Damn I wish someone made those bras in smaller sizes - you'd think they'd be popular with smaller busted ladies being non-wired. Modern bras are too rounded and I'm not always up for the full take-an-eye-out-with-those-babies look! It's be really great to find something in between the two extremes like that.
Hear, hear. I'm not amply endowed, to say the least, and the best bra I have ever owned is a 1960s era lightly-padded Playtex cross-your-heart. Has just the right stretch, just the right fit, and just the right shape. It's *similar* to the CYH models available today, and similar to the Doreen shown above, but there's something about the modern fabric that just isn't as comfortable. Anyone who could put out a bra like that today in an A cup would have my business for life.

Hanes makes a really nice wireless padded bra (in a range of sizes) that gives the same shape as the Doreen bra pictured. I bought one about 2 weeks ago at Wal-Mart for $9+ change, and it is the most comfortable bra that I own. I can't stop marvelling at how nice it feels on (it doesn't even feel like I am wearing a bra) and what a difference no underwire makes in comfort. My underwire bras always ride up on me and this one stays nicely in place and the straps don't fall down either (another problem I have with most bras). After a lifetime of uncomfortable bras, I'm so happy to find one that actually fits me. The little adjuster buckles on the straps are also in the front, which is very convenient for adjusting your bra while it is on instead of having to take it off to adjust it. It gives the lift and seperate 40s silhouette, instead of the squashed and rounded underwire look. I love this bra, I need to find more in my size in the other colors (Wal-Mart only had white in my size - 38C).

I found the bra on the Hanes website:

They don't have it in a 30C, but I don't know if tht means they don't carry it, or if they just don't have it in stock. I'm trying to find it in black myself.

It looks a lot like a lot of shapers that are on the market. Most of these offer light smoothing but only offer light control and therefore kindof lack in the shaping area.
Let us know if you try it. I really don't like my Rago corselette much.

I tried the Rago corselette in the lacy fabric and if felt okay for some light shaping, but not great support for the bust.

Maybe you need a smaller "band" size say a 32 with a larger cup size? I've never found anything like that to fit me, and I'd love to have one!

I thought that 34 was the smallest width in the Rago though, that's why i didn't try it smaller, but the Charnos I just bought from figleaves is in 32 width.

I recently purchased Rago 6109 and I love it. Very comfortable, no binding at the legs, strong enough to knock a couple inches of my measurements. Also, the stock photo shows this model as not having garters but mine do, which is an added plus.

I just bought the Rago 6209 High Waist panty girdle, I love it except I seem to get this "bubble" of chub between my bra and the girdle. Does anyone else get this? How do you combat this? I'm a chubby girl, but this seems to even everything out except that one spot. I can't buy an all in one because they don't make the cup sizes big enough, any suggestions?

It seems like something like that would leave a definite and unattractive line across your bum that would be visible under slim clothing.

Nope, none that I know of. I had the high waisted Lacette girdle and I sold it. Way too hard to get in and out of, very uncomfortable with the boning, and yes, the "chub bubble". If you can't wear an all-in-one, instead try combining a regular panty girdle or open-bottom girdle with a longline bra. Longlines are often available in very large cup sizes, and this kind of combination will give you nice, all-over shaping, as well as prevent the girdle roll usually experienced with an OB girdle.

If you can go up in width and down in cupsize (I am never the same in width and cupsize in different brands, some I am DD, others D and so on) then here is one from figleaves.

you can pull this one as high as you want, so you get shaped from your bra to the top of your thighs.

But I feel a little bit lost now and don't know what to do... my back is really large but flat -> full coverage makes it appear even larger, mini coverage shows of how large it is:mad:
I thought a shaping panty like I wanted it(which doesn't seem to exist) would help me,my hips are shaped strange. They a very round and curve inward at a point of my hips where my very prominent pelvic bones are - there is basically no flesh, just skin. I love my body as it is, but with tight clothes on it's like you put a spotlight on this part.
Any other ideas how I can smooth it out?

So you want something that will smooth and shape the outside of your hips, without flattening your bum?
If I'm understanding this correctly, there may be a few things to help you. You might want to try panties with a padded rear to even things out a little bit. If you're large down there, why not flaunt it and show some curves? There are also padded shapers that have padding on the bum AND the hips!
Fredericks of Hollywood carries items like this, with removable pads!

http://www.fredericks.com/images/5/51371_86_itm_a_6700.jpg
Or you can try shaping panties that don't cover the bum. They're hard to explain, but they're like a panty girdle, so that might help shape your hips, but they have cut outs over the butt cheeks to help lift and not flatten. I don't think I can post a photo of that here, but Cameo Intimates makes a lovely one!

Dahrling, I have the Charnos hourglass corselette too, and I had to go down a band size in order to not get excess fabric floating around the waist. I love the blush colour and the balconette bra cups are genius! Charnos is very good value for money imo.
For some reason I always assumed that those padded panties were targeted at cross-dressers. I'd love to hear more about what effect they have on a female body!

I've been looking for an alternative to my Rago garter belt and waist cincher and came across the Lady Marlene X-Slip at girdlebound.
http://www.girdlebound.com/store/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=GVG&Product_Code=lm870&Category_Code=OBG
My garter belt gives me some waist squishing and my waist cincher makes some of my clothes too big, so this looked pretty promising. I don't want a regular OBG, as I'm not looking to lose any inches from my hips.
Do any of you ladies have this? And how did you go with sizing and is it comfy? I'm a 26 inch waist, so I'm normally a small, but not sure how this runs to size.

