Hello Ladies,
There has been a lot of talk about refrence material to the looks of the erea. I thought it might be a good idea to compile them in one thread for us to look through.
Now this is just for listing books, how they rate, and where to buy them, no downloads people.
So share! Lets see those refrences to the looks of the eras we love the most.
Happy posting.

All of the books that I mention below I got at Goodwill except one at the bottom. Now, I will give you a run down of what I have for most awsome reference material:
A couple of weeks ago I found one of the greatest books it's title is:
More Fabulous Faces. The Evolution and metamorphosis of Bette Davis, Katherine Hepburn, Delores Del Rio, Carole Lombard and Myrna Loy By Larry Carr. This book is too cool it has tons and schmons of excellent photos of these 5 actresses and their looks through out the years. Of course all photos are black and white, but the clothes, hair and make-up are absolutly to die for! Plus the book gives a little history on each lady.
I have the biography of Edith Head, I am sorry I can not give any more info on this book because it is in storage and I have not read it yet.
Next I have the book: Louise Brooks by Barry Paris which every Loise Brooks fan needs to have a copy of. It also has a lot of most amaizing pictures of the very lovely Louise Brooks and tells of her life story. I found this book several months ago and I have mentioned it in another thread and I actually started reading it about a month ago but I have not gotten very far because I have about 4 books that I am reading currently.
Then I have: Audrey Hepburn A Biography by Warren G. Harris and another book - title: Audrey Style By Pamela Clarke Keogh. These 2 books are also most wonderful, I have not read them yet but I do love looking at all of the beautiful photos of Audrey Hepburn (of course she is also one of my fav's).
Next book is The Rag Street Journal By Elizabeth Mason aka The Paper Bag Princess. This is a different type of reference book for me it does not show examples of old stars and golden era glitter. This book is about how Elizabeth the author has been buying vintage, coture and big name brand clothing items for probably over 30 years. She only exclusivly buys "all" of her clothing from thrift stores, vintage clothing stores, antique stores, garage sales, estate sales, flea markets and swap meets, she never pays full price and absolutly never buys from a "traditional store". This book lists thrift stores to shop at, how to clean and care for your vintage clothing items. It has a list of the most famous and popular designer names (old and new) and the most valuble ones. It also has a list the most sought after and fine costume jewlery names including the most valuble ones. The book also mentions how to go about selling your vintage treasures the ones you do not want to keep that is. This lady now runs a boutique in California that all of the movie stars shop at (every thing in her store she has aquired through all of the different ways and means that are mentioned above!).
Last book is the one that I did not get at Goodwill and that is: Vintage Faces by Angela Bjork and Daniela Turdich. I know a lot of you on this forum do not like this book especially now that it is out of print and is selling on e-bay for about $300.00 but I only paid $12.95 years ago. I enjoy this book because I owned this book before I started buying books about the old time actresses. I find vintage faces most helpful with golden era make-up suggestions and ideas especially because I am a licensed cosmetologist since 1988 and I also have a freelance license to do make-up artisty, I have done make-up for shows, photography, stage and weddings. Not only did y'all get some book reviews you got a little bit O' history about me in the process.

Decades Of Beauty: The Changing Image of Women 1890s 1990s by Mulvey & Richards was an excellent source for me when I first became interested in the vintage look. The book is neatly broken down by decade with sub-breakdowns of things like Makeup, Hair, Celebrities, Underthings, Movies...a lot of fun stuff! It doesn't really have any instructions, but it will get the ball rolling and there's LOTS of great photos.
http://www.amazon.com/Decades-Beauty-Changing-Image-Women/dp/0816039208/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-4978317-6090250?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1178427851&sr=8-1
Kevyn Aucoin's books were very helpful for me in achieving my vintage look, also. I'm sure we all have his books, though.
Vintage Face is great for the vintage recipes in the back! That's the main reason I won't part with mine.

i looooooove blueprints of fashion as well! i think there was a 50s edition out as well, but i haven't seen it.
Dover puts out a lot of cool books of clip-art from the golden era, some specifically fashipn clip-art, as well as the Sears Fashion series.

the one I am really looking for right now, but that seems completely disapeared, is "1950's hair", the one in the same series as "1940's hairstyles" (which I also want but can't find under 175$, over my budget, but well, I can at least find it!)
that said, I am in desperate need of some very educative books on vintage style, I own a lot of fashion history books, and the book by Aucoin, but I NEED good things on hair, that said, with a lot of illustrations, 'cause I am really bad at hairdo's and as my english is not perfect, i often don't understand written directions :eusa_doh:
does any of you have the perfect solution ?:D
(and I am more into late 40's and fifties)

You can find hairdressing books and magazines on eBay. I have several from the 1940s, and as they were written for teaching stylists, they have a lot of diagrams and pictures.

amelie, i have a few 1950s women's magazines that give instructions for specific hairdo's. so that's something to keep an eye out for when you're going to shops/flea markets! the 1940s hairstyles book has quite a few late 40s hairdos in it, but it's definitely not worth the $$$!
and i also heard the 1950s book never went to print.

