View Full Version : Favorite Vintage Perfumes

Reading and re-reading the favorite vintage makeup thread got me thinking of vintage perfumes. I know some old sents are still available today but I am just unsure when they are from. I know Emeraude is an older one. Anyone know when it was first out? I also recently saw L'Air Du Temps by Nina Ricci at TJ Maxx. I remember my grandmother having the empty bottle from that on her dresser, so I know it would be at least from the 1960's, maybe older.
I would love to hear what your favorits are and also a description of the sent. :)

My favorite vintage perfume is Quelques Fleurs--it was created in 1912.
Another fave of mine is Chanel Gardenia, which was released in the 1920s. It is the only Chanel perfume that I can wear--the others, like No. 5, are much to powdery for my taste.
Another heady gardenia fragrance is Fracas, which was released in 1948.
I would love to try some of the perfumes on this site, such as My Sin:
http://www.longlostperfumes.com/
Also, The Vermont Country Store carries a few vintage perfumes, including Evening in Paris (another scent I like):

By the way, L'Air du Temps was released in 1948. My great aunt wears this, and the scent is lovely.

Another wonderful Depression-era fragrance is Joy (1935). It was described as the most expensive perfume in the world
Apres L'Ondee was released in 1905.
Some of the Coty perfumes are still available as well. I found a bottle of L'Origan (the same scent used in Coty Airspun powder) on Ebay.
Also, Tabu (1932) is still around--though my very proper southern friend once said that her mother threw her bottle out, because "that is not a perfume for ladies." ;)
Here's another good article:

I wear Givenchy's "L'interdit" daily in spring/summer -- it was created by Givenchy for Audrey Hepburn alone. They released an altered formula previously, and it didn't do well. If memory serves me, the stuff out now is the original formula and it's lovely.
I can't do Chanel No. 5 or No. 22 -- too powdery, like JBD has said. I've had good luck with 19, which is a very green, almost masculine, scent. (Be forewarned, my best friend swears it smells like bug spray on her...) I would love to have a bottle of 19, but they only make eau du toilette for sale in the States, and the parfum is supposed to have a richer, less alcoholic scent.
Shalimar by Guerlain is another popular vintage scent, though this too is a little powdery. I like it though, it smells like a crisp autumnal day in northern India (er, not that I'd know from personal experience...I just have a good imagination) -- spicy, rich, exotic, and cozy. Guerlain, too, has kept their older, classic scents intanct, like L'Heure Blue and Jicky (haven't tried these yet).
I have a love/hate relationship with Arpege. It's haunting. It can also be spooky, so I don't know that I'd wear it ;) I guess it's the aldehydes...it reminds me of something a ghost would smell like which is both a little eerie and sort of romantic. The drydown is worth it, but the initial aldehydes scare me off.
I would really love a chance to try more vintage perfumes...Caron still sells many of their vintage scents. So does Creed. A good place to look is "The Bombshell Manual of Style" -- it's an adorable little book and has an entire chapter devoted to perfumes.
I'm excited about this thread -- can't wait to run out and test some new things...

1000 (Mille--from Jean Patou, the same company as Joy.)
Mitsuko by Guerlain.
When did Chanel No.5 come out?

I love Shalimar too, but only in the bottle. It turns acrid and powdery on my skin, just like Chanel No. 5. Both are perfumes that I can only enjoy on others.

Chanel No. 5 was released in 1921--but I imagine that many people associate it with Marilyn Monroe in the 1950s ;)

I can sympathize, Amanda -- I nearly cried when I tried No. 5 for the first time. It smelled exactly like baby powder on me...Talk about destroying the mystique!
Do men still send perfume as a present? I think all the men in my life are scared to death of perfume counters, and of girly stuff in general. Unless they knew exactly what I wanted I don't think they'd be able to cowboy up and march into Bloomingdales for it. Though really, can you see Humphrey Bogart hemming and hawing at the cosmetics counter? Maybe the world hasn't changed as much as I'd like to think after all...;)

I can't say that I've ever received perfume as a gift from a love interest--even with a specific request ;) However, I do know of a few husbands who buy their wives perfume--but they always buy the same 'signature' scent.
Queenie--it smells worse then baby powder on me. It is so strong it's cloying! However, I believe that they have changed the formula, as is the case with many vintage fragrances still available. So, we can pretend that Chanel No. 5 would have been lovely on us in the 1940s ;)

Good day ladies. I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢d like to offer my humble opinion to this feminine thread. I once received a letter with a nice sent to it. I liked it very much. If a young lady who I adore wanted a bottle of her favorite perfume, I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢d go and buy it. The cosmetic counters in Department stores are some what scary for the pure reason I don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t know what?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s going on there. You know, like what?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s good and for what reason it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s good.
There are some really good fragrances and some really powerfully bad ones! Just sitting in Church some times an older lady will walk by and smell like she just poured on all the samples at the Clinique counter. I swear, if there were flowers in the building, they would wilt as she walked by.
I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢m quite sure you ladies here know what you?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢re doing in this area. You all seem to have fine taste in every thing vintage.
It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s really intriguing how some of the fragrances from the past are still around. I would like to find good cologne that has been around for the last 80 years for my self but, I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢m some what uneducated in colognes as well. Do any of you have a favorite that a guy like I might wear to complete the vintage look and ad a vintage aroma?
Good day ladies,
Root.

Root, your post was too charming for words. Makes a girl feel good to know some boys still have guts and taste ;)
If a fella can do it right, nothing is as equisite as a fine, subtle cologne. Too much is vile, but just enough to linger on a lady's skin or clothes after a long evening out is just wonderful. I remember the first time I ever danced with a boy, in 9th grade, and the secret joy I had in discovering his scent lingering in my dress as I took it off in the solitude of my bedroom. I also remember the comforting smell of Old Spice lingering in my school uniforms as a girl from hugging my wonderful and deeply-missed grandfather goodbye in the mornings.
As for specifics, I'm really at a loss...The Bombshell Manual had a few suggestions, but I can't remember them all off the top of my head. Irish Tweed was one of them. Also, and I don't know anyone who's tried this, but J.Peterman makes a really pretty bottle of men's cologne http://jpeterman.com/cgi-bin/sgdynamo.exe?UID=!+USID!&HTNAME=\html\jp-products/OM\collection-1903.html I love the wood casing!
Also, a fellow just can't go wrong with Bay Rum. I think it's got a beautiful vintage aura to it, and it's a man's man scent. Something colonial and exotic about it without being pert...Visions of blistering tropical sun, a gorgeous white linen suit, and a fine panama hat. There's the variety store stand by, St. John's http://stjohnsbayrum.com/category.php?category_id=1 These fellas have nice packaging http://www.calantilles.com/catcframes/Products/Meehan/combo.html
I would shop around, and whatever you do, try it on your skin for a day first! Scents react with your body's unique chemistry and take a while to show their true colors. Caveat Emptor!

I have a book called 100 parfums de l?ɬ©gende written by Sylvie Girard-Lagorce
http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/2263030212/402-1270354-3643315
Mine is in Swedish the original is French I did not see any English translation of it. But it is a nice book with information about when the parfume was made and some text about how it smells and of course pictures of the bottles several parfumes mentioned in this thread is in the book with the dates when it was made etc. The book is written 2000.
My first grown up parfum was channel no 5 it smelled good on me when I was 16. Some month ago when I was shopping for a new parfume I tried it on my skin again and this time I did not like the smell. One parfum from the 40's I like but does not use myself it was my mothers parfum so I still connect it to her and does not want to use it is Femme from Roshas.

Wow, sounds like an order! I take it you like that potion then.
I can't remember what No.5 smells like but, it sure has a name one can find in most movies and songs. It's really interesting how a perfume could smell different depending on one's own chemical balance. I have tried some nice concoctions ever so often from friends and well, they always seemed to smell ok and not different then they did in the bottle.
Carry on!

This is going great I am getting a lot a super info from you all! I was talking to my mother about the perfumes a few minutes ago and she also mentioned Tabu. She said my grandmother kept it in a drawer and only used it on special occasions. She remembers giving Evening in Paris as gifts to teachers.
I and Dh both dislike powdery fragrances. We call them "old lady" perfumes. My DH's step-mother wears one that is a good example. I think it might be Interlude. It's been a long time since I smelled Channel No.5.

CherryRed, you mentioned Nina Rcci's L'Air de Temp, and I just remembered Ricci has another, Vol du Nuit, which if I remember right, has a muskier scent than L'Air.
It's interesting how some brands that began as couturiers got into the perfume game, and then, later on, cosmetics. I suppose it's their ambition to have the women be able to shop for everything in a single House.

