In order to drum up some business in this section, I decided to show off some wool... show off some of yours too.

Below is one of my blue suits. A chalk stripe three piece.
I will post me wearing it later.

This picture is kind of dark.

:eek But seriously... I'll post a pic or two the next time I'm wearing one of these. Today I'm wearing a tweed coat (almost dead center in the picture) and bow-tie, so I think that breaks one of Deckard's rules...

Matt Deckard,

That photo of you sitting on the couch is really cool. It looks like a still from "The Godfather." Even the decor gives it a rich period look.

I just bought a new suit this weekend, my first. It's not vintage but it's the best I could do. It is out for alterations but I'll have it in a week or so.

I doesn't need to be vintage to look good. It is all in the cut and the fit.
The one advantage vintage suits have is that they were made to be worn daily and not just for the once in a while special occasions. It was not a "suit", back before the 60's a suit was just plain clothes and people wore it as such.

I hope this suit it is the first of many.
Show us a picture when you get it back.

This coming weeking is mine and Kathy's 2nd Wedding Anniversary. Two years ago, we got married on the Como-Harriet streetcar in Mpls. I have some pics of that event on my website. This year we'll hit the streetcar (not literally, that would hurt) again. I'll be in my blue suit with grey lid again and Kathy's gonna be in her vintage dress. We'll try for a lot of pics on the streetcar, I'll even bring the ol' Life Magazine for some shots. Afterwards that nite for dinner we'll hit Buca (awesome Italian food) and we'll change out to Indy Tux and Marion Dress for that. I just better not spill any food on that ivory jacket! Pictures will be coming, I promise!

I have the new title of the worst photographer in existence. Both are made to order from Samuelsohn. K

Brown suit. Side vents, surgeons cuffs, three button rolled to two, single brested, peak lapels, hacking pockets with ticket pocket, two flap pockets on pants(where'd I get that habit?).

http://prod.bsis.bellsouth.net/coDataImages/p/Groups/122/122817/folders/90228/708531suit1.jpg

Tuxedo. Super 120 with grosgrain lapels, side vents, surgeons cuffs, fancy lining, six on four button stance.

http://prod.bsis.bellsouth.net/coDataImages/p/Groups/122/122817/folders/90228/708532suit2.jpg

Accessories, Cole Haan formal shoes with grosgrain trim(no bows). Budd Shirtmakers(London section of Style and the Man for those who have it)pique collar, cuffs, and bib with voile body. Giorgio Armani pique tie. Ahh to have no children's expenses again.

Does anyone have a suit where the buttons on the sleeve can acually be undone? Aparently, that's a "sign" of a really good suit.

I am looking forward to my next visit to the tailor. I am going to see if he can do this.

Both of mine above have that feature. That's what the term surgeon cuff means. It's from when doctor's unbuttoned and rolled up their sleeves during housecalls. If you look closely at the above pics, you can just make out the last button-hole on the sleeves.

Pic in action. You can tell more detail about the shoes. They're patent split toe oxfords with the toe top in grosgrain and also around a one inch grosgrain band around the ankle. K

Here's a few pics I posted at COW for my Grey PBBM and I'll post 'em here plus a few more for the Blue ROTLA Suit. These were taken 10-5-2003 on our 2nd Wedding Anniversary. We were married at the Como-Harriet Streetcar line in Mpls. So for our 2nd Anniversary, we went back there to ride the streetcars, hang out at Lake Harriet, and then went to St Paul to Como Park. Como Park had Como Lake, Como Zoo, Como Conservatory, and an old Carousel. Carousel pics are still in the camera, will be posted within the week....

Ya know, out of the 20 some suits/suit jackets I have I think it is about time for a weeding out of things a don't quit want to keep in the collection anymore. Time to make some room for some better, more complete suits. If anyone is looking for a size 38 to maybe even a 42 let me know and I can show you what I have. I just found a very vintage three peice suit, wool no less. As of today I am having the horrible buttons that came on it replaced so it will be all good. It is light grey with a white and light blue pinstrip, I love it!:cool2:

The vest always ads to the look... nice suit.

