I thought this ad was so cool and does a good job showing the colors that were common during the 40's for makeup.
I LOVE the eyebrows and the bangs!

Those eyebrows are GREAT!! Too bad I look like Groucho Marx if I draw on anything heavier than the width of an eyebrow pencil :(

Ah, that's great Kimberly! I'll never get the comma brow in my wildest dreams, but maybe I can aspire to those lashes... those are pretty great too. ;)
(Though I'm not sure I'm going to get there using Maybelline :D )

L'Oreal has a line that gives me lashes pretty close to that without feeling heavy and goopy. I can't remember which line it is but it's in a long gray tube with a gold cap. Give it a try, it's pretty reasonable too. So funny, I've tried mascara's from more expensive lines like Trish McEvoy and Channel, but they don't do anything to volumize my lashes. Oh, that's it, the L'Oreal mascara that I love is Volumunous or something like that. Sadly, due to an eye infection, half the lashes on my right eye fell out:( So I won't be having beautifully thick lashes for a while, and I have to wait some time before I can use falsies again. Need to make sure eye is completely healed before I do anything drastic to them again.

That is such a great picture! I wish I liked rounded arches more to add to my look, but in the end I prefer pointed arches and even if it isn't "authentically" correct, I am sticking to my point(s)!

I have tried so hard for so long to get those brows, but I can never quite get them even -- they end up looking like off-center apostrophes rather than neat little commas, and I end up plucking them back to pencil-lines in frustration. That's about where I am right now, and I'm always very wary of trying to grow them out again and start over, because I know where I'll end up.
The gal who comes up with a foolproof way of getting perfect brows every time will make a million dollars.

Lizzie, I am wondering if many women from the 40's actually had eyebrows like that or if they penciled them in. I have a hard time using makeup on my eyebrows because I go really heavy on them and they look fake. LOL
I should probably try a pencil instead of eye shadow.
BTW: I was watching Fashion Police a few weeks ago and they had a beauty expert who said no only should you tweeze eyebrows, but you should trim them too. I can't even imagine trimming my eybrows. I would think you would need a real steady hand or you would wind up chopping them off completely.

As far as trimming, you were suposta comb them up (using hair spray to keep them up) and trim then along the top of your brow line. Ive done that and I must say, it does open up the face.

I have a very tiny "eyebrow" comb. It's not a brush with thick bristles, but a little comb with thin teeth. I comb up my brows and trim the excess that is sticking through the teeth. Just like when you get a hair cut and the stylist uses a comb while they trim your ends, it's the same way with trimming your brows. You can get one of these combs at any beauty supply shop as well as the little bitty scissors. It's pretty easy.
As for even brows with perfect shape, I'll never have them. For some reason the inside edges of my brows, the edges at the center, are very thin. I lightly pencil that area in. But the line where the brow begins that is supposed to be even with the outside bridge of the nose (if that makes any sense) is much farther in than it should be. I get a few hairs in that area, but I have to pluck them out for they never completely fill in and if I leave them my brows just look messy. So, I end up attempting to fill in that area with either a pencil or this brow shadow that I have.
Has anybody ever heard of Topik? It's a spray on hair product. Normally used for people with thinning hair to cover up any bald spots. I know someone with thyroid disease who has very thin hair. She uses this stuff and it makes her look as though she has a full head of hair. I wonder what would happen if I sprayed this stuff on my brows to make them look a little fuller. Not that I want big bushy brows, but just to make them look more defined and dramatic in the areas that I normally have to pencil in. The stuff looks like real hair. I think my Mom has some at her house. I'll be there tomorrow and see if it works. Hmmm, I feel a big mess coming on!

Here's a pic of my brow.. it's close but I'll have to soften it a bit. I really want them like this pic now, I think I'll look younger, HA!

That reminds me of when I first started using the special eyebrow razors. I wasn't paying that much attention for some reason and shaved the end of my eyebrow :fing28: , taught myself a leason. lol

I draw on my brows due to scarring anyway, and always draw on an arch, else mine are very much a comma brow. I don't like them, and so I've always faked the arch by plucking, then drawing.
Too funny, goes back to the old thing of straight haired women want curly, and brown eyed girls want blue (generally speaking, of course.)

Has anyone ever had their brows threaded? It's such a better way to shape brows and do clean up (for me, anyway) than waxing. I'd heard about it, but none of the waxing places I went to had anyone trained until....
...I was having my makeup done by an artist who also knew how to thread brows. He offered to do it for me before he started in on my makeup and my brows never looked better. It hurt much less than plucking or waxing and it seemed like he was done in about 5 seconds.
Unfortunately, my brows are thin and I hardly ever need to have them fully done. Plucking here and there is enough for me, so I haven't gotten to do it again.

Yeah, I can do it, I just don't do it on my eyebrows. I bleed no matter what the method, and I've plucked for so many years that it's not a huge deal for me to just grab the few stray hairs.

My eyebrows are gigantic if left untouched, so I keep up with waxing and plucking as much as possible. I definitely inherited my dad's brows (which look like two giant hairy caterpillars hanging out on his face!). Yikes!
Unfortunately though, it's impossible to put an arch in them. I manage to get a slight one by plucking, but it's very very slight. My roommate has the most gorgeous dark brows, with a beautiful arch, and she doesn't even pluck. All natural! And of course, she covers them up with bangs! :( I would kill for her brows!
Even though mine are thick, I still fill them in a bit with powder because they are a few shades too light for my liking, compared to my dyed black hair. I don't want to tint them though, because apparently the way to make black hair look natural is to have your eyebrows a few shades lighter. Actually, a lot of people have told me they thought my hair color was natural because of the color of my brows, so I guess it's true.