Oooh! I'm surprised, actually. I have to hold my breath when I run past a Bath and Body Works most of the time...brings back horrible memories of high school (all girl's school) when the girls would whip out their lotion and body spray bottles and soak themselves and their friends in the 5 or 6 scents du jour before every class. Individually, they're not terrible, it was just the quantity and variety that was sickening. I hope I never have to smell "plumeria" again ;)
I may have to brave the shop again to take a gander at these new ones, though!

I remember that--those perfumes were so strong and syrupy! The sad part is, these girls grew up and now do the exact same thing at the office. Yuck!
This is one of the perfumes; when I was there in February, I think there were three individual scents. To me, the lavender smelled very old-fashioned, but in a good way ;)

Yuck is right -- I can't help associating the smell of those cloyingly sweet lotions with teenage drama and gym-room horseplay. Too much is just too much. Scent really needs a light hand and intelligent application.

When I was a kid I was introduced to two perfumes that I thought smelled really neat and still remember fondly.
When I was perhaps 10 years old, I went to a rummage sale where I made my very first ever purchase of 78 rpm records. I also bought a few old bottles that were displayed on a table. One was an old Dromedary Pimentos bottle, the other was a bottle with a nut grinder in the lid and the other one was an empty bottle of Bal a Versailles perfume. I think I paid perhaps a nickel or a dime each for the bottles. I was just a kid and did not really know much about antiques and old stuff other than the fact that I was beginning to realize that old things (buildings, cars, furniture, etc) generally looked better than new stuff. Turns out that the brand of perfume only dates back to 1962 which, in terms of the era that I am interested in, is downright modern. At the time, however, I was convinced that the bottle had to be very old and perhaps even valuable in part due to the pictures of 18th century ladies on the label and the ornate glass stopper on top. While the bottle was empty, one could still smell the perfume inside. I thought it smelled VERY nice and, ever since, that has been sort of my ideal of what a ladies' perfume should smell like. In fact, even by the time I graduated from high school eight or so years later, I could still smell the perfume in the bottle. They still make the perfume. See: http://shopping.yahoo.com/b:Bal%20a%20Versailles:22442751 I am sure the bottle is probably still in my old bedroom at my parents' house. I will have to check next time I am over there if the perfume can still be smelled after all these years.
Also when I was a kid, my mother had a bottle of a German Eau de Cologne called 4711 that is used by men as well as women. 4711 dates back to the late 1700s and was named after the street address of this (http://www.4711.com/en/webcam.html) building in Cologne, Germany. I was absolutely crazy about the smell of the stuff. I remember whenever I was sick my mother always used to put some on a napkin as a way of making me a bit more comfortable.
It has been years since I have actually smelled either Bal a Versailles or 4711 - but I remember them very vividly and fondly.

My favorite perfume is Miss Dior Cherie. The bottle is made in the 40's style and the perfyme itself smells so good! Only bad thing is a bottle of Miss Dior Cherie costs 75?¢‚Äö¬¨ (about 60-65$) but I hope my husband will give it to me as a birthday present ;)
Here's something I found from the internet:
Miss Dior Cherie Perfume by Christian Dior, A New Spin On A Timeless Classic, Miss Dior Cherie By The Design House Of Christian Dior Introduced This Elegant Modern Fragrance In 2005. They also sell a lot of the make-up brands mentioned earlier in the powder room.
The cologne called 4711 was used by my grandmother and I also liked the smell when I was a child.
About old perfumes the smell can change and often it does and especially in this old bottles you use your fingers to apply the perfume with. The best thing is to keep the bottle dark and cool and not even have it for display on the table. I guess only a few follows this rule. I do not parfum bottles are too nice to be stored away.

As far as the talcum, the only way I've ever used it is to brush the hair off the back of the neck for my clientale after a haircut and rinse. They don't feel as itchy after,so I would say it soothes.
I use powder (of course, not this one)and have always put it on slightly damp skin very sparingly. My job requires us to wear all black in the fall/winter and I've never had a problem with it ending up on my clothing.
Hope that helps!
Of course,it'd probably be easiest just to try the after-shave.

Hi!
I just recently discovered Narciso Rodriguez (http://www.perfumeemporium.com/womens/details.cfm?ID=8938) at Nordstrom (the link provides a great description & review of it). My first thought was that it smelled quite vintage. Sort of that spicey CoCo scent. It's made with Egyptian Musk and is extremely sexy. I'm wearing a sample of it today. It might be a bit too dark & peppery for me, but it's worth giving a sniff at your local department store if you're looking for a new signature scent.

Got a 40s bottle of Joy. Will take a picture and post soon. It's the cutest bottle. The question is - to open, or not to open? It is unopened and sounds and feels almost full. Can't see because it's a black bottle. Obviously it's evaporating through the cork so I can smell it at the neck, but oh what to do. I won't open it till I'm going to use it (and I've got a fair bit of scent to get through yet), but if I open it, I've kind of broken something that's been perfect for 60 odd years. If I leave it unopened, I've only got a dressing table adornment. What would PR ladies do, what have you done, and what was the result for you with your perfume of choice? And I've got a similar Arpege problem. This has been gnawing at me for weeks. :D

Im not one for flowerly sents, or musky like sents as well. I also wear a body powder, and dont want a perfume getting in the way of that siimple clean sent.
I tend to wear a vanilla musk body oil everyday for my sent. Gotten many compliments on it too. Its light, and can linger on my clothes and leaves a very yummy tone behind.

Most perfume after a while irritates my skin, so I try to avoid it.

Hi Caledonia, it's a bit scary isn't it. Generally perfume lasts better in dark/opaque bottles but even then there is no real guarantee.
I would LOVE to know how your vintage Arpege smells, I am a HUGE Arpege fan. It would be the original formula too which (if time has been kind) may be quite an experience. The formula took a bit of a nose dive towards the end of it's life in the hands of Lanvin apparently this was due to market competition as the ingredients of Arpege are very expensive and complex. L'oreal bought it out in 1996 and restored it to it's former glory. There are those who claim that the original stands alone..........
Like you say it's whether you want an ornamental unopened bottle or if you want to break it open and explore.
I have no idea how they will turn out, depends how they have been stored.
Can't wait to see the pics of your "Joy", I think I would be brave and carefully open it.....
Hope it's gorgeous if you do.....:) :) :)

Thanks Eve. When husband brings the camera back I'll take photos. The Arpege bottle is either 30s or 40s I'd guess from the box, note insert etc, but I'm not sure. It's certainly not earlier. I tried the modern Arpege recently and wasn't too impressed, for my chemistry that is, but the oldie is sitting there calling me! I'm pulling towards agreeing with you about opening it. Let's face it, if it's gone off I've still got the ornament!

It won't last forever, USE IT! Or as the song goes "Don't save it too long, it won't do you no good"
I had an opaque bottle of 30s lavendar perfum which went bad. I'm not a big lavendar fan anyway, so I wasn't too broken up.

That's the way I would look at it, and if you are never going to sell it then you may aswell enjoy it.
I've only got the modern Arpege, I still haven't splurged on a vintage version yet.

