The best label is Lilli Ann (in my opinion) but those usually go for a bomb.

I agree with the Lilli Ann thing, nearly every piece of Lilli Ann I've seen has been exceptional in design and the kind of thing that I could never really afford to buy. Well not unless I had myself sewed into it and wore it every day for ever and to my grave!!!lol lol
What do I look for? Definitely nipped in waists, and shoulders that fit well, and darts at the elbow.
I also love the little notch you get on good 40's suits just at the back of the collar, and the little weights that get sewn into the hem of the jacket. I found a green tweed suit in my exact size with all these details with the matching swing coat, but it took a couple of years for it to turn up.
One thing I've learnt about vintage shopping is that you can't make it happen you have to wait until it kind of comes to you!!!!
I'm sure that you'll find some really great suits out there with just a little patience and perseverance.

You can always check out the pattern envelopes on the Vintage Vogue site for inspiration too. Or, just buy the pattern and have one made up for you :D
I have this one (originally printed in 1947):

And then there's this one (originally printed in 1944)

Also a fairly high neckline. And high armholes!
Many of them had a lot of piping, pockets and other details missing in today's androgenous black pantsuits.

I just bought that Vogue pattern (my mom, a complete saint is going to make it for me) but I'm not sure what fabric to buy, I'm stuck for colour really. I really love grey but I wear quite a lot of it already, I'm not sure about brighter colours but I saw Kitten Von Mew (she's a pinup model) wearing a pale blue suit that she looked gorgeous in.

But being terminally pearshaped (at any weight) I have never had one that was a really good fit, and I think the fit is the most important thing in a suit. Gabardine is my very favorite.
I do have a beautiful burgundy suit, but it is from the one week in my adult life where I was a size 2! I was wearing it when I met mi espozo, and cannot bear to let it go. But it is like, well let's see, which thigh do I wear it on?
Above is a pic of a few of us gals (me left), and what I liike about it is, we're all in suits, but some are separates or contrasting colors, some short jackets, some long, different ways of fitting and fastening, but all 30s and 40s!
It's hard to see behind the train case, but mine is an asymmetrical black gabardine Lilli Ann... love it.

I love it, too. One day soon, I'll set aside enough time to attempt it :) I have visions of a two-tone suit in burgandy with black side panels...
Miss1929, that's a fantastic group photo! Everyone looks perfect!
Miserabelle--there are lots of nice light-weight suiting fabrics at Joann's, and they're in very spring-appropriate colors. I used to own a pink suit that I just LOVED, and I bet the pale blue suit you mentioned it fabulous.
Also, if you really love grey, you can start out with a pale, dove grey, or a fabric that's a blueish gray.
:offtopic: Nice avatar, Matt Deckard!

This thread is long overdue. I'm glad women's Golden Era's suits are finally being posted, if not I was going to post the topic myself.
It's sad women's suits don't have this much design or class put into them anymore.
By the way you look great retrogirl1941

I'm bought a couple things from this seller. I specifically had her do a 40s style from a pattern picture as a custom job. She was willing to do this and the price was reasonable. She was able to execute the design and the fit is very good. Initially there were some problems with fit, but she was extremely responsive and re-did the job quickly. As this was a totally new design, some issues are to be expected.
My only dissatisfaction is the fabric that was used, but it was one that I chose without having a sample in hand, only on looks online. If I were to do this again, I would choose fabric by samples. She does supply fabric swatches with orders and I would have to believe would, if asked she would send out swatches pre order if one were to ask. Having some of her samples in hand, I see some choices that would have been better for the suit,
I will get up some pics, particularly since she is able to do a 40s style that isn't listed on her site.

I own a ton of vintage suits and vintage jackets.
And I have a lot of reference material. If you could post what type of things you are looking for, I can provide photo samples for your consideration before you get something done so you can see it on a mannequin.
However, I realistically won't be able to start this offer until after the first week of April...many things due at work.
And...I love shoulder pads in vintage suits - they help define the cinched-in waist. In the meantime, I'll see if I can post some photos I previously posted in the What Are You Wearing Thread so you can see some of my suits (warning: bad photos ahead).

VintageBetty, I couldn't pass up your offer - how wonderful! I wear suits every day for work, so I always have them made for me, as I can never find well tailored good looking suits in the mainstream shops.
Would love some piccies of anything you may have which would be suitable for a corporate environment - I too love the cinched in waist. Thanks!

