Im interested to get ideas from you all on most common colours for clothing. Say jackets, jumpers, coats and skirts.

I know most of the stuff I find is very utalitarian in its colouring and we do tend to think in more muted colours because the majority of photos and footage is in black and white. But on this note, I know the trend for home decorating tended toward brighter, more garish greens, pinks etc.

....so, what colours and prints are you gals wearing?

Reds, browns, black, gray, cream, white, off white, tan, and navy blue seemed to be the staples in colors. But looking at vintage patterns and fashion illustrations can be great for research too. Especially patterns like Simplicity, because they were the lower end "name" brand, so more women could afford them, and they weren't as "fashion forward" because most women could afford to make and wear them. But for the higher end stuff check out Vogue and McCalls for colors, styles, and patterns.

I have so little imagination when it comes to putting colours together - although I really like the bold colour clashes of the 30s-50s I always inadvertently go for some really conventional colour combinations. So I was wondering which colours you ladies like to pair?

Also, I found this small "Lexicon of fashion colours" from a 1962 beaty/fashion advice book that I have. I just love the poetic descriptions of the colours back then! I only wrote down the less obvious ones. Please do post some more colour names if you know some good ones!

Absinthe, yellow-green, as the liqueur.
Amande, almond green, as the underside of the leaves of the almond tree.
Am?©thyste, blue-violet, as the gem.
Azur, blue as the sky on a clear summer day.
Bahia, dark nut brown.
Bleu canard, blue as the male duck's feathers.
Bleu electric, cool greenish blue.
Bois de rose, red-brown, as rosewood.
Calypso, bold bright red-orange-yellow, almost phosphoric, derives like the music of the same name from the Westindies.
Chamois, yellowish beige, as goatskin.
Chartreuse, light yellow-green, as the liqueur.
Chinablue, strong blue, like Chinese china.
Coquille d'oeuf, eggshell.
Drap, light grey brown.
Ecaille, tortoise brown.
Eucalyptus, delicate yellow-green veiled with grey, as the leaves of the eucalyptus tree.
Fum?©, smoke grey.
Gri?®ge, greyish beige, as unbleached linen.
Isabelle, dirty white (named after Spanish queen Isabella who rarely changed her clothes)
Kasha, light beige.
Madonna blue, purple blue as in the paintings of Raphael
Maxim, red as the colour of the plush-covered seats in restaurant Maxim in Paris
Oyster, greyish white with a touch of blue, like oysters
Paille, straw yellow.
Pain brul?©, golden, as toated bread.
Persian blue, clear medium blue
Shocking red, strong bluish red, introduced by Elsa Schiaparelli
Silversand, greyish white like sand in the sunshine
T?™te de n?®gre, dark brown veiled with grey, like the warm complexion of the negro [seriously, this is what is says, and in 1962  ]
Ultramarin, strong deep blue
Wedgewood blue, clear medium blue, like the famous English Wedgewood china

I second Paisley's list...in fact, I'm wearing chocolate brown and rose pink today. Lots of colors go great with browns, but I think people often over look it because it's not that "fun" of a color. I love brown with spring-like colors (not too pastel, but YMMV)...corals, greens, ocean blues, pinks (the color azalea (like the flower) comes to mind), some yellows look good with brown. I love to wear my gray cardigan with a pink shirt underneath and I'll pair it with a black skirt.

I tend to dress in darker colors, with my shoes and accessories being the splashes of color. My favorite combos are black and white, black and pink and black and red. I tend to stay away from big or busy prints, or any print with a light colored background.

It all depends. Sample of stuff in my closet:

Teal and peach
cyan and steel grey
dusty violet and meduim grey
Orange and black, brown, dark cream
raspberry and maroon/dark brown
seafom and sage greens
hot pink, orange and gold
mint green and dark purple
Kelly green and black
silver and china blue, raspberry, or any other deep, strong color
burnt orange and yellow-cream
lime green and navy
maroon and grey
olive green and antique gold
red and white

Prints:
gold background with large hot pink and red roses and china blue barns (sounds ugly, but looks awesome)
Hot orange bg with red, yellow creme, black, brown oriental print
white bg with green, med purple and med teal circles
Med orange bg and black, red and teal stripes
dark yellow-green, brown, red and orange floral 60's print
lt blue, pink, white roses and dark olive stems floral
red, blue, green, teal and olive tafeta plaid
lime green bg, pink and rose pink flowers with white cartoon cats
kelly green and white (and red and white) dotted swiss

The prints are wild, and always, ALWAYS paired with a neutral color. I also tend to wear monochromatic colors.

Thing is, I can't wear "normal" colors. They do not look good on me.

I am color blind :( Not completely, really just color deficient. I wear alot of black/gray/white/brown because they are interchangable. That way I know I match. Pretty borring in my closet :)

Good rule of thumb (and a lot from color theory class ;) ), you can wear just about any chromatic color, with any neutral.

Neurtals- any color mixed with white, or black (brown is a neurtal)

chromatic color- well, any color not mixed with white or black

Now for clothing tastes, the more mutted the neutral is, the easier it is on the eyes, and the safer it is for matching.

If you match two or more chromatic colors together at one time, try to keep their 'keys' together (the intensity of their colors)

Example: If you have a real light yellow, try and pair it with a very pale orange or green, then offset it with a darker color for balance.

Example: Pair a deep maroon (LOVE that color :p ) with a rich forrest green, and pair with a neutral, like a cream shirt.

With patterned fabrics, squint your eyes at it and get the overall tone of the fabric, then go from there.

Hope I didnt babble!

Thanks to Jitterbugs comment in another thread about colors, I think I'm on the right track. Saturated colors.
I love wearing..
red, black, white, off white (cream), dark greens.
jewelry I love to have fun with but find that anything with yellow hues and gold, just don't look right on me. I think my pearl collection I've got going on is my favorite of things to wear.

Also a good thing to do is get an artist's palette color thing and you can match colors that way. Colors become a weird science in and of themselves.

Now, even though my color choices seem outlandish, they work well together (cool tones and cool tones, warm tones and warm), and if you look on the color wheel, they're opposites or adjacent to each other.

I think this is good general advice. Also, it's easy to build a wardrobe of neutral staples and get chromatic accessories and blouses to coordinate.

Some colors just pop more with certain neutrals. Sure, you can combine light pink with tan, but light pink and gray just pops more because the colors are more different from each other.

Same with blue and gray--it's just blah to me. Navy and tan (or medium or light blue with chocolate brown) has more contrast.

I do have a 1930s chocolate brown jacket I wear with a rose pink sweater and medium brown pants that have red and black pinstripes. I pin a rose-pink flower with black stamens to the jacket and wear red crystal earrings and tan mary janes. It's one of my favorite outfits. :)

What a great discussion on colour!

I've forbidden myself to buy anything more in black, unless it is a very exceptional outfit (I'll exempt some very colourful beading on a back blackground, too). I love black, but I've always tended to gravitate towards it as safe, and I'd like to go a bit more colourful. I wore a light green 20s organdy not long ago - almost an apple or Nile green - with a green and silver bandeau, and a lady approached me to enthuse about how much she loved the contrast between my very dark hair and the green dress. Green is my favourite colour, but I usually prefer richer, deeper shades, and those verging on teal. If I wear green, even just a green necklace, someone will usually note how intensely dark green it makes my eyes look.

I'm not really into jewel colours, but love wine colours for example. I'll go so far as to indulge in peacock shades. I went through a phase in the late 90s where I seemed to be substituting a sort of Raisin shade for black - I seemed to have a wardrobe full of that colour.

I see there are other Chocolate Brown fans in the thread - I love this colour (and it has taken to dominating my wardrobe a bit too much as well). I don't like pink much, but if I wear a brown velvet jacket with a rich pink sleeveless turtleneck I own but don't really like, I inevitably get comments.

Some of the colours of the first few decades of the 20th century intrigue me - orange, for example. Not a fortuitous colour for many of my ancestors, although it is said to be one of Anne Boleyn's favourite colours. I never really know what to do with it anyway, but there are some wonderful velvets in that shade, and then some exquisite beadwork which incorporate orange with reds and pinks on a darker background. I don't think it would go wonderfully well with my pale, sometimes slightly ruddy complexion, but there are some wonderful outfits out there that I can admire in these tones.

RaasAlHayya was kind enough to give me quite a bit of bright orange faille, and I'm in the process of making 2 skirts, pants and a jacket out of it. I have some hot pink silk that I'll make a shirt to match, as well as some neutral shades. Then I can cross the pieces with black or creme, and have pretty much a ready built wardrobe.

Orange is one of those colors I wear alot of and looks good on me. I say, if you like a color and it looks good on you, wear it however you'd like.

Sounds great, Elaina! I once would have been uncomfortable with the idea of pink and orange, but having seen so many gorgeous combinations of them in 1920s outfits, I think they go brilliant together if handled by someone like you who knows what they're doing. Wonderful for people who go well with warm shades too, I imagine.

LOL, I always consider orange to be more cool then warm, since yellows make me look sick, and reds make me look drunk.

