We have all these threads going about how to do this or that with your hair. . .but no final product for people to admire.
So. Show us your best vintage hairstyle re-creations and tell us how you did it.

Alright. . .somebody's got to have a halfway decent picture of their hair. If I can post my mug here, you can too.

Here's how mine started:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v649/vessangel/pincurls.jpg

Pincurls set the night before and allowed to dry completely, no setting lotion.

During the day:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v649/vessangel/c4939a0d.jpg

I took out the front side curls and fluffed them out & hair sprayed it to death. . .then rolled them up, leaving the back pincurls up and tucked underneath the hat.

That night:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v649/vessangel/IMG_3983.jpg

Took the rest of pin curls down, more hairspray, more teasing. . .then combed the hair up smoothly to the crown and pushed combs in to hold it. Then artfully arrange curls on top and pinned & sprayed some more. (Addi did all the artful arranging - she did a great job! Ask her to do your hair, too. ;) )

sorry...no wonderful hair pictures, just a question. How did you manage the pincurls in your long hair! I always thought your hair had to be on the medium to shorter side to do them. When I try them, I make a complete mess no matter what length my hair is at the time!

Vanessa
12-03-2005, 09:07 PM
Grab the hair right near the scalp and curl around finger from root to tip. The biggest mistake I made when I first started doing pin curls was to try and do them like a hot roller & roll them from the end towards the scalp.

Thanks! I'll have to give it a try tomorrow. If I'm successful, then I'll take pics for the thread. :)

Yeah, it looks great. I've tried it from the scalp and wrapping it around my finger...very hard to do. But I have layered hair and that might be why. Vanessa, is your hair layered? Have you had to practice a lot to do the pin curls so well?

Vanessa
12-04-2005, 08:12 PM
ITG: My hair is all one length, about 6-8 inches past my shoulders. I don't really practice per se, I just do my hair up in curls a lot so I've had to get good at it. [huh] The more you do it, the neater it gets over time. I don't even need a mirror most times now.

Now - who else has a picture to post, hmm?

ITG

Do you do your curls when your hair is wet, dry, or almost dry?

Naama
12-09-2005, 04:07 AM
That night:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v649/vessangel/IMG_3983.jpg

I know, it doesn't really has to do much with hair, but well in some way it does. Do you wear fake lashes on that photograph or do you have a great mascara or just great lashes? By the way, your hair looks great on this too! And your haircolour is great!

Vanessa

ITG: It all depends on how much time I have & how long I need the curl. For the best set & the most long-lasting curl, I use foam rollers with just-got-out-of-the-shower hair. It sometimes may take up to a day or more to dry, but I can get a good 3-4 days of pre-frizz curl. (And sometimes I look like Shirley Temple the first day  ) I'm going to invest in a cap hair dryer to speed the process up. Pin curled hair usually only works for a day or so.

Naama: Those are most definitely fake eyelashes and thanks.

But gosh, :o enough about me. . .I want to see your hair pictures.

maisie
12-12-2005, 08:11 AM
I can't do pin curls, no matter how hard I try! This may be because my hair is thick, or layered, or it may just be because it looks way to complecated!!!! :)
So instead I use rollers, the ones you sleep in, and considering how thick my hair is, the curl can last up to 2-3 days. (Longer if I didn't spay SO much hairspray in it!!) I will see if I can post up a picture of me at a 1940's dance I went to earlier this year if anyone would like?

Ok, so that's of my hair set in pin curls, with a little spritz of setting lotion.

http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=36201167&imageID=353156867&Mytoken=9DF46CDA-B6AB-74C8-A0F012FBFCDE3F6D3352455
The picture of my avatar is just from luck. My hair is naturally curly, so I crimp it while it's drying and put in a little setting lotion, and when I brush it out, as if magically, the waves all line up, and my hair looks just like the long haired movie stars of the 40s... like think, Veronica Lake. It's not easy to tell in that picture because it's blurry...
there's this, too.

http://photobucket.com/albums/c198/misslipstickvogue/Fedora%20Lounge%20pics/th_P1010021Small.jpg
I just part a small side section at a diagonal angle away from my face, and comb it up and out straight. Then I put bobby pins on either side of the section of hair, spray it on either side and roll it with the curling iron, tapering it so that the back part of the roll vanishes into the back of my head. I let the curl cool while I clip it temporarily up, then do the otherside. When I go back to the cool curl, I brush it out if necessary, or I"ll just wind it tighter around my finger and shape it better, then I put a bobby pin across the two pins on either side and if it's windy or I'll be runnin' around, I put a couple more on the inside of the roll!
And there you have it!