Oh, Vintage Betty, your suits are wonderfull. I wish I could grab the black and white one of the screen, its to die for! The Lilly Ann is also very beautiful! Your reproductions look like very good work. I guess you use a propper tailor?
Nope, they were from a company that went out of business.
However, I've gained some weight recently, so almost none of my suits currently fit. :eusa_doh: Time for a diet...

Wow! Those are beautiful.
Nothing like a woman in a suit.
Ever worn them to work? or just to vintage occasions?
Thanks a bunch! You are looking at a small part of my collection from 27 years of collecting women's suits.
I used to wear them to work all the time. However, it's gotten kind of expensive to dry clean, so I don't wear them so much anymore.
When I start wearing them again regularly, I'll post more pics. I'm a suit gal. I have a very large suit collection. I have some great ones I haven't posted yet, so you can look forward to them in the future. :)

No it isn't, but somewhere on the Lounge, there is an entire discussion on that subject - whether this suit was a man's converted suit. It was decided that it wasn't a converted suit, just a ladies suit copied in the men's fashion of the period. [huh]
Most men commented this is the first ladies suit they have seen with a skeleton interior.

There is no doubt that many 40's styles were fabulous for women. Especially the early 40's, and I respect immensely women's ingenious uses for fabrics that were rationes (say goodbye to the suits, boys. We're making them over for ourselves... I can hear Daniel gasping right now!). However, if you compare many 40's styles they look very 1980's. Maybe not "hollywood" 40's, but take a look at some of the sewing patterns and catalogs from the mid 40's.
I think that the color palate of clothing of earlier decades shock many people. In my studies of costume, the victorians, who supposedly wore mostly black (due in part to the death of Prince Albert and Queen Victoria's choice to wear black from the time her husband died until her death) actually had a miriad of colors to choose from. I have seen some very bizarre color mixes (like bright yellow with pink, chartruse and orange, etc). No matter what era, suits look flattering and daring on a woman. Some of my favorite suits date to around 1907-1912, when the empire waist was still higher and the cut slim (think the boarding suit in Titanic). Then with the great war, women adopted a more masculine version of the suit. By the 20's it became a staple in the working woman's wardrobe... women had found the ability to hold a job that didn't nessecarily involve domestic service or factory work (think the shirtwaist factories in New York), and they were unwilling to give all the jobs back to the boys following WWI. The 30's found the classes merging and ready made clothing being available to the lower class woman as well as her high society sister, although in differing qualities of fabric, and many women were taking up office work and wore suits in order to town down their sexual femininity (considered a threat to the workplace) that was portrayed in many dresses of the time . This continued to the adoption of pants as early as 1933 to more "daring" women, and the suit and pantsuit were a more sensible alternative to a dress in WWII, as the woman now had seperates to mix and match to make her wardrobe more versitile. The suit is fasciniating in my opinion, not merely for asthetic value, but social history.
This is such a fantastic summary of ladies suits I wanted to bring it forward three years and have people read it, in case they happened to skip it.

From Lauren's "anatomy of a garment" thread:
. . . that i have one of the Baroness's jackets in bits today. (need to re-form two waist darts that someone had unpicked. [Sigh, a man's work is never done :eusa_booh ])
here's the jacket. Lovely purple & beige herringbone with great self-fabric doughnut buttons. The flap for the other faux pocket is missing.
http://homepage.mac.com/misskat0/baronkurtz/BaronessJacket1.jpg
it's interesting - when one is used to men's jackets - that womens jackets have so little interfacing. This one has only a little (black) in the skirt and a bit off cotton wool padding at the pocket area.
http://homepage.mac.com/misskat0/baronkurtz/BaronessJacket2.jpg
I really like this pleat. We see them sometimes in sports wear for men, but on the back - the action back. This one is clearly for bust allowance and some mobility, i guess.

It looks a bit shapeless on the dummy, but it's fabulously curvy and the perfect size. Plus excellent condition! I don't know if the beige is a bit drab though.:eusa_doh:
Fleur, it's a fabulous suit! Subtle, yet sexy - love it and can't wait to see a piccie of it on you! Send the cheque!

I want to see whatever anyone wants to show:)
Seriously, this thread is very educational for me. Vintage clothing, and especially 40's clothing is so terribly hard to find in this part of the world (Sweden), and I don't think I've ever seen a 40's suit "live". Only in films and photos from the time. I also find that suits is something that my wardrobe is lacking in, and I am considering having one or two made for me. This thread is giving me lots of ideas!