Have you tried Ma Gryffe? Only have the modern, but it is gorgeous. I think the 70s Rive Gauche may have been inspired by it. And tried Chanel 19 the other week. Beautiful - fresh cut meadow grass. Jitterbugdoll has some fabulous recommendations earlier in the thread which I've noted and am trying to find. Shalimar doesn't work for me I'm sorry to say, but I'm going to try Tabu for my example of risque vintage scents. Haven't found Bandit yet, but hopeful. I'm not picky about whether the scent is old or the modern version, but my ideal would be to have a half dozen vintage scents that become my signature across the seasons and either have a true vintage bottle of them and then/or find vintage bottles and decant the modern version into them. The Joy bottle would be a joy to do that with. Here's hoping husband hasn't drowned the camera again! :)

Caledonia, I love Bandit, but you might find it a bit "challenging." This is one of the least sweet fragrances ever. The main notes are leather and aldehyde, and not much else. If you have a good nose you might smell the carnation (I don't always smell them) and the castoreum (not usually a good smell). It is my bad girl on a rampage scent.
Here is my abbreviated list of favorite vintage frags:
Narcisse Noir by Caron 1911: beautiful and intoxicating.
N'aimez que Moi - Caron 1917: I wear this at least once a week, violet rose and vanilla beautiful, bought a new bottle in Paris this year.
Tabac Blonde - Caron 1917: made for the androgynous flapper type. tobacco and leather notes, sweet and beautiful, but not ordinary.
Narcisse Blanc Caron 1922: sweet and gentle version of narcisse Noir, I have a sample, very pretty.
Nuit de Noel Caron 1922: Very popular scent, some aldehyde but soft, available at Vermont Country Store.
En Avion Caron 1929: A homage to the aviatrix. A nice woody scent, I love this one, but don't wear it much
L'heure Bleue - Guerlain 1912: wonderful scent
Mitsouko Guerlain 1919: named after a Japanese princess, peach and oakmoss much beloved by everyone but me.
Gardenia Chanel 1925: Lovely gardenia scent
Cuir de Russie Chanel 1924: nice soft feminine leather and jasmine scent. I wore it all the time until I misplaced my bottle.
Bois des Iles Chanel 1926: one of my favorite Chanel's.
Emeraude Coty 1921: I haven't worn this in years, but it is still out there.
Liu Guerlain 1929: I tried this one once, it is interesting modern.
Habanita Molinard 1921: peach and oak moss, but much better mix than Mitsouko
French Cancan Caron1936: leather and roses, I love this one. It was originally considered too much for Paris, only released in America.
Angelique Encens Creed 1933: One of my all time favorites. It was designed for Marlene Dietrich, incense and amber, strong though and expensive it is only sold in $300 bottles, I have a little decant.
Crown Heliotrope Crown Perfumery 1939: lovely scent but discontinued :(
Tabu Dana 1932: Nice scent for the money
Vol de Nuit Guerlain 1933: very classy and moderne
Vega Guerlain 1936: odd scent, mine reminds me of bubbles
Coque D'or Guerlain 1937: I tried this is Paris, really nice girly scent.
Joy Jean Patou 1930: My mom still wears this, classy
Farnesiana Caron 1947: This is one beautiful scent, amber powdery
Or et Noir Caron 1949: amber and rose, another favorite from Caron
Miss Dior Dior 1947: my favorite Dior
L'air du Temps Nina Ricci 1948: lovely, make sure you get a vintage bottle
Bandit Piguet 1945: leather, get out your whips
Fracas Piguet 1948: Tuberose, I can't wear this one, nice on the right person

I have never even smelt Ma Gryffe! I will have to go and investigate...:)
Last year I spent a long time researching perfumes as the one I had been using for years suddenly had a "remarket" and everyone started to wear it including my partner's ex-wife! So I decided a change was in order.
I wore Guerlain's Nahema for a while but even in the pure parfum version this doesn't seem to linger long on my skin.
Anyway I discovered that I'm apparently an "Aldehydic Floral" type:confused:  , as most things I sniffed and liked were in this group.
So there I was last Christmas in the Selfridges department armed with my list of the 3 I had whittled it down to and Arpege won hands down even in it's modern blend.
The other 2 finalists were Guerlain's Chamade and Joy.
Wasn't Marilyn Monroe a fan of Joy?

My ex was allergic to perfumes, so I could rarely wear any for a long time -- when I was younger, I was fond of L'Aimant by Coty. I also liked Shalimar, but it was out of my price range in those days.
I keep meaning to treat myself to a nice vintage fragrance -- these days I mostly just smell like Fels Naptha.

lol I tried L'Aimant too, quite nice. I think I prefer L'Air du Temps from that kind of range though.
Agree with you on Mitsouko Tourbillion. It was recently voted the best perfume of all time, but for the life of me I don't know why. It smells confused, old, and like it's been lying in a stagnant puddle for days - or maybe that's me! Great list though T. Some I hadn't heard of. Now it's going to take me even longer to whittle down to my 6 best. :)

wow, This thread has inspired me. I don't wear any vintage scents but now I think I better try some. I wear Oscar de la Renta's Volupte which I think was released in the 90s, I think it smells like Mr. Bubbles that is probably why I like it. I also wear a perfume oil called Rain from a little shop in St. Paul, MN called The Garden of Eden, this one really does smell like spring rain. Both of these scents are very light and not too over powering which is important to me.
Any suggestions for a light and fresh scented vintage perfume?

Hi MissMissy,
You could see if you could find Apres L'ondee by Guerlain, it literally means "after the shower" bit like your Rain. It has middle notes of Violet and Hawthorn, but packs a good dry-down with musky base notes. You may find it too, too much but it's always good to try something and see.
The vintage bottles of this are just beautiful, (formulated in 1906).
You may also like Diorissimo, which is very fresh, I think it is a 50's scent.
There were a lot of true florals about in the 30's and 40's too, things like Apple Blossom,Violet, and Bluebell. Penhaligons of London do gorgeous pure flower scents in very lovely bottles, whilst they are not true vintage they are all excellent. I have the Violet http://www.penhaligons.co.uk/ishop/1/shopscr110.html
A lot of the older perfumes generally seem stronger when you use them as they are based on very good ingredients; absolutes etc. Don't let this put you off though as once the top notes have evaporated many of the initially powerful scents have an incredible, haunting linger.

Another classic Guerlain that you might try is Jicky. It started a perfume revolution. It is a fougere, from 1889 it opens with a fresh, cool lavender (and citrus) note, and warms up as it dries.

Okay ladies. Here is the absolute best place to find older fragrances anywhere on the net and I know because...well...perfume is my addiction.
It is scentiments.com. I've found Shocking which is and was for the time it arrived, Jolie Madame,( gardenias, gardenias, gardenias, which it smells like,)
Youth Dew, Vol de Nuit, etc. They have both the Coty fragrances, L'Aimant &
L'Origan which is what Coty Face Powder smells like.
#5 also smells like baby powder on me, Shalimar the same.
Does anyone know about the perfumes that would made to go with furs? Detachma is by Revillion is the only one that remains around and is rarer than hen's teeth.

I really love Chanel #5 Elixir Sensual which comes in an elegant bottle it's diferent because it is a gel like fluid you can pour on it is very lovely. I also really like poison by Christian Dior but i don't know if that is vey old fashion but it does smell like it could have been around a while. I also love to where Youth Dew by Estee Lauder but it is a bit strong going on but after a few hours it really mixes with you chemistry really nice teh body cream is wonderful it comes in a huge jar with elegant gold lid and i love how it displays in my bathoom it is by far the best moisturizer and will leave you as soft as can be like satin. But i gota be honest here my signature pefume is Happy by Clinique which isn't very vintage at all:o !

I wanted to ask any of the lady's about this vintage perfume i recently bought on ebay! It is called Irrisistable i think it might have came out in the 1930's or 1940's. It had a drop left over still in the bottle but it smelled so so lovely that i wish they still made it!It has a very feminine scent do you know where i might find it or if there is something i can buy that's close to this scent? If any lady's know where i can find it or have smelled this perfume before let me know!

Hi Dollfaced,
I do not know anything about the Irrisistable perfume that you have found but I have an idea for you...I have a book by a perfume maker by the name of Mandy Aftel - she is becoming quite popular and famous. The title of the book is Essence and Alchemy - A Book of Perfume, it is a book about perfume making and is quite facinating. (she goes way back in the history of perfuming back to the midieval days then down through the ages to current times) If you are not able to track this perfume down Mandy can custom make a perfume for you and she is quite knowledgeble in all the different perfumes and the different notes so she would probably be able to duplicate it, her website is:
www.aftelier.com, I have always wanted my own custom made perfume!
The perfume I wear currently is Shalimar (it does not end up to powdery on me fortunatly) I believe it was made in the 1920's.
I know earlier in this thread-recieving gifts of perfume was mentioned. I had a sweetheart in the late 80's and he would always give me perfume for Christmas and my birthday. I never would drop hints as to what I liked or wanted so it was always a total surprise as to what he would come up with. It was always expensive perfumes from Nordstrom and all of them smelled good on me. He would have his sister help him shop-she has excellent taste in everything.

Thank you Brooksie for your interesting post i will definatly check out that site! That sweetheart you had in the 80's really want to go all out for you how sweet :) . He must have really wanted to be perfect when picking out something out for you by taking along his sister maybe his sister had good taste since you liked everything he got you. I thought about taking the perfume bottle with me to the mall and trying to find something close to it but since it is vintage possibly from the 1940's i thought my chances were going to be slim in finding a perfect match.I bought this tin sign that has a really pretty girl on it with all these products in the picture like a perfume bottle.rouge, lipstick, face powder, face cream all called Irresistable and the sign says be Irresistable tonight it is so cute i hung it in my restroom one day on ebay i saw the perfume for bid so i won it then i won a brand knew rouge still in the package thought this was really cool to put in the bathroom.

