Thanks so much! It was great to meet you and Ben at the '07 QM, were you able to make the '08? I'm still so disappointed I had to miss the last one I haven't been able to bring myself to look at the pictures yet.

Oh boy oh boy oh boy.
I am so excited about this i can hardly stand it. Must have lucked out on on the price of this on ebay...it was not really listed properly, which was to my benefit.

It is "The Art and Craft of Hairdressing" from 1936.
600+ pages of hair cutting/perming info, shampoo and oil recipes, manicure and makeup tips, men's hair and mustache grooming info, how to set up your own hair salon, etc etc etc.

I am freaking out.

There are a couple more on there (one of which I snagged the pickies from). As soon as I get it, I will share some more information. I wasn't going to buy anything for awhile, but I just could not pass this up.

Miss Amelina what a terrific purchase!! I hope we get to see more of the book :)

As for me, I recently had a transaction with an ebay seller that got complicated (the pair of black shoes in the picture below needed a repair she had not noticed before listing and the repair was not to her satisfaction so she refunded me 100% - great seller!).

Because of the complication she gave me first chance at this lot of shoes. The red pair is from re-mix and the 3 tooled leather pairs are from the Olvera Street store that sells or used to sell (not sure, maybe someone in Los Angeles can update us) this style of shoe. Re-mix currently sells a tooled leather wedge for $236!!

Anyhow, I got the lot of 4 pairs for $100, free shipping. What a GREAT seller - now her closet is happier and so is mine!!! A little shoe polish and these will take me through my dance steps for a good long time. I think a shoe moratorium is now in order for 2009, though.

I just bought these two vintage display heads. I have two repros, but I've been wanting a real one for a long time. The one has been painted white with red lips, but the original paint is still underneath the white. Nail polish remover has taken off some of the white paint, but I might leave her as is.

Lighter fluid is really good for removing old paint as well.

It also works really well to remove price tags and labels that people stick on the covers of old books/papers/boxes. It removes the tag without ripping the cover/paper/cardboard and it dries quickly and doesn't leave a mark

These days, that's worth a lot! Good customer service - heck, even just polite customer service - is so rare, that when I experience it, I make sure to voice my appreciation and pass along the good experience to my friends.

Just received the replacement shoes for the ones that I originally got that were falling apart. Not only are these falling apart as well, but they've obviously been worn before. The bottoms are all scuffed, and the sides of the heels have rubbed together to form scratches. The scuffs on the sides of the heels look as though they've had shoe polish rubbed on them to try and make them less evident, but the polish is clearly visible as well.

I'm utterly disgusted. I've wasted almost a month trying to get a pair of wearable shoes from this company, and have nothing to show for it but shoddy quality. I will be calling them on Monday to get a full refund, and will not be doing business with them in the future.

Apparently, someone at the company was betting on your being both blind as a bat and stupid. Since you wanted those shoes for dancing and you don't have them, you can't really go dancing so now...;) , you have some free time to write negative reviews about their service and deceptive practices. Thanks for giving us the heads up on them.

I second this, Chie Mihara shoes are of superb quality and very comfortable! But I do agree that they are too expensive, and even more so in the US where they cost aprox. 20% more than in Europe. At a 75% sale, though, they are a bargain! :)

In order to feed my shoe hunger, I've become a pretty decent bargain hunter, but there is no bargain that I can find on Chie Miharas. However, here are couple of makers that do some decent knockoffs. Jeffrey Campbell is one and Miz Mooz is another. Miz Mooz (www.infinityshoes.com) has these two oxfords that are similar and affordable:

Both shoes are regularly priced at $99. The ones on the left are on sale for $39 and come in red, brown, black and blue.

The ones on the right are on sale for $69 and come in brown, tan, black and red.

My items should be here soon, so I promise to report back. There were a few others I wanted but I held back as they were similar to other items I have already. I just wish they also sold those accessories and hosiery and shoessssssssss

I love shoes, I realise they aren't really vintage but I think they follow the theme well. The tan pair I won on ebay for under $10 (AUS$) and the black and white shoes are my dream shoes and I chanced upon them yesterday when being fitted for another corset, they look lovely with everything

Just purchased these at Savers yesterday!

Turquoise necklace with floral clasp, $4.99:
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_5LtM8BNoD8I/SXdtQwi-biI/AAAAAAAAAiM/Tn7jI1oAtXA/s640/0121091336.jpg

And the big score, a 3-piece aurora borealis crystal jewelry set! $17 total. All the pieces had been separated, I had to dig through to find it all. Super exciting! Unfortunately it's hard to see the rainbow effect of the beads but it's very pretty in person.

well yeas the price was a little fresh ($120 AUS$) but they are all leather upper and sole...plus they are so divine, so hubby said "you take em baby".