Great dos ladies.

The thing with pin curls is that you really do have to practice to get good at doing them. It's a bit like piano - your fingers become nimbler over time. Ihad it down to afine art a while back then got lazy and started using foam rollers again...now I have toattune my fingers again. Here is a pic of past do of mine. I'll add some more as i find them

I didn't use pin curls for my hair (my hair is way too think to even think about trying, it would probably take all day!!) So I use the rollers you sleep in, and the curl lasts for about 2-3 days, depending on how curly you like you hair to be!:)

i love the pictures! everyone looks so beautiful!

i curled just the lower ends of the hair, but my avatar shows the first time i did pincurls in years; since my grandma first showed me. she has very short hair. mine is getting just past my shoulders now so i've found the technique of beginning the rolling at the base of my finger held near the scalp worked well when i do the whole length of hair.

I am a lot older than you all and You like just like I remember my mother and her friends doing their hair. The pincurls were always done wet and slept on after they were wrapped with a scarf. Setting lotion was not used until the fifties and it sometimes turned out gooey. Have any of you ever done rag curls. You just use strips of a ripped up cloth and roll the hair like a curler and tie the ends. It gives you a full curly almost frizzy look. My mother used to do my hair this way before sponge curlers were invented. :cool2:

Crookshanks
01-11-2006, 02:32 AM
Millenerymiss: Yes I've done rag curls and as you say it came out a bit frizzy, don't know why. It's probably hard work getting nice curls, as it is with all the different curling methods and I'm certainly not a curling guru yet, but I like the easy part when you just tie the cloth ends together to a knot. That's a plus. Would recommend this method as a cheap alternative and instead of using fabric you can use kitchen paper/kitchen tissue. :)

Ah ladies.. you all look just grand! I have to share with you gals that doing those beautiful hair do's from the 1930s-1940s and even from the 50s are a great task not only how to position the pincurls or rollers just to get that certain look but it sure is a pain for the fingers and arms but the result just speaks for it self!

I don't do this very often, but my motivation lacks usually, that and I have to massage almost every other day (days when I HAVE to have my hair up and out of the way) But I sometimes do a woman's pompador with a ponytail. It's similar to the other tutorial posted in a another post, but I didn't know about that when I made mine.

Nope. Just hairspray. I spray it lightly to keep the flyaways in place when I roll it. Just a mist, then smooth it into place with my hand, then roll it and spray it again. It stayed all day, and that's a tough feat for my fine hair :)

I actually went to get my hair cut today and told my hairdresser that I want to be able to do my hair up in 1940's styles. And she got all excited. She loves the 1940's she says! She watches just about nothing but those movies, studies the fashion and hair styles and everything. How about that? Here I was thinking I'd get laughed at but instead she thinks it's a grand idea. And as she's studying my hair, she goes, "Have you ever seen the movie Laura?" Silly question! So she says, "Well, you've got the right kind of hair, so if you want, I can cut it so that when it's a longer you can do Gene Tierney's hairstyles from that movie." Cool!!! She said later this year, when I've got a couple more inches on the length she'll show me how to do stuff.

In the meantime, I did my first pincurls the other night... I can see that's going to take a lot of practice! My problem is more figuring out what to do after you've got the pile of curls... how do you get it to sweep up just so? I know, practice practice practice and keep reading up on how you all are doing it until something clicks! I'll get there! If I turn out something halfway decent, even with my hair short like it is now, I'll post a picture here.

