I have always considered the cufflink to be uncomfortable, both physically and socially.

But recently I have come across some coin cufflinks that look pretty good and have some character.

Tobias Davis offers many for a bit more than $100. I particularly like their Indian Head penny cufflink:

Others can be found on Ebay for less than half that.

I personally like cufflinks, and the ones you found are very nice and unique.

Here are the two that I just purchased from Ebay. The combined price was $36.00 (including shipping).

I saw a couple of good deals on men's vintage jewelry lots. Seems to be a good time to grab some as no one is bidding on these,........[huh] Get 'em while ya can, and good hunting. :cheers1:

Hey,.. pretty nifty there D-Man.
A vintage man can never have too many cufflinks.

Heres some from my box.

Especially since they can be had, (for now anyway) for a song. :) I saw lots of familiar maker's names like Swank and Krementz, and lots of creative designs such as a fishing rod tie clasp.
I love those theatrical face cuff links, by the way. :)

I've got several pair inherited from Dad and both grandfathers, along with my dad's and his dad's watches from the 20's & 40's. But my favorite pair of cufflinks were ones my mom found about 10 years ago. I do bookkeeping and taxes and she found a pair that look like old accounting ledgers. You can even open them up - one read "Debits" inside, the other reads "Credits." I haven't worn them to the annual meeting of a group I'm on the board of (treasurer of course!) in a couple of years so I'm thinking I'll do it this year - and hoping I can find a nifty double-breasted blue suite by then.

Provided that no one snipes me, that is.
I will share the wealth and offer some up as prizes in an as yet to be announced contest to complement the tie contests sponsored by our esteemed colleague Mr. Chevalier.

In the 1940s, were cufflinks in use for daywear, or were they generally reserved for use with tuxedos?

How about studs in lieu of the buttons on the shirt front?

thanks!

scotrace
04-22-2006, 06:59 PM
Other guys will jump in.

It depends on the cufflinks - and the shirt.
There are SO many jillions of cufflink designs. Very simple black links are usually for more formal wear or evening. The fun ones are the novelties. Little cigars, automobiles, hats, exotic themes, horses, dogs, political, club affiliation, you name it. Those are for other times and day wear.

Most shirt studs one sees are onyx or mother-of-pearl. Those go with starched shirts in a formal setting. If you find any "novelty" shirt studs... well... I'd think a time or six about those.. :)

Am I wrong, gentlemen?

Feraud

Based on period films, I recall seeing cufflinks on men during the daytime as well as for evening wear.
I think scotrace correctly summarized the day and night use of links & shirt studs.

Senator Jack
04-22-2006, 09:08 PM
I try to match my links to the colors/patterns I'm wearing and therefore I don't think about what's formal or what's suitable for day/evening wear (Heck, just putting on a tie these days is considered formal, isn't it?)

Lately, I've been having my shirts made with removable button strips so I can use studs. Even with business shirts. I like to wear a bow tie occassionally, but I've always hated the look of exposed chest buttons, so on go the studs. As of yet, no one has mentioned their daytime appearance.

Senator Jack

I like shirts with single cuffs for cufflinks or monkey's fists, not folded back like "French cuffs". Hard to get, but with some shirts, you can simply do away with the buttons.

Are these cuffs ahistorical? I've seen several times style police statements like "Cuff links are used only with folded/double/French cuffs" or even "may not be used but...."

Mr. Rover
04-23-2006, 06:23 AM
I would think French cuffs were as common back in the day as they are today! I always see stars, such as Bogart in Maltese Falcon, wearing them in movies with regular suits.
I have a few shirts with French cuffs that I wear with my suits. The cufflinks add a level of panache to the outfit. I have also had shirts made with combination button/cufflink optional cuffs but tended to just use the butttons out of laziness.

Shaul-Ike Cohen
04-23-2006, 07:23 AM
I would think French cuffs were as common back in the day as they are today!

You mean double cuffs, or buttonless cuffs in general?

3PieceSuitGuy
04-23-2006, 10:58 PM
because I think barrel cuffs are informal when wearing a suit. I have always loved double cuffs and was thrilled when they came back into fashion. As the others have said, cufflinks are fine for day wear (not black onyx or mother of pearl inlaid ones - they are strictly for black and white tie respectively), but studs are strictly for formal wear. Black or gold for black tie, and mother of pearl for white tie.

