So short! I'm 5'2"... I actually lied on my driver license and added an inch.

Gosh, as long as I was lying, why didn't I add 2 or 3 inches?! lol

But I don't mind being this size... I like taller men and pretty much EVERY MAN is taller at this height!

I'm about 5'6", and lately I've been wearing heels(wedges) most days, and I've gotten several comments about being "tall". That surprises me, I don't consider myself tall, just the tall side of average.

Nikki, were you surprised that movie stars were short or tall?

I'm 5'11! I wear wedges or heels pretty much every day so I'm generally at least 6'1".

I'm funny though, sometimes I wish I were shorter, maybe 5'11" *with* heels, but when I see a taller girl, I get all jealous! lol

It does make dating hard as I think tall girls and short guys look silly, but then, I have never fallen for a shorter guy. I'm starting learning swing dancing next week and I bet I'm taller than most, if not all the guys there!

5ft 5.5 inches! Apparently this is how tall Monroe was (or so I've been told) but I would have to add that is where all resemblance well and truly ends!!;) ;)

Funnily I spent years in flat shoes as I didn't want to be any taller, strange huh? I have always longed to be uber petite and blonde!!!

Well one day I'll get over it!:)

MissHannah

About 5'9", maybe 5'8.5" if we're being picky! No-one ever realises I'm that tall though - probably because I rarely wear heels and most women wear them most of the time. I've been out with lots of men shorter than me, it doesn't particularly bother me. Whenever I wear heels it kind of makes me wish I was a couple of inches taller, but I have enough trouble getting trousers long enough as it is, so not really ;)

I am 5 3/4 so didn't know which to choose. I chose 5'1. :) I was the runt in the family which is large.

I never necessarily wanted to be taller. I just wanted longer legs. If I would of been a man I would of definitely been a leg man.

Coming in at 5'3" here. I always wished I was smaller. To be one of those tiny little 5' tall women that naturally wears a size 1-3 with a size 5 foot. Most assuredly the size 5 foot. But this is all generated by wanting more clothing that I can not fit into.

dollydaydream
03-27-2008, 05:46 AM
I'm happy being small. Or 'vertically challenged' as I prefer. I've never wanted to be any taller, but agree and would like to have a couple of extra inches on the legs. It's so difficult to get trousers that fit without having to take them up!!! I only recently started wearing heels on a regular basis & I've always preferred small men. Well, small, but not smaller than me. That's too small!!

A question to the vertically challeneged though, I don't think I'm *that* small, but people always make comments about it. Do you get the same???

BeBopBaby
03-27-2008, 05:51 AM
It's surprising to see some of the heights here. Especially when you get an impression of how tall people are from their pictures and it's different from the real thing.

I'm 5' 6". The average woman is about 5' 4". I guess that means I'm taller than most, although I've never thought of myself as tall. I've always thought of myself as short. I think because I come from a family of tall people & I'm the shortest out of all of them. I'm small in comparison! :)

LizzieMaine
03-27-2008, 05:57 AM
I'm another 5' 6"er -- and the tallest woman in my family. Nobody in the family going back generations has been over six feet except for my brother, but personally I think it's more the boots he wears.

Folly
03-27-2008, 06:03 AM
My husband's the same height as me, though he does insist he's an inch taller

Being tall, I do have a fascination with men who are taller than me. I've also encountered in the past, some nasty comments about my being, "So tall." like it's a terrible thing to be this height, but I merely shrugged that off as the person being jealous.

alexandra

I'm 5'8" and I don't like being with shorter men at all. I think it's probably because I always date skinny awkward looking guys, so if he's shorter and skinny, and I'm taller and fatter we look like Miss Piggy and Kermit.

I'm 5'3" and usually it doesn't bother me at all. I only get disconcerted when I run across kids (nearly)half my age who are taller than me. My brother, for example, is 12 years old, and already about an inch taller than me. Granted, I know men are usually tall, and growth spurts and all that, but it's still very strange.

KittyT

5'3" here. I'd love to be about 5'6", but no matter. I wear heels when I go out but flats most other times. No one notices once you have heels on, and most guys seem to have complexes about dating taller women anyway.

My boyfriend is a petite 5'7" and he has said that he likes how I'm not taller than him, even when I'm wearing heels.

