I've always been a non black hat fan. The black hat Just wasn't me... In my mind the hat had that villanous connetation when paired with a suit. The look also brings to mind religions and I'm not much of a religious man.

Putting the hat on and pairing it with the right suit seems to have made me change my mind. Now I'm wearing it whenever I get the chance.

The hat was a gift from MK and I think the dimentions are perfect. i might even order a repro in grey from Art.

Check it out... the black hat. vintage Stetson.

high crown short brim with a narrow bound edge and a 2" wide ribbon.

I guess I might get along well with the villians. :)

Looks good on you too, especially next to red. ;)

I think I could only be convinced to wear a homburg in black. Maybe one of these days I'll come around.

AlanC, I couldn't agree with you more. It's actually the only black hat I own to date. A vintage Black Homburg Brodt's, that I acquired from our very own Dinerman, a very classy hat indeed.

Having seen the photo....I think this size brim looks better on you.

Matt Deckard

Agreed... My long face isn't a fan of the wide brim ... though there are always acceptions. I look acceptionally good in cowboy hats.

Great hat, Matt.

Remember the deep black fedora William Powell wore with dinner suit in Libeled Lady? Trying to find a pic.

I always loved the villains in the movies - they always have the sharpest tailoring ;) - and I'm a religious boy in real life, so black hats suit me down to the ground, heh. Black goes with just about everything, plus it's slimming.... suits my fat head! :p I'm looking forward to organising myself with a few more fedoras in various olive / brown / grey / navy shades to match different outfits. I'm a real one for colour coordination when I can manage / afford it.

The shorter brim definitely suits you more than the Indy brims now that your face has slimmed down dramatically. You have a Bogartesque length to it, and those proportions complement you very welll. :eusa_clap

it's most definitely black, by the way.

Although black hats are the number one color that we sell, black is still the biggest selling color in the dress market as well. Stetson and Biltmore tell us that this is the number one color sold in all oftheir markets. I am sure that many retailers would agree as well. This was not the case years ago as gray and brown were more important but times have changes.

Hi all! im new to the forum. nice to meet you!

Matt, could you tell me whats the size of your hat brim in cm? Since in japan we use only metrical values, i have no idea about inches, need to learn it:)

thanks

The only thing that bothers me about my black hat is that it seems to attract every speck of light-colored lint and such within a twenty foot radius. I need to find a good, vintage gal that will be willing to carry a travel lint brush in her bag for me.:D

Rule of thumb: multiply inches by 2.5 to get the equivalent in cm. 1"=25mm

I picked up an original black fedora from the 30s, but gave it to a friend a few years ago. I preferred wearing my gray Stetson fedora, which has a slight blue cast, with my blue pin-stripe suits. Now I wish I had it back, because I think it would look great with my black tuxedo. Live and learn.

I rather like the black Dobb I got a little while back. It happens to look great with my brown tweed J. Peterman jacket. It makes for a fairly European look, something alpine. The hat itself has sort of a bluish hue to it. It definitely dresses up any outfit.

Cheers!

I agree with you Steven, which is exactly why I added the Camptown Metropolitan in Super Black to my line today.

I have gotten many requests for it, so the "Noir" Model has arrived.

Any questions on it, please emailcamptownhats@yahoo.com me or PM me.

Enjoy the mystery of the man in the black hat !

Well, I think I've stated earlier in this thread that the only black hat I own is a Vintage Homburg Brodt's, purchased from our own DM a while back, but I recently just stumbled across this Stetson that I couldn't let go by for $10. [huh] Stetson (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=005&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&viewitem=&item=150139988522&rd=1&rd=1)

I didn't get it yet, so this is the only picture I have to go by.

I see a lot of the young guys and the rockers, those who wear the stingy brims, wearing black hats.

I have a Stetson OR that has been fashioned to look like a fedora not an LBJ hat. It is the neatest hat.

Matt you look good in that hat, but you do not look like the bad guy, sorry to tell you. Villainous is in the attitude, maybe with just a little more of an ornery look....