I rarely wear black - and never near my face, as it justs drains me completely. Also I think it is boring! Why wear black when you can wear a nice colour instead? However for people who suit it I think kelly green and black and black and red look good together. I tend to wear charcoal grey instead of black as a basic as it's not so harsh.

I am a brown eyed, pale skinned girl and suit warm colours, so brown features alot in my wardrobe too! I like brown and pink, brown and red, brown and orange/rust/peach. Maroon, another favourite, goes with almost any basic colour (black, navy, green, brown) and I have to not buy too much of it. It also looks great with orange shades. I also like greens of all shades and am fond of paler shades of say, apple green with navy and also pale green and peach. I have a sea green suit that I wore with a dusty pink blouse and a navy hat and I was really pleased with the colour mix.

One 40s dress I have I love the colour combination. It is hunter green with a small plaid of lilac and plum. It is great! I really love the 30s and 40s prints although I really only wear stripey prints in modern clothes. It's almost the madder the print the better. I have one which is light grey background with a print of kings and queens in cloaks on horseback (looks like Charles II) in black, red, white, green and a bit of yellow. I think it might even have a bit of lilac in there. Truely, it is eye popping. I wear a red suede belt and black and red wedges with it. Something satisfying about all those colours mixed together!

Such many great posts! :)

I have a wide dark bottle green suede belt from the 50's, but I can't figure out what to wear with that colour. All I can come up with is a light gray short sleeve sweater or ditto in cream. It's a really dark green so it has to be a lighter colour. Maybe sunny yellow would look good?

I'm also a bit at sea as to what colours would look striking with aubergine/eggplant. I have a eggplant a-line skirt that I don't know what to pair with apart from the standard grey and cream ...
I have brown hair, brown-green eyes and a warm/yellowish complexion, so beige, taupe-y and medium browns totally wash me out. Black isn't good either.

Miss Sis
03-11-2007, 09:24 AM
A shade of orange would look good with aubergine and sounds like you could wear it with your colouring.

Yellow would be a good contrast to the green belt. I can't wear any shade of yellow - makes me look like I have jaudice! Or again, rust or orange would also be good.

I'm in love with bright colors, it really livens up my pale coloring and looks good with my black hair. I never even bother with looking at black clothing (except for the ubiquitous band t-shirt, but obviously that's not vintage), and only own 1 black reproduction dress. I tend to stay away from grey and burgandy as well, as they do nothing for my complexion. I also tend to stay away from pink.

My favorite colors are yellows, greens and purples. I love reds too, but since I always wear bright red lipstick I feel I look a little TOO red sometimes! I love chocolate brown as well, but mostly as an accent color. I have a gorgeous robin egg blue dress with brown velvet collar and cuffs and it's absolutely divine.

For casual tops I feel you can never go wrong with a plaid! I have all sorts of western tops and plaid shirts, it's more of a rockabilly look, but when all I feel like wearing is a pair of jeans it's a great way to be casual but still look vintage. They are also super easy to find at thrift stores. My whole dresser is pretty much full of plaid tops!

There are quite a few color combinations that I like to wear, and as long as I select at least one saturated color (or adjust my makeup accordingly) I find that a lot of choices work well for me, including:
Red and Navy Blue
Jadeite green and red
Chocolate brown with pink, aqua, blue, or green
Pink and green (aqua, jadeite, and kelly especially)
Yellow and black or navy
Aubergine with green
Rust and green (aqua and hunter especially)
Certain blues with green (right now I am wearing a navy blue dress with olive green shoes)
Gray with burgundy or red tones
Taupe shades with deeper tones of brown or brighter colors for interest

With patterned dresses, I like to pick on color from the dress, and use it in my accessories--belt, shoes, hat, purse, and jewelry, to make that color 'pop.'

I wear a lot of green.

So I loooove: Dark moss with rose. Dark moss with creamy light yellow, though unfortunately I can't wear yellow as well as some. Pretty much any green and black, including the stronger greens like kelly. Green with gray.

I also like to wear red or tangerine and dark grays. Navy can work but I've never grown fond of blues so I don't tend to wear it much.

Brights, yay! Pastels...I can't work pastels at all. I don't look good in any brown but a very dark one, like dark chocolate or espresso.

I look monstrous in purple, which is a shame. :( (<---see, I look like a depressed eggplant!)

What a great thread! I love chocolate brown with pink and chocolate brown with green and chocolate brown with just about any chromatic color.

But honestly, I have no idea what colors actually look good on me. I just wear what I think looks good together and what I feel comfortable in. My mother thinks red is stunning on me, but that's pretty much one of the only comments I've recieved about a specific color I've worn. When I had very red hair, my eyes looked very green, which of course makes sense since these are contrasting colors, so I guess red brings out my eyes.

I have dark brown hair which is dyed henna, so it has a red sheen, and my eyes are hazel with spots of green. I'm not sure about my skin tone. I believe I have olive undertones (I'm from the Mediterranean), but I'm quite fair skinned at the same time. In theory, which colors would look good on me? The internet gives me a plethora of different, inconsistent answers so I'm somewhat confused. lol

I just made a melon-pink velvet shirt, and probably will pair it with black, grey or cream. Not much to do with it, I have to say.

On the same token, I just made my son lime green velvet pants, that he's wearing with a blue shirt. HIS colors are awlays off.

Laura, it sounds like warm colours would suit you, especailly if you tend to wear alot of brown.

My mother has dark hair, quite pale skin and brown eyes and she looks great in Autumn colours but also in red and shocking pink. You could try maroons, olive greens and rusts/orange and see what they do for you. Also try lighter warm colours.

Only by trying lots of things on will you be able to tell. Take your Mum with you - sounds like she'd be helpful!

Hi Laura,

I think we have similar coloring. Except I have black hair (shot with white). My wardrobe is exceptionally black but I have gradually introduced color in the past few years. What works for me are vibrant, clear colors.

I would recommend taking pictures of yourself in different colors and I think you will see right off what complements you the best.

Does anyone have a good source of what color combinations were typical of the era?

For instance, I'm going to be wearing a light blue evening frock. Now, it being fall and I like to mix things up, my modern self would probably wear eggplant or brown shoes and accessories. White shoes seem rather gauche (especially since it's well after labor day!)

I'm having a dillema with one my other dresses (it's white with a floral print). I'm trying to decide, do I match with white shoes, go neutral with tan shoes, or try to match the floral (green and rose flowers)? I'm not sure if the whiteness of the dress changes the rules about white-after-labor-day.

I also need to do non-white gloves. (long story why) And not black of course with the white dress. Any ideas?

Well you can match the flowers or go with black. There's nothing wrong with pairing black shoes and accessories with a white dress. Or you can try metallic.... I would steer away from neutral shoes with a white dress.

I started a chocolate dress with royal blue trim today - I'm very excited about it. I wanted to make a seasonless dress - and a light chocolate fits the bill!

I cannot wear yellow as a red-head, even though I love it. When I was blonde I could. I love reds of all kinds, and I love all bright colors - I'm not much for pastels most of the time.

If there are leaves and flowers in dark colors, could you go dark green on the gloves and shoes? You can dye white cotton gloves (the kind that are easy to find) with RIT dye on the stovetop, I have done it and it came out great. And dark green doesn't show the dirt much, so they wear well.

Maybe check bridal stores (or prom stores) for dyeable shoes and have them in the same shade?

I have a pale tan/cream colored coat with a light brown fur collar and 3/4 sleeves. I want to get a fur hat, a muff, and long leather gloves.

I'm trying to match, as well as I can, the hat to the collar, but the one I'm looking at is basically a ring of fur with a dark brown velvet top. The muff will likely be a little darker than the collar and hat, and the gloves I'm looking at (auction ends in 1 hr 45 min!) are a dark brown leather. I'm also looking at another pair of gloves that are a lighter chocolate brown, about an inch longer and (at the moment) $10.00 more expensive with one bid.

Would dark brown leather gloves look odd with a pale tan coat with light brown fur?

Edit: ok, I went and got the coat to take a better look at it, reinforcing the fact that you should have something in front of you before you try to match it. The coat color is a more taupe than cream, the sleeves are not 3/4, and the fur is darker than I remembered. Oy. @@

But the question is still out there. :D

I usually stay within the black theme.

I like the bottom and top to match but I'm not a hat wearer yet so footwear has to match my hair and the footwear, handbag and coat/jacket has to match in some way too. I'm actually trying to work more colors into my outdoor garments wardrobe.

For Spring/Summer, I try to wear light nearly white neutrals and green as well. Fx. black, rosy pink or white shoes/sandals with ivory coat and ivory handbag w/green/rosy pink print. Green jacket with black shoes and green handbag. I'd like to work red and navy into my shoe and handbag collection and with time I'd like a navy winter coat and red summer jacket/coat.

For Fall/Winter it's just all black.

Paisley drew my attention to this thread again, it's such a great one so I'm happy Lady Day bumped it!

I must admit, I'm still at a loss when it comes to colors! In my earlier post in this thread, it came off as though I wear a lot of brown - I don't and I don't think it suits me that well, but I'm not sure at all. But then again, there are many shades of brown.

