Single malt. Like drinking smoke, and I love it.

PS. I came up with a drink I call a running squirt.

New year's Eve, 1968, I polished off about 2/3rds of a bottle of champagne, then started drinking Lophraig. OMG. What a hangover on New Years's Day.
But thank God it didn't put me off Scotch forever.
Lopgraig is truly . . . unusual . . . stuff. Ths flavor of Scotch comes from the qualities of the peat used to make it. I'd love to get a whiff of the peat in the district where Lophgaig is made.
Not for the faint of heart.

Then you need to look for it. It is exactly what it sounds like - the whisky is finished in cask that is 1/4 the size of a usual cask. This intensifies the effects of the wood. As Laphroaig is in ex-bourbon casks, this lends the whisky a suble vanilla sweetness.

Laphroaig is my favorite scotch! My wife likens it to "dead bodies in a burnt peat bog". lol

I've got a botle open at the moment. It is my favourite scotch.
A friend of mine described it as sucking the sweat out of a peat cutter's boots.
So your wife is not alone in her distaste for this particular drop.

Laphroaig is without doubt my favorite drink, of any type. I haven't tried the quarter cask, but I plan to when I get the chance.
My wife can't stand it, and all but a couple of my friends can't stand it either, so it's usually the whole bottle to myself.

I would not turn down a Laphroaig if offered but spending my own money I tend to go for two other Islay heavyweights: Caol Ila and Lagavulin.

I've so far only met one single malt I don't like and this is it. Kinda tastes like the runoff that's left after a house fire is extinguished (don't ask how I know).

Yes, it is a rather exciting drink.
Ardbeg is also nice if you like the Smoky- not so intense.
I've heard Ardbeg referred to as "Laphroaig Lite" but I think that's just mean,
Ardbeg is a good drop in its own right.
I'm also guilty of being a Laphroaig Liker.
Lagavulin too.

Really? To me, Ardbeg seemed to be more "smoke" while the Laphroaig had more flavors in it. Weird.

I agree. Ardbeg is pure peat. I find Caol Ila to be lighter than Ardbeg, Laphroaig and Lagavulin.

Laphroaig has been my Scotch of choice since 1964. All other makes are naught but shadows by comparison. Woe unto them who disdain the dusky delights of Islay's finest and most noble example of the distillers' art; they shall be cast into the pit of pusillanimousness where dwell the drinkers of decaf late with skim milk.

Can't stand it. I like most single malts that I've tried but I have never tasted an Islay that made me want a second sip. I never felt I was enjoying it so much as enduring it.*yucky*

Beautifully said, Sir, beautifully said.
The finest stuff to leave Islay's shores will always find a welcome harbour in my liquor cabinet.

...decaf late with skim milk.
A decaf late with skim milk is also known as a Why Bother in some parts of Australia. I've even sen it written up that way on a menu.

The decaf/skim combo was usually abbreviated to 'Why Bother' in the coffee shop I worked in in University here too... It would be added like a tag to whatever was ordered - "Tall, why bother, Cappo"...

I'm partial to most of the Islay drams I've tried. I also like Highland Park quite a bit.
Oh, who am I kidding - I like the majority of Single Malts. :)

I drink a fair whack of it over the colder months (along with one or two other Islays). And then I tend towards Speysides over summer when I hanker for a malt.

You bet, the Islays are among my favorites. And Laphroaig is one of the best. It just keeps growing on you. BUt, it is more of a winter libation.

Just picked up a bottle of Caol Ila today and am looking forward to it. I too prefer this and the Lagavulin.
But to reiterate another comment in this thread, they get more attention from me in cold weather. (I visit the Bourbons through the summer)lol

The smokey/peaty ones are a favourite, Ledaig is one that's worth having a nip of.
I seem to recall Johnny Walker Gold is quite smoky - can anyone confirm this?

Nick, you are correct. Nothing quite like it. The young lady at the booth distributing Laphroaig at the Cigar Aficionado dinner thinks I'm hitting on her every year in Las Vegas.:eusa_doh: :eusa_doh:

I admit to liking it without buying it often. "The color of coal oil and taste to match." But, it has a character like no other. I suppose it's like Coen Brothers movies: you either like them or hate them.

Quite so, I've only had one Scotch that may have border on too smokey! I had in the Royal Mile Whiskies in Edinburgh. Princess Anne or something, interesting name that.

I particularly enjoy Laphroaig while sitting at the sushi bar. I take a sip to refresh my palate occasionally. Sake is wonderful within a course. Between courses, a bit of Laphroaig tastes wonderful. I think it is the iodine quality of Laphroaig that makes it so wonderful in that context. No other Scotch works quite so well. Best, Sam

Like sucking the rain out of a tree stump after a lightning storm. Nothing like it on earth, this is what made me a whiskey drinker.
Though my nightly tipple is Finlaggans, a little milder and about half the price. It's actually really good stuff. See for yourself.
Anyone actually it with a splash of water? I've got friends who swear by this. Totally ruins the taste for me.

Yes, almost always. But just a tiny splash, if it's even a little too much it will dilute the flavour. I won't have it on the rocks, though. The cold dulls the tastebuds.