As said by Scotrace avoid the novelty studs at all costs for evening wear.

Cheers

04-24-2006, 06:23 AM
I think simple cufflinks look great with suits for business wear and they're certainly appropriate as a vintage look. I have several old pairs as they were common even in the Victorian era. Don't forget silk knots and other materials (alligator for instance). For evening I think you could get away with slightly dressier links with a suit. Black tie, as someone said, usually calls for black stones (onyx is typical) although I've seen some tasteful gold ones with tiny diamonds. White ties always requires pearl or mother of pearl. I've never seen studs worn with a regular suit but I'm sure they must have been at some point.

Mr. Rover
04-24-2006, 06:31 AM
Buttonless single-cuffs were worn for the most formal of occassions, so I've read. I was referring to double cuffs as being common dress.

Shaul-Ike Cohen
04-24-2006, 08:46 AM
To me (and to-day), buttonless single cuffs seem to be much more inconspicuous than double cuffs, but that may be because the mental distinction is made between double = formal vs. the rest.

Senator Jack
04-24-2006, 05:58 PM
Huh? Just get out there. Who cares how conspicuous you are? The 21st Century has proved to be infinitely duller than what we were promised. Cinerama was larger than life. Now we must be cinerama. When people smile at you, you'll know what it's about.

Regards,

Senator Jack

Maj.Nick Danger

Better to be a bit conspicuous, (in a good old vintage sort of way) than to just sit back and let popular culture dictate style.

Senator Jack
04-24-2006, 06:35 PM
Here, here, Major. Well said. I went out to work today in my houndstooth overcoat and bowler hat, driving down the highway in my 66 convertible Mustang. Was I conspicuous? You bet your arse. Did I make people smile? Same again. To hell with the modern day dullards. We're the people making life interesting for them.

Senator Jack

Some of my cufflinks. A nickel for scale. The black rectangle at front is a 20's shirt stud. Note the rather scarce bulldog. My very favorite are the deco mother-of-pearl. Given as a gift, they're from the late 40's. The original owner was a young relative who died unexpectedly in his late teens. Very precious thing due to my having been honored with it.

. . . it encompassed not only my interest in hats, but my passion for cufflinks.

I will endeavor to get a picture of my collection (it may require pictures - I have some 50-60 pairs of cufflinks). Living in a small apartment in Manhattan, and being of an acquisitive nature, collecting cufflinks seemed a natural fit.

Here's one picture of one of my more recent purchases - sterling silver, set with small garnets in a 14K gold bezel.

I wonder why you didn't start a new thread, since this one is about cuff-links, not shirt studs. You might consider posting your question in the General Attire & Accouterments section, as your question may be more relevant over there.

Also, since there are different kinds of shirt studs, perhaps you should describe the structure of the ones you have so that the answers in response to your question will be more relevant to you.

Buttons above the cumberbund (top three or four) have no buttons but a double set of holes. The stud acts as the button. Just like cufflinks do on the wrist.

I had my eye on a set of evening studs by Krementz that included the elusive waistcoat studs, but the bidding got a little out of hand, at least for my budget.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130035268525

Actually, if they're solid 14K, the winning bid isn't out of line, these days.

Marc Chevalier

The prices for these full sets have skyrocketed. Krementz mass-produced the stuff; it wasn't high end.

In the late '80s and even early '90s, you could buy an onyx/gold (or mother-of-pearl/white gold) complete 1920s-'30s set for around $50.

. . . and, believe it or not, there are more photos to be posted, which I will post when next I have the chance. The collection is the byproduct of living in a small space, and having an acquisitive nature - one collects that which one can fit into one's small Manhattan apartment.

That is QUITE a collection of beautiful cufflinks. Wow!

These were apparently my great-grandpa's, found them while we were cleaning my grandparent's house. I like them a lot more than regular cufflinks, I can put them on, then put on the shirt, with no fussing to get the links in.