Sunny
03-27-2008, 06:50 AM
I'm around 5'9" and regularly wear heels, usually 2.25-3". I'm taller than my mother, but HER sisters are taller than me. My dad's 6'8", so I didn't get his family's height.

There are a lot of women 5'7" or more! Can the poll be revised to break that down further?

imoldfashioned
03-27-2008, 06:56 AM
It depends--I've been measured and told the results are anywhere from 5'4" to 5'6" (do I slouch that badly?) I split the difference and say 5'5".

Both my parents were 6' or over but all the women in my greatgrandparent's generation were 5' or under so I think I'm a thowback.

I'm 5'6". I wish I was a few inches taller so I could branch out more with modeling -- I've got the body, but not the height! Oh, well. I'm the tallest one in my family (aside from my father, who I don't live with). My dad's family supposedly has tall genes, but I think I'm done growing.

People tend to think I'm taller than I am, since I'm very lean and leggy.

5'4" and it's probably the only thing about myself i haven't really had a huge problem with at one point! the only time i'd ever really like to be taller is when i try on pants and they're all 8 inches too long, HELLO, i'm 5'4, not 4'5!! my mom and sister are exactly the same height as me.

i have dated guys the same height many times and been VERY glad i'm not taller. it's funny though... they've all tried to pass themselves off as 5'6" or 5'7"! lol my last girlfriend, however, was 5'2 and a good 40 pounds lighter than me, which unleashed a bunch of ugly "why can't I be petite and adorable, you don't even like vintage clothing!" -type issues. (amazingly, she's still my best friend and still lets me dress her up on occasion...)

I'm 5'3" , and never notice that I'm short until I am right next to someone and wnt to give them a hug, or I finally realize I am craning my neck to look up at them.lol There were a couple of times in my life I wanted to be taller.. but really I just wanted longer legs. I have midget legs.. let's just say that the capris they sell in the store... those are PANTS on me. Always. It's so frustrating sometimes. When I was thinner, I could shop in the kids/teens section and buy the husky size. But the length was proper!

Oh and I forgot to mention, my husband LOOOOOOOVES that I am short.. he really likes that my head goes to his chest. something about that makes him happy, and he gets bummed when I wear any kind of heels. I like it, because it's perfect kissing height, but he likes me to be short. hee hee!

Boyfriend is 4" taller than I am and we also have the same inseam. Guys are typically long waisted, while more women are short-waisted. Given that he likes vintage men's clothing with a higher waist, I can usually wear his pants too :)

Not me, I'm all torso. SO long-waisted. I sit next to my 6'1" boyfriend and I am taller than him! Sigh. I have this fond memory of a conversation with one of my friends:

Me: I have the hardest time with pants because I'm long-waisted. I always get camel toe!
Her: What's long-waisted?
Me: You get most of your height from your torso, not your legs.
Her: Oh, I thought that was just called "short legs."

Nikki, were you surprised that movie stars were short or tall?

I can't remember the names, I can't keep up with today's stars. But it was a wide range... some were 4'11", and I didn't know that Brooke Sheilds was 6'!

The two I'm most surprised about here so far are Ruby and Red... I had no idea, you both "seem" much taller! Ruby I seriously would've thought you were like 5'9"!

I wish I was at least two inches taller. Every pound on a shortie magnifies!!

Oh Bella... the dreaded camel toe, ROFL!!!!!!! I'm long in the torso as well and feel your pain. And if I get the next pant size up they're huge in the waist. I've gotta have em fit tight in the rear or I look frumpy dumpy.

Capri pants are not my friend either Shooshoo and Red....
I did find some Docker's petites that I like!
But I find that some petites are TOO short. It's a PITA.

Hannah, the pic with your honey is a hoot. I've seen that before tho and never even noticed till you brought it up!

You know what ladies, I'm glad it's not just me that has the short leg problem!!! I always get really upset when trouser shopping because petite sizes don't fit & are generally a bit too short but 'regular' is sooooo long. Where are all the women that those trousers fit? I'm sure I've never met an 8' tall lady who weighs about 3 stone lol

I also thought I had a long body compared to stumpy legs, but it turns out that when shopping for vintage I'm just stumpy.