The only Black Hat that I own is the Stetson Soverign shown in my avatar. It's one of my favorites and fits very well. It's a Homburg with a 2 1/2" Brim, Crown height of 4", and a center dent. It has a wide black band and a banded rim. It's unlined but still too heavy for all but the coolest weather in Dallas. It seems to me that a shorter crown height works better for me even though I really like the higher classic crowns.
The tag inside reads 80891 so I'm guessing it was made in 1991.
This hat was originally sold by a store whose name begins, 'Byrnie ltz' (?) on Union Street in Seattle.

You know, it occurs to me that, while we often discuss the relative pros and cons of black hats, I can't find any threads that are really a show-case for them. So, in the spirit of other hat-type societies on the lounge, I invite you to join the The Black Hat Brigade!

Share your love of black hats by showing us what you've got. Being a freshly minted black hat lover, I present my current collection;

the only thing you have to watch out for more than other hats is lint and dust! I'll pull my black hat off the rack and about be out the door before I realize my hat is covered in dust! Anyway, black is a good color (or lack thereof) and it matches well with about anything. My fiancee finds it attractive too :D

Although many people seem to consider black a versatile colour for fedoras, I am not of the same mind, and I certainly do not think that they really go with everything. This said, it is a felt colour worthy of having in the rotation too.

Posted this in new hats. Picked it up several months ago, but haven't worn it much yet. Plan to this winter. It is incredibly soft. The brim is almost too soft and probably some steam to bring its stiffening properties back out. For me a 2 1/2" brim and brim binding are as close to a perfect hat as it gets. This is my only black fedora and though I am not necessarily sold on how I look with it on, my wife says it is one of her favorites.

My reply, “my dad told me to never talk to strangers”. Think I posted the same in the “comments” thread. But, what the heck.

If your wife says that's one of her favourites then she must have good taste. I rarely like black fedoras (bowlers, homburgs and toppers are a different thing altogether for me) but that looks amazing. Some women give rubbish style advice, but your wife evidently isn't one of them so listen to her opinion.

I thought I'd better get around to posting my black hats here. I have two. The first I call Major Mike Moore's The Black. When it's on my head I'm dressed up. This is the one that caused me to call Mike in the first place. It's the one that changed my mind about black hats. I thought black felt would be a headache, collecting all sorts of lint. Truth is, it does, but when it's all brushed up it sure looks good to me.

http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn102/bkcross/IMG_0528.jpg

My second black hat is a Whippet. I'd never seen a black Whippet before, but I have noticed a few since. This one came to me from the bay, clean as a pin.

With that liner and that black sweatband, I can't see it being anywhere past the early '40s.

Black sweatbands are more commonly associated with the '60s, but in that time period they were narrow and generally textured. That dobbs has an unreeded wide sweatband with the widely spaced, deeply embossed top edge associated with pre '40s hats. You generally don't see the blind embossed logo beyond that point either. The liner with the store name printed on it also says '30s to me.

I've definitely never before seen a Dobbs or any other US-made hat from that time period with a black sweat. I guess there is a first time for everything. The one thing that really made me wonder about the age is the fact that the sweatband is unreeded.

Hate to disagree with you, D-man, as I have nothing but the utmost respect for you!:)

However...The blind embossed logo lasted throughout the '40s. By the early '50s it was stamped in gold, and was replaced by the gold coach logo around '54.

The tags inside Steve's hat were in use by Hat Corporation of America during the '40s.

At least until the late-'30s, Dobbs used their older-style tags, as seen here:
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/jbbowers/Tags.jpg
They changed to the more modern tag in the '50s sometime, but I realized I don't have a photo of one, even though I've got many hats with them!

The sweatband seam is stitched, and by the late'-30 they were still taped.

That particular liner appears to have been used only on hats branded for the stores, an economical way to create a customized liner in small quantities.

Actually, I should have given credit in the first place, but Brad Bowers estimated its age as 1940s previously. That was my main basis for thinking it was from the 1940s.