Black, however, looks smashing on me (I think, otherwise I wouldn't love wearing it so much, right?) and it's my favorite "color" (go figure, since I have no idea about what colors look good on me!). Some think it's dull, but in my opinion, black is just cool, classic, elegant, all in one.

Paisley, thank you so much for helping. :) I'm just guessing here, let me know what you think:

My mom's always told me red looked good on me. I've receive compliments when wearing this green blouse (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3007/2697102288_aa74942211_b.jpg). Looking at the chart you posted, I'm (finally!) quite certain you are right in that I'm a winter and cool.

However, I find that certain of the colors on the chart do not look good on me, for example the icy blue and pink. I don't know, it might be that it's just my screen, but they look too pastel, too soft. Is the pink I'm wearing here (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2361/2351149922_4a18492487_o.jpg) a cool pink? I think so. How does that color look on me? I also know that I have to be careful with taupe. In general, I think I'm bets in black and strong jewel colors.

Also, I took a look at the site you recommended in the other thread (http://trepanrr.tripod.com/defining_your_season.htm) and I can't quite figure out if I'm Winter I, II or III. I'm leaning towards III, when I look at the color palette and thinking about what colors I've been complimented on. It's been those reds, blues and greens, the ones on the Winter III palette:

http://trepanrr.tripod.com/d4662810.png

I also realized that I must definitely be a cool, looking at what types of red color hair have suited me, and the times I've colored my hair a tad too orange red (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3158/2618783428_199e442243_b.jpg), it didn't look that good, whereas a darker, cooler red (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3077/2376844725_5f4f121ded_o.jpg) tends to look good.

I was confused by that site. I saw so many of the same options (in my case, pale pink-toned skin and green eyes) in so many categories I got rather rattled.

I don't know what the difference between pink, ruddy, rosy, and peach-pink are either. The site looks like it could be cool, but I don't understand it.

I'll have to post pics of me later, or something. [huh]

Viola, I felt the same way when I first saw this site (http://trepanrr.tripod.com/defining_your_season.htm). I usually get so frustrated by those "Find your season"-things, but this time I took the bull by the horns.

What I did was I copy/pasted the entire thing into a text document and then I removed all the options I definitely was not (for example blond, red-haired, blue eyed, dark skinned). That way I eliminated summer and spring. Then I took a look at the color palettes they recommended, and I could see that black was not on the autumn palette. Since I know black looks good on me, I could eliminate autumn too, so was left with Winter I, II and III. Then I asked a friend of mine who I know is the same coloring as me, and who has a better idea of what colors suit her. She agreed! :)

Hope this helps!

questions:
should I be going with what my natural palette is or what my current palette is?

if you have black hair are you basically a winter?

This is a good question. I went forward after my natural palette.

questions:
should I be going with what my natural palette is or what my current palette is?

if you have black hair are you basically a winter?
The first thing you go with this system is your skin undertone--are you pinkish/bluish or ivory/yellowish?
You are supposed to go with your natural palette. If you have dyed your hair, then you need to cover it with a (not too stark) white scarf when you are testing the colors against your skin.
And no, not all black haired people are winter because even black have undertones where hair color is concerned. If your hair is raven black--a bluish hue, then you are likely Winter or Summer depending on your skin tone, if it has red undertones (like me) then you are likely either Spring or Fall, depending on your skin tone. Some are fall, others spring, I think summer has the least number of black haired people.
Neither are people of particular ethinicities and prevalent skin colors all in the same group, though with the darker skin tones, it's sometimes difficult to judge.
Other factors like eye color will further diversify within the seasons.

A simple test of whether you are in the Winter/Summer group or the Spring/Fall group is which jewelry suits you better--silver or gold. If you find you tend to choose silver jewelry because they aren't gawdy against your skin, then you likely are Winter/Summer, while if you choose gold for the same reasons, then you probably are Spring/Fall.
Another good test is, do you look *dead* with pink lipstick or with orange lipstick? If the former, then you most likely are Fall/Spring, with lighter orange suitng better, then likely spring, and darker orange Fall. If the latter, then either Winter or Summer with stroger pink pointing to Winter and lighter pink to Summer.

I couldn't tell, either, which winter you were. I would trust the colors you've chosen (the swatches) over what I posted, though.

The green blouse does look good on you. Yes, the pink is a cool pink: it's closer to lilac than orange. It looks good on you, although it might not be the very best color for you.

As for skirts and pants, some good colors to match your tops would be very dark brown (to go with deep pink, red and green), navy (to go with white, if that's a good color for you), black and gray (to go with most jewel colors).

It really really does, thank you so much. I made a lot of headway with this technique. Now I'm just realizing I have the skin/eyes more like a Summer and the hair more like an Autumn.

I have Cool skin and Warm hair. lol I think that is why I was getting confused and originally seemed to be showing up a little (never in everything) in every season.

Try looking at yourself in bright sunlight. In dim lighting, my hair looks like it's anything from brown to red. (It's dark ash blond.)

Consider what colors people compliment you on, too. That's always a good clue.

Are you going after your natural or dyed hair color?

Paisley, would you usually dye your hair a cool shade if your skin is cool, or is it possible to get the best out of your coloring with warm color hair if you have cool skin? I find that on me, it's best with a cool shade, but I remember that kamikat (I believe, apologize if I'm mistaken) wrote in another thread that it would balance off cool/warm skin to have hair in a contrasting color, that is cool skin and warm hair and warm skin and cool hair.

I'm a SPRING, so is my DH, and our DD Sarah. DS Daniel is a Summer. I've been following the guidelines in the original book Color Me Beautiful for all these years- and her other book Color For Men too. I can say just two words about the "seasonal color theory", it works. What we base from for all of our clothes, even our house and gardens are in the Spring and Summer palettes!:) Don't believe me, check out this album on my Picture Trail:
http://www.picturetrail.com/sfx/album/view/16374882

At one time I even considered becoming a CMB consultant- and also a Tea Room owner! Knowing my colors and those of the family has been enormously helpful in looking for vintage clothing and accessories, and modern clothes. Saves me tons of time I'd waste looking at things that aren't going to look good on us, no matter how wonderful the style is.

I agree with Paisley, the green looks emerald here, good for you as a Winter. Ditto the charcoal coat. The pink hat, looks too rose pink to be best for you- gift it to Paisely who is a Summer lady! Winters really need to watch their pinks. An "icy" pink- think white with a drop of pink tint in it, is okay. My Mom was a Winter, so is my SIL. My sister is a Summer, so is one of my brothers.

Thanks for the feedback! You guys are pros. :)

Do you have any thoughts about the two shades of red hair I posted earlier? Am I right in thinking that the first one is too warm and orangey for me, whereas the second one (the photo isn't that good, but I hope you can see it) is better?

I also realized that I must definitely be a cool, looking at what types of red color hair have suited me, and the times I've colored my hair a tad too orange red (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3158/2618783428_199e442243_b.jpg), it didn't look that good, whereas a darker, cooler red (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3077/2376844725_5f4f121ded_o.jpg) tends to look good.

I guess, then, that the lipstick color in the first photo is also too orange for me? It's NARS Casablanca and it's so beautiful but I'm not sure if it's ok on me.

I'm not very familiar with dying hair. The only time I dyed my hair, I went with a dark ash brown. Hardly anyone noticed.

A friend with coloring similar to mine used to dye her hair light, buttery blond, and it made her look hard, and I've seen the same effect on other women. I'm no expert on dye by any means, but to me, people look better when they go with a color that looks like it grew out of their own head.

BTW, I think your own hair color is terrific. My mother has black hair and I'm partial to the color.

Seconding the query if there's an existing Season thread or something we could move to, as I don't want to derail but I don't want to make a new thread either if that's an issue.

On topic, I find the easiest colour to blend with a lot of different combinations, for me, is green. The hardest is a colour I've never worn much but my fiance likes on girls: purple. I think I might just get a purple skirt to wear with cream blouses, and keep it well away from my face?

Without seeing you, I'd guess you're an autumn, Viola. I'm a summer and lilac is my color. I can only wear specific shades of green, though; I generally just avoid the whole color green.

Is your fiancee a techie of some sort? They're said to like lavendar.

Viola, I think that those exact two colors you mentioned could go well together, that is, green and purple. It works for the Joker. lol No, but I'm serious, the right color aubergine purple put together with the right shade of green would look stunning, in my opinion.

Hehe, really? That's so interesting. He's a huge computer nerd, (I say this with love) and he's got a degree in physics and looking at going for his doctorate. He likes purple on girls but his favourite colour, overall, is orange, fortunately.

The Autumn makes sense, I think, since I can't really wear many pastels aside from some silvery greens and some yellows. Summer seems to do more of those. I was only conflicted because when it comes to darker colours I wear navy (summer) a bit easier than I wear brown. But since I'm more likely to sidestep that particular issue by wearing dark rusty reds, I'll gladly go with Autumn. lol

I appreciate the help so much.

