Tricky... if I look at it- it could be '70s- it has the big lapel and patch pockets like '40s-ish but this example is looking very '70s to me. Maybe it's combination of the lapel fullness and height- can't put my finger on it right now.
I'm uncertain but it's just not screaming '40s at me. I've often seen '70s clothing put in the older vintage sections on eBay due to big collars and checks, etc.
Others will surely be able to help.

Heck, even if it is 70's, its still nice looking, and I'd get it. I just bought a suit which I know is not vintage, but I love it because it looks good :)

Edit: I believe the suit I mentioned may be 70's :p May have to get these pants altered....

It's late 70's. Looks like a 100% Poly job to me. Those coats are uncomfortable and they can smell like an old ashtray. I'd pass on it Nick. Wait till the real deal comes along cuz, those buttons on it don't say 40's. The whole look says Love Boat.

I just saw some more pic's of it- the 'waffle' textured fabric and piped pockets are very '70s style. Polyester guaranteed...
