Inspired by late night ebay-perusing with the fabulous Miss Neecerie, I thought it was about time we had a thread dedicated to showing off everyone's vintage compacts. And tell us a bit about it when you post as well - because the back-story is half the fun.
Here's my latest & new favorite: a WWII-era Navy 'sweetheart' compact. (I collect sweetheart items & Naval ones in particular.)

And here's one I picked up about a month or so ago. It's the first 'purse-style' one I've bought.

Wow Vanessa, those are beautiful! I saw a few on ebay but money is tight so I've been concentrating on buying main pieces like dresses, shoes, and hats. How do you date something like a compact?

Ooh, I wish I had pictures of mine! Alas, they all came from local antique shops, and I have not taken a picture of a single one...

I do collect sweetheart jewelry as well--I have a small collection of some neat pieces. No compacts, though!

By the way, love the sweetheart compact :)

I will be taking pictures of mine....since Vanessa has prodded me in public like this...

She jokingly calls me the President of the Compact Collectors Anonymous....and I am soon to be producing membership cards.

I just can't resist them, little works of art and objects of girly beauty that they are....

I need help...

Denise...who is bidding on ebay as we speak

I can't resist them either--but I can't resist dresses, or shoes, or...

I love it when they have powder in them, or bits of rouge--you can imagine the woman who originally owned them!

Who's joking? ;)

Katy: The easiest to date are, of course, sweetheart type ones and ones that have been produced for specific events - like fairs, corporations, boat launchings, etc. I believe the Prez just picked up a few books on Amazon about dating/identifying compacts, if she'd like to share the authors & titles.

This is my everyday compact. It's not very fancy, but it belonged to my grandmother -- so there's a lot of sentimental value.

http://www.midcoast.com/~lizmcl/compact1.jpg

It's an Elgin "American Beauty," and I've also got the little cloth storage pouch and the rather tattered box it came in.

http://www.midcoast.com/~lizmcl/compact2.jpg

I keep it filled with Coty loose powder, and it's always in my purse ready to go into action against the plague of shiny-noseitis.

Speaking of events and places and things, I'm dying for a Queen Mary and a Chicago World's Fair compact.

Vanessa, I love how yours is heart shaped- even the little puff inside. That's too, too cute!

So this is my favorite compact. It is of the Empire State Building, it is engraved in the back "Worlds Tallest". Inside are two compartments for powder. The original powder and puffs are still present. It also has a small mirror inside shaped like the building. The story that I got from the seller is that these were made for the wives of the businessmen who helped to build the building. I'm really not sure though, it could have been done for the wives of the work crews. It is dated 1931, and in beautiful condition.
I can't believe I'm posting this silly picture, but it's the only one I have of the compact.

I know this is going to be a stupid newbie question but how do you keep the loose powder from spilling out whenever you open it?

Jonni (who, alas, has no compacts to show.....must go to Ebay to take care of that little problem!)

Vanessa
05-24-2006, 03:51 PM
Jonni: Most compacts come with little fitted sifters, so the powder doesn't go everywhere. It's like a screen that pops out so you can refill the powder.

Here's mine (http://siobhan.freeshell.org/compact.gif) I use daily, just a plain old "Ritz" compact about 1/8 inch thick! (placed on the scanner bed): :p Courtesy of everyone's favorite online auction site. Also has Coty powder inside. :)

This is a great thread because I bought a compact from an antiques fair a year or so ago, and I have no idea how old it actually is! I don't know if anyone is any good at recognising these things, especially from such rubbish phone cam pics!

The brand name on the little snappy power guard is "Darling" and I've tried googling it. Nothing! It has it's original, slightly frayed inner fabric sifter, but no puff. The top pattern seems to be some sort of transfer. It's in reasonable condition. Any ideas? I will take a better picture of it when I can!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v290/missmcgerr/Image024.jpg

Very blurry of the inside!

Outside

If course, chances are, it's not actually vintage at all, merely old!

oh how I wish my digital camera wasn't broken! I have a Volupte compact with little crowns diagonally across it. The crowns have from 1 to 3 red rhinestones in them. When I got it it was brand new and in the box but now I've put it through a lot of abuse.