My real issue is most of my old wardrobe (not old = vintage, old = just things from Old Navy a few years ago, etc) is either looking beat, or just plain doesn't fit anymore as I got in shape, so I want to rebuild in a nicer, more pulled together way.

Viola, a skirt in purple sounds great. Wearing colors you love but "can't wear" as skirts or pants is the solution, IMHO. :) I have a grey skirt that I love, but I doubt the color would look good near my face.

I think one of biggest problems in picking colors - especially from a "season" guide - are the subtle variations that occur in real life. Just because a top says "turquoise" doesn't mean it's my turquoise! I have to be able to see a garment or a piece of fabric (most of the time), because just the tiniest undertone can shift the whole thing from "great" to "ick-I-look-like-death-warmed-over". lol

Laura, I completely agree with Paisley- take a look at your own avatar pic sweetie- you are gorgeous with your natural black hair and lovely pale complexion! Why color it?? Both reds are wrong for your hair, the orange- red isn't your color, and the deep red is too strong, harsh and brassy looking for your beautiful delicate complexion. The darker shade might work possibly a blouse or in small doses as contrast trim, but please not on your hair.

Paisley of course as a lovely Summer, if she colored her hair would stick with an ash shade. As a Spring, I look for a color with warm in the name. I recently colored mine, and like Paisley's nobody even noticed. That's a good thing!

The best kind of vintage or vintage-inspired personal shopper, (friends/buddies are always biased-not worth the strain it could cause on the relationship) is someone that is your season. Unless its a woman that knows all about your season, your "best" look for your figure type, is brutally honest, has your best interests at heart, and won't say something looks good on you when it doesn't just to stroke your ego. I had a male friend and former roommate that took me with him to shop for his clothes for this very reason. He was quite a snazzy (almost a dandy) dresser- always looked very sharp. Once he paid me to sew suspender buttons on four pairs of his trousers.

Friends/buddies may will steer you towards things that may be wrong for you but right for them! And when shopping with you may tell you what they think you want to hear, even if its not the entire truth! Better to find a favorite vintage dealer "guru/guide" who is willing to work with you and for you. She'll earn your respect and your repeat business. That's what I have done.

SRL, YES, what you've said is very true here. Also the gradation of color is important. Time and maturity are factors as well. I as a dynamic Spring at 50 can wear an entire dress in a bright salmon colored silk or a crayon blue or aqua linen blouse, yet the same on my almost 15 year old DD who is a youthful figured delicate Spring its overwhelming. Put her in a pretty peach voile or light yellow chiffon though... I've created swatch "sets" of my own years ago since I sew.
At this stage of the game I can now pick out the exact right shades.

This is very sound advice! I have a friend (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_V4jnKfkdIP4/SbuxH3S0blI/AAAAAAAAAI4/yHsfjHENP20/s1600-h/Foto+2445.jpg) (she's also on the lounge, but not active) who I believe also is a winter. She's also had her red in a too orange red (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_V4jnKfkdIP4/SbuxHuuIPTI/AAAAAAAAAIw/Z5chmGIMgyA/s1600-h/Foto+1898.jpg) and it looks much better dark brown, although she looks so amazing, that not even a less than perfect color hair can change it any bit. Have to go shopping with her, then! :) That's a good idea.

About my hair, I've decided to go back to my natural dark brown/almost black color (as you see in my avatar). I haven't colored it red for a while, but the red is so difficult to get out of the hair, even when I color it dark brown. Guess I just have to let it grow out.

So does this mean that red isn't good on me at all, as a clothing color, or do you think that certain shades of blue red would be good? I've experienced that red does suit me, but definitely not the orange-reds. I'm wearing red here (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3453/3309977270_8b01b05e1b_b.jpg) (don't mind my lipstick here, obviously the wrong choice with that blouse but I never think about coordinating makeup and clothing) and here (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3632/3378886330_df2ed86c93_o.jpg).

Changing your hair color doesn't change what season one is, or what colors look better on one. A good test is if the lipstick you normally wear needs to be changed to accomodate the outfit or hair color, its not the best one for you. I have one basic set of makeup that goes with everything I wear. My three fave lipsticks can work with all I have- a coral/peach, a watermelon/pink, and my fave for 40s- an strong orange/red.

Dahrling- I've seen your wonderful pics on FL you are a beautiful Winter- don't go red dear! Some deep blue-red (think chinese lacquer red) clothing items would be fabulous on you!

Mary - do post pics! Based on your very small and lovely avatar pic, you are probably a Summer- but a larger pic is helpful to make the final call. Is your hair ash blonde or golden blonde? If you freckle are they light brown or drk brown? From the little avatar pic you look good in that blue sweater. Your coloring is more delicate, the purple could be a little strong- do show a photo of your wearing it! How do you look in lavendar or a soft violet for example?

Laura, your sweater is beautiful, it looks very bittersweet deep orange red (think Campbell's tomato soup made with milk orange-red). Is this the case?? The friend in your pic might look good in it. You are right, a blue-red is definitely better for you.

You are STUNNING as a natural BLONDE!!!! Why are you coloring your hair black my dear?? Simply INCREDIBLE.

Ladies, do you see this- these two pics of darhling are amazing- look closely at the differences of which is best for her. As a blonde she just GLOWS! Here is excellent evidence to show about hair coloring.

You are of course right, I could not tell from your sometimes fuzzy or camera flash being in your face in some pictures until these you've now posted. Now I know what was that "something" in your pics I couldn't quite put my finger on that was just a bit "off", and why you kept choosing the colors you did...

I stand humbly corrected, the black/dark hair you've been doing has been completely throwing me off-especially with your eye color in your pics. I thought you had colored contacts or something...Your eye color is KEY, in why the black hair color looked not the best in the pics I kept seeing with those gorgeous eyes of yours.

Your clothes and makeup you wear are perfect for a warm blonde, not the Winter your hair was trying to fake you out to be. Please consider returning closer to your natural hair color... or a dark golden warm brunette- think Rita Hayworth not Bettie Page.

The black hair is NOT your best look, every pic you posted was even making you look- dare I say it-older and tired. Please take that in the best possible way. I see so many young pretty teen blondes out here (we have a middle schooler and a high schooler here, and we live across the street from the middle school) go to stark black hair trying to look hip, retro/metro punk or goth or whatever, it just makes them look tired and sad.

Ever since I dyed it dark, you wouldn't believe how I have been treated better and more seriously by men and women alike.

I have wanted to go red for a while now, not a dark red, but a medium, strong red and another gal has just suggested Rita aswell.

Perhaps my glow is a result of the deep tan and a love of 'glow' blush I had :o

Awww thank you Fleur!!

Have you tried strawberry blonde, or does that wash you out?

I might be a spring.. I don't know. I have no idea which season I will be if I get my hair dyed red though!!

Darhling, I think you look marvelous with the dark brown hair. I think it would be fun if you tried a red Rita-colored hair and that would be a great in-between step if you were thinking of going back to a lighter color anyway.

Laura, your sweater is beautiful, it looks very bittersweet deep orange red (think Campbell's tomato soup made with milk orange-red). Is this the case?? The friend in your pic might look good in it. You are right, a blue-red is definitely better for you.

I think the red color the sweater has suits me fine (it's actually two different sweaters, the first (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3453/3309977270_8b01b05e1b_b.jpg) is more warm red while the second (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3632/3378886330_df2ed86c93_o.jpg) is a cooler red, I think. I believe you were talking about the first), so I don't think you can always stick to the season-recommendations, but they are certainly good as thumb rules. :)

Darhling, I like you much better as a brunette! You look good as a blonde too, though. ;) But I was totally fooled into thinking you had a cool skin, and I've seen you irl. :D But I think this goes to show that season theory is not quite water-tight, but as I said, probably good as a guiding line. The rest of the way, it's intuition, although I'd rather not count on mine. lol

Thank you Inky!! Also hair color is fun and luckily most of the time something I can change.. Now the hard part will be the expensive trip to the hairdresser! (I nearly fell down my chair when I asked how much it would cost, apparently a cut, two times of haircolor removal (not bleaching) and new all over color is the same price as a goldbar!!)

Her hair color would be wonderful for you to try out. There is pic of Rita with amazing rolled bangs and a topper hat someone posted on the Beauty thread somewhere, a great color head shot.

Though Rita did make a film called The Strawberry Blonde I believe. I recently saw picture of Rita for a film done up as a platinum blonde, not her best hair color for sure.

I feel your pain on the cost, Darhling - I get mine done every 8 weeks (and should go more often but I have to save up!) at $122 for bleaching and two colors (currently blood red and dark brown). That's probably cheaper than the city since we live in a rural college town, so I consider myself lucky. But it is so worth it to have it done professionally, especially if you are changing shades!

Beauty is painfully expensive ;)

Tell me about it! I was quoted aprice of $340 for a cut, two times color removal and new all over color!! The upside is I haven't been to the hairdressers for 6 months (I color it at home and the split ends are always a minimum even after so long) so if I divide that price with 6, then I can justify it lol

My younger sister is 4'11" and after two kids she was a size 0 with a DD cup, she had reduction surgery years ago. She's in real estate and the men in her field never took her seriously...