I can't exactly tell from the picture, but I am working on a catalog of images and explenations for the new site which will detail suits and their fabrics, patterns and details.

The lost art of tailoring and what you get now.

Weave patterns and designs
Birdseye, Tatersall, Sharkskin, Venesian twill and, whipcord, pincord, chalk stripe, pinstripe, shadowstripe and all the rest.

Details
Extra fabric when hemmed, skeleton lining, smaller armholes, saddle stitch, peak lapels, vents, Valentino pockets, closeable collar, cuttaway no cuttaway.

The fit
What is a good fit, what should you look for.
Made to measure does not always make a well fitting suit.

History
Macy's used to make tailored pajamas and tailored robes in the 30's, tailored top coats and raincoats as well, today most of the salesmen and women don't know what a tape measure looks like (trust me I know).

What happened to heavy fabrics that held their shape.

give me a few days.

Hey Matt, I don't know what it is about that suit, but I really dig it. I think it's the shade of gray and the stripes. It really "suits" you! It goes with your gray Optimo very well.

Well, here's my new suit (http://public.fotki.com/jbbowers/fedoras/bradnewsuitandhat.html). I'd been waiting until my new Keppler came in before I posted. It's double breasted, but not pinstriped, just a wide plaid sorta criss-crossed pattern. Not sure what to call it. My students call it my gangster look.:cool2: I don't think they're referring to "gangstas."

Brad Bowers

Wild Root

That?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s a nice suit Brad. The pattern you chose is a good one. Pinstripes are over done in some ways. It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s refreshing to see something different.

I believe that the pattern of your suit is called Window Pane. That is what I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ve heard it being called and that?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s what other clothing experts I know have called it.

I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢m a fan of that pattern because it looks so 30?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s to me. Pinstripes are really cool, but right off the bat people think mobster. The ?¢‚Ǩ?ìWindow Pane?¢‚Ǩ? has a more sporty and friendly look.

I don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t have a Fotki account yet, but when I do, I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ll post some photos of my Window Pane suit.

By the way, that is a good looking hat. It really suits you. Is it vintage?

Take care.

See ya,

I'd love to go for that 30's summer look, though I don't have the gear for it yet.

I need to get myself a panama... I saw Art wearing a nice high crowned one at a previous vintage expo, though I'll probably take a trip to his shop before I have one made just so I can describe what I want in person... still don't know if I want a seem going over the top or not for Rollability.

What I want is a nice 3 button linen suit or a seersucker.

That is a really nice looking suit my friend. If you were standing next to a nice vintage car I would swear that you were straight out of the era. It has been very entertaining looking at all these handsome swells in their suits and hats. I'm struck by the fact that so far, most everyone seems to favor a double-breasted suit and an Indy fedora. (I am no exception.) But this combination has never looked quite right on me - and I think it's because the Indy hats are too wide brimmed and untapered to really pass as a genuine 1930s or 1940s dress fedora. There's just a slight touch of the cowboy in the blocking and the raw-edged brim. And I always though Harrison Ford wore his hat too squarely on his head to really look accurate to the period. Seems like genuine fedoraphiles always had them cocked at a rakish angle.

Is it just me?

PADDY

Matt, just a big THANK-YOU, for posting those pics of yours. You really 'live' the 30's/40's.

Thanks again Matt!

Matt Deckard
07-31-2004, 07:44 PM
Thanks.

The hat is a new one from Optimo in Chicago, they make the closest I know to vintage quality. It's a tobacco brown with a bound edge and 6 inch crown... It's become my daily.

It takes alot of searching at vintage shops to find cool clothes, pretty much all but the tie is new in the pic with the linen jacket.

I started out with hats and the style sort of worked its way down, I have to work on the militaria since I have always went for the Civilian look, especially 30's.

The photo I attached is of me and a good friend of mine on the Queen Marry. She's wearing a 100% vintage gown from the 30's. She's a member of the LA Art Deco Society. I'm in a 1930's suit and it is one of my favorites!