Emeraude can be found at this e-mail address <beautyboutique.com>

Another wonderful Depression-era fragrance is Joy (1935). It was described as the most expensive perfume in the world
Apres L'Ondee was released in 1905.
Some of the Coty perfumes are still available as well. I found a bottle of L'Origan (the same scent used in Coty Airspun powder) on Ebay.
Also, Tabu (1932) is still around--though my very proper southern friend once said that her mother threw her bottle out, because "that is not a perfume for ladies." ;)
Here's another good article:

Has anyone used "My Sin" ?
I read an article from a Womens Mag in the 40's, the author was talking about this perfume, so i googled it and it's still being made........
My Sin Perfume was created by the Parisian house of Jeanne Lanvin in 1925 and has top notes of bergamot, heliotrope, neroli, aldehydic accord and carnation. Middle notes of ylang-ylang, lily of the valley, violet, iris, rose and jasmin. Dry down notes of musk, vetiver and sandalwood. My Sin Perfume is a classic, sensuous beauty.
Wonder if it smelles good, it's too expensive to take a punt, even though i just love the name !lol

My dad used to buy "Joy" for my mum - has done for at least 30 years now.
Which is one of the most romantic things I ever heard, because her name is Joy...
Sadly I never took to it - too rose-scented for me.
I don't have a vintage perfume yet and I'm trying to find one. Chanel is the only brand I know from the early-mid 1900's and it is too musty for me, too heavy. I like floral scents.
I know Vermont Country Store has a bunch of purfumes...I'm just always so nervous to try them without smelling them first.

Hi Emer
Chanel have reworked No 5 and it is now on the shelves as No 5 Eau Premiere. It's lighter than the original but still definitely No 5. You might want to try it. It doesn't suit me any better than No 5, but it just might be you.
Shalimar is classic and still one of the most popular scents ever (not mine I'm afraid). Fracas is still also popular. Patou's Joy is still available but I find it too heavy. Do a google for vintage perfumes. You'll find research sites quite easily. This is a good one.

I love Givenchy L'interdit, which was created for Audrey Hepburn in 1957. Apparently it was reformulated and rereleased a few years ago. Somehow my husband tracked down a bottle of the original for a Christmas present when we were courting. It is really lovely. I wore it at my wedding. If you can find a bottle of the old stuff it is wonderful.

I bought it on impulse and am so glad I did, since I got it home, I absolutely love it, its so rich and mysterious. I am on an "auntie mame" kick - the books, etc. and Nuit de Noel is mentioned. There's an oldie from Caron. Very potent.
Re Guerlain Mitsouko.. does that have a "peach" vibe to it, or am I confusing it with something else?

Yes, Mitsouko does have a peach note, personally I find the whole thing so well blended that the individual notes don't stand out from each other very strongly but as it dies down you get the peachy warmth from it.

I'm glad this thread is back!
While I have been enjoying Chanel No. 5 for a couple of years now, I'm in the mood for a change. Normally I'm not much for floral scents, and I would like something lighter than No. 5, but still musky and spicy. Any suggestions? I should probably check out Guerlain, it sounds like they have a lot of nice perfumes and they should be available here in Copenhagen.
Any of you ladies have any Caron fragrances? I have not tried them yet, but they sound mesmerizing. Unfortunately I won't be going to Paris any time soon, but I will be going to London in January and I'll be sure to go to Harrod's to check out Caron's Tabac Blond (http://www.parfumscaron.com/UK/perfumes_powders/perfume_fountains/tabac_blond.html):
The perfume: Mild and powerful, coppery overtones combined with a floral heart note. True to type. Oriental leather.
The personality: Troubling sensuality of a woman in a dinner jacket… A touch of masculine nonchalance.
Also, while I'm there, I'll have a look at Creed Fragrances. Oh it will be marvelous!

I would love to try it. And I don't really know if No. 5 really is so heavy or if it's just that I've gotten so used to the smell and just need a change in order to be able to appreciate it fully again.
No. 5 will always remind me of this night at the opera when I sat next to a women who smelled so wonderful that I just kept leaning closer and closer to her, it was intoxicating and I had no idea what it was. Afterwards I asked her and she told me it was No. 5.
I've worn No. 5 ever since, every day, so I guess I've worn it out. :) Is that common with a scent? Is it better to switch between a couple so you don't get so used to it? I've always just used one perfume at a time.

Number 5 reworked? Oh no!
I know the Vermont Country Store sells Evening in Paris; I've always wondered what it was like.
Has anyone worn it?
The old No. 5 is still available, they just released an updated version, a bit like Coco vs. Coco Mademoiselle only with less re-working.
Yes Soir de Paris/Evening in Paris is a rose-violet on a amber-powder base. It is a bit strange to me, but wearable. I am referring to a vintage bottle though, it may have been reworked by now.
Anyway, the difference between Chanel's Cuir de Russie and Tabac Blond is pretty big. Cuir de Russie is a soft and sweet leather scent (with aldehydes), and Tabac Blond has a strong and heavy floral/vanilla note and is much less masculine than all the reviewers make out IMHO. It has a strong leather note, but I don't find it mannish at all.
If you want something mannish, try Habanita, it is leathery and smells like cigars. It was supposed to evoke Cuban cigar girls, and does so really well. The oppoponax top note takes getting used to though.
There is also Bandit, which is the least sweet women's leather perfume I have. It is a bit naughty, a dry leather scent (aldehydes, leather, civet and a slight touch of carnation) that evokes new leather jack boots, so not exactly sensual in the traditional way. ;)

Tourbillion - excellent point. Bandit is the most mannish of the "leathery" scents. Tabac Blond is heavy, though. I think much heavier than No. 5. Just my opinion, but I'm "smell sensitive". I just had to have it because it is Caron and I love the way the bottle looks on my vanity.

What's a good, green or light floral vintage scent that's not really expensive? I was recommended Chanel No. 19 but that's a bit steep so I'd be interested in alternatives.
I was thinking something with vanilla or tuberose or bergamot or something. Not really heavy floral. But not citrus. I'm willing to try sort of a beginner's musk (like a kitten heel I guess, hehehe!) and pretty bottles are nice too.
You all are the ladies I trust!

Fracas fits the bill since it is tuberose, it might not be what you want price-wise. To me anything vanilla or tuberose is really heavy though.
You could try White Shoulders too, though I personally consider it really heavy.
Maybe you could try Arpege (1927). It is not too expensive today, and is a light aldehyde floral with the notes you like.

I just bought L'Heure Bleue by Guerlain and it's simply wonderful! Warm without being too sweet, the anise and tarragon are really there, which makes it so interesting. The floral notes are not that floral and not tangy at all. Instead it's more of an abstract floral accord. It's simply out of this world dreamy.
Top note: Bergamot, Star Anise / Chinese Anise, Tarragon
Heart note: Cloves, Orange Blossom, Rose, Tuberose
Base note: Iris, Vanilla
Is there any musk in L'Heure Bleue?
Tourbillion, I looked for Cuir de Russie but the Chanel shop here in Copenhagen did not have it. :( I'm looking forward to smelling a leathery perfume.
I also tried Shalimar and Mitsouko. I did not like Mitsouko, it smelled really sharp on me. When I first put on Shalimar it smelled really bad on me but now that the top note is gone it smells nice, but very sweet. I will have to go to the shop and give it an extra smell soon.

I don't have any vintage perfumes myself, but I'm all kinds of intrigued now!
I only wear two scents;
azuree soleil by Estee Lauder
Poison by Dior (some might consider this vintage; it came out in the early 80's. lol )
Great thread, lots of wonderful info. :)

I LOVE Island Gardenia. It is my summer perfume. I see now that Jungle Gardenia is at Vermont Country Store. I wonder if they smell the same?
I scored a set of my signature L'Air Du Temp on sale at Walgreen's before Christmas for $17.50. Over an ounce of the perfume plus lotion and shower gel. A very good deal for that size.