Wearing red hair is a lot different from wearing red clothing. It's two very different kinds of red.

A suggested outfit using red:

Funny, my make up colors are the same, with a little rose pink blush..

But wouldn't you think they'd be different shades of those colors, since spring is intended for a warm skin tone whereas the winter colors for a cool?

I know it is off topic, but how annoying isn't it?!! A few years before I went dark it was standard that when I met someone who was more interested in the 'blondness' of me, I used to get VERY sarcastic and bet with friends how long it took for them to realise that I was being sarcastic.. often it could be hours. But dye the hair dark and voila! Instant respect.

Also I find I can get 'away' with wearing more feminine clothes much more now and still being treated more seriously. I can't imagine how I would be treated with one of my current dresses, seamed stockings and red lipstick and my blonde hair

But thank you!! The hair is lightened by the sun though.. and the flash is bright aswell. I have another pic from the same evening where you can see my darker blonde hair better.

Darhling - the way I look at it, you are gorgeous with either coloring. I think that haircolor can change the "type" of pretty that projects. As a blond you are beautiful, perky and cute. And as a brunette, perhaps a bit more exotic, sultry, edgy and gorgeous. Take that for what it's worth. :) As long as you enjoy the attention you are getting then I think it's the right look for you.

I have a hard time with those season recommendations. I look like death warmed over in over half the colors I am "supposed" to wear based on my skin, hair coloring. I will never wear peach or pale yellow. I change my haircolor constantly (well at least a few times a year) so I find colors I feel comfortable in that work on multiple levels. I think maybe I place more value on skin tone than haircolor myself.

I have very bright red hair so I find I can wear a lot of black without looking too dull, but green is my favourite as it contrasts beautifully with the red and exaggerates my pale skin without making me look pasty. Also, is it just me or does a pale to mid blue just suit everybody? It does something wonderful to all skin tones in my opinion.

Darhling, I think you could totally pull off red - your lovely pale skin and blue eyes will just glow with a good red.

Hi Viola, you have very similar coloring to me (naturally). I've been dying my hair red and brunette for years and it looks fab! (if I do say so myself lol ) I have done the flaming unnatural red and recently decided to go more natural brown. I think it will make your eyes pop, and your skin glow! Sorry but I agree 100%. The dark hair adds about 10 years to your age. You do look lovely of course in both but somehow you just need to get them to respect you with blonde hair. It is their problem and not yours.
BTW: My dad had the exact color of eyes as you.

I should say there is 7 years apart in the pics and I do agree that blonde hair can be much more youthfull than dark, but I don't think that dark hair is aging per say (unless the verdict is that I look 40 years old on the brunette pic of course).

Lillemor

It has as much to do with what colors you have in your wardrobe (or if you can afford a big overhaul) and what make-up colors and amount of make-up you choose to wear. So either could work for you. I have a weakness for natural reddish shades so I'm partial.;) But red could be red of course, strawberry blonde, any shade of auburn and other combinations I haven't thought of. Some make light brown and orange reds look really good in combination with the brown under the orange. They usualy have a very fair complexion.

I think what ages some women more than darker hair is that they aren't willing to change the colors they wear or aren't aware of what a difference it makes so they automatically assume that dark hair isn't for them or that it certainly ages them which is most cases; the color itself doesn't do.

Agreed. Your natural color is actually pretty close to mine -- I'm a bit darker, but the undertones are the same. I color a bit darker using Garnier #56, which is a medium reddish brown -- not flamboyantly red, but there are glints of red which work well with the darker brown. You might try something in that range and see how it looks.

You have stated many great points here, my wardrobe was a very different as a blonde, lots of gold, tan, champagne colors then. I would never DREAM of wearing red, and not I live in that color!

I am sure I will incorporate a lot more navy and jewel green tones, perhaps purple (which I love) when I go red :).

Viola - maybe it is my screen, but your hair has some faint warm/red tone to it, maybe go red!! (Although I am far from partial on that matter at the moment lol ).

Helen, I was wrong in part of what I wrote back to you. I was rude to you, and it was bad form. I ask you to forgive me for my unkind remarks. I obviously misinterpreted your comments. I could have PM'd you with this, but since I said it publicly, I feel it necessitates an apology online.

As I say to my children and DH too when I catch myself having done this- my being tired doesn't give me right to be rude to others, or use it as an excuse for being short tempered and saying unkind things. I need to listen to my own admonitions and then do it- more than I confess I do.

Done. With that, let's move on gals shall we in a positive direction from here, okay?

I'm just going with my gut feeling here, so I'm afraid I don't have any explanations and I can't tell whether you are warm or cool. :o It looks as though you have a bit of yellow in your skin, though (judging from your eyelids, especially).

A possible bias: There is a bit of a difference in the light in your photos, and it makes it a tad difficult to judge.

As to which ones I especially like on you, I'd say these:

Also, is it just me or does a pale to mid blue just suit everybody? It does something wonderful to all skin tones in my opinion.

No, I'm afraid it doesn't in my case! I'm a pale Autumn (pale skin, brown eyes) and those shades make me look ill. But a nice Airforce Blue or muted Navy is fine! It's all about the shade. My Mother, also an Autumn but a brunette, looks pretty terrible in most blues except turquoise.

Darhling, you have the most amazing eyes. Your blonde hair does look lovely and glowy. I also think you look good as a brunette, but I have a hankering to be a brunette myself, so I might be a bit biased. :o I think it's very striking having dark hair IF it suits you. I have sort of dirty blondey brown hair. I tried to go a bit darker and everyone thought it looked strange as my eyebrows are quite light. Also I have a very sensitive scalp so I can't really be bothered with dying it all the time and upsetting it. [huh]

Luckily I discovered years ago I was an Autumn, but I've also always been colour confident. My mother instinctively used to dress me in the warm but muted Autumn tones when I was a little girl.

I avoid black as I look dead in it, but on a Winter person, it looks amazing. It's helped me avoid making costly mistakes with vintage too as I know what colours suit me.

Viola, I'm not sure yet what season you are, but if you are an Autumn, and want to wear a purple, go for Aubergine. It looks lovely on Autumns!

Miss Mary-
You are lovely first thing in the morning. I wish I could wake up like that!
I think your best colors are Red, Purple, Royal blue, White, Pale Blue and Cerise. I think blondes always look striking in black as well. Blues really suit you and I go back and forth on the turquoise - I think it is because the other blues seem to pick up your eyes and make them more intense. The turquoise though gorgeous on your skin, downplays how fierce your eyes are. Seems to me that the jewel tones look really nice on you.

Just my 2 cents.

Paisley

Yes, the turquoise is a little too intense. A lighter shade might work. (See the sweater I'm wearing under my suit; Mary and I have about the same coloring.)

Laura, I do think I have a little yellow skin but I still think it is bluish underneath, but I'm not really sure. Remember when we tried lipsticks in my garden. Not one out of 10 were right for me compaired with you who look just lovely in everything!

Very interesting choices from you all, and very varying! So you didn't make me all that much wiser. [huh] But fun you didn't rule out all the the strong colours on me!

I agree with you, The shirt, different blues suits med and I'll try to find new ones aren't to intense.

Mary, we all did agree that the light blue looks really good, it really picks up your eyes. I think this is something blue-eyed girls can do so well - put on a blouse the same color as your eyes, and POP! I've always wanted blue eyes, it's definitely not that I'm sad to have brown eyes, but blue eyes are so ethereal, out-of this world, connected to the highs of the sky and the deeps of the sea, whereas brown is very down-to-earth.

Thank you for the help, ladies. I have never coloured my hair so I keep waffling: I think I just have to pull up my big girl pants and do it! lol

My eyes are a strong (but not light) green so maybe a copper or deeper red-brown tone would make them pop or more. It does have to look, well, not natural-as-in-just-like-mine, but plausible, because I'm job-hunting. That's why I was leery of my guy's top recommendation - black. I LOVE black on ladies who can carry it but I think on me it might veer toward too much. Deep chestnut/coffee/mink might give a similar effect, without as much harshness. I hope.

My mom is pushing for a red/copper/strawberry - which sounds appealing, and there is a reddish note in my hair, but I worry my mom doesn't know - she still describes my medium brown as "blonde" on the theory I was when I was little. lol

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b273/Bizarre_Coverup/josie2iz3.jpg This pic is what makes me think red could work, because while I never coloured it, the light here makes it look redder than it is, and I think it looks pretty good.

I was just wondering what people thought about character and colour? That someone might be a "deep winter" (I think that's it?) and be recommended a tomato red, but if they're a bit shy, they might feel that something like tomato red is a bit too loud for them. Equally, someone who's an extrovert, but doesn't fall into the category where they could wear something like tomato red, might well be able to get away with wearing it because it matches their temperament.