Fleur De Guerre

I'm all torso too. I have a good friend who's the same height as me but her legs are about 3 inches longer. Her hipbones are so much higher than mine! But it's remarkable how people vary. She also is thinner than me, but weighs more and has wider hips. I think maybe her bones are heavier than mine? [huh]

You know what's funny? I don't hear anybody saying "oh trousers always fit me just fine"! We're all struggling with too short or too long. There just aren't enough size variations in clothing to accommodate all the wondrous and varied female shapes.

I am not sure if being shirt torsoed (is that a word?) is better then long. I have and like the vintage jeans, side zip, high waisted. My friend was telling me last night I need to pull them up to avoid a pooch in the crotch ( does anyone else get this?). I showed her when I stood up that they already were about 3" from my boobs. Crazy, but I wear them anyway. I would rather have that then the ones that do not cover half of my bottom.

In comparison to you ladies I am average 5'7 but I have been this height since I was in 5th grade and I stopped growing. I was so happyt o get to high school and find some boys taller than me.

With my big hair and 3 inches heels I usually give the illusion of 6 feet. I have always been enthralled with tall men but my guy is 5'8 and has a really tall personality, so it is all good.

You know, I went back and looked at a bunch of blog photos and I think I subconsiously make myself shorter in the photos by tilting my head and shifting my weight to one leg. Hmmmm
This is one of the few photos where I look notably taller and I am definately not standing up straight.

I'm 5' 9" - or 174cm in metric! :p Means I'm about 6' in heels.

I like being considered 'tall', although all the girls growing up now seem to be getting taller and taller. Women in general seem to have been smaller back in the day. My mother at 5' 6" towered over her friends in the late 50s/Early 60s, although my Nana at 5' 1" was never exactly considered anything rather than titchy!

Aww! My mom actually wears capris as regular pants! She's so tiny...

I used to never be able to find pants that fit my inseam! In middle school, kids would always ask me where the flood was. In high school I discovered some designer jeans at the discount stores like TJ Maxx and Loehmann's, and that was a life-saver. So, I've got the length down...now where can I find those jeans with the right waistline?!

I cannot, however, fit into the super-long "supermodel" cuts. It's like they're made for 40-inch inseam-ed amazons in heels!

I'm 5' even. Well maybe 4' 11 1/2 but I'm claiming 5'. I used to HATE being short. When I was younger- especially in high school. But I'm okay with it now. I'm always the shortest in the room. My mom's 5'3 and dad's about 5'9, so I'd didn't have much of a chance. My hubby is 6' and he loves that I'm short- I fit in the shoulder/armpit/crook really good-lol. But if I could be taller, I'd want to be about 5'3"- I know, such lofty goals-lol. But ohairas is right about every pound showing when your shorter. I do okay with petite, especially in pants they are a must. But sometimes the tops are too small. For some reason, they think if you're short, you have no boobs-lol.

And when Bogie first saw Lauren Bacall (5'7, I think) he said "she's an Amazon!" I'm pretty sure Ava Gardner was also about 5'7.

I'm 5'1". I have a sister that's 6' tall, and I can't believe that we came from the same parents.

When I get comments about "you're so short", my response is "but my feet touch the ground, and isn't that all that matters?"

I'm 5'2 and I like being this short. I need very little fabric when I make clothes (it's hard to buy clothes though).

But I sometimes wish I was taller when I can't reach what I want at the grocery store. I once asked a man if he could help me reach a soda and he asked if I wanted him to lift me!
That is awesome. lol lol lol

But I was only 5'2" until I was 20, then I put on three more inches by age 23. I am a freak of nature, I suppose.
I just wish my above-waist dimensions matched my below-waist ones! From the waist up, I am smaller both vertically and horizontally, and arms are short, I have a pin head... if all that was a bit better balanced with the big butt and long legs, I would probably be 5'9" or so, and able to find suits that fit.
No problems with pants as I hate them so much I never, never wear them. Maybe I hate them because they don't fit! They are just always too uncomfortable for words, and so unflattering. Give me a dress any day.

I'm 5'4", ok, 5'3 3/4" (close enough)

Oddly enough, I am the shortest woman on my Mom's side in 4 generations. [huh] I hit 5'3" by the time I was 13 and stopped. By 18 I had eeked out another 1/2 inch, and did another 1/4 sometime after that. Even my twin is slightly taller. Ah well, my hubby may have to reach the tall shelves for me, but I don't have to duck for all the low hanging branches! lol

I am 5'5" and that used to be considered slightly above average. I was happy to be that size as I felt it was the perfect height. That was back in the 50's and 60's when you read articles on the "sad plight" of tall girls, tall considered 5'7" or more (sad because women were not supposed to be as tall as men and the average man was about 5'8" back then).