My two newest book purchases to help me get the look are "preview"1955 bought in a charity shop for 1.99 it is a full colour book on the movies of 1955 printed at the time with a special section about fashion at the rear with Joan Collins showing her wardrobe. the other is a social history of the 30's and 40's printed in 1956....excellent source book on life in general at that time.

Ladies,
We know that this book is expensive and out of print. We know that pdf copies exist. Those copies are in violation of the copyright of the book.
Discussing the book, talking about its usefulness in actually doing your hair, even sobbing over the price of them, are all fair game. There is a thread for these discsussions here:
http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?t=6059
Please do not post offering them to others here. They will just be deleted. Even if its a PM me...that will also just vanish, so don't bother.
Thank you for understanding that we cannot facilitate copyright violations.

I love the Sears catalogue collection books (the ones with photographs, not illustrations). They are incredibly inspirational both with clothes and hair and are a great resource. I currently own three - Mid 40s, Late 40s and Mid 50s. I still need the Early 40s, Mid 50s and Late 50s.

As well as being fashion obsessed, I am book obsessed, an often combine the two. Can anyone recommend any good books on retro/vintage/pin up fashion? Specifically looking for books that help put a wardrobe together. I have a few reference books about the general fashion at the time and designers of the period, but I was just wondering if there was a book out there for those of us who want to 'live the look' so to speak?

Are you looking for fashion or hair&beauty? For beauty, I almost think the internet is the best resource -- old threads here on the lounge, the Vintage Hair Livejournal, and old beauty manuals that people have scanned and posted are all available for free.
For fashion resources, the most popular books are the Everyday Fashions as Pictured in the Sears Catalog (by decade). I also like books that museums publish on their collections (the V&A in London and the Kyoto Costume Institute both publish great coffee table books). I also came across a great new book recently -- I think it was Vintage Fashion: Collecting and Wearing Designer Classics, 1900-1990. It had a great breakdown by decade, giving examples of silhouettes, popular colors and patterns, and the trends of each era.
Primary sources are the best, though. The Sears Catalog, old movies, old photos. I think it's important to see the real deal for yourself, rather than only seeing someone else's interpretation.

I would suggest catalogs to get a good idea of how outfits were put together from daywear to evening wear incuding shoes and accesories. They give you a broader range of what was available than what we find in vintage/thrift shops. They also give you a guide as to how the clothing should fit and where hemlines should fall for particular styles.

Another book not yet mentioned is Kevyn Aucoin's The Art of Makeup, which includes a single or double pages about the 1920's- 1990's. ISBN #0062730428. This books lists as much as $70 on book sites; but watch ebay, because I've seen it go for considerably less. Just be patient and you can save some money.
I was given it a couple weeks ago for FREE! :D
I might be listing books of interest in my thread: Vintage Betty's Book of the Week (http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?t=25318), so check there occasionally too.

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, MegamiOrchard, but I just borrowed a recently published book from my local library. The title is It's Vintage, Darling!: how to be a clothes connoisseur, by Christa Weil. It's quite interesting for me, as a newcomer to vintage, because it talks about sewing and tailoring methods, fabrics, shopping for vintage, cleaning vintage clothing, building a useful wardrobe, and a few other things, although it doesn't focus on any particular period.
I already knew some of the things the book covers, and some were great to learn, so I thought I'd mention it here.

Have anyone seen a really good book on 30's and 40's shoes? I've only been able to find one with lots and lots of shoes but it's illustrated and I prefer photos.
Then there's these books with shoes of the century but there's not enough shoes that are from "my" era.

I have that book, recieved it yesterday from the slowest seller on amazon. To me it is more of a collection of style/clothes/ration pages from magazines. There isn't really tutorials on makeup or hair that much. I have only skimmed it though. I do not regret getting it, but I too would like : this is what you do and how you do it and this is how the end result should look like.