I think this is a good point. I've always avoided finding out what season I am, because I like to wear whatever my heart desires, and follow my mood swings across the rainbow :p After looking at the link that Lillemor posted (I can't help but be curious) I believe I'm definately not a summer nor a winter, but either an autumn or a spring. Somebody once said she thought I was an autumn, and I have a lovely 50s dress with autumn shades (different shades of brown, a little orange and moss green) that I always get compliments for. I'm a brunette (who's hair turns golden in the summer), I have hazel eyes (brown near the pupil, green, then gray at the outer part), pale pink skin (MAC NW15), and there are already too many pics of me posted here at the lounge hehe. I have a lot of temperament and love strong colors, and would never dream of settling for an autumn spectrum. I imagine that every color suits me lol

P.S. For several of my teen years and early twenties I wore all black! I wear black on the outside, 'cause black is how I feel on the inside hahaha
Today I'm wearing mint green, cream and rosewood. Sorry to bore you to death tihi!

I'm a winter who for a long time was very uncomfortable with many of the bolder colors. Red has only grown on me this year and I've felt uncomfortable all the times people have dressed me in red in the past or have talked me into wearing red. Now I'm obsessed with finding as many shades and hues of red that suit me. It's happened along with growing confidence and becoming more outgoing.:) I still don't understand the rules about what other colors go with red so I go by what I feel comfortable wearing with red. Purple, pink, coral and red are fine. I feel strange if I wear red and green or red and yellow. Red and blue are nice too.

Those four photos are great examples of the different seasons.

That's interesting you say that, Lillemor, because it's like I was suggesting and that the colour theory idea takes some people out of their comfort zones. and if you end up feeling uncomfortable in a colour, is it going to suit you?

Miss Sis
04-23-2009, 11:41 AM
The four photos are very good examples of each of the Seasons.

Winter and Summer are the cools of the spectrum. So, cooler colours with blue undertones (yes, even colours like bright red can have a cool blue undertone)

Autumn and Spring are the warms with red/orange type undertones. Winter colours are bolder than Summers' and Autumns bolder than Springs.

It's a bit more complicated than saying, if you are a Winter you will have darker hair, as true blondes can also be Winters rather than Summers. It's natural haircolour plus eyecolour plus skintone.

That's not to say that sometimes you might not take a colour from another 'Season' that looks great on you, but as a rule more colours from your season will look really good on you than those from any other. Example, my mother is an Autumn. She has warm skintones, brunette hair and brown eyes and suits gold jewellery. So she looks great in warm colours, BUT she looks fantastic in bright shocking pink and bright red- Winter colours. She gets so many compliments when she wears them. [huh]

Thanks...I had fun hunting those photos down.

And your right...there can be plenty of crossover. Liz's skin tone was pretty versatile back then---here's one of her in a "Fallish" bright and warm orange---she can still pull it off. Look how blue it makes her eyes look. In fact, when I saw this I second guessed and thought maybe she *was* an autumn and not a winter---but there are lots of photos out there that prove otherwise.
(But frankly, she was so stunning, with the right makeup she probably could have warn just about anything. :) )

Like your mom, I am an autumn too. But my skin has enough olive in it I can pull off a rich burgundy or hot pink....I need to have the right makeup for the latter, however. And I doubt I look as good as Liz Taylor. :)

Left to your own devices, does your hair have an ash tone (Ash Brown) to it, or a golden cast. It looks maybe ash brown, but hard to tell. Without makeup pic- do your cheeks naturally a noticeable pink in them? Also what color was your hair as a child?

If you look great in burgundy you'd most likely be a summer, if it drains the color from your face, you might be an Autumn. How do you look in pumpkin compared to pastel baby pink? Navy is a tricky color.

Your eyes are green or hazel right? Or are they brown?

I think it's ash brown. When I was a child it was a lighter ash brown with blond highlights (I called it golden back then because it reminded me of Rapunzel). It still has some gold in it, even though I think it's cool (absolutely no red). In the second pic my face is nude, my cheeks are flushed because I'm hot. So yes, my cheeks are naturally a little pink. My eyes are hazel (mostly green). I can't answer your question about the colors though...

For me it's quite clear that Liz is a winter, though, she is a gorgeous stunning and dangerous ice queen. The same with Grace Kelly. chanteuseCarry can correct me if I'm wrong, but basically, Spring/Autumn= yellow undertone =gold= warm, and Summer/Winter= blue undertone= silver = cool.
Strong contrast = Autumn/Winter, low contrast = Spring/Summer.
I had a personal total consult done about 15 years ago by someone who was trained directly by Carole Jackson and read up quite a bit on this system at that time, so this is how I remember the general concept. It's also a method to make it easier to choose colors that compliment and harmonize with your natural coloring so the entire picture harmonizes, instead of one item standing out. If you purposely want to make something stand out, you can use this system in a reverse sort of way. For instance, if you want to procrastinate at work :p choose colors that drain color from your face ;) I am Autumn and do very badly with black--consequently, I manage to look mournful at funerals even if I am feeling chipper and bright, thanks to mourning black which is still very much the standard here.

With portraits, make up and lighting and even the texture of the fabrics can affect the results, so with actresses, I'd think it's the combined effect of the gorgeousness of the ladies plus the techinique of the photographer and stylist when they pull off a perfect look outside of their seasons.

Hair/skin/eye/lips, the total impression. I should have said delicate or soft contrast instead of low.
Typically, Autumn/Winters have darker hair and eyes against lighter toned skin while the hair/eye/skin tone contrast is softer (so the tones are closer to each other) with Spring/Summer. This is a very overall generalization, so when you try the actual swatches, the result may not be spot on.

Oh yes....my mom sold Jafra cosmetics in the early 80's and they implemented the whole Carole Jackson thang. By the late 80s they had simplified it to just "warm" or "cool" categories. For each, there was a paper fan with colors and you had to hold the fan up under your chin to see which was more flattering.

I saw some blip on the news years and years ago about a woman who did color analysis......it turned out she was actually a summer instead of a winter or something.....and she was *crying* because she was afraid during her time as a color analyst she had mislead people. (?)
I remembered thinking, "What a sad and shallow world we live in."
But it's still fun. :) And frankly, when trying to make a good impression, it is a good way to help you look your best.

Yes, Black, white and jewel tones are all fabulous on you. Chinese red and royal blue, royal purple... Keep your pastels "icy"- white with just a drop of color in it. And with your figure and height, you are a "dramatic" Winter! Blue-red lipstick, not an orange-red, no orange anything!

I'm sure you experts are sick of people asking, but I'd love to know your opinion on what I am!

Edit: Here's a really old candid (about early 2006 I think?) I have very little makeup on, and my skin is the same colour now as it is here, and my hair's the same colour at the mo.

I have never really thought about what suits me - I just wear anything and everything from pastels to jewel colours, black, white and neutrals. I may have made some dreadful faux pas because of this! :o

Ha....and since we have been writing about this stuff, I have been looking at photos of myself a little differently---this one cracked me up (and not just because my little brother has scary Fabio hair--although that is a big part of it---this is 15 years ago, and I am sure I was at a Phish show the night before...rock on) because our skin tones are *so* different. Look how pink he is and yellow/olive I am. And how young, and tan, and thin I was! :)

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/amelinab/colors.jpg

Anywhoo....and these are of me summer before last and last fall, respectively. The stark white background in the second one makes me look like a ghost...my hair was dyed a dark and warm brown:

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/amelinab/fall_me.jpghttp://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/amelinab/ragroller2.jpg

I am not wearing makeup in any of them (well, some mascara in the smiley one). And I have a hell of a time finding foundation that matches my skin. When I was in theatre and mixing my own base, I would have to add alot of yellow and green to it. I've been told I am an autumn...spring and summer shades look terrible on me...but sometimes I can wear winter shades. My best colors are forest green, teal, deep rust and brick red.

From now on I want to make sure all of the dresses I sew from my vintage patterns have these colors....I made one in a deep blue the other day and even though the dress itself is really cute, the color does nothing for me.

Thanks cC, in that case I think I wear the right sort of colours. I do have a coral lippy, and it looks kind of nothing-y, and I have tried to find an orange-red that suits but nothing ever does, now I know why! I have an orangey top that I sometimes wear but I don't think it does a lot for me... maybe that one's for the charity shop then!

Fleur - you are definitely a winter! CC has good color tips for you there.

I wanted to add that even though I am a winter, I will wear colors in other groups as skirts, accessories, belts, trousers, shoes, purses, etc, These are colors that are not particularly flattering near my face.

I love all kinds of greens, but they make me look sickly, so I avoid them near my face/upper body. So that's something you could try if you love orange for example.

Can't do reds, pinks, yellows or oranges very often. They make my face look really red. But dark golden yellows look really good. But hands down, green is my color. I have green eyes that are golden around the center and ringed in blue. Certain greens really make my eyes pop.

I've always had trouble with deciding where I fall in this color season thing. I've got med. green eyes, very light sun-freckle prone skin, med brown hair with a bronzey tone in the sun, and ashy tone when not.