Now that's what I like about this place. I really learn somethin new all the time (now if I could only remember...). I've read about the pre-60's use of black sweatbands but have never before seen one in person. I've come across a few gray sweats in older (20's and 30's) hats, but never any blacks. Thanks for clarifying. :)

My Akubra Sydney (AKA "Fedora") is technically charcoal in color, but I think that's close enough to true black to qualify.

Though most here are familiar with this hat, here's a pic and description: http://www.davidmorgan.com/product_info.php?products_id=92.

Though I now wear this lid the least of my fur felt fedoras, it was the hat that re-started my lifelong love affair with them, and the one that turned me on to Fedora Lounge.

And that's a good thing.

Oh, back in the day they weren't so rare. Especially on German/Austrian hats dating from the 20's/30's they were rather standard.
Of course, these days they've become so rare as not too many of those old hats have survived the firestorms of WWII, but that's actually a general problem with vintage wardrobe here in Germany. Clothes are so easily burned...

Ultra Black and even has a funeral band to cover the ribbon.
Has a dark brown sweatband, but I do have a 1930's Mossant with a black sweatband which has dark brown felt.[huh]

What is a funeral band?

New to me:

Another pretty old, velour-finished hat, probably from the late 20's or early 30's. I'm not really sure about the name of the manufacturer, but I'll just call it the G.J.M.

Crown (creased): 4 7/8"
Brim: 2 3/8"
Ribbon: 2"

Darn Mario, I'm gonna have to buy a new keyboard now - your hat is making me drool! -M

Black fedoras are a bit too severe for me. When I had facial hair, I was more than once mistaken for a more religious fellow than I am, and that was while wearing other-than-black fedoras.

Black westerns, otoh, I do like. Here are two of my favorites.

I've recently added a black to my stable, a Manhattan fedora with a 5" crown, wide ribbon, and 2 3/8" brim. The eBay seller told me it was from the '50s, and with a price tag of $7.50, I can well believe it. I hope to have pics soon. (Posting here isn't as much fun unless you post shots of your hats.)

Anyhow, it fits well with a little padding under the sweatband, and after a brushing and brim shaping, it's a sharp lid -- it looks like the one of Bogart in white tie posted above. I'm going to call it my "Roy Earle" hat!

I'm rather annoyed by the place I bought it from (Thrift Store in the UK). No appreciation for vintage hats or many other items for that matter. They punctured the lining with the plastic price tag!! They had a beautiful homburg too from the same era (I'd imagine from the same Estate), but they had punctured right through the velvet with the damned plastic price tagger!!! So many great shirts I've had to just leave because they do the same thing (some indescriminate neandrathol trigger happy price tagger!!).

I'm heavily considering a black hat for my next western. It will most likely be a telescope crown with a curl all the way around, with a contrasting ribbon, although I'm also considering an Old West style derby or homburg.

I really like the effect of a black hat with a camel ribbon, like the color scheme of Jaxonbilts "Elko #2" (http://jaxonbilthats.com/hatshop/14_elko2.htm). There's also the classic combination of black with a mid-to-light grey.

While I'm gathering the funds, I'll be doing some research into what contrasting colors seem to intensify or mute the intensity of the black color. As this will be a casual hat, I don't want it to be too dark.

We were watching the Thin Man again last night (that movie never gets old) and now that I'm a black hat owner I was noticing how many there were in the movie. Lt. Guild wears one throughout, so does the gigolo boyfirend (a Homburg I think) and other extras. Even Nick wears one with a light colored trenchcoat going to the warehouse with Asta. I was always under the impression that black hats were for more formal situations. In 1934 that was definately not the case. I'd like to see photos of Loungers wearing their black hats in non-formal situatiuons to get some style tips that I can emulate. Thanks.

Either that was merely a movie convention, or it reflects general use. Either way, the light hat-dark hat pairing is a good idea, sort of like light suit-dark suit variety, and light tie-dark tie variety.

Lefty,
I've gotten some great hats from the Amish over the years.
When I was in Indian Wars living history, that is where I'd get the hats I'd make into by officer grade campaign and dress hats. They were really tough and great looking.

Before I got my black Squatter, I was seriously looking at ordering a 3-inch brim Amish dress hat from Gohn Brothers ... fur felt, of course.