I have an older Victoria's Secret version of this and I LOVE IT! It doesn't slide around like a regular garter belt and keeps everything in place, it provides light smoothing of the tummy, hips and bum, but it's not constricting and doesn't take inches off the hips. It's very comfortable and I wear mine about half the time I wear stockings. No shaping, just some smoothing.
Sorry I can't help on size, since mine is a different brand the sizing might not run the same. I have the VS size M and have a 26.5" waist and 37" hips. After losing more weight, I could definitely use a size smaller now. Why not order it in a couple different sizes and return the one you don't want?
I've been wanting to get one of these in white for a long time. Mine is in black and I want one I can wear under everything!

For those considering the Doreen--you may need to go up one back size when you order. Its material is quite a bit more firm than the contemporary stretchier underwires I'm used to, which I should have taken into account. Fortunately I've got some back extenders on hand for just such an emergency. Love it!
Has anyone tried the Exquisite Form "Famous 502"? I'm thinking of making that my next adventure in online bra ordering, and I'm guessing it's of a similarly firm, less-stretchy nature, right?

I'm wearing my Lady Marlene x slip today and I'm loving it! KittyT, the small fits me perfectly, though, it's decided to settle itself at my waist, rather than hips, which I prefer anyway (and is a better length for my stockings). The garter hooks have ribbon on both sides, so there's none of that ouchy, stick into the back of your thighs when sitting thing happening and whilst it's not firm a girdle, it's staying put. I haven't tried it with seamed stockings yet, so I'm not sure if it will give me seam wiggle, but I've only ever worn 4 straps, so I should be ok.
Definately recommend it!

Yup, I'm that shape too! I've always been really skinny and I thought that when I put on weight the 'gaps' would fill in, but alas no - I am just a bigger version of the same shape! Generally, I work around this by choosing tighter clothes in heavier fabrics that hold some shape by themselves - stretch fabrics are a major no-no!

I would say, find one that doesn't go too far down, it is the walking motion that makes it roll up. Also one that is really boney should be good as well.

A girdle with garters is made to wear with stockings; it's going to ride up without them holding down. I've never worn a waistcincher, though, so I can't offer any advice on that one.

My Rago cincher rolls up, but I have another cincher from a different brand that doesn't. The reason the Rago rolls is because the boning doesn't go all the way to the hem. There really is no fix for it, since it doesn't have garters for stockings.

My Rago cincher rolls up, but I have another cincher from a different brand that doesn't. The reason the Rago rolls is because the boning doesn't go all the way to the hem. There really is no fix for it, since it doesn't have garters for stockings.
I suppose I could add some boning lower down.
Some of the Rago cinchers do have garters.
My rago waist cincher has detachable garters. Thanks ladies:)

From the sites I use, the cincher(21) has garters, the waist nipper (821)does not. They look very similar, but the waist nipper is the stronger garments.

I did a corserty course & this looks like a Victorian Corset (style). The ones I make have the 'round' front that go over the breasts & they have long metal fastenings up the front (which can be substituted with hooks & eyes) & a lace up back.
From the pic that's what it looks like to me anyway
Not being familiar with What Katie Did I don't know what their styles are so I can't help with that I'm afraid
As for this girdle rolling up thing, I just bought myself a couple, does this happen with stockings or not? I only bought them so I could wear stockings. I guess the stockings will stop it from rolling(?)

just a report on my new Rago cincher - it is *fabulous*. due to being-on-vacation puffiness, my waist was at about 34 inches... my cinch brought it down to thirty!!! it's not too uncomfortable, even after a full day of wear involving dancing! i am such a happy customer! fyi, i bought a Size 30 cincher.

heck if i know! lol my hips are pretty small (compared to my waist normally) so it probably goes there. i wear those shaper old-lady underwear with it. the top of the cincher comes up to my bra, and the bottom of it comes down over the undies. it's pretty smooth for me - no lines, i think because the cincher isn't extremely tight on my hips as it is.

Yeah, I could imagine that it would bulge like that on me too, the model there doesn't look like she has much on her that needs cinching. ;) But good to hear that it can actually bring down the waist by a few inches, I thought it was somewhat like the Rago corselettes, mostly for smoothing out.

Then either your shoes don't fit correctly, or you should just get heel grips to put in the back so your feet don't slide.

I don't know about y'all, but if I get shoes that feel right without stockings, they're probably not going to fit right with stockings; and vice versa. Stockings don't change the size of the foot much, but they have a huge impact on how my feet feel in the shoe.

If I'm buying heels, I always try them on with stockings because that's almost always how I'll wear them. Also, I just can't understand wearing heels without stockings - it feels disgusting AND leaves a ton of bacteria living in your shoes.
In any case, a good pair of heel grips easily remedies this issue.

Yes, well you should know that the reason this matters is because the bacteria in perspiration loves to eat the proteins in leather, especially when it is thriving in a warm, damp environment. Over time, perspiration inside your [leather] shoes can significantly damage them.