I need help to find a vintage fragrance that's still in production that can meet my current needs.
My body chemistry used to prefer the girly fruit/floral/vanilla fragrances, then the spicy/floral/woodsy/musk/vanilla fragrances - generally heavier, and now I can't wear anything that has vanilla, spices, (the musk?) or sharp florals in them.
I wanted to store the ones I have upside down in their boxes but I guess I must've thrown the boxes away. I'll try to spritz into the air and walk through the mist method and see if I can get them used up that way within this year if I don't find a vintage sollution.
I've got Dior Dolce Vita, EL Pure White Linen, CK Euphoria, and EA Fifth Ave. After Dark. I just got the last one for my birthday on the 22nd Dec.08 after begging for it for over a year. I got Dolce Vita and Pure White Linen the previous bday/X-mas. I feel so guilty. :o
I was Euphoric about Euphoria at the end of Fall and through December. It's been colder than Fall/Winter 07-08 so it wasn't too overpowering. I'm a homemaker and it's just fine when I'm out walking in the cold but now I can't stand it on me but it's still fine in the bottle and dito the other fragrances so it may be a body chemistry change? I still have 3/4 of it left. I can't even wash Euphoria off now.

I just received a bottle of Joy for Christmas from my sweetie. I just LOVE it. I like light floral scents (mostly gardenia and tuberose). I was able to find a sample of Chanel Gardenia on Ebay and am waiting for it to arrive this week. I think I will try Fracas next.
I wear Tabu every day, I don't know what is about this perfume but I can't help it I am addicted. I wear Anais Anais - made by Carcharel, there was a article done in an Australian magazine and this was in the classic section the same as Tabu, I know Tabu came out in the 30's and was for woman "liked adventure". My latest perfume was brought for me by my DH for christmas, it is Magnifique - made by Lancome.
I am sorry to say ladies that I could not tell you what these smell like because I was always told that you should not be able to smell your own perfume when it is on, if you can you have to much on.

I just got a few decants from The Perfumed Court (http://theperfumedcourt.com) and here are my initial reactions:
Tabac Blond by Caron (pure parfum)
Oh my, it's very tobacco, very smoky. My immediate reaction was that it smells too much like cigarette smoke, but after 10 minutes, as the top notes wore off, it really softened and started to smell like pipe tobacco in stead - much nicer! Let's see how it develops from here. I have to get used to the top notes if I'm going to wear it. No leather smell, though, which I really expected. Howcome?
Cuir de Russie by Chanel (eau de toilette)
It's quite flowery, especially the top notes. The leather is there too, much more than in Tabac Blond.
Angelique Encens by Creed (eau de parfum)
Wonderful, just wonderful! The notes are supposed to be angelica, tuberose, bergamot, amber, incense, vanilla. Unfortunately, my unexperienced nose doesn't really know what angelica and tuberose smell like, but they must smell wonderful because this perfume does have a lovely sweet note that I cannot identify. But I am sure that the bergamot kicks in at fist and after that the flowery notes mix with the incense and vanilla and make it sweet and mysterious.
When the spicy heart notes kick in, it actually reminds me a lot of Calvin Klein's Obsession (the notes here are vanilla, amber, orange blossom, oakmoss, oriental spices). At offset, they are very different, though. Whereas Obsession becomes spicy very quickly, Angelique Encens stays flowery a tad longer, which makes it less heavy and sweet.
Oh, and I don't know what amber smells like either. If someone can explain the unknown notes to me (tuberose, angelica and amber), I would highly appreciate it! :)
Narcisse Noir by Caron (pure parfum)
My first impression was that it was one of the most remarkable scents I've ever encountered. The top notes are very sweet and candy-like. I have trouble smelling the orange blossoms, but I'm sure it's just my nose. The civet is really there though. :o
Edit: Maybe I need to try Narcisse Blanc, the civet is becoming revolting on me. Too bad. :(
Unfortunately, The Perfumed Court forgot to send me Jicky, so I'm looking forward to more civet there. ;)

Some people can wear the same fragrances, all the time, over many decades. Some unfortunate people such as myself experience chemistry changes every 2 years, or so - it seems. Highly annoying.
I take season, time of day, occasion and mood into account as much as it's possible with four fragrances. I can't afford a fragrance wardrobe. I'm trying to watch what I eat and use for moisturizers to see if that has any influence on how a fragrance smells on me.
My skin is naturally very dry but I've actually been able to keep a very good moisture balance this winter. I wonder if that's why the heavier ones are a bit too heavy on me?

Do any of you know/ use the perfume arpege?
I was browsing the web for some more unusual/mysterious vintage perfumes and came across this one. However, it is rather expensive and I don't normally like buying perfumes without trying them first. The only problem is that there is nowhere near me that sells vintage perfumes, so online stores are my only option.
I was therefore wondering if any of you ladies think it is worth buying? (Or if it smells absolutley vile? lol )

Where in the UK do you live? Lanvin's Arpège is a quite classic, popular scent, I've seen in in most stores here in Copenhagen, so most larger cities in the UK should have a store that carries it. Or are you only looking for the original vintage Arpège?
It's definitely an interesting scent and worth a try. My first impression of it was nice, but I don't own it myself yet. It's difficult to say how it would work on you, you just need to sample it. You can easily order a small samle from The Perfumed Court (http://theperfumedcourt.com/Products/Lanvin-Vintage-Arpege-EDP__LANVINARPEGEEDP.aspx), that way you can try it out without dishing out too much. You can even buy a sample of the original vintage formula.
Oh, btw, the bottle is simply stunning, reminiscent of greek red-figure pottery. Gold figures on black lacquer background. I'd buy it just for that. ;)

I've complained before that Chanel #5 turns to baby powder scent on me, but I recently found Prada's Infusion d'Iris and I think it might be my substitute! Smells light, so it's more of a summer scent, but for some reason it isn't flowery. I hate flowery scents! It's nice and complex, not sweet.

Fragrances smell different from person to person and some unfortunate people will experience that the same fragrance (without reformulation - I strongly dislike Tom Ford!:offtopic: ) will smell differently on them at different times. What season you wear a fragrance in might make a difference too. So Arpege might work for you but not for me and it may smell like a day fragrance on some but be more of an occassion fragrance on others. Some may be able to wear it year round and others will find that it smells best on them at certain times of the year.
There are several online fragrance shops. I haven't tried any yet but I want to buy some miniature sets so I can shift around more frequently and get a real feel for a fragrance before I buy it.

Shrinking Violet, I can't wait to try the scents you got from Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab (http://www.blackphoenixalchemylab.com/welcome.html)!
I just got my Jicky sample, and oh wow, the civet here is much more flattering on me than the one in Narcisse Noir! My impression is that the civet is more integrated with all the other scents. Jicky is much more citrusy fresh and not as sweet as Narcisse Noir, and I think these things lift the civet up and make it less sickening - on me, anyway. All the woody notes make it very, very unisex, which I really like. Lovely!

Dancing Sweetie, how long-wearing is Fracas on you? I have a sample of it, and while I love it to bits it only lasts about 10 minutes on me! Maybe it's a new formula. I was a bit disappointed with Chanel Gardenia, it didn't seem very vintage-y to me. Just sweet fluffiness like many contemporary scents. Did they change the original formula?
Laura Chase, I believe there's a BPAL thread floating around here somewhere. I'll post some reviews there.
Sorry if I go a bit :offtopic: but does anyone know if you can get samples of some of the more vintage perfumes online? We live in the high desert and the stores near by don't always carry the brands I'm looking for (Macy's of all places, and I'd kill to have a Sephora within 2 hours of me). Call me cheap but I don't want to spend $40 on perfume only to find I don't like it. Plus I'm really bad at figuring out the scents by the "top notes" and such so I'm a bit helpless unless I can sniff it.

I don't blame you. I wouldn't put anything on that I haven't smelled first. I find most old perfmes stink...just me maybe. They are just too strong.
My mom use to wear Chantilly and Emeraude and I never liked them, I felt they made her smell older than she is. Monroe may have liked Chanel, but I can't hack it. With that said, everyones' smeller is different. I know that Emeraude and Chantilly can be found in any drug store.

I just discovered these solid perfumes from Infiore (http://www.infiore.net/shop5.php) - they seem really practical yet luxurious to carry around. Neroli and jasmine are two of my favourite notes, but does anyone know what Oud is?
http://www.infiore.net/images/ps/PS-m.jpg
Yes, I have an oud perfume from another perfumer. It is an expensive oil from India, but popular in the Arab world. Here's the Wikipedia on it:
Agarwood (or just Agar) is the resinous heartwood from Aquilaria trees, large evergreens native to southeast Asia. The trees occasionally become infected with mold and begin to produce an aromatic resin in response to this attack. As the infection grows, it results in a very rich, dark resin within the heartwood.
The resin is commonly called gaharu, jinko, aloeswood, agarwood, or oud (not to be confused with 'Bakhoor') and is valued in many cultures for its distinctive fragrance, and thus is used for incense and perfumes.
It isn't a scent for everyone. It is a woody scent, similar to sandalwood or patchouli, but honestly, it is less pleasant and more masculine. To me, it is almost medicinal, but once I've worn it for a hour or so, it is okay and I like it. I have "oudh roses" or something like that, and it is feminine enough, but if you are looking for a nice floral, keep looking.