That particular dealer is a republisher of old books and their books are available under their dealer name on Amazon, Ebay and other book selling locations. The average price of their spiral bound books is $15, and I find this a good deal. Note they only list one book for sale at a time on Amazon, but this is what they do professionally, so it's a clever selling technique. In other words, they have more than 1 book on their shelf available or ready for reprint. The shipping was fast and efficient.
My only complaint was that the publisher put the book in a standard cheap manila envelope and my book arrived bent. When I buy from them in the future, I will be sure to mention this and request cardboard inserts in the package.
As far as beauty books, I have a small but apparently, somewhat rare library of beauty books most of which I haven't catalogued on the Lounge yet. (My actual library is quite large). In fact, I am cataloging my entire book collection over at LibraryThing (http://www.librarything.com) and just catalogued two rare beauty books this morning on a coffee break at work, one of which is selling for $150 and is NOT in reprint (gulp). :eusa_doh: Out of curiosity, if I reprinted some of my antique beauty books, would you ladies be interested in buying them?
My intention was to post snippets to the appropriate thread (hair, nails, etc) as I had the time and NOT post to this thread but instead post to the popular threads where I have found there to be a lack of written material in some cases.
However, since we are posting, what information are you looking for that you feel is hard to find? As time permits, I can post scans from books from my library.

Hello Ladies,
I hope I'm putting this post in the proper place...
I received this fabulous book as a birthday present and wanted to tell you about it, because it ranks among my all-time favorite gifts:
Adrian: Silver Screen to Custom Label by Christian Esquevin
For those who may be unfamiliar with his work, the book is about the designer who was at MGM from 1928-41 and had his own line after leaving MGM in the 40's. Lots of great photos, and detailed descriptions of the fabrications and colors he used.
Reading it, it's amazing to discover how many fashion ideas he invented that are simply taken taken for granted as the way to do things even today. (Most he was never credited for in the fashion world, which at the time considered Hollywood designers inconsequential and of a lower station.)
I won't go into many specifics, because although I was quite familiar with his work, it was great fun to discover new things about it and say "I didn't know Adrian invented that!" It also goes into the "why" 's behind many of his ideas...some of course due to actresses' shapes or preferences, but also to make inside jokes or subtle points about the storyline. (Such as the pin Norma Shearer wore in The Women in the scene where she finds out Steven is cheating on her: It's millitary style, to show her courage in the face of adversity.)
It's a great reference on vintage fashion, and I highly recommend it.

I have this book and LOVE this book. I learned everything about wet sets, pin curls, rolls, etc and have tried so many different styles based on this book. I can't say enough how much value this book has given me - worth every scent.
Now let's encourage Lauren to do a make up book...hint hint hint ;)

Yes, I have the above book. It is a nice book, but not a must have - imho.
It is geared towards clothing, make up and hair, but I wouldn't call it a 'how to book', it's more of an interesting read about post war fashions in Britain. Let me know if you need anymore specific information.

Bought today:
The Art and Craft of Hairdressing - A Standard and Complete Guide to the Technique of Modern Hairdressing, Manicure, Massage and Beauty Culture
Edited by Gilbert A.Foan - Secretary of the Hairdressers' Parliamentary Committee etc. etc.
Illustrated with 10 plates and nearly 400 illustrations in the text, 530 pages including the index.
Can't date it exactly, but it is from between the Wars. Not 'my' period of interest, but such a great book (and vintage 'of the era' fashion and beauty books are so hard to find) I had to buy it. If there is something you are really looking for I can look through the book and when I finally get my scanner (early March) I can send it to you.

I am looking for some books on the following topics:
1.) Makeup:
Face - Contouring
Lining Lips
2.) How manicures were made in the fifties
3.) Shoes; and how to detect great quality and fit
4.) Color combinations (other sources than catalogs maybe?) - any museum catalogs featuring New Look era clothes that you can recommend?
5.) Which vintage clothing can be bought & easily altered by a seamstress (I can't sew) so it fits correctly and stuff like that
Does anyone know books or magazines (that possibly have in-depth information, I love information overload!) on these topics they would recommend?

I'm so excited -- I found two lovely vintage beauty books at my local peddler's mall! Anita Colby's Beauty Book (copyright 1952) and Beauty Glamour and Personality by Ern & Bud Westmore (copyright 1947). The Westmore book has lots of wonderful large photos of stars like Alice Faye, Hedy Lamar, Lana Turner, Sonja Henie, Signe Hasso, Sylvia Sydney, and more. These ladies were so lovely and immaculate. I wish I had a scanner to share with you all!
I like the Anita Colby book because she gives a step-by-step "Four week beauty and charm course."