There are some very interesting points to be made in favor/against vintage vs reproduction suits.
I'll try to write up something sometime, but first, I'd be interested to see if anyone has any opinions on the subject.
I'll give one tip: Before I wear any vintage suit, I always re-sew the buttons onto the jacket. I've lost too many buttons by believing that the thread is still solid.

I, for one, am very interested in any kind of information regarding this! And thank you for the tip on buttons! Occasionally swedish Ebay will have sets of vintage buttons up for auction, if I have a repro suit made, I'll probably get vintage buttons for it.

Hello MissS-I'm sorry that I have been the cause of your envy! It's important to note that I started collecting suits when no one wanted them, and so they were simply "given" to me.
I hung around an antique store (I had a crush on one of the brothers there) and I got some clothes when they found them in the furniture occasionally. I think that happened 2 or 3 times total.
I actually don't own any vintage pantsuits. I also don't own any vintage pants - don't ask me why; I guess I'm just a coat and jacket person. Would you like to see reproductions?

Sadly, the photograph pays poor homage to how beautiful this suit is in reality. It was really breathtaking, I kid you not, and looked as though it had been tailored for Lola. This is the quality of suit that Jackie Kennedy or Grace Kelly would have been proud to wear - trust me.

Thank you for the nice words! Yes, this is a favorite that I'm definately keeping. If I was younger with less experience purchasing coats and jackets I might have passed on this jewel.
You see, I found it all wrinkled with cobwebs and dust. And when I say wrinkled, I mean wadded into a ball and than somewhat smoothed out again. If memory serves, someone stuck it on a wire hanger and I found it in that condition. I'm sure the price of this beauty was less than $65, I'm pretty sure it was $45.
Just wanted to state those facts, as sometimes things aren't what they appear to be.

A friend of mine was able to acquire a 1940's blue gaberdine suit for me, it was my very first vintage outfit of my own! (having only been wearing vintage since December) also the hat was acquired at the same time... I'm trying to make my collection grow though, I would love to have more and more suits, anyway, here is a pic of my suit from when I went to the Cicada Club in January:
http://a519.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/85/l_9d8aa737861b415b5ab36322240c3b76.jpg
I also have another suit, but I'm not sure what year it is, I thought 1940's, but my friend said early to mid 1930's, so my guess is as good as any, oh yea, and sure the hat isn't a perfect match, but it was NOS 1940's, so I had to wear it! lol here's a pic of that suit from last week at Cicada (come visit me hah):

I've seen several booklets from the 40's on how to make a ladies suit from a man's suit so perhaps that's what happened here? I defer to Vintage Betty though, she's our resident expert.

Based on the label, and the darting in the bust, it does appear to be a man's suit. I've never seen that type of darting in all the time I've been collecting vintage suits and the kick pleat seems awfully high, but perfect if it's a converted set of pants. The bust darts are very common today, but I've never seen them in a vintage suit in the style represented.
Now it makes me want to get my suit out and give it a once over. Maybe I've been wearing a man's suit too?
We can compare points, but it would explain the skeleton interior in both suits. I just found another minor version of a skeleton interior this weekend and I will be posting pics shortly.
Hmmm....imoldfashioned, can you post some details of your booklets? The information might clear up this mystery.

The former Duke of Windsor and his wife. He was known for dressing well. He abdicated the throne of Great Britain to his brother because he was in love with a women who had been married twice before and divorced. Public sentiment was against her and her past so he gave up the kingdom in favor of love.
The Duke was also known for beign a nazi sympathizer.
Yes, I think the Duke was best known for:
1: abdicating the throne,
2: being a Nazi sympathizer, and
3: being one of the best dressed men of the 20th Century, lending his name to the Windsor knot.

Ooooo, I just found this thread!
Wearing a classic 40s navy suit to work today. Feels really good! Don't usually wear the vintage to work but going to a show tonight up London so went nuts.
I have just cleaned a ladies cream 1920s Palm Beach suit for a friend. Yes, you read that correctly - a real, 20s, Ladies Palm Beach suit. It was a bit grubby so worked my magic on it. It is very interesting and I will be taking some pics of it and will post them here as soon as possible. It has very minimal wear. A friend who works in a militaria shop found it in a pile of stuff and gave it to my chum.
I think it must be a very rare example as I have never even heard of a ladies Palm Beach suit, much less seen one. Can anyone enlighten us on this?