This was supposed to be a 60's 3-piece suit, apparently it was a more conservative mod suit. The legs of the pants are thin in that style. The lapels get 30's wide when I button it the 2nd button down, and mod suit thin if I use the top button.
It's got 3/4 lining too.
The fedora i'm wearing is the Akubra "The Fedora" in carbon gray.

I nevery usually get to the west coast. I stay mostly on the east coast, with the occasional trip to Vegas.
Their are no lapels on this suit. Its odd. It has a more rounded collar and thats it. You can see the collar in the top photo. Not sure why it was cut that way.

The two tones my friend is wearing are modern. They were made a few years ago I believe. Can't recall the brand but found them at a shop over in Sanpedro. They are a dark red/brown with an ivory canvas.

Big Man:

That Thompson has the longest barrel I've ever seen on one? Is that a custom? Or am I just so use to WWII versions?

The gun I have is a model T1 (1927A-1) made by Auto-Ordnance Corp. It has a 16.5" barrel (18" with compensator). They make a shorter barrrel model, as well as a military model. This gun was a Father's Day present from my son last year. It has absoutely no practical value, but it sure is fun to shoot and is quite a "conversation piece" with my friends.

shamus
08-14-2005, 10:55 PM
Televsion has no practical value either.. But I own two.

Now what if by chance you were traveling say in a 1927 Ford, down say, a dirt road in northern Indiana and lets say you just happen to have four bags of cash from, I don't know... a recently robbed bank. And lets say two other fords are behind you and they're painted black and white.

Then, Yes, that thompson has practical value. But how often do you travel in Northern Indiana?

Big Man
08-15-2005, 06:40 AM
I'd be in one of the black and whites, but that's another story. :)

When I said "no practical value" I was meaning in the sense of hunting or target shooting and, to a degree, self defense. The Thompson is heavy, bulky, awkward to load, and relatively underpowered. Of course when it was "new" I'm sure it was the best thing going, but by today's standards it can't measure up. Still, it's a really cool gun to own and shoot (especially if you're shooting at one of those "Dillinger silhouette" targets).

The following suits are not vintage in any way, but I hope you will derive some enjoyment from them, anyway.

Here is the off-the-rack suit I ended up purchasing. I think I nearly drove the entire staff of Moores (http://www.mooresclothing.com/), the Canadian division of The Men's Wearhouse (http://www.menswearhouse.com/), mad with my very specific requests that were somehow miscommunicated to the in-house tailor the first time or two. They made me write down exactly what alterations I wanted made and sign the specifications with the tailor. The entire process took about two or three weeks, I think. Phew!

http://members.shaw.ca/o.tong/images/bwsuit01.jpg

http://members.shaw.ca/o.tong/images/bwsuit02.jpg

Looking at these pictures makes me realize just how formless jackets in general appear to be today. In the future, I will complete this outfit with a black fedora. I wonder why this plain-black gabardine suit cost slightly more than the grey and brown patterened suits that I had also examined.

Speaking of the color grey, though, here is one of my early attempts at dressing up. The suit in this picture has since broken down. The fabric below the zipper just flaked off one day!

http://members.shaw.ca/o.tong/images/oldgreysuit01.jpg

One of these days, I have got to get my netcam into as good a position as it was in when I had taken the above picture.

Here's the specs:

First Picture

Early 40s high waisted trousers, late 30's spectators, late 30's suit jacket, Lauren Henline tailored shirt from 1934 pattern, mid thirties collar bar, late 30s tie, and mid 20s handkerchief.

Second Picture

The same except the shirt is modern, the hat is a mid to late thirties Borsalino and the sunglasses are from 1931.

Third Picture

Double Breasted Kuppenheimer suit from the late 30s - early 40s. Mid to late 30s green striped shirt, "Crosby" model pipe, mid 30s tie and an extra pair of trousers from the suit in the above two pics. This was to fake the funny pics in all the vintage catalogues where the boys are holding an extra pair of trousers from their "four piece" suit. The Double Breasted suit went to a new home (Bogie1943) when we were filming in Scotland.

Fourth Picture

Lauren found this double breasted (Nov 1941 just before WWII) tuxedo for $3. It fit me like it was made for me. The shirt is a deadstock mid 30's arrow and the tie is a you-tie-yourself modern silk one I found on ebay.