...and for those who are into height...the tans are a 2.5 inch heel and the black & white pair are 3 inch.

I have a crystal set that is very similar to that that belonged to my late Aunt. It was a Christmas gift from her boss when she worked for Westinghouse in the early 60's in Manhattan. It was a very Mad Men office.

Lovely pieces all around! Miss_Bella_Hell, I am partial to aurora borealis pieces (well, crystal beads in general) - love set.

LauraKitty, how extraordinarily pretty, and such a lovely, soft, slightly unusual colour. Is the bodice lined or sheer?

SassyLindaB, love the shoes - looks like the mary janes, t-bars and oxfords are back again for the fall season! There's a shoe store next to the health food shop in the lower ground level of the Queen Victoria Building that has a quite a few in these styles...even some nice mary janes with cut outs.

They are having an annual winter clearance event. While touring the shoe department where I picked up 3 pairs of Ann Taylor flats for three bucks each, that had some Daniel Green slippers for not much more than that, five bucks--ten dollars, tops. Just passing along the info.

I am still very new to this lounge and feel a bit like an impostor because I don't wear true vintage and mix a lot. Well I am a mother of two little boys ... but no more Jeans for me :-)

Ebay is my private hell where I always and always find things to buy and way to often sell them again. Fifties never ever worked for me: I could never manage to padd my bra that much as were necessary and although not long waisted the top half is always way too short. So I came to try out forties but have had a hard time finding items with my 34 -26- 35/36 frame - again very often too busty for me. But then I would not want to give up that easily.

Laying ill in bed for two days I logged on and searched, searched, searched. First I found this one with just a little bit fifties/sixties flair to it - dreaming of summer ...

http://i2.ebayimg.com/03/i/001/2b/6f/6118_1.JPG

Well it was kind of last minute bidding actually and I got it for a good price. But I was still bored and got on until I found this one. And it screamed Katharine Hepburn right in my face. Postage is high and considered for hours and hours. Could not resist. Again.

http://www.auctiva.com/hostedimages/showimage.aspx?gid=793454&image=218127309&images=218127309,218127330,218127348,218127560,218 127496,218127453,218127372&formats=0,0,0,0,0,0,0&format=0

BUT there was this other treasure, exactly the kind of dress I dreamed ofwith the navy colour, the flowers, the swinging hem and the high neckline. I definitely had a different price tag on it in my dreams. I kept looking at it for two and a half days. Asked the seller if I could pay by the end of next week. Seller said kindly yes. I thought: O, bad. I clicked on it. It will be mine.

I'm starting to collect just a few small bits of vintage feathers and doo-dads with the intentions of making my own fascinators. Also, found this cute little cocktail hat. (Pardon the rumpled sheets)

Also, just starting to re-collect proper underpinnings and add to my growing collection of vintage robes. I know leopard print might be considered a bit cliche',but I haven't stopped loving it since 1990.

Well, I would love to integrate a little bit more vintage into my daily life but struggle a bit when it comes to shoes and hair. I know the thirties style for shoes because I loved them for ages but with all the forties stuff now I cannot find anything that would look ok - wedges aren't mine after all. But ooops, I am completely off topic now ...

As always, I *love* the diversity of the finds in this thread - so many varied interests and personal styles are represented!

Out of curiousity, is there are a particular name for the style of pattern in Michou1930's dress? I gave a friend an earlier piece in chiffon with a very similar pattern, and I've always had a weakness for it. It reminds me of the floral images of the natural world in French or Italian Medieval into Renaissance tapestries and paintings.

Thanks Inky and yes it is MBH, I was eyeing one in the Family Jewels but it was $300! And it wasn't in such good nick AND it was in the primary colours rather than B&W, which can be a bit gaudy! This was $65, and if I'd been waited and not used the BIN I might have won it cheaper, but patience is not one of my strengths! lol

Fluer, you usually only see those bags in colored cord, and I don't like them, but that one is very cute! Nice find.

Funny, I thought you might be "my" Eve but then again I thought the name may be not that seldom ;-)

I can't seem to PM you Michou, so will answer you in the vintage shoe thread!

I KNOW! I find them either wicked expensive or way too big for me, although I did find a pair of babydoll Remix heels for about $15, sold by someone on the Lounge no less! These including shipping, less than $35. I'm glad I held out to find a pair for cheap and am excited to have a more practical pair of retro dance shoes. Keep looking, you'll find some!

The quality is nice. Heavier fabric than I expected. The dresses really have some weight to them. The first dress is my favorite it fits really well. I have a large waist to hip ratio and sometimes if something fits one it doesn't fit the other but this works, without adding to my waist or hips. The second makes my waist vanish so its a bit baggy in shape for me. I become one stocky column shape. They are both very nice though. I do have to say, like in my previous post this is a conservative and modest company and both dresses are very long. To be at all wearable I will have to have 4-6 inches taken up on each dress, but ladies I am 5'3; most dresses needed some hemming for me.