I tend to look better in cool colors esp. raspberry, teal, and deeper blue greens, but I'm not sure I'm quite contrasty enough for winter, as brown shoes always look slightly more natural on my bare feet than black. Yet I don't look as great in the lightest summer pastels. I look washed out in khaki and beige. Yet, Orange is my favorite color so I wear it a lot, (esp. burnt/cooler orange) and I get comments like "you look good in orange." I'm not sure whether they mean I look good in it, or they wish they had the guts to wear a bright safety-cone colored t-shirt! I went to the clinique counter once for some foundation, and found out I had more of a neutral skin tone, which has been no help at all either, so I've given up many times trying to decide.

Anyone got ideas? here's a pic of me in a raspberry jacket.

If you purposely want to make something stand out, you can use this system in a reverse sort of way. For instance, if you want to procrastinate at work :p choose colors that drain color from your face ;) I am Autumn and do very badly with black--consequently, I manage to look mournful at funerals even if I am feeling chipper and bright, thanks to mourning black which is still very much the standard here.
 lol :eusa_clap Hysterical!

Jupiter's Darling, I think you and a few other people here might be a "soft autumn." This palette is a little confusing to me since it has warm and cool colors, but if it works for you, that's all that matters. According to this site (http://www.prettyyourworld.com/autumnpalettes.html), "You're [sic] coloring is quite neutral and you can wear soft colors from both the warm and cool colors but favor the warmer colors more. Avoid bright colors which will look garish on you."

You need to keep in mind that you may not necessarily look great with every single color in one's palette. When you test the individual colors, you may find some that won't do much for you.

When I had my consult, the consultant tested each color in my palette and gave them the range of one star to three, plus, making the suggestion to use the *off* colors only as mixes in prints, stripes and plaids. Three stars makes one look gorgeous, and use as the base colors for the wardrobe, choose when you want to make an impact etc etc, while the lesser stars are quite fine, but would be better in combinations or accssories or accent colors.

It was pretty funny when she was going through the palette, draping each color on me and giving explanations about them, and when she came to teal, she said "This is absolutely one of the best colors for Autumn, it's a three star color for everyone who's Autumn" and when she draped it against me, "Uh...um...:o it is rare but on occasions, well, it's two stars with you" lol lol lol

I got the "mix" with pewter, periwinkle, turquoise and forest green as well as a few others, while three stars were oyster white, camel, olive green, aubergine, bronze, gold, tomato red, mahogany and apricot as well as a few others. Anything with a recognizable bluish tinge mixed into the yellow base is an *off* color for me :(

Sounds like an Autumn- probably. Were you deep redhead or strawberry blonde as a baby and a little kid? Do you tan? Is your skin on the peachy golden side, not pink cheeks.

Most often a Spring like moi and our DD will freckle and BURN- whereas an Autumn can get really golden...

Autumns can't wear pink well, red is good as long as its an deep orange-red, and colors like a persimmon or Campbell's tomato soup made with milk orange-red. Periwinkle is good, try on a deep periwinkle for size. A dark yellow, like Gulden's mustard is for autumns.

I can wear bright yellow summer straw hat (think daffodil) but our DD can wear a lighter (but not a pastel) yellow eyelet. Her Summer brother needs a pastel yellow button down shirt or polo shirt. He can wear a burgundy polo shirt, she and I need a watermelon pink. Baby pink is for my Summer sister, I need a peachy pink.

Though if you look good in raspberry iits a Summer color like burgundy. Teal, deep blue greens orange are warm season colors, burnt orange is very different than orange. Sounds like the deeper shades in general are what's better on you. Beiges and khaki are autumn colors, its okay in pants or a skirt just not up next to your face. You need higher contrast hear your face, why the beige is boring at your face, if your face is almost beige (like the Clinique gal got you for foundation). Btw, my Mary Kay foundation is an ambivialent "Beige 1".

you are right on with the other colors- especially is its in a print, as being used in small doses, just don't have the dominant one closest to your face. Good rule of thumb, sometimes you cannot get only your colors in a print.

I'm going through my CMB (my seasonal color theory BEST book) and for Autumns they actually list "amber" eyes. With that eye color maybe the orange is just not so good close to your face.

(yeah I really did want to be one back in 1980), I'd be charging y'all $125.00-150.00 for an hour consult. And that is what I could have charged you in 1980- the prices have gone up over the years!

Last year I talked to a gal at our church about a possible 6 week class in wardrobe building; including seasonal color analysis, makeup, hair colors, accessories, etc. I'd bring in lots of sample garments from my own closet and of church gals I'm friends with, fabric swatches for draping, jewelry sets, scarves in different seasons, the works! Even do scarves as a giveaway item, one made for each season that someone could receive. I'd make them of silk charmeuse print fabric, sewn out on my serger machine.

Class based on my idea for a book I've had in mind.

I even created long ago my own version of a CMB "presentation" binder, packed with lots of info, including color pics from mags especially sewing magazines, showing clothing and models that are the different seasons. Still have it.

There's also a 12 season theory, apparently. So as a winter I can be either a deep, cool or clear winter (http://www.prettyyourworld.com/winterpalettes.html). I don't get it... What's the difference? The site doesn't clarify it for me at all.

I think these celebrity examples on this site (http://www.prettyyourworld.com/celebrity-style.html) were fun to look through. Hmmm.... soft autumn? Interesting. I do see some colors there that I like and wear.

Thanks for your thoughts! I've never really considered autumn before, since it has yellow and yellow greens, which I think make me look ruddy, but soft autumn doesn't look to have as many yellows... Soft summer is the counterpart of soft autumn, but a neutral on the cooler side, right? So if those two are the most neutral of all the palettes, I might just be one or the other. Yay, closer to figuring this out!

Just in case any might be thinking I only talk the talk but do not also walk the walk... Hope these pics are helpful.

I have worn more of my brighter/stronger colors in my Spring palette in about the last 5-10 years. With age and maturity (I'm 50-1/2) I've become even more color confident. When younger I wore much more of the lighter shades, as does now my almost 15yo DD. Though I can still look good in any of my Spring colors. Here's an example or two (or seven!) showing me in modern and vintage clothes I have with both.

Note* in all these pics I am wearing the same makeup shades, with only perhaps the pink geranium lippy being switched for the 40s orange-red shade, or with one shade layered on top of the other.

some Clear Spring, brighter shades in my palette:

Yes, I wear this modern linen dress on a regular basis! One of my very favorites. First time worn with the knit pink gloves, decided after seeing these pics, that the dress is FAR better without them. It really can stand on its own. EVERY color on this dress -EXCEPT for the deep red between the watermelon pink and the orange is a perfect color for a Spring! The upper part is periwinkle! Forget the black veil here, again better without the veiled hat. Wearing red-orange red pumps.
Another favorite. Violet pashmina shawl, with a cream silk chiffon dress w/ light and med violet (med violet reads blue here- but actually matches the shawl color perfectly) light pastel pink, clear bright warm pink.

http://pic80.picturetrail.com/VOL988/3409603/21762929/362414134.jpghttp://pic80.picturetrail.com/VOL988/3409603/21762929/361205557.jpg
The WRONG RED!! This vintage 40s topper hat is too deep and is blue-red, but the trim is the right red. Feather and ribbon are both an orange-red, go figure! I completely fell for the trims and the shape of this hat, plus the very large intact veil. I kept it in the box for two weeks after getting it, telling the seller I wanted to send it back. Her pics looked lighter and orange- red, why I bought it. Finally decided to keep it anyway!

http://pic80.picturetrail.com/VOL988/3409603/21762929/361137899.jpg
Modern orange-red knit Tango dress. Crayon box bright blue knit top by RL, RL silk charmeuse skirt is same crayon blue, cream and black. Black is okay for me in this print, as its away from my face.

http://pic80.picturetrail.com/VOL988/3409603/21762929/359851297.jpghttp://pic80.picturetrail.com/VOL988/3409603/21762929/359852133.jpg

two Light Spring shades:

vintage peachy-pink 40s rayon print dress. The print has kelly green, navy and cream! Worn with kelly green hat, lt. yellow-creamy pearls, blue gloves and bright navy shoes.
Vintage peach silk hand embroidered blouse. Vintage 40s tilt hat has peach flocked dots in the netting! Yellow-cream and warm peach-pink flowers. Worn with a light peach linen tea length skirt. Earrings are light orange/coral and cream cameos, I have another similar vintage silk blouse that is light warm aqua.

I'm on the left to the lovely Laura Chase in this photo (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3632/3378886330_df2ed86c93_o.jpg). The colours of that dress, black and cool, bold colours, don't seem to do anything for me whatsoever (I like the dress anyway, though, and wear it regardless lol ) These (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3309/3482211119_887768f78c.jpg) are the kind of colours that I usually go for.

I have chestnut brown or medium to dark brown hair with red-ish glints, hazel eyes and a warm, sometimes even yellow skintone. Thanks in advance! :)

I agree with everything you've said. The brown t-shirt looks better on you than the black dress.

Thanks for your opinion, Paisley. Good to know that I'm not completely off track.

Chanteusecarey, it's amazing how flattering peach is. It seems to enhance almost every skintone, doesn't it? I wonder if that's why it was the most common colour for lingerie.

In CMB, they mention periwinkle being a good color for most. They said its a good one if one has to dress a bevy of bridesmaids...