Sixth Picture

The shoes are deadstock buckskin (it is really hard to find size 12 vintage) shoes from the mid 30s. Got em for $20 at the last Vintage Expo. The trousers are from my Palm Beach double breasted suit that Lauren posted earlier, and the jacket is from a, dated 1927, three button suit and vest. I purchased it from Art Fawcett at the beginning of the last show. Sadly someone stole the matching trousers from this dead stock 20s suit while they were trying them on. It is a shame, but luckily it goes very well with my palm beach trousers. The tie is my favorite tie in my collection. It's a mid 30's no-lined tie that screams art deco. I have to force myself not to wear it exclusively for the sake of keeping it intact.

Eighth Picture

This is the completed suit from the above two pics. I found this suit at a flea market. It was deadstock, the trousers were unhemmed. I paid $30 for the jacket and trousers (the seller separated them thinking he would make more selling them individually) when I got home I discovered that a vest had been stuffed into the sleeve, it was the matching vest. It fit me perfect. It's late 30's, absolutely flawless condition and it is my favorite suit.

Chris is still a big Indy fan. I'm sure he'd like a vintage suit from you. But no worries if you can't turn it up. Katharine watches old movies with me all the time, and has a pretty decent vintage wordrobe now. She's 14 now (I'm the mother of a teenager  ), and Chris is 11. Both swing dance occasionally, too!

Rob and I are still with the big band, too. We play all the time up here. Rob Smith and Joseph come out to a lot of the shows, and are really fun dance partners. You and Lauren should come up sometime and see the band. She seems really nice, by the way. I'm looking forward to meeting her.

It's okay about our not managing to be in the same place at the same time. It's seems like we've all got pretty crazy schedules nowadays. At least we'll meet up at the QM. I'm gonna go now. Katharine wants me to take her picture and post it so you can see her now, too. :)

For those FL members who are wondering how we are connected. We both went to the same church in San Diego for several years. This poor gal had to deal with my nosing through their books and catalogues all the time.

Do you still have those 30's store catalogues? I remember tediously opening and closing pages, I was so nervous I would destroy something that has been intact for 65 years.

oh yeah...

Has Chris seen this little website:

www.indygear.com

Tell him to check out the Club Obi Wan forum. I have spent years on that board. That is where I first introduced my Indiana Jones shirts. Remember those? Chris would probably love to come to the QM on Saturday so he can see everyone in IndyGear and he could go whipcracking with everyone. There are a lot of really good people on that board. A lot of them post back and forth.

*sigh* I wish the girls around here would dress like that. Personally, I tire of seeing those worn out and ripped abercrombie jeans. The gals I go to school with just don't have any style. It's just a bit of an incongruance when I catch a reflection with a girl and I'm wearing suit separates and she's wearing flip flops and a tanktop. The only girl i know that knows how to dress herself happens to be a chinese pop star now, and they basically make her wear the most atrocious stuff on stage and in their videos. Really not her style.

Ray,
My daughter takes your sigh as a compliment, and it brought a smile to her face. We like your look as well. My daughter feels the same way about the guys styles here. She hates seeing the guys here with their boxers hanging out of their pants, or extra large shirts tucked into oversized pants :rage: .

Don't worry, Ray, you'll find your dream girl :) . Trix

Lauren,
I've heard your name before, too, and was wondering if you were "you" as well! We'll have to coordinate a trip to CoTC dressed in our "Sunday best" sometime, just for Steve! I'm really looking forward to Sir Winston's now, it's starting to feel like a family reunion with you and Daniel going. Let me know if you'll be in Carlsbad and maybe Rob and I can plan on going then, too. Trix

Nice lid, Ray...and you wear it well - just the right amount of "rakish tilt!" What is it? It kinda looks like a vintage Dobbs.

Mr. Rover
09-01-2005, 08:15 AM
It's actually a Royal Stetson Whippet. It was a size 6 3/4 but I had Art Fawcett stretch it to a 6 7/8 and put in a new sweatband. It still fits a bit tight, so I don't have much of choice. It doesn't fit comfortably unless it's a bit tilted. Funny, but I tend to tilt all my hats a little now, even my "Indy" lids.