I am the tallest person in my immediate family. My father and brother lost height as they got older, I did not. Father really got short before he died, my brother is now about an inch shorter than I am. Mother, who was never more than 5'2" is now a shade under 5 feet.

Ever since I could remember, I wanted to be tall. At least 5'10, I would say.

Final result: 5'2". Yeaahhh. Hahah.

I have my days where I detest being short, but those have become less and less. I suppose I've come to accept it for the most part.

What I find to be awfully neat is how many here are in the same height range, as I.

I'm the shortest person I know. Since I'm also small framed, I get called, "compact" in size.

It should be interesting to see how my 3 daughters end up. Eldest Miss should be tall, maybe not as tall as I am (5'10") but up there. Middle Miss might be petite, my FIL is shorter than I am, but his younger brother is 6'2" or 6'4". Seeing the brothers together is like the movie Twins with DeVito and Schwarzenegger. FIL's mom was petite, so Middle Miss might take after her. Little Miss, though 2.5 yrs younger than Middle Miss, is only a few inches and not many pounds behind her sister. My mom is shorter than I, but all the men on my father's side of the family are 6'2" and above. So who knows what will happen with my girls. Middle Miss might shoot up in a few years.

I'm too short to be statuesque/striking and too tall to be considered cute. I like how tall I am for modern clothes - but I'll admit I'd give anything to be a petite wee lass to fit into some of the great small sized vintage out there. Can you imagine the shoes if you were were a 4-5 narrow! I've dated all sizes of boys. I tend to prefer the taller ones so I feel more petite in their arms. However the love of my life is barely taller than me in flats and we are eye to eye when I put on the heels.

It's funny - there are quite a few of you ladies who I pictured as much taller than you are in actuality.(Nikki - I was convinced you were at least 5'-9"). It must mean you know how to dress yourselves to look all legs and lean!

It's being tall that put me off cottages (random, eh?) as my in-laws live in a 16th century cottage and in heels my head touched their ceiling and I used to hit my head going through doors unless I ducked first. I used to walk in a constant stoop there, I felt like an amazon.
As it is, I live in a modern cottage myself and even though the ceilings are higher here, I often hit my head on the light fittings when wearing heels.

I once lived in a house built in the 1840s, and had the same problem -- the top of my head grazed the water pipes hanging from the kitchen ceiling, and it was impossible for anyone over 5-foot-9 to stand up straight in the room. It was like living in a doll house -- I doubt the builders of the place had been over five feet tall.

I allways thought Lauren was taller! But I guess the fella wasn't as tall as they are today. Isnt Gary Grant one of the tallest actors abck then?

I think you may be right that she was taller than 5'7. I didn't mean to cause the impression that Bogie was short! In Bacall's autobiography, By Myself, she says that he was 5'10-1/2. Another Bogart-Bacall biography says that her height was the first thing that impressed him about her, and claims that at "a shade over 5'9, he would have been only an inch or so taller than Betty [Bacall] if she was not wearing high heels." I am going with her figure, since that means Bogie would have been "a shade" taller than me (in flats, but oh well - I'd do it for Bogie)! I could probably have worn heels with Cary, though!

I'm really interested in the association so many women seem to have between their own height and that of the men they date.

Why is that? Is it because it seems to make men feel more confident about their, erm, tall manliness? Or does it make you feel more protected...? Are taller men just more desireable? I'd love to hear what this is all about.

Note: I hope this isn't taken as a negative point. It's just an observation.

Well being tall myself, I love tall men, it makes me feel more petite and yes, it makes me feel like they're more of a protecter for little ol' me ;) so yea, that's a reason why, of course there has to be personality and everything else that goes with it too!

Like I said earlier, my thing is about not feeling like Kermit and Miss Piggy.