Hello Mary, I didn't forget about you my dear- everybody else got you covered I think! Though as it appears you are a Summer, I'd like to test just a couple more colors on you.

Can you get to a clothes shop and they'd let you take a pic or two like you did here these aren't colors in your closet? I've gone so far as to buy a 1/2 meter of fabric to have for color swatching- but then I tend to be over the top about things sometimes (okay usually!)...

You look lovely in the lighter pastels, that turquoise is good, but try it in a pastel version. That Blue-grey that matches your eyes is terrific!

Let's see a pastel (baby) pink on you and a burgundy. And a charcoal gray and a rose brown (not chocolate).

This medium/deep periwinkle looks really good, as does the pastel yellow .

I took some pic 6.30 this morning. I thought that'd bring a true light to my face. I'm hoping you could help me find what colous suits me best?! Maybe they are all wrong, what horror!

A cerise/ dark pink one.

Blue-Red, icy pastels, black, white, chinese (deep) red, royal blue, royal purple, emerald green (plus other colors, those just popped into my head first), silver accessories. Winters have it easy to find clothes! Liz Taylor, Anne Hathaway.

Thank you so much. I'm so glad I'm a winter. I love those colors. I think I knew all along without knowing that I knew it because those are the colors I tend to wear. Thank you again.

Haha. Thanks for the input! I really appreciate it. I will try those colours out and post them here. It'll be fun to experiment a bit and go outside the box.

I'm a winter but I don't love the colors. I have a SIL who's either a Spring or a Fall. I'm envious of her and she's envious of me because the other one can wear the colors we prefer. But I know that I'm only cheating myself if I wear colors I like but don't suit me. So when I won't accept that there are certain colors that aren't my best, I try to find the clearest shade of it if I'm going to wear it close to my face, or else wear it away from my face but then I make sure that my accessories or what I'm wearing close to my face is most flattering to me.

I've copied Mary. I won't apologize for my bare face, but I will apologize for the fuzzy eyebrows - I'm growing them out so they look awful!

In my opinion, the light pink, light blue and yellow don't suit me. Of the print fabric swatches, the green jungle print doesn't suit me.

What about the other colors? To me they look fine, but what do I know. lol

The purples, blues and greys in deeper shades appear to suit you but that's just judging by how I see the colors on my screen. I agree, the jungle print doesn't suit you but I think khaki or olive green would??? I think both the brown suits you but what do I know...Some icier or greyer shades in pale blue might suit you and I think teal does too. Again; I'm no expert! The fruits print is nice.

Are you a Fall or a Fall with winter influences? Maybe you suit the mid tones of the winter palette better than me like Elizabeth Taylor does. I suit the very bright, very deep and icy pastels. Pure white and black is good on me too. Most very fair people don't suit pure white. I said MOST so don't start arguing with me if you're one of the few fairs who for one or other reason suit pure white. I've yet to see it.

If you're a winter, then douche pastels won't suit you but you CAN wear pastels; just keep them clear or icy.

At first you clearly looked like a Fall to me but now I think you look like a winter. Maybe Fall with winter influences or winter with Fall influences.

Laura Chase

chanteuseCarey and Paisley are pretty sure I'm a winter, and I agree, I'm not a fall because I can wear black beautifully. I think it was just the red hair that made you think I'm a fall. I'm not going red again any time soon.

But even though I know I'm a winter, I find that some colors out of my palette still suit me well, but maybe I'm mistaken, and that's why I posed these pictures. Just knowing what season you are doesn't make it clear, not to me at least. I think my skin is more neutral than cool, but again, I don't know. So Lillemor what does it mean to be a winter with fall influences?

04-30-2009, 03:15 AM
Laura, you look great in most of those colors. I like best purple 2 and 3 and the palm and fruit print. I agree the light pink, light blue and yellow are the least flattering.

Yeah, knowing the season doesn't not make all things clear to me either. But I like this idea of being a season with influence from another, which might apply in my case, as I too think I may be more of a neutral...[huh] At first I thought I was an autumn, then a winter, now I think I may be a winter with some autumn influences? :eusa_doh:
But my skin is a lot yellower than yours, Laura Chase, so maybe I'm wrong to think winter?! The winter palette is still the one I suit most colors from, except for yellow which is by far the worst color on me and I can't wear at all, unless is in minimal quantities, bright, and mixed with a lot of other bright colors, and still is lot better to leave it out altogether.
Black is not the greatest on me, although I can wear it. Same with white. Grays are really funny on me, and definitely not the best choice. Sivers are nice though. [huh]
I suit best reds, blues, purples, greens, pinks in quite a few shades from medium to dark. Intense shades, but not fluorescent. That's when I start to look sallow.
On the other hand I can't wear any pastels, I look completely washed out. Of course I covet all soft pastels!lol
It's confusing for me because I kinda feel I can wear both warm and cool colors, but really depends on the shade, which makes it all more difficult.
It's funny with reds, because I think I can wear both orange reds and blue reds, red seems to work on me even if its very bright. Or so I think...

Maybe I am a deep winter - I can see the rust, and tomato red are in this palette- which I would have thought to be autumn colours...
Yet some of the shades here look a bit cool and washy to me...?!

I think winter III is better. It is the only palette which seems to have a mix of cool and warm shades - and thse are the ones work best for me, with the exceptions I mentioned above.
http://trepanrr.tripod.com/d4662810.png

Why does it have to be cool, deep and clear winter and then winter I, II, III? One is getting VERY confused now...

Or maybe I am an autumn with winter influences?! This is autumn:
http://trepanrr.tripod.com/d41663f0.png

The reds on the second half of bottom image are great on me. But not orange, not gold, nothing of the kind. From the top I can wear the teal and the green, also some browns, but I feel if it's too earthy is no good.

:( I can't even establish the theory of what I am and it's frustrating!
I'll see what photos I can find, maybe you gals can help...

Your eyes, hair, complexion or some part of you may lend itself beautifully to some of the colors in the fall palette the way I understand it. It was all explained on that site I linked to some posts back.

I know there are colors I can't wear by themselves but look better with other colors. I also know that blue/red and plain orange don't suit me but a coral red/orange looks stunning on me if the shade is clear and deep.

I can wear dark chocolate brown but no medium or light shades of brown. Some shades of taupe work but not camel. Sand is a color I always have to try on to see if it looks right. Generally though, sand is best if it's really light or greyish.

Your complexion may not be the same all over. At least I'm finding that certain colors look best near my face, or my arms or my legs but not in the other areas...just to add to the confusion. lol

I love bright orange so I wear it in my hair, away from my face. Fx. I'm looking for an orange clip barette or to wear in the back of my hair. I bought a nougat colored clip barette because I like it and think it can look very classy on the right person but not on me, so I wear that as a ponytail holder quite often.

Now I'm totally confused, I wish I hadn't posted anything:eusa_doh:

crazydaisy, you are beautiful, but I already knew that! ;) Is that your natural hair color?

Your skin color looks different in every one of those photos, so I find it hard to determine... But seeing how beautiful the pink lipstick in the last photo looks on you, I believe you are a winter too. I think we have very similar coloring, but your skin might be more yellow, yes. My natural hair color is also slightly darker than yours, but our eye color looks very similar too!

I agree that that grey isn't your best, maybe try another shade of grey, I think it would work really well.

Purples and some funny greens. This is better in reality, brighter, light was bad and only half made face. It looks kinda autumny.http://www.flickr.com/photos/36778968@N03/3488711806/sizes/l/

Forget me not blue/ Cornflower - not sure but like it although it does bring out the yellowness in my skin:

Laura, my skin seems to look different according to light and the color I'm wearing [huh] . And yes, it's my natural hair colour. I will not dye it until is a must. My grays are starting to appear now here and there, but on a minor scale, I think I can still have it natural.
Thanks for the compliments, but do bear in mind I am trying very hard not to post the unflattering photos :o - got plenty of those too!

Blue/cornflower makes you look tanned, very summery.

Black is not the best, no, but you can easily wear it.

The cream looks fine but not spectacular

I agree about that blue, not good...

But the purple/hot pink beret - now that's spectactular!

This is such a beautiful combination. CrazyDaisy, your coloring is similar to that of my MIL and she had her wedding dress dyed cornflower blue. It's the only shade of blue I've ever seen her wear. She wears a lot of heather shades (purple/violet/pinkish but not really pink) too but the ruddier ones and not the clear ones which I prefer.

Light gray, this doesn't work very well either, in spite of trying to spike it up with some red. I should stay away from grays altogether. http://www.flickr.com/photos/36778968@N03/3488760628/sizes/l/

Or from anything pale like this pink http://www.flickr.com/photos/36778968@N03/3488760668/sizes/l/

Ok, I love this orange cardigan. This works, but other oranges _ like the fruit - don't.But look underneath at the brown (slight taupe shade, maybe), I think it washes me out. Stll think I am an autumn, Lillemor?

And last but not least, white with electric blue , a step towards fluorescence from royal blue, but I can still pull this one off. It's best though without the acidity. And with a hint pf purple in it.
