warranted. Ladies deserve some privacy in particular threads and this right to privacy will be respected.
What are the Classifieds?
This forum is for individual private members to sell items they no longer wish to own. Vendors are not permitted to post there.
What about advertising?
Companies are not allowed to promote their goods, have signatures or post in the classified forum unless they are a sponsor. Companies who help support this joint through advertising through banners or Classic Style magazine are called Vendor/Sponsors and do have that priviledge provided it is not over done. Also Vendor/Sponsors can post in the merchants forum. If this is something you are interested in, contact MK for details: mk@thefedoralounge.com
What is the policy regarding free speech?
Free speech is sacred on the street corner. The Fedora Lounge is not a democracy. It is a privately owned club. Brick and mortar clubs have boards for placing announcements and messages. Messages that are offensive or in bad taste are taken down. At a classy lounge, patrons are not allowed to cause a ruckus. Those that refuse to comply with the rules of conduct are shown the door. Expect the same here. The owners of The Fedora Lounge reserve the right to remove, edit, move or close any post or thread for any reason.
If anyone has a problem with the above, the owner (MK) will be happy to refund your dues and you can find a wild west style board where they'll allow you to shoot it out. This board has a great reputation for being civil and we will do whatever is needed to keep it that way. Everyone -- without exception -- will conduct themselves as ladies and gentlemen.
If the Bartenders and MK feel that you are abusing the rules you may be suspended for a time. If you continue to cause trouble your membership will be revoked.
Why can't I view other member's profiles?
Make sure you are logged in and that your browser is accepting cookies. When someone first joins they are a "Registered Member". When they have 15 or more posts then they become a "Fully Fledged" member and will be able to view profiles. This keeps people from joining just to view profiles. Also from companies just looking to market to our members.