Also, I already have a really strong personality and have a tendency to try and wear the pants in the relationship, so if I'm the man there and I'm taller and bigger...well then I don't feel like a woman. And even though I sometimes act like a man, I really prefer a constant power struggle for who will be the Alpha Male of my relationship :P

I'm 5'10" and have for most of my adult life been on the overweight side of the BMI scale. Men taller/larger than me make me feel not as much as a lump, and I'll admit it, I'm not a Type A personality so I like feeling dainty.

I don't know what it's all about really. I'm 5'2 and have never dated a man under 6'2. The tall, slender, dark haired man catches my eye every time. His height comes in handy when we're out at a crowded event, I can always find him if we get seperated.

I am about 5'4 and wouldn't mind being a couple of inches taller, though just some longer legs would be fine! I've always felt quite small because most of my male friends are very tall and over 6ft. My ex was 6'4 so I feel like I can't date smaller guys now which probably sounds very silly! The only time I feel tall is when I visit family as Chinese people are typically quite tiny and I feel like a giant lol I am usually in heels so some people, particularly at my workplace where I'm hardly ever in flats, probably don't realise how small I really am.

5'7" and I love it, too, but I have the same problem. I hate pant hems that float around my ankles! Brings back memories of awful childhood taunts: "Hey, doofus, where's the flood?" :eusa_doh:

Also, with long legs come the long arms. When I was a kid, my brothers called me "The Gibbon." Oh, well, I rarely need a stepstool to get stuff off high shelves, and I roll up my sleeves a lot so my wrists aren't poking out by their lonesomes! lol

I dated one short guy, maybe 5'6" and I was really miffed when he picked me up for our first date and he asked me to change shoes (heels were "too high"). While my hubby is average height and build, I usually prefer a big guy, usually closer to 6ft, but not over and a little-to-moderately overweight. That's an excellent observation, gluegungeisha! You're probably right about the confidence factor, protection, and desirability. That probably sounds really stupid. But when you're a fiercely independent, almost 6ft amazon with a fiery temper, shorter weedy guys just aren't going to cut it as a potential mate. lol

I am officially undertall for my weight, my bone structure and my shoe size!

Believe it or not, I weigh 180lbs but wear a size 12 trouser/jean. I'm officially five feet seven and three-quarter inches tall. My shoe size is "Extra Sasquatch" - 43 Eur, 11 US. Had I actually grown up to my feet, I feel I would be at least 5'11" or maybe even 6' tall in my bare feet. Where my height came from, I know not because I came from runty people - I was taller than my father by the time I was 16. My brother is about 6'2". My sister is my height, but with much smaller bones and hence weighs nearly 40lbs less than I do, dagnabbit. I enjoy wearing heels on dressy occasions, although my feet are usually killing me inside of an hour. Finding fab shoes in my size is a real challenge. Finding pants long enough to suit me is, too - my legs are too long for average lengths and too short for long lengths - drives me crazy!

When I met and married my husband, I was really happy that he was 5'11" tall - I liked being able to look him in the eye even if I was in flats but was still shorter than he was if I wanted to glam it up in heels. What I didn't realize is that being so close to him in height meant he had no intention of even trying to carry me over the threshold after we married! I have my moments when I wish I were shorter, lighter and with smaller feet because I really want to be carried over the threshold. And Fleur, you are so right about little guys being unsuitable mate material for a tall, independent woman - and even though I'm not tall compared to you, growing up I was quite tall until high school and I never ever instilled a protective instinct in a single male I met until I met my husband. Nonetheless, his protective instincts stopped short of fulfilling my girly dream of being carried over the threshold! *pout* Sometimes I feel very unfeminine because of my height and large bone structure and massively large feet and hands - my feet are bigger than my husband's (lengthwise, but he's got me in width thank God!) and my hands are only slightly smaller than his. None of this, natch, bothers him, but if Duane 'The Rock' Johnson ever comes calling, I'm getting carried over a threshold by God!!! :D ;) :p

I'm part of the 5'2" crowd and like it (aside from the fact that every little pound seems to make a difference).

Most of the guys I've liked have been tall, with a few exceptions. Could be coincidence, though I have joked before that it's some biological impulse telling me to balance out the next generation's height, ha.

a lot of y'all have said you gravitate toward guys much taller than you, but in my history of dating men, i gravitate toward guys either my height or 2-3 inches taller! my boyfriend is 5'5" so i'm taller than him in most of my shoes! he's used to it though - his ex is 5'9"!