It may depend on the person, but I find that when I wear stockings, I'm still getting sweaty shoes, but much less so than without, and that a lot of the sweat ends up in the stockings. Some of the sweat does stick to the nylons.

I use charcoal inserts in all my shoes. They're great for this particular sweaty foot problem. Once they get grubby and seem to not do their job anymore, I just swap 'em out for new ones. For peep-toe shoes, I just trim the 'toe-end" of the insert a bit shorter so it's not visible.
I use them regardless of whether I happen to be wearing stockings or not, as it seems to help cut down on that 'swampy" feeling. ick.

The shoes fit perfectly without stockings. If I had got the smaller size they would have been too small. My feet come between sizes.
Heel grips don't work as the problem is my feet slidding forwards, a common problem with peep toes I believe. I must be lucky as my feet dont sweat in any shoes except trainers and wellingtons.
I solved the problem by putting insoles and party feet in the shoes and sucessfully wore them with stockings:)

This isn't tecnically true, shoes are designed to absorb nearly quater a pint of sweat each wear! gross! but the insole board is often treated with an anti fungal, so the bacteria doesn't hoard in there! that's why you should never wear your shoes 2 days running...:) let them rest and they'll live forever!

It’s a Shapley Figures one. I got 2 of them from Ebay for 4 quid each. When I tried it on yesterday I wasn’t sure, I was having a horrid day in general so everything was awful, but today I decided what the heck and threw it on. I can now wear a dress I got last week which looked rather awful due to my massive hips, and now it fits absolutely beautifully. The girdle give me a smooth shape too, no one will ever guess I have squidgy bits! Hurrah for girdles!
I will have to measure the inch difference I think. That’s all a girl needs to feel good about herself!

Hello :)
I was wondering about buying a girdle... I've been using suspender belts and stockings for a couple of years but recently I put on a bit of weight and, while it doesn't usually bother me, certain dresses show my little round belly :P
Any of you that wear girdles, are they comfy? I don't want to feel too thight!
Also, where do you buy them? I have some items from Stockings HQ, an English online shop, but maybe you could recommend another website? (I moved to Spain so I can only buy vintage style clothes/items online or go shopping when I visit London).
Thanks to all :)

It was from Rose Lingerie on Ebay yep!! It's absolutely amazing. My waist is around 28, and the girdle I got is 27-28. It didn't have a hip measurement, but my hips are rather large in comparison to my waist and it slims them down an awful lot.
And I find it quite comfortable. Makes me feel ultra feminine. I just need to figure out the underwear thing with it now :eusa_doh:

I've been quite happy with my cinchers for a while, they do the perfect job under a full skirted dress. However, they aren't quite right under a wiggle dress. What is best under a wiggle dress? Will an open bottom girdle show a line where it ends? Would I do better with a long leg girdle? Do the high waisted Ragos come up as high as their cincher? The cincher comes right to my bra band, so there's no lump between the bra and cincher. Will I need a long line bra with the girdle?

You have a few options:
1. A corselette is the best option
2. A regular, OB girdle combined with a long line bra. They will overlap at your waist so any funny lines should be hidden by the belt that you're wearing.
3. The Rago, high-waisted OB girdle, which should come up to your bra band.
A regular, OB girdle may show a little under a wiggle dress - it just depends on how the girdle fits you. You will definitely get little bumps where the garters are. In any case, I wouldn't worry about it too much, as it's definitely period-correct :)

It sounds like the high waisted OB girdle is my best bet. I wear a 36G and have yet to find a long line bra or corselette (is that the same as "body briefer") in my size.
Kami,
The problem I have with long leg girdles is that (and maybe its just me) that my thighs are full. I've always just had thick ones! But long legs are good for an hour or two, the leg starts to roll up on me and its painful because of the rubber grippers.
I have an old Smoothie All In One that I bought in college that I love love love. I love that the back is smooth to the waist to the hips to the legs. But I can really only wear it once in a while because of the leg roll problem, then you get that bulge on the leg.
What about an OB All In One to wear under the wiggle? Is the wiggle dress lined or will you wear a slip?

Since this board has mostly to do with Golden Era undies and compressional stuff....Waist training is -generally- not what most of us are after when we wear anything.
It's the temporary 'this makes my dress fit or look smoother' that was fundamental to the 30's. 40's etc...

None of my usual sites have them. The closest I came was if I went up a band size and down a cup size. The actual cup would be the same, but would the torso part not tighten me up if it was a size too big? I found one in a cup size too small, but since I sometimes overflow in my size if it's a different style cup, I don't think I could try a smaller cup.

Have you tried one of the high waist shapers? That's what I do. I'm 34ff and I couldn't find an all-in-one. I wear a high waist one, and it comes all the way up and I just tuck it under the band on my bra. Not sure if this works because I'm short, but you might try it.

Girdles are sized by waist measurement - not what you want your waist to be, but the actual measurement of the smallest part of your waist. If you have a 28" waist, you will wear a size 28 girdle. If you have hips that are large for your waist size (usually more than 10" above your waist measurement), you may have to go up a size.
For Rago girdles, there is a size chart and info on their website.
For body briefers and corselettes, sizing is done by bra size.

Because they have built in cups and it's important to make sure that fits They're stretchy, so even if your hips are large, you'll get some stretching to accommodate that. That said, some gals find that corselettes don't work or them if they have larger hips.