Ouds are YUMMY....I know the rose one you are talking about.
They work really well with my body chemistry. But I like anything with incense. My favorite right now is Chanel....Bois Des Iles. On me, it is all temple spice incense with a hint of powder.
I know that is a simple description, but I find it intoxicating. I do like the Arpege too, but it can be a bit much on me. I need to be careful with application. But that Chanel! Oh! I could bathe in it.

Oh, I wish I could wear the vintage fragrances! My mother wears *only* Chanel No. 5, but every time she does I have to flee the room. I'm new around here but have been reading with interest. I actually wear Emeraude all day, every day and layer other scents over the top depending on my mood. It is my understanding that the original Emeraude scent was reformulated at a later date (around the 50's) but I do like it. It is a vile green color though. I use a vintage bohemian glass atomizer. This means that I need to break the top of the bottle sometimes if I can't release the crimp.

Chanel No. 19 reminds me of my dearly departed aunt and every now and then I go by a perfume counter and stop to smell it and smile. :) Strange how scent can evoke feeling and memory.

On ocassion, I'll use Opium. I like it and it was given to me as a gift, but when I'm wearing it, I don't smell it and think "this is me".

It can be found here:http://www.highlandlilac.com/
as well as at the Vermont country store. Says it's been given to the past 11 First Ladies and it does have a slightly vintage feel to the packaging. The tester is $4 and shipping would be $2 which is kinda high just for a tester, but it does get good reviews on makeup alley.

BEAUTIFUL BOTTLES!!
You are probably reacting to the initial blast of adelhydes in the Chanel...alot of those 20s scents have this crazy alcohol "dazzle" at the beginning that you either love or hate. I used to hate it, but now I just can't get enough...I like them with a big old nose and then a sweet drydown. After I have been wearing Arpege, or Chanel 22 or Bois Des Iles for a few hours...that is when they get really good....even though I heart the blast, I do prefer the drydown. Another one that does it is Estee Lauder's Cinnabar (its from the 70s). After it dries down, it is all spicy warmth and goodness, but that first hit is a doozy.

I just discovered Jean Patou's Joy. While I only have the EDT, I do plan on upgrading to the EDP, though I hear the pure parfum is the only way to truly experience this fragrance.
I do know that some feel it smells old and dated...I prefer "classic!"

what a fun topic! and thanks a million for introducing me to the Perfumed Court. there have been so many vintage perfumes i've wanted to try, but am hesitant about purchasing "unsmelled". in the meantime, i'm a chanel no. 5 kinda girl. (at this count, though, i have about 48 different bottles of perfume!! yikes!)

I wear Chanel No.5. I love the way it smells on me.
Chanel No. 19 reminds me of my dearly departed aunt and every now and then I go by a perfume counter and stop to smell it and smile. :) Strange how scent can evoke feeling and memory.
Sometimes I wear Yardley's English Lavender. Though usually only if I shower at night or if I am stressed out as the lavender scent is quite calming and soothing for me.
I wore Chanel No. 5 for years but had to stop wearing it because it reminded me of bad relationship I was in when I still smelled it. And I still have a full bottle that I won't use:( Now I wear the moden Harajuku Lovers in Angel

I ordered a few more samples from the Perfumed Court which again arrived really quickly:
Rose Nuit de Chine by Paul Poiret
Nahema by Guerlain
Apres L'Ondee by Guerlain
Knize Ten
Rose Nuit de Chine was nice enough but the only one I really liked from the samples was Apres L'Ondee - the only problem is that it fades really quickly.

I don't understand it either Tess! I checked out people's reviews on Basenotes and everyone was raving about it. It's quite powdery on me too - not something I would be wild about. I think I much prefer perfumes with sandalwood and patchouli in them - more musky or something. I don't really like sweet powdery scents at all.

.
The most seductive perfume I've ever come across, and it's hardly been mentioned here at all:
.........................................CHANEL No. 19
A mesmerizing scent!
"Chanel No. 19 needs no words of praise because its beauty renders them superfluous. Its seemingly difficult facets—the aggressive verdancy of galbanum, the woody duskiness of iris—are arranged in such an exquisitely harmonious manner that one cannot but admire how the accords meld into each other, from the emerald dew of the top notes to the leathery suppleness of the base.
The number 19 refers to Coco Chanel's birthday, August 19th. No. 19 was created by the Chanel in-house perfumer Henri Robert, who is also responsible for the chypre austerity of Pour Monsieur (1955). Robert created only a few fragrances for the house; however, his contribution cannot be measured by the number of perfumes linked to his name. Being responsible for maintaining the quality of Chanel No. 5, searching out the best quality materials and adapting the formula for the parfum de toilette and eau de toilette, Robert has to be credited for the continuing success of No. 5. ...
And yet No. 19 remains a testament to his talent as an artist. It is said that upon approaching the Taj Mahal, one is teased by its ornate whiteness looming in the distance, until suddenly the magnificent edifice is right before one's eyes. In No. 19, the iris magically transports one from the soft luminosity of florals into the intensity of a leather-vetiver embrace. The elegance of No. 19 is underscored by the seductive allure of its seemingly chilly effect. A few rose de mai petals caught among moss covered roots conjure a passionate yearning constrained by feelings of decorum. At a time when women are encouraged to smell like chocolate covered confections, No. 19, with its strength and regal beauty, proves that femininity is not defined by 'sugar, spice and everything nice.' That being said, lacking sweetness or floral opulence, No. 19 would definitely be suitable for a man, especially in the EDT and EDP concentrations, where the accent falls upon the vetiver and leather. If I were to choose between concentrations, the EDT and the parfum would be my preferred picks, for the radiance of iris-vetiver and the richness of iris-leather, respectively.
Chanel No. 19 includes notes of galbanum, hyacinth, neroli, bergamot, jasmine, rose, lily of the valley, iris, vetiver, sandalwood, leather, musk."

I like no. 19 alot more than no. 5, but I don't like either of them enough to wear! Admittedly though I do lean towards creamy, subtle florals despite my obnoxious brashness. lol

^I've smelled Sillage de Reine. It's okay, a nice expensive floral, better than the 1800's Creeds, but not worth what they are charging for me.
I'll stick to my Creed "Jasmine Imperatrice Eugenie," "Fleurs de Bulgarie" (Queen Victoria) or "Fleurissmo" (Princess Grace) if I need to smell like a Queen.

I'm quite fascinated with the thought of (perhaps) being able to smell Marie Antoinette.
Recently I was in Croatia and there were so many plants there that had a heavenly scent. One tree in particular had the most wonderful blossoms. Can any of you tell me what type of blossom this is I don't know the least bit about botanics, but the combination of the scent of this little thing with the lovely pine trees everywhere would make an an amazing perfume!

Maybe someone else here would know for sure.

Medvssa, I believe you are spot on! After seeing your post, I searched for different types of pittosporum trees and I believe this is a pittosporum tobira.
Now, off to find perfumes that have this. I looked it up on Perfume Shrine, and the only one I found was Knowing by Lauder.
I wonder if it's kinda like orange blossom? I'm not familiar with the pure orange blossom smell, but the flowers look very alike.