I have always dated guys much taller than I but my new boyfriend is somewhere between 5'6 and 5'7 (I'm 5'2) and I think that is a perfect length. I don't have to stand on my toes to kiss him and I can keep my head straight when I look him in the eyes. And I can still wear heels without getting taller than him!

Funnily enough, the longest relationship I've had (and closest I've come to marriage) was with a chap who was a good couple of inches shorter than me. He didn't have any hangups, either - he positively encouraged me to wear heels if that was what I wanted to do. Sort of the anti-Tom Cruise. Had a lot of presence, though, as he was a merchant navy officer. In general I'd express a preference for someone around my height, but there's so much else that comes into my choice of partner.

You know GGG, you can still model at your height, just not runway.

No, I have the opposite problem. Even buying petite pants, they're still too long. The worst is "short" jeans. It's pretty common for me to buy short jeans, then still have to cut off 3-4in from the hem.

I'm 4'10"ft and I rarely wear heels. I rarely do anything to appear taller. There was this formula for calculating some leg ratio length in the Daily Mail last year I think it was and my legs are actually relatively longlol It was a beauty ideal thing and a certain ratio was considered most attractive. So my legs are actually unattractively too longlol I have a high, low waist. A nightmare to dress btw.:offtopic: Sorry, I find it difficult to stay on topic because I write like I talk:o

The exception was when I was in London but I didn't see any other ladies in heels except for the odd older Italian lady tourists. I thought more women in cities than smaller towns wore heels:confused: Actually, most women in London appear to be walking around in flip-flops!:offtopic:

Lillemor
06-04-2008, 03:38 AM
When I do the cm conversion, the difference between me and someone who's 5'2"ft seems endless!lol

I don't think we have petite shops around here and even relatively short older women are taller than me so even if I find something vintage it'll probably be ill fitting from the waist and down or if it has long sleeves. Dresses are really complicated even if they're long because then they don't fit right through the middle.

I recently found some regular high water jeans that fit like regular jeans but usually high water or capri jeans just "float" around my ankles. Regular "short" lengths are always too long.

Inside leg - floor measurement is 70cm or roughly 27½" I'd want pants and full length skirts to fall to 26½" or 68cm. 65cm/25½" may be the right length for some long skirts.

Rachael

I'm just shy of 5'10" and I wear heels almost every day. I figure once you clear a certain height, you're tall anyways so might as well show off some leg. Besides, I can't find any vintage flats that I like.

as to dating shorter men, I only did that once and it ended very badly. Now it's not a preference thing as much as a bad karma thing; not that it matters now that I'm no longer looking.

I am a little over 5' 10" like Rachael, and I like wearing high heeled boots, but as much as my boyfriend loves them, he hates that I end up 1/2 an inch taller than him. I think that's one of the biggest problems with wearing high heels, I get enough stares from the hats I wear and my outfits, sometimes I just don't want that much attention!:(

Ah height is fun. I'm 5'6, but have always felt really tall because I was one of the tallest kids in class until about 12 or so when the boys and other girls caught up. Now when I'm in pictures and stuff I'm just so surprised that others are taller when I perceive them as shorter. I'm also the shortest one in my family except my mom (we argue over who is taller when I suppose we are exactly the same height). All 4 of my younger sisters have surpassed me and my brother is 6'4 and has always surpassed me. lol. Weird, I always wanted to be shorter when growing up because of towering over my classmates, but now I realize I'm a good height and am happy with it. If I were any shorter I wouldn't be able to disguise my extra pounds nearly so well. It's interesting to read how tall everybody on here. What variety.

I'm 5'5 which is pretty average but have always felt incredibly short, somehow I've always had tall friends and my family are all huge! I am the shortest in the family by 3 inches. All my Mom's siblings are over 6'. I almost always wear heels or wedgies though, so often that my bf (whom I've known since I was 10) was convinced that we were only an inch apart, when I take off the shoes I come up to just below his nose.

I am just a bit over 6' (185 cm). So all those jeans that are too long for you average ladies are still too short on me. My current jeans are gap xlong's and they are barely long enough. Vintage clothing simply doesn't exist in my size, even though I know I had relatives that were my size in the late-1800's and early 20th cent.