In the meantime, I'll just admire all of you who can turn out such awesome hairstyles!

You've been blessed to find a vintage-minded hairstylist. And don't forget the pictures!

You've been blessed to find a vintage-minded hairstylist. And don't forget the pictures!

You are blessed! I asked my hairdresser if she would do my hair in pincurls just so I could see once what it should look like, and she looked at me like I had asked her to shave my head! She said that if wanted to book that appointment, she would be out of the country!

I did talk her into showing me one, so I could see, and I definetly have my work cut out for me! Although she did show me how to do a finger wave and that looked great on my shorter layered hair. Oh well...practice, practice patience!

Maria, your red hair is gorgeous!
I've tried rag curls on my oldest girl (I'm glad she doesn't mind being the guinea pig!) I got halfway through with her hair and gave up...this thread is good cause it'll get me motivated again!...a friend of mine did that with her daughter's hair and it turned out beautiful, I wish I had a picture of it to show you!

Thank you very much, Mysterygal! :)
Try rag curls again on your oldest girl, and show us the pictures, I'd love to see them!

And Dixon's Dame, you're SO lucky to have (as Vanessa said) a vintage-minded hairstylist! I wish mine were vintage-minded too, but he's not (he actualy told me the other day that he loves those bizarre 1980's hairstyles )

I just tried a new stylist yesterday. I asked her if she does 40s styles. She doesn't but another girl in the shop does and specializes in fingerwaves and she can do rolls and pincurls to boot. I may have to splurge one day try for a fun style.

so check it out.....I was goofing around with the hot rollers and and trying to figure out what to do with with hair for this hat in my avatar. Suggestions for more defined rolls? I tried to squash up a nylon knee hi with some of my hair in it but it didn't work well for me. I ended up putting a baby hair pin on the ends then using it as a mini curler.

Looks good to me! For tighter rolls try rolling it wet and then drying the rest of your hair. That worked well once for me. But I really like how you have it styled there.

Barbigirl...I also think your hair looks great. Your hair looks like the kind that curls easily....mine is so straight, I'll curl it and a half hour later it's flat. I guess the cure for it is to goo it up...I"m wondering though...if there's something out there that holds the curl yet lets the hair have that 'touchable' look

My hair is naturally wavy and it does curl well initially but then it relaxes quickly (Seattle moisture perhaps?) But I tried this once and I will try it again soon. I had put some curling gel in it then let it dry. Then I had this sculpting wax stuff that I used to use when my hair was really short. (I will have to look for what kind) So, then I put the hot rollers in and when they came out, the curl lasted for 2 days!

Hello!

Does anyone have ideas or pictures of 30s or 40s hair that isn't short and doesn't involve many rolls? My hair is a couple of inches past my shoulders, and takes a curl pretty well. I very picky about how I do my hair - I think I prefer to have it up off of my neck. I'd appreciate the help.

I have pretty short hair with "bettie" bangs, and I'm thinking about growing all of it out, it's really, really layered right now, and the front is way longer than the back. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what I can do while it grows out. Or a good tute for finger waves.

growing bangs out is a pain! believe me I know from personal experience! I've always waited until my bangs were getting into my eyes before worrying about what to do with them...when they get to that point, invest in some cuye headbands and hair clips....your gonna be stuck wearing your hair up for awhile until you can actually do something with them, so hopefully your hair grows fast!

Anyhow - they've asked me to do several of the actress' hair. Here's a few pictures from yesterday's hairstyle test-run.

Make liberal use of anything that is round when doing hair - toilet paper rolls, hairspray cans, turkey basters - to make smooth, even rolls.

Lauren

Yup, and if you give it a quick spritz with the hairsray when you are combing it straight before you do the roll, and let it dry for a few seconds it makes it more manageable if your hair's really fine.

Hi Mandolynn!

I'm by no means a hair expert... especially considering what I've seen coming from the other ladies here! My hair is too long to do pin curls, so I've had to made do with rolls, since thats all I've been able to figure out! This is what I've discovered.