If you want to try one on for fun, you should do so at a department store. My 15 y.o. does so occasionally. They arent corsets per say, but I guess more of a bustier type deal.
I was wondering how one determines what size slip (full) you buy? Is it by actual bust measurement? Bra size? Any help appreciated.

All my vintage slips are marked by bust size in inches (over the bust) and all the modern ones are by modern sizing (10, 12 etc) which usually also has a corresponding measurement in inches (34", 36"), although when I say modern, they are probably from the 80s and sizing was a bit different even then!
Most slips are measured over the bust, as far as I know.

Worth keeping in mind too that you'll have a lot more give with vintage nylon slips than you will with vintage cotton slips -- with the latter, iI find it's a good idea to go a size up over your bust size to compensate for any shrinkage.
I wear a 36 bra, but I always buy size 38 slips, and I find that avoids any kind of problems with binding around the chest -- if a slip is too tight, you won't be long for noticing it, especially when the side seam pops on a deep breath.
Some modern full slips are also marked according to length of the skirt, measured from the waistline -- so, a 38-26 would be a 38 bust and a 26 inch skirt, which would be a good basic length for most vintage dresses.

They don't really hurt, but are a bit uncomfortable if it's tight but as you keep wearing it it'll start to feel better. Don't go tighter than you can handle, you look like a petite girl anyway so I doubt you'd want it tight anyway.

Always err on the side of excess when comfort is at stake -- you can always take it in if it's too loose, but it's very difficult to let it out if it's too tight. I'd suggest starting with a 44, and doing a bit of trial and error on either side of that to find precisely what works for you. Nylon slips will stretch a bit, but you don't want to depend too much on that.

I know some of you have mentioned that wearing corsets in this community isn't so much for the waist training as for the era appropriateness, but I have a question. I am thinking of having a corset made to train my ribs more than my waist. After having two children my bust has shrunk (considerably) and my rib cage has expanded. I'm finding it quite difficult to find tops that fit and get quite frustrated that if things fit my bust they won't fit my ribs. Has anyone had experience with this problem or solution??

Thanks LizzieMaine, I appreciate the info. I'll see how a 44 does and you are right, I could always take it in if need be now that the old 1938 Singer is back in action at our house :)
I shouldn't tell you this (I'm the same size: 44) but I found some full slips in our size on eBay... Don't bid on the one I want! lol

Take in the bust... fit the largest part of you.
It sounds as though all you will get from trying to reduce your ribcage is lack of oxygen. And then you will be yawning through whatever vintage event you are trying to look fabulous at, and people will think you're bored... I see a whole chain of bad reaction here...
Ladies in the Victorian era sometimes had ribs removed (without anesthetic, how butch is that) to make there waists smaller, but it is so unnatural.
People get older, they grow, they change, they sometimes have to let the tiny clothes go and get their new size. Believe me, I have resisted this reality for a long time...

I could, but that is a lot of work when you consider the size of my wardrobe (umm... extensive). I thought it might present a slightly less invasive option than having the boobs done to match too. ;) The problem is that the rest of me is quite small,(about an Aus 8) then the ribs kick in. I'm actually much smaller than before I had the children, so it can be quite confusing.
I thought that I'd wear it during the day just hanging out at home, that way should I feel the need for a lie down, I could accommodate that too, rather than fainting into the arms of some chap whilst out on the town. :)

Fainting is so 19th century. Not Golden Era at all.
It is odd how one's body suddenly does these unexpected changes - I am experiencing gravity now...

Now I am thoroughly confused :)
I wear a 38DD and my bust measures 44 inches. Should I get a 38 or a 44 or something in between? I am looking at vintage slips.
Your bra size is measured under your bust around your ribs. You need the measurement over the bust or it isn't going to fit.

That is NOT true. It's one of many, many ridiculous corset myths. Certain brief periods in the 19th century made tight-lacing ultra-fashionable, but the vast majority of women never went that far. In the 19th century, corsets were for support and shaping, and to that end they were amazingly comfortable.

A long-time tight-lacer once told me that after stopping it, after she'd corseted down to I think it was 18 inches on a natural waist of 28 or so, her bottom most rib on both sides became 'loose'. She said it would move considerably if she was hugged or something, and that it was a really odd sensation! I don't know whether it later 're-set' or whatever though.

No, the cup size has to do with the difference in total bust measurement vs the underbust/band measurement, not just the total bust measurement. Even if her bust is 2" bigger than yours, she would wear a smaller cup size if the difference between her total measurement and underbust measurement is less than it is for you.

To be honest, after losing so much weight this past year i had NO idea what size bra I wear. I recently went to Victoria's Secret and was measured and in their bras I wear a 38DD. I remeasured my actual bust this morning (ebaying slips hahaha) and it is now a 42, not a 44 (which explains the need for hooking my bra tighter in the last month or so).
I have a big rib cage too, I don't think it is heredity, I think it is from being super morbidly obese almost all of my life.
Getting properly fitted for a bra was the best thing I ever did for my figure. Especially now that gravity has fully taken control of the girls.

Also, there's the 'volume' of the breasts that makes a difference. My friend and I wear the same band size and the same bust size around but we are 4 cup sizes different! She just has ... more in all directions except forward!