Here, I'll show you mine first:

http://adamgottschalk.net/links.jpg

My favorites are lower right, the chess kings and the coliseum. I also fancy the pink ones a great deal. I've collected these over the last few months; I started out wanting to find cufflinks that had decorated tabs/insides, as with the brown ones lower left, which have little "pointers" in the same color as the rest on the inside/tab. I would like the kind which are connected by a chain/link instead of having a rotatable tab (like the ones back right), but I can't put those on by myself. The gunmetal black ones, one piece curved with a ball for the inside, are superb, oh so easy to put on, and elegantly simple.

Some of my cufflinks. A nickel for scale. The black rectangle at front is a 20's shirt stud. Note the rather scarce bulldog. My very favorite are the deco mother-of-pearl. Given as a gift, they're from the late 40's. The original owner was a young relative who died suddenly on the basketball court in his teens. Very precious thing due to my having been honored with it.

I mentioned in another post I had picked up a French Cuff shirt. I mentioned it to my mother and she did some digging a ther house and found a pair of cufflinks my father had and gave them to me. I would guess them to be about 35-40 years old. I was wondering if ya'll could help me figure out any history on them. The only manufacturer indication I see is is stamped on one side it says J.M. sterling.

Yes, Fred Astaire wore this same combination in the late 1920s, when he was still performing on Broadway with his sister, Adele.

(Rolled gold, gilt and chrome respectively, I think)

An old favourite - bachelor's button style gilt and glass/paste evening cufflinks with glass/paste studs:

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j281/AnthonyJordan_2006/Accessories/Picture205.jpg

A modern set of studs and links - cream and black enamel by Austin Reed:

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j281/AnthonyJordan_2006/Accessories/Picture212.jpg

Just by way of variation, two watch chains/straps, one a fancy silver link, the other plaited leather:

finally, a brass and celluloid studs and links box:

Those boxes are fairly common over here, actually; I first saw a picture of one in a Shire Album called Gentlemen's Dress Accessories and decided that I wanted one:

The book is quite a good brief introduction to the subject, and does cover cufflinks amongst other things.

Now that I've finally figured out how to post pix, and how to go into the extreme close-up mode on the camera, here are some of my cufflinks. I've got a tie with the hunter's horn on it and usually wear that tie & links around the holidays.

My favorite (since I'm in accounting & taxes) is the set of ledgers. One side is debits and the other credits.

They open to show the ledger sheet inside.

While they may look a bit tacky to modern eyes, brown ones with palm trees are pretty nifty and fairly rare. They're real tortoise shell inlaid with aluminum. They were a popular tourist item from the south seas islands (note the FIJI on the side of yours) and the aluminum would date them to the period during or just after WWII when there was a lot of military scrap aluminum. I have a tortoise ring inlaid with 'SAMOA' in silver that dates from around the turn of the century and a later one with 'FIJI' in aluminum.

No. It's incomplete and so entirely useless. But these old metals are dangerous for the environment. Still, you're lucky, as I happen to be an expert, so just send the set to me, and I'll see to it that they are lawfully taken care of.

(Seriously, it's fine - this is because with a classical dinner jacket and a waistcoat or a cummerbund, you wouldn't see more. In fact, with today's dinner jackets and low-rise trousers, one sometimes does see more, and I find it awkward to see three black studs for the upper button holes, and below them regular plastic or mother-of-pearl buttons that came sewn on with the shirt.)

Thanks!
Mine were hallmarked, which is the only way I know of to tell, apart from taking them to a jeweller for testing. Sometimes the item may be marked 375, 750, 800, 925 etc., or "Sterling" in the case of silver, which serves a similar function to hallmarking in that it shows the precious metal content. (The numbers are parts in a thousand, with 375, 750 and (I think) 950 being gold markings, corresponding to 9ct, 18 ct and 22ct, respectively. 800 and 925 are both silver markings, the latter corresponding to Sterling.)

VB:
Gold ones are by my estimate late 1800's with 10K overlay. I could be certain of this if I saw a sharp scan or image of the back of the cufflink.
Round ones are brass inlaid with mother of pearl, 1920's.

Did you get the box? I am curious to see what it looks like.