Is that a... tie-yourself-bow tie? I am very impressed Mr. Assassin.

Mr. Rover
09-02-2005, 04:48 AM
Of course, it's a real bow tie! My dad gave it to me. He used to be into bow ties and double breasted suits when he was younger. The label says "Chaps by Ralph Lauren". My dad also saw a sale on ties at Brooks Bros. once and bought me 3 bowties as a gift.
Anyway, this week has been a great week for vintage for me! I wore a trenchcoat through a typhoon, and wore a suit twice this week. I guess the tropical typhoon breezes kept it cool enough. I ALSO received a hat I won on eBay a week ago- a gray Penney's Marathon that I wore today.
I wore my vintage blue pinstripe 3 piece suit to school/play reahearsal today (sans waistcoat- too hot). I also wore a french cuff shirt to school for the first time. Not as burdensome as I thought it would be. Braces are my new thing now, too. They're so much better than belts.

We just explained we were taking pictures in our vintage-styles. This is the pop star I was talking about in another post. She was dressed sorta "mod" today.

Well friend, you're looking at a late 50's or early 60's suit. The union tag reads Copyright 1949. The cut of the coat and the label tells me that it could be from 1955 to 1962 or so.

You're getting closer! It is vintage but, not 40's. ;)

Matt & Root:
Thanks to both you for the I.D. aid. I noticed the lapels but didnt think it through to the late 50s "Man in The Gray Flannel Suit" period. And the pants dont have suspender buttons inside either. It is beautiful fabric and well made with some hand work.Dont know what I'll do with it though.Too warm to wear in Florida and a bit too large on my 179 lb. frame (Matt-Im down from 195 on an every other day fasting regimen).Oh yes- I checked and found that John Wanamakers Mens Store in Phil. closed and was renamed as a bank building in 1952-so if this is later it must be a New York suit.

Why are we shunning a great vintage suit? Just because it's not from the 40's is no reason to get rid of a great suit. They still wore a fedora with 1950 and 1960 suits.

In fact I just picked up a great early 60's suit that some of my shorter brim fedoras are going to look great with.

Wild Root
09-04-2005, 11:27 PM
Umm, yeah. I never said anything to it being bad because it's a later suit. I believe he asked if it was 40's I simply stated it wasn't as old as he hoped. I think he's on the search for an earlier suit because that's the look he's looking for. ;)

It's still a good suit but as Sandy said, it's to warm of a suit for Florida.

I reckon that jacket has an older 'look' with the high closure and rounded bottom corners. Whether it's '50s or not. The cloth looks nice and heavy too.
It looks rather like a '30s or earlier English utilitarian style...

No, they are all vintage 1930s and '40s. He found some in Chile, believe it or not, to which U.S., Canadian and German rag merchants export a lot of their wares in giant bales. Sometimes, great vintage clothing sneaks through.

The blue suit in the last photo from the group above, for instance, was found by us in a used clothing store in Santiago, Chile. It's German. Marc says that it's from before the Second World War. It even has the vest! (See below)

Over all very nice, but not perfect but good enough for me. As you can never find anything over a size 38 now days... This one's about a 44 regular and I felt lucky just to find one.

The color is a light tan. The tie is vintage 40's too.

I agree, the sleeve length looks fine. Most American men wear their sleeves way too long. You want to show about 1/4 to 1/2 inch of cuff when standing with your arms by your sides. I think the reason why you think the suit sleeves are too short in this case might be that your shirt sleeves are on the short side.

Shamus, that suit looks nice! The sleeves may look a little short but, I can't tell unless your arms are at your side. It wouldn't kill it to have the sleeves lengthened just a little though.