First, I find that you need LOTS of volume to do rolls... well, at least I do as I have very fine hair... its thick, but baby fine. So, I curl my hair first. Then, I backcomb the bejesus out of it. I look like bride of frankenstien when I'm done. :) I've found that if you curl your hair then tease it up a whole lot, you should have plenty of "fuzz" to roll your hair around. I use a comb to make sure that the hair that is covering up my newly made rats nest is nice and smooth, and I usually smooth on a bit of pomade too to help. I wrap the ends around my finger and then very slowly, and very carefully roll it up... then, I pin it to death!

The picture in my avator is from this weekends hairstyling before going dancing. Just keep practicing, you'll figure it out!
-Jess

mandolynn
04-10-2006, 05:41 PM
Do I keep the hair I'm rolling around the rats nest of my hair smooth? Or do I just tease the bajeebers out of everything?

(I can't wait to try this again.)

Thank you all so very much :). And your hair looks lovely in that avatar, Jess.

AtomicBlonde
04-10-2006, 06:09 PM
I'm really bad at trying to describe things! Lets see if I can do this again, only better... take the section of hair you want to roll, and tease the bejezus out of it... but, you want the underside to be smooth, otherwise you'd just have a big frizzy roll... make sense? it doesnt matter if the top side is all frizzy, because thats going to be the foundation of your roll. Maybe I should take some pictures......hmmm.... I'll get back to that...

EDIT: OK, so since I apparently have way too much time on my hands I just did a really quick roll and snapped some pictures to better illustrate what I'm talking about. My hair isnt curled, and the final product isnt as neat as I would usually make it, but I guess it does the job.
Maybe I'm making my rolls wrong, but its the best way I've found to do it, and it only takes me a few minutes. maybe someone else has a better way?!?!

Here you go: No laughing at my funny faces/messy apartment/non makeuped self. http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/jessicagracewise/detail?.dir=/1984&.dnm=1a81.jpg&.src=ph

mandolynn
04-10-2006, 06:28 PM
Ah, okay, now I understand. Haha, I know what I did wrong now! I teased everything so the hair I rolled around the rats nest was frizzy and therefore made my roll lumpy. I'm such a goof :D

Ooooh and pictures would be nice, though. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like to see them.

I was telling my mom about all of the pin curl discussing here and she PROMISED she would teacch me how to do pincurls this weekend, she and her sister, my auntie, used to do them ALL of the time. She also told me when they didn't have hair pins on hand, (there were five sisters, all with long thick hair) some of them would use rags or get this, brown paper bag rippings. This I've got to see. She also said she would give me pictures of her mom (my gram) and her twin all dolled up in their 40's best. As soon as I try out the methods my mom and auntie give me and if I get the pictures of my gram and her twin, I'll post here.

I had one hair disaster... when I was about 13 I got my hair cut really short and the lady did an awful job of it... being less than well endowed at the time, I looked like a boy! :( for years after that I never let anyone come near my hair, ended up growing it about midway down my back... a few years ago I finally cut my hair short again, decided I didnt like it as I have a round face that doesnt take well to short hair, in my opinion. I've been keeping it a little longer than shoulder length since then. I'm scared to death to get my hair colored... which I dont think I really need since my hair has natural highlights anyway. I've always wanted to try being a redhead, but I'm so freaked out about having a botched color job that I wont do it! :( Maybe one of these days I'll grow some kahunas and try it out... especially since I'd really like to do pin curls and try some really cute shorter 1940's styles!

mandolynn
04-11-2006, 12:27 PM
You'd probably look very good with at the shoulder length hair or just past the shoulder length hair. You can do shorter 40's style hair-dos but your hair will still be long.

And I just dyed my hair black because I was tired of it being red. I think it looks much nicer with my current haircut than the red did. I have a round face and I made the terrible mistake of cutting my hair just past my chin so all I can really do with my hair is fingerwave it and do small rolls. I still can't do pin curls very well, everytime I do it I think I wind them too tightly because my hair always looks like an afro :(.