I just bought the 2nd edition of "Vintage Hairstyling" (well, my husband bought it for my birthday), but I've yet to receive it. I'm definitely planning on taking it to a copy shop and having it spiral bound, as someone suggested on another site.
I also have a few other books, including "How to Handle Long Hair" by Miss Ingerid - it has some lovely tips, and some super goofy hairstyles. I also have "Creative Hair Styling" by Alfred Morris, which I think is a great book. I recommend them for anyone trying to build up a collection of vintage hairstyling books, they include pincurl diagrams and everything!

it is better constructed and mine doesnt fall appart (yet)

May I just sing the praises of another great styling book? This one is from the 1950's, also published by bramcost publications, and it is called 'How to Handle Long Hair'.

The book is a MUST for long haired girls who want to sport vintage styles and I was immediately motivated to grow out my own hair when I got this book. It is so simple to read and so expertly written-the directions are easy to follow and all of the styles are achieved using ONE setting pattern. See my full video review here:

Which was especially written in 1937 with the beginner in mind. Plus there are cute DIY patterns for nightgowns and panties!

... wow what a disappointment! I found that the book required a lot of assumed knowledge, and as it is pitched at hairdressers, the styles are extremely difficult to do on your own head. And I actually wouldn't want to achieve them anyway, as the "11 styles from one set" are seriously overwrought.
It's probably good for the serious vintage-ist and experienced hairstylers, but for a novice dabbler such as myself, it was a massive waste of money.

So I just went ahead and bought it and I'll answer my own question in case anyone else wants to know. :)
There are only 3 "short" hairstyles in the book. The shortest one being a layered chin length cut. And it also has two styles with short bangs that show how to roll those.
But the book is really great overall and all the styles are pretty neat. It has very nice clear pictures of rolling hair that will be very useful once I get some length.

The Art and Craft of Hairdressing by Gilbert Foan---mine is from the mid thirties. This book is awesome. Over 500 pages of swanky beauty tidbits and info. I've spent hours pouring over my copy. Sadly, it is going bye-bye to add to my Christmas fund (you can find it on a major bidding site--am I allowed to write that?)...but I realized I had never posted any pics here. I checked out Vintage Shoes by Caroline Cox at the library, what a great reference! I was really looking for something regarding everyday wear and this is more high-end, but I could not resist scanning some pics of fabulous designer shoes. Has Forties Fashion: From Siren Suits to the New Look (http://www.amazon.com/Forties-Fashion-Siren-Suits-Look/dp/0500514291) been mentioned? It's worthy of mention because it is quite possibly the best book on '40s fashion I have ever read. I wish Walford would write a book like this for every decade of the Golden Era. lol
It's amazing, with large colorful photographs of vintage women's clothes and very detailed information on how the war affected fashion.

It's highly unlikely - Rights to intellectual property are exclusive to the author and do not necessarily expire, even upon their death.
I need to have Retro Make-up by Lauren Rennells! Now that the postal strike is over, I should have it soon :D

It is the 4th edition I think from 1958.
It covers gentleman's hairdressing, ladies' hairdressing, waving the hair, hair styling, art applied to hairdressing, hair colouring, children's hairdressing, historical hairdressing, theatrical hair and make up, cinema and television make up, treatments for the hair and scalp, trichology, and lots of business stuff like wages, advertising and designing a salon.

Brooksie
This book should indeed have a place in each bookshelf! Any woman should read it and take the advice! Great looks, great photos, great pieces of advice and great actresses!

Finally bought Retro Makeup by Lauren Rennells. It should be here by Friday. I'm impatient though and have been devouring the Sneek Peeks at her website since last night...
Since I haven't been wearing makeup for a while, I figured it might give me a swift kick in the pants in the motivation department.

There's a great book from the late 30s called "The Entertaining Lady" by Vera Bloom. She was the daughter of some big-shot in Washington and so she had loads of experience hosting and entertaining people. The book gives great advice and information on hosting, cocktails, meal planning and recipes, choosing clothes, charm and so on. And there are some occasional references to the world situation, too - Depression and all that. It might be hard to find, though - I found it in my university library, which is a real treasure trove of Era reading material, but it's worth reading if you do come across it!

Wow! There are so many great books listed. I could see my library growing over night with a shelf full of new titles. There is one book that is fabulous and fun. That I must agree stands out. The Westmore Beauty Book by Perc, Wally, Bud, Frank, Mont Wetmore. (from the 1950's) Because the book focuses on all around beauty, both inside and out.
The chapters are just great from how to determine your face shape to the shape of your eyes, lips, cheeks, the best colors to use for getting all dolled up. Facial exercises to exercises for the body, even how to make a chin strap like they used on John Barrymore and a little interesting tid - bit that ties into Frownies. Then there are the hairstyles. With lots of illustrations for just about every subject they speak of. Who can forget the beauty quiz! It truly lives up to its name of being a Concyclopedia of Beauty.