Weird! I know the bottom ribs are "floating," not attached to the sternum, which makes tight-lacing more possible. I guess hers just loosened even more!

Yeah its kind of annoying to have to keep adjusting myself all the time with those push up bras... pluss there is soo much padding in them i can wash a car with it! LOL

I usually wear Vanity Fair style 75-266. It's a nice full-coverage bra with wide, comfortable shoulder straps. The entire cup has a very, very thin, light padding and the overall effect is a nice, smooth, seamless figure. Good for wearing under tshirts and thin blouses that show seam lines. They run about $30 and Vanity Fair frequently has specials at department stores like Buy 2 Get One Free.

After spending most of yesterday in a corset, I think I may have changed my mind. My back did not thank me for it, and it was almost always on my mind distracting me from the task at hand. Perhaps they are like getting braces, hurt like hell for a while then you get used to it. It probably wasn't a good idea to tackle my first tight lacing for work!

A well made corset should not cause any back pain, and really should be something you don't notice throughout your day. I would recommend getting one made for you, since all the curves have to be in exactly the right place for a correct fit. Also, if you are just starting to cinch it's a good idea to work up gradually so that you can adjust to it. Be sure that when you do cinch to keep the gap parallel, allowing the center back bones to provide back support. Depending on the style of corset you are looking for, I would recommend Lavender's Green since all of their things are custom made.

Thank you! It was really more of a costume corset, so there was no custom fitting involved. ( I was being model for the day) It is good to know that they aren't meant to feel that way. I'll take you up on your suggestion and visit a specialist maker to see what they can do for me. Much appreciated. :)

Yes, that's the way to do it! And I ditto all that Rachael said. Corsets really must be personalized to fit well. Think of how many bra sizes there are, and a corset covers a whole lot more! A new corset should be broken in gradually. And it is definitely a good idea to work up to the cinching. A corset doesn't have to change any measurement - sometimes a Victorian corset will even add to the waistline of a slender person - but it does mold the body and redistribute things slightly. Let your body get used to it before you start tightening things. Good luck and have fun with it!

Ok, I noticed we probably live in the same state or close. Since I don't have contact rights yet, feel free to contact me directly. But this is what I know about corsets and girdles. (I have given vintage fashion lectures on foundation garments, so I have had to pay attention!) Anyway, the way to pick the foundation garment is by the era you are trying to acheive. The first girdle you showed was a 30s open bottom girdle. They are my favorite. They give you the right vintage line. The others are more contemporary, which is fine if your clothes or goals are more contemporary. (i.e you just want to look smoother). Think about how dead on the fashion looks in Mad men. They actually wear foundation garments styled from the period. I have bought girdles from a place on line called "Girdlebound." For open bottom 30s style and 50s style. They have a wonderful selection and have selections by the smoothing effects required (I.e extra binding etc.). I also have a friend who makes wonderful period custom corsets. She is amazing. Her business is called Dark Garden. They specialize in period corsets (Victorian, edwardian, regency) and fetish and bridal. Corsets are actually comfortable and supportive of your back if made right. (I don't get a cut, I really think these people do a good job.) I have also bought a girdle from old lady catalogs. While Girdlebound is for hipsters, they buy them from the same companies as the little old lady catalogs. Happy girdling.

Thanks very much for all the info. :) Right now I just need it to smooth my hips and waist in (the dress is a bit snug :( ), but the era that I like the best is the 50's hourglass. I am as far from the 20's columnar silhouette as you can get (43-34-43) and I like big skirts (with an occasion foray into pencil skirts when I can flatten my stomach out enough). :D So for my vintage wear would I get the (8)21? Girdlebound was actually one of the sites I looked at.

Ok if that one is the the girdle on the right, the girdle without the garters, then that might be the one you want. If you are basically smoothing hips and waist. It works best if you are doing a lose skirt. If you are doing clingy 30s you need the open bottom one. If you have my particular figure problem -chubby thighs then the 30s one or the one with the legs is more my ticket (although the one with the legs has its open particular challenge at times with 30s evening gown). I could not wear the one on the right because those healthy peasant thighs of mine would ruin the line in 30s and 40s.
A girdle makes you stand up straight and feel awfully girly with just the right amount of sashay that says "follow me boys."

Has anyone dealt with the 6209?
I wear the 6209 regularly -- it is firm control as advertised, holds everything in like it's supposed to, and the boning in the waist ensures there won't be any rollover or slipdown. The only complaint I have with it is that the elastic around the leg openings isn't as durable as it ought to be -- after a couple years of wear it tends to get stretched out. But as far as figure-shaping goes, I like what it does for me very much -- my hips aren't a problem so much as my waist is, and the 6209 makes short work of that. Well worth the investment, I think.

Betty appeared to be wearing a Rago Shapette of some kind in the opening scene of episode 6--couldn't tell if it was 1359 or 679, but I did make out the "contour bands." Too bad they didn't show much of Joan's underpinnings before she put on that slip--now there's a marvel of engineering I'd love to see in greater detail.

In theory I like the idea of Spanx, but they're expensive and ugly and I just can't bring myself to wear them. Assets work just as well as Spanx and are less expensive. In my view, Spanx are for the times when you need a little help, but don't need a girdle. I wear my Spanx with jeans and a t shirt and really does the trick. They eliminate the dreaded muffin top.