It's an odd piece - maybe even a costume from a later period. But the zipper is very very old, and a side zip. I have other pieces from this period that have zippers too. But the clincher is that the piece has a dropped waist and very old hooks on the interior of the belt. The belt doesn't ride on the waist, it actually rides on the hips and the buttons were swapped out later. So, that's my guess. ;)

Not just 20s but EARLY 20s at that. I only say that it isn't any earlier than that because I don't know any better, but it is very end of WW1 - early 20s in style.
Sorry I can't get the pics up quick as we don't have internet at home, so it might take a while, but they'll get here eventually. If anyone is interested in this, it's you guys! lol

That is a beautiful suit, & with cool blue & white pinstripes...I wish I got ahold of that suit before a seamstress did.
&, you were right, it did used to be a man's suit. During the war, because they were conserving everything & only making things for the war, it was very common for a taylor or seamstress, or even an able woman at home, would take in a man's suit to make a woman's suit.
I just purchased a suit that's nearly identical to the one Betty posted. Forgive the hanger pics - worn, the shape is pretty much the same as the one above. I couldn't get a good shot of me wearing it -- all my self-timer photos came out way too dark.

I couldn't find anything with a similar cut on ebay or vintage clothing sites, so I was excited to find the previous one. I also searched for the thread about it, but found nothing.
Here's the info I found on J.B. Simpson -- custom-fit suit manufacturer from Chicago. Considering that the label inside says it's for a Mr. L. Brumfield, I suspect this one started out as a man's suit... what do you guys think?

According to this site which shows how to date the label, it was made between 1939 and 1949:

One vintage suit jacket, coming up. :) Unfortunately, I don't have the matching skirt. I found the jacket at Goodwill, motheaten, but too gorgeous to pass up, especially at the measly price they'd put on it. (Given that this store is given to pricing things stratospherically, I can only conclude that they didn't know what they had on their hands.) I dug through the skirt racks in hopes of finding the matching skirt, but alas, it wasn't there.
Rough estimate of date is late 1940s. It's fully lined, in a peach-colored, pebbly crepe-like fabric. I love the petal detail on the sides - the way the petals are worked into the darts is amazing.

Oh, gosh thanks! My tie is a "Target special!" I adore ties! And this one had a pattern I just couldn't live without! I will see about taking a picture of the pattern - I looove it!
And the stockings...well here's the secret...they are actually cotton tube socks from Sock Dreams!! I wear them in the winter - 'cause it gets chilly here and they are oh so comfy and cozy!! They are over-the-knee style. The only thing is they don't fit into a standard garter clip - so you have to get a heavy clasp style or knee garters (but they do stay up rather well just by them selves!)

I love Sock Dreams! I've got terrible legs for getting OTKs to stay up, though. I do love the Diamond Knit knee socks (well-shrunk, with a band of elastic to hold them up), and the Super Basics actually *do* hold up very well on me, and are plenty long enough to hook to a garter belt for more security. Which reminds me, I need to go order some grey and cream ones...

The pants suit picture made me think of a occurrence I read about in one of my fashion history books a couple days ago. In the sixties a woman wearing a pants suit was told by the host at an upscale restaurant that he would not seat her in the outfit she was wearing. So she removed her pants and was seated that way - despite the fact that the jacket to her suit barely concealed her undergarments. I guess wearing a suit still isn't good enough sometimes!!

Was that the 40s suits that were blue with a red pinstripe? Man's and a woman's?
We saw it, the BF and I. Too big for him and a smidge too tight for me, besides which I seem to recall the BIN price was $1200. Even if they had fit, the price wasn't right. :)
They were quite 'American' looking in cut, both single breasted. We both prefer English clothes personally but it was interesting to think of that couple walking around in their matching suits. Generally the BF and I try to avoid that! lol

I haven't read every post but I cannot stand the women's pants suit. It just seems bland to me. Call me old fashioned but men should dress like men and women should dress like women.
Yeah, that is quite old fashioned. :) Here's a great thread about girls in guy's garb (http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?t=5905) that might change your mind.
Edit: I just saw this awesome Jean Paul Gaultier suit on Dita von Teese, I think it's very vintage inspired, so I wanted to share:

I'd agree with many women's pant suits being bland. I'd say it's a general sign of a lack of quality, originality and attention to details. My wife, until her recent illness, wore suits to work 4 days a week. She had a hard time finding stuff she really liked since most of it was boring, boxy and bland. As much as she spends on pants suits, Hillary Clinton's wardrobe doesn't really do much for her. Don't get me wrong, I LIKE women in pants. I would love to see more optiona and details brought into them. Maybe my wife's experience is colored by the still-limited market for plus-size women, but that's just my 2-cents.