I also only know another perfume that has it: Two Monsters (http://www.blackphoenixalchemylab.com/salon.html) by BPAL (scroll down somewhat, reviews (http://www.bpal.org/index.php?showtopic=24443)) :
Oakmoss, vetiver, black musk, champaca flower, leather, patchouli, ginger, Japanese pittosporum, ambergris and white pepper.
It is a quite dark perfume, though, maybe a bit masculine (I like to wear masculine perfumes though). I could smell the pittosporum, but there a lot of other dark and strong notes in it, so I really wouldn't say it dominates [huh]
I don't know how that pittosporum you saw smells, but if it is anything like the ones I am used to (commonly used for hedges in Spain), I find it different, the pittosporum seems more buttery to me, if that makes any sense, while the orange blossom is more tangy. The two trees are not related.
Although, well, I hear that they also call it Mock Orange. This may also have to do with how orange blossom (neroli) reacts on different people's skin, on some it is more flowery and rosy, on others more citussy [huh]

I must share. I was in Scottsdale at Saks on Saturday and came across the most delightful fragrance. I was utterly surprised that I like it so much!
Chanel No. 5 Eau Premiere.
Absolutely amazing! I'm not a huge No. 5 fan, but this I had to have!
The jasmine comes through much more clearly for me in this fragrance, but much less powdery than the original. No aldehydes at all (No. 5 top note, No. 22 top note), although I do not mind aldehydes. This reinterpretation is phenomenal, much more wearable for my personality. I do love classics, I adore Jean Patou Joy, but I could never quite get on the No. 5 band wagon. Eau Premiere did that for me.
I purchased both the EDP (2.5 oz I believe) and a No. 5 body lotion. I'm all about layering my scents.
If you are in any way a Joy or No. 5 fan, you simply must try No. 5 Eau Premiere!

"My Sin" is so amazing - Your hubby has good taste!
My favourite is Chanel's Coco Mademoiselle. It's not vintage, but its a sweeter version of N°5, although still very floral. The difference is the orange top notes.
As for vintage, Mitsouko is my favourite. It was Jean Harlow's perfume of choice, and Paul Bern allegedly doused himself with it before he died.

I have a fun little book called The Bombshell Manual of Style that I absolutely love and it has a little section on perfumes. It also lists what real life bombshell used the perfume. For example it has Jayne Mansfield using My Sin. I've always wondered what these perfumes smelled like so it's neat to read this thread. My favorite perfume is Chanel Allure, but the book says a bombshell would never wear that Chanel fragrance because it's too girlish [huh] It's still my favorite!

My favorite is Coty's L'Origan. I've been quite fortunate to find several large bottles of it around town at flea markets and estate sales. In the winter I like Je Reviens, which was introduced in 1932, and Tabu. It is a fairly strong scent so I don't wear it often.

A while back I purchased perfume samples form The Perfumed Court (mentioned earlier in this thread). My favorites are: Lanvin's My Sin, Guerlain's Jicky, and Balmain's Vent Vert. These are impossible to buy in Sweden (they don't have many vintage scents here except for the Chanel ones).
Luckily for me, my little pop band A Smile and a Ribbon is going on a mini-tour in May with dates on the East Coast and one in Canada (click my signature if you're interested, more dates to come!). I probably won't have much time for shopping since we'll be travelling and performing every day, though we might have some spare time in NYC. We'll also visit Boston, Burlington, and Montreal.

Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom's, and Saks Fifth Avenue are department stores that all have Guerlain perfumes, and all of them would probably carry Jicky. If you're going to be in NYC though, I'd say your best bet would be to go Bergdorf Goodman, as they are supposed to have a really fabulous Guerlain counter! I saw (and tried) Vent Vert when I was in Sephora in Paris. So, it is still being made. There are online stores like Amazon that carry it too.
It is getting harder and harder to find classic perfumes. However, some of the better department stores still stock some of the good ones. Sometimes though, formula changes mean that you aren't getting the same thing as the original, so to experience the scent as intended you would need to find a vintage bottle in good condition.

One that I've always wanted to try is Nuit de Noel, from 1922. The Vermont Country Store offers it but it's a bit more than I'd like to spend right now.
Currently my fancy-schmancy perfume (for special occasions) is Coco, from Chanel. It only dates back to the 1980s but after a sniff test, it was my favorite of all the Chanel fragrances.
I'm with fortworthgal: I also love L'Origan, the Coty fragrance that scents Airspun face powder to this day. I still have half a bottle (for the fancy occasions that don't get Coco! lol )
An oldie but always a goodie: Murray & Lanman Florida Water. From 1908!
(My every-day cologne is lavender body splash. From Kmart. Not very vintage! :p )

Actually Lavender body splash sounds really vintage to me. That is the sort of thing my grandmother or great-grandmother would have worn.
I went through a Nuit de Noel mania last September. I bought a bottle of it at a vintage store. I've seen it at mall perfume shops and online stores for substantially less than what Vermont Country Store charges. I don't think that anyone is counterfeiting this one so it is probably safe to buy online. I wouldn't do that with Coco Mademoiselle or No. 5, everyone is faking that.
If you feel that you need to try it, you can try buying a sample at theperfumedcourt.com so you don't need to spend a fortune to buy a bottle that might not suit you. Not that I can imagine Nuit de Noel not suiting you.
There are other vintage perfumes, like Guerlain's Djedi that I can't imagine suiting anyone. Djedi smells like spit to me.

White Shoulders is 1945. It used to be available in every drug store in the country for a good price, but it may be declining in popularity. You should be able to get it at Wal-Mart still.
It is pretty nice for the price as I recall, I think many of you would like it, though I haven't smelled it in years.
It seems that Elizabeth Arden has bought rights to it from Evyan. ??

I don't think its supposed to be too hard to find, but then, I haven't tried yet. :o
I saw it in Big Lots, Kmart and most of the other discount stores/drugstores I went to over the December holidays. You should be able to find it still! I've never smelled it, but it's described as honeysuckle.
What a lovely idea for your wedding. :)

I think that's a lovely idea! My mom wore White Shoulders when I was growing up. One of those smells that definitely takes me back to my childhood. :)
I'm a perfume ADDICT, but (sadly) haven't had much experience with vintage perfumes... I do love Chanel No 5, but it's so expensive to keep on hand. I used to wear Chantilly when I was younger. I had a bottle a couple years ago, and I liked it still, but it's not exactly my favourite any more. I want to get a bottle of either Bellodgia or Arpege next month, but I'm not sure which to get. I don't like perfumes that are too heavy. Any thoughts? Thanks!

White Shoulders! That does bring back memories... my gram still wears it on special occasions, and she's had a bottle in her bathroom for as long as I can remember. The scent will remind me of her for as long as I live :) I wish I could dig up her high school portrait - she graduated in '48 and was a knock out!

I have found small bottles of at least two Dana classics at the 99 cent store.
Perfect price point for trying them out and/or wearing them just to vintage events...
Toujours Moi: DESIGN HOUSE - Dana
YEAR INTRODUCED - 1921
FRAGRANCE NOTES - sandalwood and vetiver, with a floral touch and musky undertones.
Tabu: DESIGN HOUSE - Dana
YEAR INTRODUCED - 1932
FRAGRANCE NOTES - rich rose, orange blossom, jasmine, vetiver, oakmoss, amber and musk.
RECOMMENDED USE - romantic
Admittedly Tabu is not everyones cup of tea...but used -sparingly- its quite nice..(on me it is at least)
and for 99 cents....its worth trying...
and on that same note...fragrancenet.com is super for giving dates of introduction of perfumes and is thus perfect for the 'when did my favorite come out' research...

Miss Neecerie, I tried your link http://www.fragrancenet.com and it said Vent Vert was introduced 1990, I'm confused.

I like heavy scents at times, yet vanilla, carnation, clove and cinnamon are not light, and those are the notes in Bellodogia. The scent is nice, and soft, but a little heavy to me, but then I am not a huge fan of carnation perfumes. My huge bottle of Carnation toilet water has been sitting there for years. You might do better with this than me, since you like Chantilly. Still, I would sample this one before buying it if you since you aren't in to heavier scents.
I've heard Arpege described as dark too, but I don't really find it too heavy because of the aldehyde notes. I just now sprayed my vintage Arpege on my wrists, and it is stronger than I remember, but then this bottle is 20+ years old (but still light yellow in color). Since you like No. 5 you might like Arpege too, but it is definitely not to modern tastes.
I would like to get the modern Eclat de Arpege for summer myself, even though I usually wear vintage perfumes.
Edit: there are two Vent Verts, one 1947, and re-orchestrated in 1990. I guess I tried the 1990 version.
Plus I agree with Neecerie, Tabu is a good perfume for the money, but a little strong, dab lightly.

White Shoulders. my gram kept it on her dressing table along with the powder & puff. ahh the memories!
I bought a bottle last fall after years...... and the memories it brings back ;)
isn't it amazing how our sense of smell is powerful enough to evoke memories? on the other hand I must confess, there are fragrances that I dare not smell for they would bring on VERY :( painful memories.