Agreed....modern shapers in general are not going to do a lot for vintage clothes in terms of the proper lines.
BUT.....some of us like some smoothing with modern stuff or even loosely fitting things...and shapewear does a good job at that..
These are two new Spanx products I hadn't tried.I tried Assets and didn't get the same fit as from the Spanx and they tore much sooner. These two items are supposed to be silkier and have more slip. I bought the all the way up panty hose because I anticipate wearing more trousers this fall/winter with sweaters and I hate the thigh bulge I get from other shapers even the original spanx, guess my thighs are just fleshier and that tiny pudge that happens over top. [huh] Now the Assets tights are pretty great! I love them.
Kitty, you are right there are very limited options when it comes to modern shape wear and garters.
Miss Neecerie, what you said reminds me a lot of a thread over in the observation bar, building your vintage wardrobe...I get really impatient with wanting a complete wardrobe right now but it will likely take me years and years. So for the time being I have my more traditional undergarments for those special times when my few vintage peices come out to play and these spanx when I am just accentuate what I am making do with. ;)

Hello Stephanie - Thank you for your inquiry. Yes, we are familiar with
this. It is only available in Europe at this time. Of note is a European
blog who actually has tried on the items. Apparently the bras have wires
along the top of the cups that look and fit strangely. The garments are
considered more for wearing in the bedroom than under clothing. I hope this

Is it possible to make your own girdle with garters? Is there a pattern for a 1940's period correct girdle that wouldn't be very expensive? Also are girdles comfortable enough to wear when your doing every day things like sitting, bending, etc.? What are some place that have period correct girdles that wouldn't make me penniless?

I've seen hundreds of [pictures of] vintage patterns, and I don't recall yet finding one for a girdle. I think finding the materials alone would've been cost-prohibitive back then; 1940s girdles used a variety of stuff, whether the heavy knit material for a simple tube OB, or the combination ones with elasticized/rubberized panels and brocades. Plus there's the hooks and eyes or lacing or zipper, buckles, different waist and bottom elastics, stretch trim, various woven tapes and bindings, etc. Finding the garters themselves is by far the easiest job.
The rest of your questions are pretty easily answered if you read back through this thread. There's an enormous amount of information here!

I really love corsets too, like so many of you here, I think they are wonderful. :D
Currently I am actually researching and making one for myself, and during my research I came upon the most interesting diary of a young teenagers experience of her first real set of corsets.
http://www.victoriaspast.com/MyFavoriteHouse/diary.htm
I don't know if any of you have read it but it's very interesting (though also quite long, I myself haven't read the whole thing) however I would thouroughly recomend it, some of the things she experienced seam really quite torturous, I'm just glad we don't have to go through it now.

Hey there gals, a little something I discovered this weekend that I thought I'd share....
I went on a mad bra shopping spree and had been looking at bras at Macy's. Then I went to Sears and discovered that Sears has the *exact* same styles (for Maidenform and Vanity Fair) in the same fabrics, but made specially for Sears (so different tags and model numbers) for an average of $10 less (or more!)
http://www.girdlebound.com/store/graphics/00000001/vanessa-6535-green.jpg
I have been looking at this Grenier Corsolette for over a year now. I finally decided I would buy it. But with additional 20 to dye it and 20 for shipping, I couldn't. I was around 130. It's just more than I am willing to spend. Yesterday I started looking for others that zipped and found the
Naturana Zip Front Corsolette
It nearly identical. Even shipped from the UK I am few dollars shy of 30!! I am so excited!

Kitty,
Were there any bras that you consider must haves? I tend to be an overly loyal bra buyer.

Awesome. The Rago corselette has never worked for me. Now I've realized that it's probably because I was ordering the wrong size cups. I may try again.

Nothing vintagey. I was just getting basics (2 plunge pushups, 2 balconettes, 2 seamless). There's a very, very pretty Maidenform lace balconette bra that comes in white and black - for I believe $13
http://www.maidenform.com/assets/images/product/z/3549_z.jpg
They also have some really nice contour bras (with molded cups and the smooth, no-show back straps) for around $20, I believe. Contour bras are usually pretty plain, but this one has a pretty scalloped edge and comes in a fun black with leopard print inside :-)
This one is the best and I love it - Felina Hint of Skin bra, lightly padded, seamless and tagless. The most flattering bra I've ever owned. I guess I would consider something like this to be a must-have.
http://ladygrace.com/images/500/6502.jpg
Target also had some Gilligan and O'Malley pretty lace briefs with a vintage feel to them. They're completely lovely, but unfortunately being discontinued. I found a 2 pack on sale for $6. I think I'm going to comb every Target store around for more in my size. Can't find a photo...

I have found that eBay is the way to go for girdles. You can find new ones for usually $10-20 less than retail and vintage ones for less, if you are a smaller size. Yes, they are comfortable to wear for everyday. They wore them everyday, after all.

How long do your bras last? In the spring, I bought some high-end bras that were really worth the money. It's the first time in my life I've had well-fitting underwire bras that really did the trick. Now, I've notice that I have to keep adjusting the strap tighter, I have to wear the hooks on the last set, because the elastic doesn't seem to be as tight. I have 4, so I'm not wearing the same one every day. Is this typical will well-fitting underwires? Before this, I was wearing cheap soft-cup granny bras that really had no lift and I wore them for years.

