Hi, Ladies (and pesky peeking gents!)
I just got my hair bobbed (I had to do it, the long hair was killing me..it was quite the impulsive move). Tonight, I'm going to a 1920s blues dancing event and I want to get my fingerwaves perfect. As I don't have time to do the traditional wet-set, I want to use my brand-spanking new 3 barrel waver to do them. ANYONE have ANY tips/tricks? Do I use a setting lotion or just do it on plain ol' dry hair? Is there a good technique? ANYTHING would be helpful! I'll post pics as soon as I can! :D
Merci bien!

Take a heat-protection spray to do no damage to the hair. The easiest way is to always start with the top of the hairsection and than move down once it is waved. I put clips into the hair when it cools out and spray it them with hairspray than.

Since my hair doesn't curl all that easily, I'll just speak for myself but, yes, I do put some gel (just a small amount) onto my dry hair.
For best results, use small sections of hair, otherwise it really doesn't look like it gives you much curl.

I have two marcel wavers and have found them to be be useless.
I have thick hair and it does have a lot of curl, but they work just fine on my friends hair (thinner and straighter)
Let us know how you got on!

The 3-barrel modern wavers do nothing for me, either. I have real 1920s vintage wavers (the kind you heat over the stove!) and my wave always comes out PERFECT with them.
I hope you have better luck with the iron than some of us have! ;)

i swear by my wave clamps... i realize you dont have time to wet-set, but they are incredibly reliable if you have the time to set them. good luck with the waver though !

Likewise, I don't care for my marcel iron. I recently spent about 3$ on wave clips and wow are they easy and work amazing! If I use them on freshly washed hair (wet is fine) and clip them in and sleep with them (I just wave the front and sides for a pompadour style), then the wave is smooth and lasts until I wash...with no setting spray.
It takes five minutes...really, if you have time to let your hair dry, it can't be beat and it's a lot less taxing than spraying and curling.

Just to get an idea about how it looks when I did all of this and put the rest of my hair in a knot (don¬Ąt mind the face impression - I was sitting in a iron bath-tube and had cream that was damn cold put on me lol )

WOW! Thanks for the help! I tried it (I was in a rush) last night and I wasn't impressed with the iron itself...it looked more Cyndi Lauper than a 20s doll lol . I'm definitely going to try the clamps next time because I really want that gorgeous look! THANK YOU for the help!

So what is the exact process for doing this with the clamps? I want to make sure I get it right. Just do it wet and let it air dry? I think that sleeping on them would probably destroy me. :p I have an old fashioned pincurl hairdryer but would that work with the clamps of doom? What is your routine?

What did you end up doing? Were you able to sleep on it? I'm just beginning to try waving and from what I've read wave clamps seem the best bet for me.

I "slept" on them once and that will NEVER happen again. I'm opting for the dryer for round two. :D I have to get a trim for my hair but when I do I'll post a picture. Just got a digital cam and am armed and ready. How about you? Any luck or tips?

i have slept in them once or twice but its pretty much a gamble to do so, they come out sort of wonky and kinked unevenly.
i like to wet my hair and let it air-dry, being that i live in a dry desert climate, it takes less than an hour and a half. i would say let it naturally dry as much as possible but if you have to dash out of the house, do a final blow dry... carefully though as the clamps get hot under the dryer.
post pictures !! i really want to see how it comes out.