?ç used to be unhappy with my eyebrows cause they are rather straight. I used to sit infront of my mirror pulling the skin above my brows up trying how it would look with a higher arch. But now I¬¥m actually happy with them. Same with my mouth. I hated my small mouth. But I learned to do my best with lipstick :)

I trim off what little eyebrow hairs I have with scissors. My drawn-on brows look MUCH better than the barely-there, scattered-about natural brow hair that I have. I think drawn-on brows look neat!!

It's so silly, I have dark eyebrows with high arches, but my boyfriend really likes the straight, slightly sad Louise Brooks-kind! In the past, when he's been going "look what pretty eyebrows she has" over some actress I've tried to pluck mine straight, but it's just impossible because of the shape of my brow bones. I have to remind myself that I actually like my "evil" eyebrows the way they are. It's so stupid! lol

The easiest way to trim your brows is to use a small brow brush to brush them up (up as in, toward your hair line). Then, using small scissors, trim the hairs that stick up above the highest part of your brow. It's quite simple to do, really, and it helps keep them tidy looking. At least, this is how I was shown to do it by a make-up artist.

This may sound totally strange, but to get a bit of an arch when you brows are straight, raise one eyebrow. You know, that quizzical look with just one eyebrow up.
I wasn’t able to raise my eyebrows individually, so I decided I would just teach myself. After about 3 months of practice, I was able to raise my left eyebrow on its own. I was satisfied with my accomplishments and the new range of facial expressions that were available to me, so I never bothered to try with my right.
I have estheticians comment often on the arch in my left eyebrow and the lack of an arch in my right. I strengthened the muscles in my left brow so much over the past several years that my brow arches now! I am in the process of trying to teach myself to raise just the right one now. Slow progress, that’s for sure! The muscles are getting stronger, and I hope to have even eyebrows any month now, lol

Oh my goodness, who would of thought they make eyebrow toupee's!! I think that would be easier than using the Topik stuff I was talking about earlier. Although I still might give it a try, I think it will just wash right off with warm water if I don't like the look.
My older sister has been obsessed with her eyebrows since she was a teen. (she's also obsessed with pedicures, but that's a entirely different part of her OCD) Anyway, she has these beautiful, full, just the right thickness brows. If she wanted to do the pictured high arched brows, it wouldn't take much. But, she likes them thin and straight. I could strangle her sometimes, she doesn't know how good she's got it. I guess some kids called her "bushy brows" when she was in middle school, and ever since then she insisted on getting them thinned. She had electrolosis done when she was 15 to thin them, and she carries a tweezer with her at all times, just in case she out and happens to look in the mirror and see a stray. Ugh. She seems to have gotten the better genes in my family:(

Good News, I looked up some info on eyebrow threading and I found a place where I live that does it. It's an indian owned day spa. Since this is a custom in India I am hoping they will do a good job. So I think I might try it....if anyone has anything to throw in about it before I take the plunge please do!

I love them but can understand why some people would be put off by them. They are a little extreme but very well groomed. They would be a pain to maintain though. I can't tweeze my eyebrows anymore or I won't have any. I may try and fool around w/ a pencil and see if I can at least get a little curve on the part that is near my inner eye.

You are not the only one. They are ok for the photo shoot but that is what I think of when the terms 'tadpole or comma eyebrows' are used. Definitely not easy to pull off in real life. I see it on a lot of teen girls. Hm. As always, however, if you think you can, go for it!

And she's definitely not wearing stockings! I'm glad I'm not the only one whose skin has that uneven color ever-so-slightly-freckled effect without the freckles. :o
Is the blue-gray unusual? I've been using nothing but brown for a while, and I'm starting to get bored with it.

Actually, it was a popular color in the late 30s-early 40s (worn in the 1950s as well.) I have a magazine from 1939 that remarks upon the color combo of the moment--blue shadow worn with bright pink lipstick.

Ok, I tried doing my blush different today and I think it really helped! I've been so used to brushing it all along the cheekbone, really counturing. But that pic is just so youthful and I'm feeling SO old! SO, I did just the apples of my cheeks today and I felt much younger, lol!

So I went and did the eyebrow threading thing...my eyebrows have never looked so good! I love it! They are absolutely perfectly shaped and both of them are exactly the same (trivial but rare for me--lol) I'm a believer now. I have sensitive skin when it comes to eyebrow waxing and I used to have 2 days of red itchy eyebrows. My husband says it looks like a red raccoon mask (men are so sweet aren't they?) but with the threading I had no reaction. Now I don't have to plan 2 or 3 days ahead of time to get my brows fixed up to go out. YEA!! thanks to the girlie who mentioned it....when I get a chance I'll have a pic taken to show everyone. :eusa_clap

With threading they take out a row of hair at a time. I usually pay $10 at the place that I go to... used to be $6 when I started to get them done this way a couple of years ago, it's a lot more popular now.

It's also a good idea, if you're not comfortable with tweezing your eyebrows (especially when it comes to reshaping them!) to go to a professional.
my eyebrows are totaly reshaped from how they used to be...they were straight and big...at first I over plucked (which of course doesn't look good) but then I got these eyebrow stencils from MK and used the right shape as a guide to how to let my brow hair grow in- and where it needs the plucking.
This has worked extremely well.
What I did was trace along it with a bright red lip liner pencil so that there was NO mistaking where the line should be.
For filling in and adding color; I've been incredibly happy with L'oreal's brow pencils.