Huh, I've had the exact opposite finding. Most nice vintage girdles are very expensive and most newer Rago girdles I find are at comparable prices to Girdlebound or other stores. I looked forever for a deal on a Rago waist cincher and never found it.

I'm not the person to ask - I keep my bras way longer than I should lol

This is typical of all bras, underwire or not. The elastic will loosen up over time. That's why, when you buy a bra, you should make sure it fits on the *tightest* set of hooks, so you have room to move it as it stretches. If any saleswoman tells you (as one told me this weekend) that it should fit on the middle hooks, don't listen, because that's just plain incorrect. Also, this is why I won't ever buy front closure bras, because there's no way to adjust them as they stretch.
I guess it's also important to get refitted every once in awhile, since your size can change. The size I was wearing previously fit fine, and I didn't understand why all of a sudden they weren't fitting correctly. I lost weight, which probably explains it.

There was one on Girdlebound that they had made for them in an A cup... I think only the 32 and 34 though. By the time I saw them, all the A's were sold out. :( You'd think this would maybe tell manufacturers that there is a demand for them! You can get a custom made one from Touchable. I have one that I got years ago and it is very nice, but not cheap.

I thought you were supposed to buy them to fit on the loosest hooks. This makes more sense since you could then tighten it as it stretches. If you buy it fitting on the tightest hooks, you've got no where to go but looser...
My straps always stretch out too. Those clear straps they have now are the worst for stretching out in no time at all.

KamiKat, 3 months is 3 months, with normal wear and tear. However I have some that are older because I only use them on occasion. Shoot, I don't think anyone follows it, though. I actually need new ones.
KittyT, the only reason it said "the middle hook" is for weightloss or weight gain. I use to work for Frederick's (horrible job) and that was the idea behind it (with weight flunctuation happening within that 3 month frame, I guess? [huh] ). Personally, I found Frederick's bras, in particular, are very tight and do loosen up over time. The life of a bra is only supposed to be 3 months. That's with normal wear, of course. I have some that are older than that, only because I use them for certain occasions. I found that by the time 3 months came around, the bra was actually comfortable. :eusa_doh:

This is a GREAT suggestion! All my adult life, I've worn 42DD bras, that sagged to my knees because nothing else fit. Then I went to a very fancy shop downtown and the lady put me in a 36GG. For the first time in my life, the bras fit, feel comfortable and give me lift. Being professionally fitted made a HUGE difference.

I highly suggest getting fitted at Nordies (or anywhere you can be properly fitted). I recently lost weight and none of my bras were fitting right and I went to go get fitted last week and it turns out I lost a cup size AND a back size, hence the bra shifting throughout the day.
I haven't found a corselette that didn't make my girls look funny, so after going over many options (And picking my mothers brain about what they wore when she was a teenager) I am going to by a long line bra with boning and and a couple of these garter panties:

The only problem I have is when I need to run to the ladies' room and I'm wearing stockings lol I haven't been wearing a girdle that long, so I guess I'll figure out the mechanics of things soon enough. Yeah, you don't want the VS ones. First off, they'll provide no support. They probably also have plastic garter clips, which are worthless. I would go for a Rago panty girdle. They have a light control one that is quite comfortable.

What timing! I've been debating between the 1294 and the corselette. I have the waist cincher (21), which is absolutely fantastic for getting the defined waist and rounded hips of the New Look. But my problem area has always been my hips, so I definitely need something that will tame that area for my 1930s and early 1940s look.
Does anyone have both? What are your opinions? Or do you have other suggestions?
I'd be hesitant to try to by a corselette or high-waisted open-bottom girdle without trying it on first. Is there any store in Southern California that carries them?
I'd love to see how they work before committing to encasing my body in one ;)

I've read through quite a bit of this thread and there is so much information!
So, I have a question that I'm sure I could find answers to if I had hours of free time but I'm going to ask it anyway. :o
What are your recommendations for basic "starter" underpinnings?
What I mean is, what pieces are staples for you ladies? OB girdle, cincher, ect.
I'm no stranger to strong shapewear as I have a few steel-boned corsets that I wear for Ren Faires (oh, I've just shown my nerd cards!)
So, I think I'll do well comfort wise with firm shapewear.
I just don't know what pieces I should start with.

I think most gals here consider the Rago 1359 OB girdle (or the Rago Lacette OB) to be THE de facto starter girdles. I personally don't like it because I have problems with girdle roll at the top, but the 1369 was the first one I purchased on recommendations from this place. My unworn 1369 will be going up soon in the classifieds, btw. I prefer the Crown 212, which has a little more flexibility and give, and therefore gives me a nicer shape and is more comforble. It's also pretty and lacy. The only thing I don't like about it is that it's a 4 strap instead of a 6 strap like the Ragos.
I think as far as starter underpinnings, it really depends on what you hope your foundations will achieve for you. Do you just want a smooth line? Do you need waist shaping or size reduction? Do you need firm support? What eras do you wear?