Hmm, not necessarily a true recreation - here's how i tend to wear my hair daily.

http://static.flickr.com/49/127148484_077344a063.jpg

It's so easy to do, too. i mousse my hair once it's dry and part my hair across the top of my head from ear to ear. i part the front section as usual and then curl (i use a curling iron) the sides of my hair upwards. (My hot tip - when removing the curling iron, do not unroll the curl. Rather, loosen the curl a bit and slide the iron out leaving the curl largely intact. Then clip the curl in place to allow it to cool completely.) Once the front of my hair has cooled, i unclip a curl, back comb it a tad until all the curls on one side have been back-combed. Then i simply smoothe and shape the upsweep, clip in place and go on to the next side. Once both sides are done - i curl the back of my hair with the iron (as seen below), or i simply snood it.

http://static.flickr.com/47/113531935_77e23d18a1_m.jpg

i hope that my discription isn't too vague. i keep telling myself that one of these days i will construct a proper tutorial complete with step-by-step photos.

Woesis, great hairdo! I'm still trying to figure out curling hair with my curling iron  :)

Thanks!

i love my curling iron, but i'm a sucker for just about any hair gadget and have a frightening collection of often unused rollers/curlers/et cetera. My not-so-secret is leaving the curls intact and allowing them to cool. i worked for a few years at a hair salon (i was a make-up artist, not a stylist) and i picked up some tips and tricks by observing the true experts.

If your hair is super fine, or just wont hold a curl, you could try rag rolling most of your hair and then touching it up with the curling iron where needed before setting your do.

OH! i should've mentioned that i adore Aveda's Air Control hair spray and use it to set my hair.

Well, i'm in Southern California, so with the last few weeks excepted we do not tend to get much in the way of stormy weathers. That said, i should mention that my hairdo is not at all fragile and stays firmly in place all day with the help of 4 - 5 hair pins and some Aveda Air Control hairspray. i've even sported the do numerous times at Disneyland and my hair has withstood the Matterhorn, the Tower of Terror and the park in general. It's a very solid do.

Plus, i'm a massage therapist by trade and wearing my hair up like that allows for me to look professional AND it keeps my hair out of my face. :)

Does anyone know how to use wave clamps? I got some at Sally's and my mom said she'd show me how to use them but I guess she's forgotten how.....being it's only been 40 years...lol.

From what I've gathered on this site, they're supposed to be clamped on to a wave that's already been done, correct?

Ya'll should have seen me try to make the wave with the wave clamp. My husband thought I'd lost my mind (so did I for that matter).

Hi everyone, I've been looking through the thread, and gotten a pretty good idea of how to do my hair, but I have a couple questions. I have very long (about to my waist), very curly, very thick hair. I'm looking for fairly quick, simple things I can do on a daily basis (having a 5 month old baby doesn't leave much time for the more complex, time consuming do's everyday). Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can do this with my hair? Also, I'm not sure what to do with the back of my hair once the rolls are done. (I'm very new at this) [huh] Any suggestions or tips would be very much appreciated! Thanks! :)

Ok, since I don't know much about 40's hairdos, rolls and things.... I only have one little suggestion for you, you really should cut your hair a bit! It'l be very, very hard for you to work with so long hair, trust me! You should really think about it.

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. I love having my hair the length it is, but I'll take your word for it that it will be too hard to deal with. I figured it would be, but I was hoping there would be a way around it. Oh well, that's how it goes, I guess:p Now to find a hairdresser that knows how to cut it so I can style it right... lol

MissQueenie

Pickle, you might try doing rolls in the front, and then rolling the remaining hair into a large roll across the back of your head at the nape of your neck. It might look a little big because your hair is so long, but it's worth trying it to see. If you like it, you might be able to get by without a major chop.

PicklePod05
04-23-2006, 10:18 AM
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll give it a try as soon as I get enough time. My daughter's at the point where she'd rather stay up and play and look around than sleep lol She fights it until she just can't keep her eyes open any longer, but still only sleeps for about 30 min. lol Hopefully I'll get the chance to give it a try soon, I've gotten so many good tips from here, I can't wait to try! :) I hope it works :)

WoeSis

Pickle,

Have you tried snoods? Granted, you'd need one with a lot of room, but a snood at the nape is quite lovely. Try the style Queenie suggested and put that roll in a snood, perhaps add some flowers to the side or back of your head, too.

