Since the books were written long before the first movie was produced. I thought this would be a wonderful place to talk about all things Anne of green gables plus the time period.
The first time I found out about Anne of Green Gables was in 1986 when the movie was shown on PBS. I saw the trailer and was hooked for life. I even recorded the movie from the TV so the whole family could enjoy watching the movies too. I had no idea Anne of Green Gables was a book until I saw it listed in the opening credits of the films.
Many years latter at the high school library I read the book series for the first time. I was leaping with joy!

Since then I now have the cookbook http://www.lmm-anne.net/archives/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/51ggjzsv27l_sl500_.jpg it truely is a dream cooking from it an the recipes are simple to follow. I let my auint barrow it and she loved it.
My two other great finds are the Anne of Green Gables Christmas Treasury http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_lmEOjtj9U9s/SwKSLcL3JZI/AAAAAAAADxc/SMRVtJ5adQg/s400/Anne.jpg a wonderful way to celebrate a Green Gables style Christmas. And the Anne of Green Gables Treasury http://covers.openlibrary.org/w/id/96600-L.jpg in this book you will learn how to prepare your very own Anne style tea party, transform your garden into one just like Anne's, and recreate handicrafts too. None of these books were written by L.M. Montgomery.
I recently learned there is a new Anne of Green Gables book plus movie.
Titled Anne of Green Gables- A new beganing http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001TD73OI/ref=mp_s_a_15?qid=1324945139&sr=8-15
This is the story about Anne's life before she went to live with Mirilla and Matthew. In this movie Anne is a grown up thinkining about her life when she was a little girl. Plus the adult Anne parts of the movie is set in the 1940's. I myself have not seen it yet but did see the trailer for the movie on youtube. It looks wonderful! I am so excited!

The very first movie version of Anne of Green Gables was made in 1919. It was directed by William Desmond Taylor and starred Mary Miles Minter. It is now considered a lost film as no prints are known to exist. Taylor's unsolved murder in 1922 also destroyed the film career of Mary Miles Minter who was thought to have been romantically involved with him.

I just happened to catch the 1985 TV version (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088727/) a few months ago and found it perfectly entertaining.

Oh, how wonderful. I had no idea Anne of Green Gables the film was done during the silent era. There was an actress Dawn Evelyeen Paris also known as Dawn O'day who played Anne Shirley in the 1934 version of Anne of Green Gables. She loved the role so much she even changed her name to Anne Shirley.

I couldn't help but notice that Megan Follows who played Anne in the 1985 version bears a striking resemblance to Lucy Maud Montgomery.