I just bought some new items today that I know I'm going to love!
Desperately wanted a basic garter belt for the times when I'm wearing stockings but don't need or want the firm support of the panty girdles I usually wear. I'll admit that they're also in my lingerie drawer in case there's a time when I know someone might see them, because you know, panty girdles just aren't sexy. This belt is by Crown and has a nice firm and practical feel to it! I wish it had 6 straps instead of 4, but what can you do? I'd love one of the longer Rago 6 straps at some point, but that doesn't help me in the short run. These are much cheaper at about $20 a pop and Lady Grace is having a sale for members this weekend, so I was able to get a white one and a second black one at 50% off :)
http://www.ladygrace.com/images/200/1004.jpg
Also got this Crown girdlette, 11" length. I like it a lot! It's the same pretty lace as the Crown 212 and it's a nice, really firm garter belt. Also, really easy to wear panties over! Again, wish it was 6 straps, but I'll live. Unfortunately, it doesn't come in black.

I stick to mostly 40's with little forays into 30's and 50's. Mainly, I'm looking to get some definition back in my waist and smooth out the unlovely hip bumps that have sprouted up over the years.
I guess I should just bite the bullet and buy an ob girdle and see how it works.

I'm new to this so bear with me...
I want a more hippy-tucked-in-waist appearance for everyday. I tried on a girdle and don't really think it did anything for me. Should I try waist cinchers? Are they very awkward? Can I sit in one?
Thanks!
No, they aren't awkward. I wear mine alot and don't find it uncomfortable. Yes, you can sit in them.

Does anyone know anything about Elila bras? They seem to be the only brand that makes a long line bra above a F cup.
Sorry Kamikat but considering you've had such a time finding one in your size, snatch it up and report back to us!
Marzipan, the waist cincher is my preferred undergarment. Many days its the only piece I wear. During the summer I try to stay out of my stockings with my boys around, so I just wear a cincher and control panties.
Do long line bras control the waist at all? The corsolette I ordered sadly, while is great for smoothing took away my waist but gave me a great vintage chest! So I am thinking maybe a longline bra and garter belt with be my best option for hoisting the girl and keeping my stockings up without filling in my middle like many shapers seem to do.:(

Hi ladies!!!! I've been lurking for a while and finally joined the group. I have gotten so much great information from you all. I'm so glad to found a super forum like this. :)
I'm wondering if anyone is in the Tampa, FL area and knows of any nice lingerie shoppes down here that sells nice corsets and such. It would be so nice to be able to try things on before purchasing.

I now have my Rago 21 waist cincher (luv!) and now I wanna find a vintage bullet bra...my question:
If I wear a 34dd, is that what I should be looking for? Are vintage sizes the same? I am getting mixed messages from people and would love to know---I would hate to get something that is not refundable off the web, only to be super uncomfortable and disappointed---I mean, that's a risk I am willing to take (I'm sure I could resell it), but some guidance in advance would be helpful.
THANKS!!

I haven't come across many 34DDs in vintage sizings. The vintage bras I've bought have just been single D cups and have fit me just fine. You should be ok. There are also modern bullet bras you can buy out of the box at Sears.

Bullet bras at Sears?!?!? I haven't been to Sears in years, can you please give out the brands? I'm dying for a good bullet bra!
Thanks so much!

"Exquisite Form" is the brand they have at Sears:

I have not tried these yet...there appear to be a few styles. I am heading in there today...they don't look too bad for 14 bucks!

And I have just returned from Sears after trying on the bra above.....how do I say this.....it fit very strangely. :) Definitely the real deal and old school looking. They are made of cotton and there is very little stretch to the material (in fact, I think there is only a small bit of elastic right at the very back near the hooks) with simple straps and a nice wide band.
I usually wear a 34d and I could not find a 34---I tried on a 36B and still could not quite fill the cups. :) (But even looking at the model in this bra, you can see she does not really fill the cups either----I can see why the young check-out girl from "Animal House" had to stuff hers!.)
AND you could see that my nipplie-dipplies were a good two inches beneath the point of the cup, which made me feel droopy. They provide *very* little support. I am used to wearing jack-me-up underwires that give the girls a much needed boost...this bra left mine sort of sad and aged looking.
I put my sweater on over the bra anyway to see how it looked and just started laughing! My boobs looked very misshapen and pointy...and not in the good Jane Russell kind of way. :)
The overall appearance wearing just the bra was very retro looking and kinda cool....but I like to wear shirts over my bras....so that's out. :)
Even though this did not work for me, I could see it working for someone who has a different shape that I do.
The search continues....

Maybe a 36C would have fit.

No, I mean I had serious room left in the B cup..:)...the girls were swimming.....a C would have been even worse. But I am also thinking that the right band size (somewhere between a 32 and 34) would have helped considerably too. For all I know I could be a 32E or F....I need to go get a proper fitting as styles are changing. I am realizing my current bra, which is a 34dd, is too big, bandwise....i can fit my fist between my back and my band and pull it away....it should be alot more snug than that. Evidently the band should be snug enough that you can't do the whole "clasp it in the front and then turn it around" trick...if you can it means it is too big.
Here is a cool link about this schtuff:

This worked for me! I ended up going to Sears and, like usual, there were no 34Ds, but plenty of 36Cs. The lady that measured me at Victoria's Secret said the cup sizes are the same, the band just has a little more give on the 36C. It worked! But let me tell you, this is one bra I am NOT going to wear under an everyday shirt. It just looks toooooo funny lol :o :eusa_doh: .