Good luck!

I absolutely love your hair, Woesis! OMG! And Lolitahaze!

Hehehe Thank you. This was the first time I had my hair in a nice smooth (flat) Veronica style. Usually when I set my hair I let it sit longer and the curls are bigger and fluffier giving me more of a Rita look.

I want to start doing more pin-uppy shoots, but I always end up with vintage movie star/Burlesque glamour photos. I do have a few pin-up shots, but they include me in undergarments (tastefully like you would see in pin-up art), but I think it is against the rules to post those. I will have to ask Lauren for sure.

I have enjoyed reading all about hair. I have tried pin curls--my avatar shows them. They came out really frizzy!

In the pictures, I have curled my hair all over with a curling iron, then brushed out the back a little to make it more wavy. For the rolls, I used a John Amico hair product called curling iron texturizer. It sprays on, then the heat activates it. It holds a curl but keeps it shiny. Anyhow, I rolled the curling iron up and left the whole curl intact. while the curl was still hot I rolled it onto one of my daughter's hot sticks and pinned the ends to hold while the curl cooled. Then, I slid out the hot stick after I sprayed the roll into place.

I do have roll questions, though. For the bangs, should they be included in one of the rolls? I felt that my bangs were lackluster, and I wasn't sure what to do with them! The rolls weren't very big, either. I should try the back-combing thing again. I tried once and it was a disaster!

Also, for what activities/events did women wear their hair in rolls? Or,any hair style, for that matter? For example, were rolls every day, or only for evening activities? I would like to come up with a hair style that would be a bit more glamorous on me than the rolls. What do you ladies think?

Here are some pictures of my rolls. I apologize if the images are grainy. I cropped them out of bigger pictures so you could see my hair better.

Your hair is quite lovely in those photos. From most photos I have seen, rolls were more for events and social engagments. It seemed like daily wear was curly and pinned out of the way. I am no expert though. I could be wrong.

Hello everyone! I'm new here and I am just really loving the advice and pics. I am in dire need of some help, though. I have tried all the websites and looked at all the instructions over and over again and just cannot seem to get anything right! I am in awe of people who can do this and I am wondering if it is just me that seems absolutely handicapped at it.

I am in a musical starting tomorrow in which I have to do my hair as if it is 1948. We don't have anyone to do our hair, so we have to do it ourselves. I have been trying and trying to do pincurls, rolls, etc. My hair is just below shoulder length and is naturally wavy. I have bangs (which are the only thing I can manage to pincurl right!)

Is there anything anyone can think of to help me? It's so short notice, maybe I can "cheat" somehow to get the look?

Thanks so much!!!

Hair mousse and hot rollers, doll! Part your hair off to one side, close to your temple. Using large sections of hair, roll the hair around your face towards the front. Roll the rest of the hair toward the back.

When you unroll your hair, use fingers to gently breakup the curls. If desired, pull one side (or both) back into combs.

Easy-peasy!

Okay, I was going to post some of my hair pictures ages ago. But I'd never get around to uploading them. Well, now I have a little time, so here they are. First are some of my daughter's hair, including an attempt at pin curls I did for a 20's dinner she went to. She didn't want them brushed, though, so she has more of a ringlet thing going on.
http://img57.imageshack.us/img57/1720/pict21398ts.jpg http://img57.imageshack.us/img57/4501/pict21418ua.jpg http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/4840/pict21429np.jpg http://img57.imageshack.us/img57/7866/pict18017ow.jpg

Here are mine. Please forgive the shiny face and tired eyes, and the loose strand here and there. I never get around to taking pictures until the end of the night, so the do is usually about 7 hours old and been through a gig and dancing. Also, these are all styles I did in 20 minutes or less.