Fortunately my 6'2" boyfriend couldn't care less if I am taller than him when I wear heels. Plus he always wears a hat, so he looks taller. :)

Oh that's another thing, I like my men older. The oldest guy I've ever been with was 10 years older than me and I used to like to say "You know, when I was 5 you were 15. Just pointing that out you creepy old man!" because it made me laugh.

I stretched that a bit by dating, for a few months, a 21 year old when I was 37, and we used similar jokes on each other. By the way, we were both 5'8" and could wear each other's shoes. lol It seems I've always, somehow, dated women who were about the same height as me; usually about 5'7". Pure chance, though, as a woman's height isn't a factor for me.

Later this month, I'll be 5'9".

EDIT: Oh yeah! My younger brother is 6'2" and his fiancee is 4'11"-1/2.

A question to the vertically challeneged though, I don't think I'm *that* small, but people always make comments about it. Do you get the same???

All of the time! I'm 4' 10" and often when I meet new people the first thing that comes out of their mouths is something to the effect of "Wow, you're so SHORT!". I've gotten used to people saying this though.

My fiance, who is 6' 2", fondly calls me "travel sized". Comes in handy when flying on an airplane and trying to navigate through crowded rooms :p

I stretched that a bit by dating, for a few months, a 21 year old when I was 37, and we used similar jokes on each other.

the rule I usually find hold true for dating and age is: half plus seven. so if you're 14 you can only date 14 year olds. But if you're 40, you can date as young as 27. The idea being that the older you get the less age matters. So at 37, 21 was just at the low range of your dating pool. at least by my theory.

Reviving an old thread because I can't sleep.

I'm 5'7" ... the short one of the family along with my aunt who is the same height. I always expected to be tall growing up because I was always taller than everyone in school, and my mom is 6', but I just grew very fast and then stopped! I like my height though. I know what a difficult time my mom has always had shopping for clothes, and my gramma at 5'9" always had to make all her clothes back in the day. The tall genes come from the Danish side of the family. My dad's side is more average height. My dad is 5'9" -- he's all torso though and my mom is all leg, so when they sit down they are the same height.

I'm 5'9" - not quite there, but I know what you mean. The problem is I have a naturally high waist (2" above my navel! yikes!), plus long legs. So sometimes it's very hard to avoid the babydoll-dress effect. I love my heels, though.

I'm 5'8 1/2. Almost all the women in my family were tall for their generation. Two of my G-Grandmothers were about 6 feet tall. The others were just a few inches taller than the average of their day.

I wish I was a little shorter. I know shorter people have a hard time with clothes, but a least you have fabric to work with. The taller gals have NO fabric to work with. So with trousers, you can end up with floods!! EEK!

Veronica I am 5'9" also and am from the States. That's tall for a lady here too, I would say the majority of women in this country rage from about 5'5" to about 5'7". Generallly pants are too short for me so I just go for the long sizes, and since apparently people think if you are tall you must be bigger around I struggle to find tops that fit right as I am a small some times a medium on top, and sleeve are hardly ever long enough on me so they get pushed or rolled up.

I'm a little under 5'7". In Australia I always felt short, but I'm quite tall in the UK! There is 1 woman and 2 men in my office who are taller than me.

Puzzicato, I know what you mean in Australia, I am as I stated above 5'9" which here int he states is rather tall for a woman. But in Australia I felt plain tiny, it was an odd feeling. But when I go to Japan I feel ridiculously tall more like a mountain that a person. And it doesn't help that my boyfriend is so tall that he makes me look petite.

not quite 5'2", so pretty short. wearing 4" heels makes me feel really tall but in reality it only brings me up to average lol

I'm about 5'7" and a half, at one point I reached 5'8". I still favor ridiculously high heels...my husband is almost 5'11" and I frequently stand taller than him when we both have shoes on.

Each generation of women in my mother's side of the family has been exactly one inch taller than the preceding generation. I hit 5'8", mom was 5'7", Gram was 5'6", her mom was 5'5". Amusing.

Most of my height is waist and neck, so I don't have trouble with pants being long enough (I've got a 30" inseam) but dresses and tops can be a nightmare. Nothing hits my natural waist and sleeves hover inches above my wrists.

That's very cool! My mum is about 2" taller than me.

The next generation is ridiculous though - I have 2 nieces (1 my husband's family, 1 mine) who are well over 6', and a nephew who is 6'5" and hasn't stopped yet. And the little wretches pat me on the head and tell me I am cute and little.