PS, how sheer is the cream top of the first dress? My general test for the "see-through" factor of knits is if I can easily read the hang tag through the fabric. I like that dress - it's simple and cute.

Not a single bit. The cream fabric is as opaque as the black fabric.

Amazing shoe buys lately and add my voice to the chorus singing "that jacket is fantastic!" to MissHannah. The color is outstanding and I love the ruffled peplum in the back.

So I see... that's too bad! I kinda figured that if I could order online here in The Netherlands, the US should definitely be a possibility. Weird... Well, who knows, perhaps the dress will turn up on Ebay or something like that, 'cuz it sure is gorgeous! I may decide to close up the back and move the zip to the side though. Much easier to put it on myself then ;)

They look fantastic, pristine and wonderfully classic! You will be able to wear them forever and make them your own heirlooms.

I don't blame you one bit for buying them. Congrats!

Ditto - you look wonderful! Good suits are ALWAYS worth the money! ;)

I love those shoes! Are they vintage or new. If they are new can you tell me what brand?

It looks like they are a brand called Fahrenheit? That's what the seller says they are (I'll let you know for sure once I have them in my hot little hand). Looks like they are probably a vintage repro or inspired line.

I'd been looking for a good black suit for ages (they are worth twice as much because you can wear both halves of the suit with other outfits!) and so to find 2 in one day, both in mint condition like that... I just couldn't resist! the best part about it was that in the little shop I got them from they have loads of stock down in their basement stockroom and they let me go down and rummage around - it was fantastic - just like those vintage dreams you have (I'm sure I'm not the only one who has those, right?!).

I bought a limited edition fragrance by Marc Jacobs (first perfume my boyfriend has EVER liked on me, and we've been together nearly 4 years). Problem: it's a light fragrance, I believe an EDT, so it doesn't wear too long, but the bottle's too huge to carry around. Solution:

I'm forever having those "vintage dreams"! They are always so vivid - usually I am walking around a vintage market and every stall is full to the brim with beautiful vintage suits and dresses and don't get me started on the costume jewellery!!!!!!!!

Those are really beautiful suits MissHannah - they look terrific on you! :)

I bought a few things at the really great vintage store near me on Long Island. You really can't beat IRL vintage shopping for fit and haggling issues! Please excuse my 1) lack of hair and makeup and 2) lack of the proper foundation garments! lol

Early 60s wiggle dress. (Shoes are Stuart Weitzman platforms I scored elsewhere for $30!)

Fab 40s Faux Fur Collar "Turbo Orlon" Sweater with rhinestone cuff links and fastener. I've been lusting after this for months and finally bought it; she gave me about $20 off. (I wonder what makes the Orlon so Turbo? lol)
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_5LtM8BNoD8I/SZsqNIHmfXI/AAAAAAAAAsY/Bi_hyYVYF-Q/s800/IMG_0739.JPG

Do you think they work worn together? I'm on the fence.

I have to agree with you MissHannah. I think that Marilyn Monroe had a similar cardigan - I'll see if I can dig out a photo of her wearing and it see what she wore underneath.

Here we go - I think it could be a black cardigan with a mink collar (I think she had one in beige as well) - this is the only photo I could find - Marilyn and Milton Greene:

Thanks Miss Hannah, Miss Golightly, La Julia, and Exquisitebones!!! I think you're right about the high necked dress with the cardigan.

Today I had the sweater on over a sweetheart neckline slip, which looked great, but I'm not going to wear out a slip as my only "shirt." lol I think it will work well with a boatneck shell or dress under it too. I guess I really will have to buy a shirt to wear under it!

Well, this isn't quite a purchase, it was a gift from my boyfriend. I'm so excited about this, I would even go as far as saying that it's my new favorite thing. It's a beautifully decorated retractable powder puff from the 20's, in mint condition, in the original box, with the original instructions manual and everything. It can be opened (the swan down puff can be unscrewed) and you can put powder in it.

The instructions manual still has the original retailer stamp on it, it says:

Molinard Parfumeur
52, Boulevard Victor-Hugo
Grasse (Alp-Marit)

Grasse is near Nice, right? I'm imagining it was once owned by a fancy Côte d’Azur lady... :)

when I worked in a top-end vintage store about 20 years ago, we had one of these in much worse shape, and it was the only one I ever have seen until now. And we were asking, and got, $250.00 for it (and that's 1980s dollars, so that's a lot of money).

IO suggest never using it, as much fun as it would be to use it, as it is truly a rare and magnificent museum-quality item! What a nice gift!

And Grasse is the center of the perfume industry.