Faux bangs are hard to create when the front section of your hair is longer then a certain length--I've done them before and I just don't like them as well as I do other styles on me [huh] But I still think they're really cute :)

Maisie--they are basically a forward roll (in other words, a pomp rolled under instead of back), pinned in the center.

I don't mind if you post a picture of me Lolita--it was a fun night, and we took some fun photos

Maisie... That is correct -- no real bangs for me. My hair REFUSES to do real bangs. I would love to have those one inch bangs, but sadly, it would fro. The bang area of my hair is about chin length. This was actually quite a hard style for me to achieve because I have a messed up hairline that has 3 widow's peaks (one main one and 2 smaller ones). I set the bangs using a sponge roller and sprayed the heck out of it. After a couple of hours I took out the roller and used my fingers to re-roll it and pin it into place. I then sprayed more and more and more and some more and then I shaped. I also have a huge natural wave on one side of that bang area so it kept indenting and not giving me the full spread that I wanted. Hence all the spray!

Jitterbug... Oh I know! My "bang area" is about chin length and I found this so dang difficult to do! I would love to have real bangs, but my hair putz out on me so I will have to settle for the fake ones. :) I will post that cute one of the 3 of us... not the one where I look porky. :( Did you get the photos I sent to you last night?

MysteryGal... Please post photos after you try it! I found this to be quite a difficult style for me to acheive. My hair did not want to cooperate! I just realized that I confused another person over at my Live Journal from using the word faux. I just meant that I had to fake the bang look since I don't have real ones... I think bang extensions would have been easier! LOL

If you set vertical pin rolls, like what is shown in this tutorial (http://flickr.com/photos/70929004@N00/135508576/in/set-72057594117822794/) it should be a lot easier for you to coax your bangs to go into that roll. I tried that set a few days ago and it was lovely, but I sectioned off too much hair for the bang area so it was too large (a bit like I had a sausage on my forhead!). To avoid this make sure you don't section off too much and make small rolls so the hair holds the curl easier.

The set I linked to is my new favorite! When I do all-over pin curls my hair tends to get too frizzy and I can look like a bridesmaid from an 80s wedding. Bu that "Bewitching Bangs" set gave me just the right amount of curl and they were all smooth. I love it when that happens!

the vertical pin rolls I've totally given up on, the hair just does not want to work with me...it looks like the rolls are somewhat on the small side....I currently have small sponge rollers..do you know if they would do the job just fine or get some bigger ones?

16_sparrows

Mysterygal,

I was actually going to try using sponge rollers the next time because the vertical rolls crushed a bit while I was sleeping. So definitely try those!
I have fine hair too and I noticed that smaller rolls work because it takes longer for the curl to work itself out and tends to hold better. If you find it is too tight you can comb it over your hand to loosen it up and then roll it back into position. I would love to see pictures if you try this.

It doesn't really make a difference how the hair is set, even with vertical pin curls--the hair just prefers to go back and up, rather than forward (at least mine does when it gets past six inches.)[huh]

Vertical pin curls are great for adding height and a wave like so:

Or curled bangs like this:

My hair has been growing from a very short do. It just reached a decent length last month(just in time for vlv)and I was able to set it on small sponge rollers.
The result wasn't half bad, still the length at my hairline was too short to roll and I found the worlds smallest roundbrush to roll it under.I swear it's no bigger than a straw.
Not the best picture, but it will give you a vague idea:(I'm the plump little one in pink, lol!)

LolitaHaze

Jitterbugdoll... The biggest thing I did was use setting lotion! That made a big difference in the fluffiness. I did however have to tame the fluff down a bit. I had a great Afro puff happening before that, but not the look I was going for. :) I want to see photos of you with 3 rolls. I think I have only seen you with 2. Heck, I just like seeing your hair. :)

Setting lotion works wonders! But if you keep ending up with a lot of frizz, you may be taking too small of sections. Are you using hot rollers? Also, trying combing a bit of smoothing creme or a tiny bit of pomade through your after the curlers are out.