Wingnut, that suit is just amazing! In the first photo, it looks gray but the second photo of just the fabric is amazing! That is really a nice suit. I dopped it off at the tailor today to lengthen the sleeves. He asked me to wear it. I received a new in the mail today! It's from the 1950's. It's a 4-1 blue flannel double-breasted blazer, and fits me almost perfectly (except the sleeves are about .5 inch too long)

I also got ANOTHER new jacket today from a different seller. It's a Hart, Schaffner, & Marx double-pinstripe 6-2 jacket in a bluish green color.
The color is relatively close to this picture from the site:

Thanks, Bellytank! I'll get pictures of the HS&M jacket soon! I wish it had pants with it- I think it'd be worth a lot of money!

You could be a Shanghai Gangster- if you don't mind me saying so...

I'll put up a pic of the 'same' ensemble I have- maybe tomorrow.

My grandpa was from the the Shanghai area, actually, so it's quite apt. He fled to Taiwan when his parents arranged a marriage for him to this much older woman. Wife is Chinese is "Lao Puo", which means older lady.
He, my grandmother, my mom, and my uncle moved to N.Y. from Taiwan in the early 70's, where I was born and raised.

Some pictures of the linen slacks I wore tonight to my dad's 50th birthday party. It's still quite warm in Taiwan.

Wonderful look! I think I was just getting into the golden era in high school, so it's nice to see a young gentleman doing the same. You have a very nice look and you take to vintage very well.

Marc you should post pics of the green suit we traded. My camera wouldn't do it justice but you guys are great at posting the true colors.

By the way it was such a pleasure meeting the two of you. Next time we are in the area, if you guys aren't too busy, we'd love to have lunch or dinner with you two.

I've got a ton of pics ready, I'm attempting to load them now. Ties, shoes, shirts, suits, hats... so I'll post em' in your "show us" threads.

Hey watch out! That's my wife you've got there (on your left - our right). By the way, my mom made her that dress.

As requested by M.Deckard. Heck, as long as I'm going for it, I might as well be the master crossposter.

(Photo removed due to the strange coincidence that both Dan and Lauren posted it simultaneously)

This is an early 30's tweed three piece that I picked up at the vintage expo a couple days ago for $125. It's made by Marshall, Field & Co. This suit is a tailor's opus.

Love the suit Daniel! Wish I could find one like it. Any close-up photos of the fabric?

Not to leave you out, Root. Your suit is pretty swell, too.

Daniel: Yes, please do. We would love to have a closer peep at the material. Could we see the vest as well? You had said in a cross post that the vest had a hidden pen stitching, could you show that off as well please? I'd have to say you look like something out of the book 'Gentleman's Guide to Grooming & Style' by Bernhard Roetzel. Thank you for sharing.

WR: Could you tell me a bit about your black on black wingtips? Are they all leather or fabric and leather? The part behind the toe cap has a flat finish that looks like material.

Cheers!

Good eye Dan. I'll let Root tell you about the shoes but... those are his other pair I lust after. Amazing find especially in a size 12! Unheard of!

I will post pics of the vest stich and thanks for the complements.

Marc posted that it is a "Donegal weave." He saw the suit in person on Saturday.

Dan

Amazing suit. Dan must take a photo of the jacket's pockets, which "bellow" into the lining. These inside bellows prevented the pockets from bulging outward when filled with objects. Instead, they bulged inward, where no one could see it happening. Hence, the line of the suit was maintained.

Yes... and I tested that and it works! Incredible tailoring!

I just wish I could find the good stuff you guys come across. Pickin's are a bit slim up here in San Luis Obispo County. I can find a great looking suit, but the size would have fit me about 18 years ago in highschool. Or if I find one in my size, the style is all wrong or just worn out, or it's in good shape and the selle wants an arm & a leg for it. Not too many 48R's to be found on e-bay to my consternation. I guess I'm just not looking hard enough or queing the right search words. I would love to find a vintage suit for our Christmas trip to Disneyland this year. Just trying to be a bit more stylish than the rest of the herd there.

Daniel:Always happy to compliment when a compliment is due. BTW, the 1930's shirt pattern that Lauren found for me on e-bay had arived. I bought several bits of material to make some shirts. Tell her I said thanks, the help was most appreciated. I've been trying to find vintage style stripe shirt material around at several fabric stores around where I live and haven't found much (too much floral foo foo). Do you have any sources for such materials, on-line or otherwise? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Cheers!