Yes! I had seen this kind of box on ebay some months back, was tempted, but never pulled the trigger. There's a local high end men's store that has a traveling vintage cufflink salesman come through a time or two a year. Her prices are out of this world expensive. Think really high, then double that and add some. I happened to stop in a few weeks back when they had some of her stuff on display (really gorgeous links). They had one or two of these boxes. I picked up to see the price and almost fell over. I think I may have blacked out briefly so my memory is a bit fuzzy, but she wanted either two or three hundred dollars for one. I knew then I needed to go ahead and get one (or two).

I paid about $12 each for these with shipping, and one even came from England. All the ones I see on ebay seem to be made in England. The leather on the 'Stud in Hand' one is really stunning. The 'Studs' one has a leather hing for the top that I don't think is going to make it much longer. I have original boxes for my studs, but these are great to hold snap links or silk knots.

I paid D.Kr. 55, about $ 12 - at a Scandinavian auction site. No other bidders. I almost felt like a thief in the night

The vintage bug has not yet caught on in Denmark - especially not among men. So it is still possible to find good quality vintage mens jewellery (and watches - as long as it is a small/unknown brand) at extremely low prices.

In avarage I pay around D.Kr. 80 ($15.50) for a pair of vintage silver cufflinks and around D.Kr. 100 ($ 20.50) for a vintage silver tie-bar. Gold is only a bit more - and golddouble is, suprisingly, often less than silver.

These three are very nice - reminds me of vintage Georg Jensen. Any hallmarks?

Lauritz? B-R? ;)

Thank you :)

No hallmarks on the first two, the third set is marked "Bernhard Hertz"

No, it is neither Lauritz nor Bruun-Rasmussen - I do not trust Laurtiz (too many obvious copies of expensive watches sold at prices low enough to make it impossible to belive that they are in good faith - and way too many modern reproduction fireams sold as antiques) - and I have no personal experience with Bruun Rasmussen.

I have been looking for cufflinks with a maritime theme for a while, I think these covers the theme in a quite a cool and balanced manner

Have you tried buying small stainless steel shackles from the ship's chandler?

Can't comment on Lauritz - I have only good things to say about B-R, though.

Peter Hertz was a very good Copenhagen goldsmith in the early 20th c. - he was a Court jeweller, along with Michelsen (and Georg Jensen). Bernhard Hertz must be a relative - good find!

Nice, Anthony. I can't imagine not wanting to keep those.

I just won this; I paid more than I wanted, but I couldn't resist. It's my last one for awhile...really. Stamped made in England/Saks Fifth Avenue, I couldn't resist. Better pics when it arrives.

^I like the hammered balls, JEEP.

Here are some pics of my new stud box. As stated earlier, this one went a bit higher than I wanted, but I couldn't resist. It was made in England for Saks. I believe it's pigskin, and it has a suede interior. I'm very pleased with it.

Nice snaps Shane.

I got these in the mail a few days ago:

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e259/Jakobeep/Smykker/Manchetknapper28.jpg

Pre 1940 - probably 10s or 20s - silver or silvered, maybe with remains of gilding (I haven't dared to clean them yet - and I am not sure I am going to). Stamped "RJ" and "835". These are, in my opinion, extreamly beautiful - the picture doesn't do them justice at all. The cross-section of the front plate is asymetrical.

I inherited my grandfathers collection of cufflinks, tie clips and shirt studs. Granted I'm a woman but I have a husband that was extremely grateful of the gift lol Here are a few pictures I've chosen the two that are my most favorite. I have no idea what they are made of but they certainly don't make them like this anymore..... (the pics are a little big....)

I don't think they are tigerseye because true tigerseye has black in it, I have not been able to find the stone that it represents. I think the ones on the left may be Zircon. I wish you much luck in your search and thank you & Jeep for your compliments :D

Most of the cufflinks and tiebars I buy on QXL are won without a fight - it seams that there is almost no interest in such things in Denmark at the moment. Lucky for us.

I have just won a bunch of actions over vintage cufflinks and tiebars from the same seller, most of them in mint/near mint condition and in original boxes - only one of the auctions had other bidders. The lot should be in the mail sometime next week - I almost can't wait :)