Toubillion, I'd admire your knowledge! You should work as a Nose at one of the fine perfume labels (if you don't already)! I love the term re-orchestrated. I know they're not exactly the same, but how different are two perfumes allowed to be that bear the same name? In terms of top/middle/base notes?
After discussing it further with him, my fiancé insists I try the Arpege, so that's the one I will purchase. I certainly hope it's worth it to both of us! :D

Thanks, but a real nose would know a lot more than me...
Usually the same company owns the rights to the name, so they can change the formula if they want to. Unfortunately, they often change the formula so it will be cheaper, and the result smells cheaper too. I did like the new Vert Vent though, I am not sure about the original. I suppose it could have been better, but it may be a while before I track down the original.
However, there was a change in the laws in the EU that means that many perfumes have to change their formulas because of allergens. This may be good for those who suffer allergies, but it sucks for everyone else. I'd prefer a warning label instead.
I compiled a list of many vintage fragrances which are still available for purchase:
Caron
Narcisse Noir (1911)
Nuit de Noel (1922)
Bellodgia (1927)
Pois de Senteur de Chez Moi (1927)
Fleur de Rocaille (1933)
Muget du Bonheur (1952)
Chanel
No. 5 (1921)
No. 22 (1922 - official site says 1925, but it might be a typeo)
Cuir de Russie (1925)
Gardenia (1925)
Bois des Iles (1926)
Coty
Emeraude (1921)
Dana
Toujours Moi (1921)
Tabu (1932)
Chantilly (1941)
Ambush (1955)
Estee Lauder
Youth Dew (1952)
Estee (1968)
Guerlain
Jicky (1889)
Mitsouko (1919)
Shalimar (1925)
Vol de Nuit (1933)
Chant D'Aromes (1962)
Lanvin
Arpege (1927)
Nina Ricci
L'Air du Temps (1948)
Patou
Joy (1930)
Revlon
Jean Nate (1935)
I... have two obsessions: perfume and red lipstick. lol

There are reviews of it on basenotes.net here: http://www.basenotes.net/ID10211920.html
It seems to be sweet, vanilla and powdery. It used to be sold at Woolworth's 5 and dime in the USA.
Basenotes is my secret source for information on perfumes. Appy would probably love the discussion forum too. I especially like the search by year function.

Just a heads up....a fantastic fragrance from Caswell Massey is back on the market- CASMA!
http://www.caswellmassey.com/assets/item/regular/Casma_perf_web.jpg
It was one of Carole Lombard's favorite scents!
A mix of rose, jasmine and magnolia touched with vanilla and silken musk blended to create a sophisticated and feminine scent.

My husband bought me a bottle of Joy - it's our special perfume for date nights! I love it!
I used to wear Arpege - I never much liked it but it was given to me as a gift. And I had a cat at the time who loved it. It was like catnip for him. He'd rub his face all over my neck and wrists and purr and then go floppy. Crazy animal!
I love gardenia and jasmine scents - is Chanel Gardenia a really pure scent?

There are some white flower notes in Chanel's Gardenia and some vanilla, but it doesn't have any weird notes. Since you like Joy you'll probably like it.
You might check out Fracas too, it is a tuberose scent that is really pretty. I can't wear it myself, but it is beautiful on one of my friends.

I love this description, it made me go out an buy a bittle. I love the initial smell but when it dries it smells a bit like Laiment by Coty on me. I wear Crystal Noir by versace daily- it's not vintage but it is lovely!

Totally not a vintage maker, but an interesting scent for those into the tiki thing: Harajuku Lovers G smells like Polynesian drinks. Kind of like a headhunter. I love it for summer. Both the perfume and the drink... ;)

So i went to the Guerlin counter and held the bottle of Mitsouko lovingly in my hands- i liberally sprayed my wrists with the fragrance and......Oh my God! It was awful - it had those base notes that Joop has- it made me feel physically sick- I was so gutted as i really wanted to love it, especially since Calypso in the Camomile Lawn wears it.
I liked Vol de Nuit but funnily it smells almost exactly like the chilli vodka I make- even my husband said so!

I don't really get all the Mitsouko fuss, but I've only tried it in the EDT concentration. Vol de Nuit is one of my favorites though. The extrait is heavenly but out of my budget at the moment. That must be some chili vodka! ;)
This may have already been mentioned as I didn't go back and read all 5 yrs worth of posts in this thread but, The Perfumed Court has a lot of rare and vintage perfumes and sells decants of them so literly anyone can afford at least a little of anything. You want to be careful with this type of site but this one has an execellent reputation for honesty.

Mitsouko sometimes smells great on me, and at other times really smells "off". Some other perfumes do this on me, they "change" from wearing to wearing, I also get sick of some after a while.
The worst offender for me, Guerlain's Djedi smells like my spit. It is the only perfume I ever got terrible comments about from my boyfriend (and I wear weird ones and odd vintage ones), and he agrees that it smells like I have been licking my wrists. I need to work on my really bad review for basenotes, right now it has all positive reviews and I feel that I need to warn people how nasty this stuff really is so they do not end up wasting $40 on a 1 ml decant of spit like I did. Yuck!

I've seen Djedi sell for sky-high prices on Ebay; after reading this, I'm guessing that has more to do with the rarity than the actual scent!

I am hoping someone can recomend a fragrance for me to try- i'f like to find a signature scent. I use Cyrstal Noir at the moment- but Id like somethign a bit more sophisticated. I'd liek an oriental/ floral-oriental fragramce- I've tried Mitsouko (hated- think it's the tobacco), Shalimar, Poison and Palmoa Picaso (dislike intensely). Can't remember trying Opium though. I like Arpege but would like something muskier, deeper and warmer- but not too 'masculine'. I like 1920's Vamps if that helps. Here are some clues which might help:
I like:
Vanilla- but not too much
Sharp smells- aldehydes
Incense/ Frankincse
Musky smells
Woody smells
Floral smells but not overtly lavender or rose etc.
I dislike:
Fruit/ citrus e.g peach
Food smells e.g. orange
neroli
Lilly of the valley
Tobacco
Leather
Thanks in advance if anyone has any suggestions.

Trish,
Since you don't like leather, tobacco and lily of the valley, and already ruled out Shalimar, Arpege and Mitsouko, you have eliminated many of the 20's vamp scents already.
Avoid Tabac Blond, Habanita, En Avion and Chanel's Cuir de Russie, as they have the offending leather or tobacco notes. BTW, these are some of the most vamp-like scents still available today. They are however, some of my favorites, so if anyone out there likes leather and tobacco, check these out.
There aren't many left for you to try now, but here are a few. Some are hard to find, but at least they aren't discontinued like most 20's scents. I only listed scents originated between 1915 and 1930 for this list.
Orientals
Emeraude
My Sin (Lanvin)
Woodies
Bois des Iles (Chanel)
Florals
Gardenia (Chanel)
Chanel No. 5
If you include the 30's there is Tabu and Shocking too, but these are more difficult scents to wear (especially Shocking, I like Tabu personally though). There just aren't many vampy scents left. There are others that are from the 20's but I am not sure that they were for vamps, like Blue Waltz, Red Roses, Nuit de Noel, Tweed and Evening in Paris. I can't imagine vamping it up in Tweed or Red Roses, you know? You might like Blue Waltz, since it is a vanilla (once the lemon goes away, I haven't tried this one though) but it seems like a nice girl scent to me.
Since you seem to like more modern perfumes too, you might consider sniffing out Must de Cartier, it is musky with vanilla. Since you like incense, you might try to track down Creed's recently discontinued Angelique Encens (1933), it is really vampy.

This is my all-time favorite; I still lament its discontinuation. It's available at the Perfumed Court, but I think they raised the price a lot when it was taken off the market. I recently tried Montale's Blue Amber, which I thought had a definite resemblance to AE. It doesn't have the history of Angelique Encens, but it would be cheaper/more readily available at this point in time.

Oh dear..I have a rather large collection of perfume, mostly vintage brands, but my favorites are:
Quelques Fleurs (For eighter going out or just because I really like to smell it all the time) - This is one of the perfumes my grandmother used and it was the first perfume I got, a bottle from my grandmother :)
Chloé ( this I usually wear in the summer..) - Also from my grandmother.
Champagne/Yvresse - Another of my going out perfumes. I used this as a teenager and then I just stopped wearing it when it changed name but I "rediscovered" it a few years ago.
Arpege - This I bought only because of my love for the late 20s, I do not wear it often but when I do,I love it!
Angelique Encens - For those very special moments ;)
Joy - This I wear a lot actually, at home or out shopping.
Shalimar - mostly at home, I always wear perfume..FYI :p
..and a lot more but those are the favorites.