I'll agree with that. I don't like the boxy pantsuit, but I think a more updated pantsuit (or rather, vintage-inspired pantsuit) could look very nice.

I too think that modern pant suits leave a great deal to be desired. Though, I think that they could be done well. Personally, the only reason I even own any pant suits is because I do feel that in today's society one can be looked upon as being impractical for wearing a skirt - so in my desperation to find a job out of college I made sure I had a pants suit ready for interviews where I thought this might be the case. In most cases though I do much prefer a skirt!

Feraud, did you notice the ladies sizes got slimmer as the years progressed? In general I notice most sizes appear to correspond to modern sizes. There doesn't appear to be a lack of larger sized outfits.
Many outfits are available in specific "stout" sizes.
Comments about size may have little to do with the actual number of people who wore larger sizes..
Mrs. Merl
12-26-2008, 08:25 AM
Now I really am confused. Are you speaking of the cut of the garments or the actual sizing availability of the products? I would think that size availability would be fairly wide - because people have and always will come in all sizes...but maybe this is not what you are referring to at all.
Feraud
12-26-2008, 08:28 AM
I am referring to the sizes noted in the catalogs.

Here is my suit. Neither vintage, nor a good picture. But I thought I would post it just the same. As I do really like my suit - cause it is actually wool, fully lined and is a decent cut - vintage-esque! Hard to find these days with women's suits being so shoddy! Oh plus, I got it for a real bargain!

I purchased a 1940's repro suit (http://www.heydayonline.co.uk/default/womens-clothing/ladies-suits/suit-navy-viscose.html)from Heyday! I really like it. The sizing goes up to 22 & best of all it's a reasonably light weight fabric (which is great for the Australian climate).

A picture of *probably* my favourite suit - a hard choice as I really love a good suit! It's a mid 1930s lightweight nubbly tweed in oatmeal with brown and orange flecks, fastening with a double link button, which is a rare beast, even in womens vintage. It is so light and comfortable to wear. I'm wearing it at the fiftith anniversary meet of the Pre-1940 Triumph Car Club last year. The cream car behind me is my partners. The dog is borrowed, and was not very well behaved!

Miss Sis,- you really do look like a sewing pattern illustration! And I have to concur that it is indeed a very fine suit! (and hat, and shoes, and bag, and scarf!)
I really (x 100) want a suit like that- or maybe something with a half belt instead (don’t want to sound too greedy!), but like I said before, I’m an awkward shape and add that problem to the scarcity of the suits in the first place…. Well, let’s just say, finding one looks doubtful for old monkey arms here! I think I'll have to try and make one:rolleyes:

Thanks everyone! I have quite a number of suits, 40s as well as 30s (by far my preference), as they are really my favourite thing to wear after sportswear/casualwear separates.
Miss T, I will have to photograph a few more suits, espacially the 30s ones - I have a half belt back white linen jacket that goes with a stray skirt of the same linen, thus making a suit. :)

The lapels are wide and you don't see the linked buttons much during the 40s, so I'd say late 30s, and with the pleated skirt I'd say pre clothes rationing too, so no later than 41.
I'd need a closer look to be any more accurate!

I am obsessed with suit patterns, even though I'm a stay-at-home mum with no place to wear them. Judging from the patterns in my collection, I'd say 41-42. However, clothing rationing didn't start in the US until 43. My late 30's suit patterns all have either a circle skirt or gored skirt with a large flare. The length of the jacket suggests post-war, but the length of the skirt suggests war time but these both could be a matter of how they fit your figure. How's that for a non-answer? :D
Miss Sis
05-27-2012, 08:41 AM
It wasn't unusual to see pleated skirts on pre-rationed British suits. I have magazine ads for Gorray pleated skirts in 1941, so that's just before clothes rationing came in in Britain. British fashion, whilst acknowledging American fashions, was sometimes quite different, especially in an area as conservative as a suit or 'tailormade' as they were more often refered to.
Padding in the shoulder would be another indication. The late 30s/early 40s ones didn't have that much padding compared to later in the War. I recenty sold what was probably a just Post-War/Pre-New Look dress that had shoulder pads that would put a Gridiron player to shame!