You do a very nice job with your hair as well :) I only have a photo from a couple of years ago, where I made the rolls a little more flat to my head. I prefer to style them the way you did them on Saturday, though:

I have to admit, I was a bit of a hair snob. My hair curls really well without any product, so I got a bit of a high nose on setting lotion, but since my hair was getting a bit long, I thougt I would try it and Wow, I am quite happy with it. I used pin-curls actually to do my hair the other night. I ended up running my slightly damp fingers (water and setting lotion) through my hair afterwards to tame it. I really should have taken before photos! It was a kick!

Thank you. :) Your hair looks gorgeous in the triple crown (that is what I call it). It is very similar to the way I styled it except the center roll in rolled the opposite way. I will have to try it in the flatter style you have. I think it gives it a more casual day look versus a glam evening look. Great job!

Oh! By the way... Jake from Jake's Chop Shop says hi. I saw him at the carshow. He thought I was you. Seriously, we are going to have to start wearing nametags!

Such pretty hair,it's so refreshing.
Alot of women today want something easy or edgy. Remember when choppy was a bad word pertaining to hair? If your ends looked choppy it was a bad haircut, now they think you're a bad hairstylist if you leave them blunt.
I'm slowly influencing them though. Now,when I have a female client sit in my chair and says she wants to change to something edgier,I reply "How about something pretty?" The majority are jumping at the chance.I really think they're ready, they just need that little bit of inspiration.

Ruby, that's so true! I know my hairdresser enjoys it when I bring in my stack of vintage photos--he even makes it a point to bring in his curler set (circa 1975, I think:p ) so that he can style my hair before I leave. Sounds like you have found your niche :)

Wonderful, I am glad you guys were able to meet up. :) How funny... I wonder who it was who said good-by? I didn't know anyone there. It may have been Suzy Homewrecker (a Derby Dame) who I just met that night. She wants me to teach her Burlesque. (I really need to get a class started somewhere!) I have naturally wavy hair that takes curl very easily. I can roll my hair, no problem, but I had never tried pincurling it.

Well, last night I pin curled it, slept in it, and took the pincurls out this morning. When I unpinned them, I looked like Medusa with little hair snakes. The I combed out the little snakes, and had a giant afro. I mean, my hair was HUGE. I didn't know what to do and had to go to work so I just twisted the sides back and french twisted the back.

Help? I am sure my technique is flawed but I don't know why!

jitterbugdoll
05-24-2006, 07:06 AM
Frizz is usually an indication that your pin curl sections are too small. You can remedy it by combing a smoothing creme (like Pantene), a small amount of pomade, or a little bit of setting lotion through it. Did you use any setting lotion when you set your hair? I will sometimes end up with frizz if I don't use any (using a tiny bit of pomade combed through your hair beforehand can also help create smoother curls)...also, you might have better luck with rag curlers, because you can take a bigger section and create looser curls.

You pin curl the front, too. Make vertical a row of pin curls (have the curls stand up, rather than lay flat to your head), so that the top of your hair has height. Make sure you are curling the ends smoothly under, and keep each pin curl section pulled taut with even tension. It will give the front section of your hair a perfect 1940s wave, like this:

http://www.leninimports.com/rita_hayworth_gallery_17.jpg

Another quick fix for huge hair is to pop in a few hot rollers--this is what I do when I am not happy with my cold set. It helps to relax the set, and reshape it a bit :)

Ok, I am definitely not as experienced in hairstyling as some of you gals so I am hoping for some advice/suggestions. I have fairly short hair that is cut in layers. I usually wear it kind of flippy in the back, with long bangs. It is a cute style, but very present-day. I'm a WWII reenactor and I was trying to find a 1940s hairstyle that will work for a dance next Friday with my uniform. I've decided to start doing 40s styles to go with the uniforms. I think it makes things more authentic and makes the uniforms look nicer.

I was able to manage this with a curling iron, bobby pins, and hairspray. I will need to curl the back or something as best I can - it is fairly short. Please excuse the lack of makeup and the usual weirdness of trying to take a photo of yourself! Please let me know what you think - advice/suggestions welcome!