I'm 5'2", in a family of 5'8" sisters and a 6' brother (who is still growing). I'm quite content with my height...until I realize that my fiance has put something I need on the top shelf of the cabinet.

All of the time! I'm 4' 10" and often when I meet new people the first thing that comes out of their mouths is something to the effect of "Wow, you're so SHORT!". I've gotten used to people saying this though.

What I think is funny is that they usually seem to comment on my height months later like one day the will say "Hey your really short (5'1" and I rarely wear much of a heal)". I always want to tell them their powers of observation amaze me.

6'1" or 6'2". I'm till trying to get over the odd looks when I'm wearing a shoe with any bit of heel! Not to mention sometimes feeling as though I'm on a private balcony is a bit odd.

I'm 5'4 but usually wear heels or wedges around 4" tall. I'm okay with my height don't like the fact that my fiance and I are almost the same height when I wear my tall shoes!

Private balcony is exactly it! I'm 5'10". The fella is 6'4" so I still wear whatever heels I like, although when we're together I feel like we're popping out of a sea of heads like a submarine periscope.

Teeny, tiny 5 foot nothing...petite sizes don't even start until 5'2 Hmph!

Oh I know, isn't it a bear? Petite trousers that still need hemming are maddening! I'm barely 5'1" on a good day. My mom is shorter than I, so I knew I was in for it when I stopped growing taller at 12. I rather like it now, though :)

I'm 5 8" and I hate it. I rarely wear heels because I feel like I tower over everyone. Just wish I was 5 6". I like to be with a guy that is taller than me (last exes long term were 6 2" and 6 ") but lately guys seem to be all shorter than me. I also hate being taller than all my female friends bar 1. Makes me feel like a giant :(

I'm barely 5foot2...but still about 3 inches taller than my mother! I have the same experiences as Land-O-LakesGal in that people generally don't notice how short I am until they know me a few months! I always stand beside the person who's shorter than me...makes me look taller :D

But all in all it's a good party trick, I wear out my highest of heels (just over the 4 inch mark!) when socialising and at some point during the night will remove them...very funny when the person you've been speaking to has had a few drinks and does a complete double take then blames it on the beer!

One of my friends in college was 6'7" and his wife was almost 6' herself. She had naturally big hair and an appreciation for heels, which made her seem even taller. She had a gargantuan engagement ring, but no one ever noticed how huge the stone was because they were such tall people it just fit.

I'm comfortable with my height now, but when I was in high school I wanted to be either petite or really tall, like over 6'. I have no idea why.

I'm 5' 8" and think it's the perfect height. I've been this height since I was in my early teens and I've always loved it. Not too tall, so I generally fit in aeroplane seats and standard "long length" clothing, but tall enough so I can generally see whatever I'm trying to see, rather than other people's backs.

I felt like a giant in Japan when we spent some time there a few years ago, but I'm used to being taller than most women anyway. It was just odd being taller than the men. And I felt like a midget in the Netherlands, where I was surrounded by strapping blonde gods and goddesses! You Dutch are a striking people.

That reminds me - a couple of years ago we spent a couple of nights in Hong Kong. We got to our hotel, went to the desk and the concierge's eyes opened wide and he said "Oh, you are too big for the room - we have to put you on the other side of the building" lol :o

I'm 5'2" and hubby is 6'1", but I've nearly always preferred tall dark & handsome lol Nearly always wear some form of heel if I don't I feel like I'm waddling. I don't really notice being short until in a group of really tall friends. I'm long waisted so short legged, my dad calls it ducks disease, low down bum and flat feet....he has it too although he's the taller version at 6'.

Piece of trivia
My dad's cousin was 6'8" and worked on a cruise ship back in the day and apparently there is a photo of him and John Wayne shaking hands across a table tennis table.....lengthways. Don't ask me where the photo is though...

That's so funny! I wonder what size the room were on the first side.

When we flew in to Tokyo that gave me the first clue that I was a giant in a land of non-giants. We were right at the back of the plane when it taxied up to the gate and everybody stood up to get their bags and disembark. My husband asked, "Do you see that flight attendant up by the front door?" and I said yes. Then he pointed out that never in our lives before had we been able to see the front door from the back of the plane. We could see over the heads of everybody in front of us lol