I recently lucked into a black Schott leather flight jacket and my black Squatter goes great with it.

Sort of a Noir Indy thing ... except I flatter myself

Do we have an Amish hat thread? It's something that has piqued my interest as of late.
I fished this one up a few weeks ago and am kind of entranced by the black felt paired with the charcoal-ish trim. It's made by Flying Cloud Hats of Lancaster County, PA.
Nothing specifying the material, but I can say, though it is very thick felt (almost 1/8") and stiff, the finish is much, much softer than my other wools, comparing it to both the stiff western weight ones, and the thinner wool fedora.
I'm led to believe that this company still exists and makes both fur and wool hats. Is anyone familiar with the company?

Very nice additions.

Steve, I think you could mount a beautiful thread just of black velour.

Mike, it's a guesstimate, but the character of the wide sweatband, imprints, liner and old style mfg. sticker lead me to 1930s for the black Borsalino (http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?59627-The-Bounty-of-the-Costume-Shop&p=1331336&viewfull=1#post1331336).

Some really wear them beautifully.

Did you notice all the hat carriers that were given out? I would imagine they were donated by Bencraft Hatters in Brooklyn.

I've posted it before, but here's my Peschel Homburg.

There's just something about a homburg. They seem to go with everything - they can be worn formally or, very casually, as in this picture, with a white t-shirt, old waistcoat and jeans.
For me they're the last 'older style' hats that aren't perceived by others as 'fancy dress' hats - something that can afflict tophats and bowlers.

And I love the more curved brim on mayserwegener's Bors' above. It reminds me a bit of one of my favourite hats - Tony Hancock's:
http://img.thesun.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00963/TonyHancock_682x400_963214a.jpg

Here's my other hommie. Unlike my Peschel the felt is so soft on this one that if I just nudge the crown the crease/dent will hold for as long as I want it to. Very flexible.

Hi

I saw those and was kind of wondering why? I mean don't Orthodox Jews wear the black hats pretty much all day every day? The pictures even show them eating dinner wearing the hats, which isn't the "Hat Etiquette" I'm aware of.

On a side note, I'm starting to wonder why I even wear a hat, I mean it's only 25 yards from the car to the door at work, I have a garage with a working opener. Yes, I take my hat off when I go in pretty much anything with a door and a roof.

later Y'all

The Hassidim mens heads are covered inside at functions and during service at the synagogue and yes even when eating diner. It is THEIR religious "Etiquette" which is different from Gentiles. When I went to my friends daughters wedding, and they were Hassidim, I kept my hat on all during the service and at the reception and dinner while eating. It's a whole differnt world than ours. As for the hat carriers, many of the men have a hat that they wear just for the Sabbath and probably take it with them when traveling so an item like this would be quite convenient :)

Hey, thanks for the info. I went to college with a lot of Jewish guys from the Chicago area. (I used to know say 500 Jewish American Princess jokes...) I didn't know any Orthodox Jews though. I was thinking (of course) of how I would do it. If my religion required me to wear a black hat every day, I would probably have 3 at any given time. The old one to do yard work in, the daily wear one, and a new "backup" one in case the daily wear one gets damaged. I probably wouldn't need a case.

For Hassidim, wide brim black fedoras are just the tip of the iceberg. On Shabbat, it's the shtreimel.

And most, if not all, of them are wearing yarmulkas under their hats. At least that's what I have experience in Orthodox temples during services.

Yes it is! Dinerman had it at one point (still original), then it went to Dazzer (I think thats the story), and well... this happened. The sweat he installed is nice, but the hat bands he picks to use are well... interesting to say the least!

I have purchased two hats from Dazzerdog, before he learned about a source for replacement of ribbons/hat bands...both hats were in fantastic condition and he was very honest in everything listed about the hats I purchased. I have no idea why he puts such "bulky" hat bands or ribbons in them, but he does sell hats so someone must like the look?!? I would not hesitate to purchase from him again, if he had something I liked in my size.

I did a web search and found Bernie Utz, in Seattle. He doesn't have a web site so I had to call him and give him my credit card number on the phone.