My compact also belonged to my grandmother. It is a larger size with black enamel. The back side is textured. It still faintly says Fifth Rex on the ribbon on the puff. It has it's screen, but no matter how little powder I put in it is still comes through around the edges and covers the mirror. If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this please let me know. I carry it in my purse but always hesitate to use it as it is so messy when I open it.:(

CherryRed I love your compact it is SO very 40's looking, and very, very stylish!
I have a few compact and will post pics of them later, but i tend to find that most of the 40's compact were rather large, but I do have one tiny compact that is brand new and still has the unused powder in it, and the best part is it has the RAF wings on the front, so it is obviously from WWII (it's Kings Crown:D ). I also have another sweetheart compact that is made from cardboard (wartime restrictions:eek: )!! It is navy blue and also has the RAF wings on it and the RAF colours on it! It open in such an unusual way as well!:D

All your compacts are gorgeous!!

I use my Besame compact day to day, but am slowly building a nice little collection of vintage ones, especially the more deco designed ones.

This one is my favourite though. It was my Nana's, and she gave it to me when I was a little girl. It's still in it's box, and has quite a bit of powder inside. I think it dates from when she left the Army in about 45 /46 ish. If anyone knows anymore about it though I would love to know. All I know is what you can see, that it is by Mascot of London. I have so very little knowledge on compacts.... does anyone have the ISBN of the book mentioned? I'd love to learn more y'see...

Waffle over, on to the prettyness.

I used to have at least one vintage compact that was lost somewhere along the way. I just bought another one today at a flea market. I have all vintage or vintage-styled cosmetics in the handbags I carry when I am reenacting, so I desperately needed an appropriate compact to replace my modern one. I filled it with Estee Lauder Re-Nutriv loose powder I had. Not exactly retro, but it smells nice and works well!

I paid $10 for it at a local flea market. It had the original screen, puff, and paper liner, and all looked unused. It is large, probably 4" across. The only markings are on the puff it reads "Dorset, Fifth Avenue." The compact is gold with a cute little fish motif on the front, with rhinestones for his face. I would guess it dates from the 50s, but I am no compact expert so maybe one of you girls can advise?

The pictures are huge so I will post links:

Here's my compact. I've been trying to upload photos to my computer but just can't get my camera software to jive with my new computer. So I had to do a google image search to find something that was similar. It's a small rectangular compact with powder on the left and blush on the right. I found it a couple years ago at my grandmother's church rummage sale. The name inside is Richard Hudnut and it says 14K gold plated. I don't think it was used much since you can still see the name "Richard Hudnut" embossed on the blush. I have no idea what year it might be. The front has a very decorative border and then 3 rectangles, one inside the other. The first (closest to the outside) looks like brushed gold, the one inside that is shiny, and the smallest is brushed. Maybe one of you ladies can help me out.

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h230/asianflutterby/hudnut.jpg
It more closely resembles the second picture but it still has the two puffs as you can see in the first.

Katydid, I was reading this thread without my glasses on and was just taking in the general gist of the posts, when I came to that name--Richard Hudnut--and really couldn't make out the last name. Yet, oddly, I filled in the blanks and said "Hudnut". I don't know why that name is so familiar to me or why I even knew it at all...! But I vaguely THINK I remember a line of cosmetics by that name WAY back when I was a kid (maybe the 1950's).

This one is by Elgin American.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i271/neecerie/IMG_0634.jpg

This is the compact in its cloth purse handle case. The back side of the cloth case has a small pocket and a slot that holds a comb for those out on the town touch ups to hairstyle.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i271/neecerie/IMG_0635.jpg

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i271/neecerie/IMG_0636.jpg

When I bought this, it was absolutely perfect inside, never been used at all. I love the gazelle pattern and want more items in it.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i271/neecerie/IMG_0637.jpg

The mirror hinges forward to reveal a small compartment just the right size for ID and credit card.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i271/neecerie/IMG_0639.jpg

I have put besame powder in the powder compartment and well trained eyes will spot that the lipstick is also a besame, which fits in the case right where the orignal one did (I have the original lipstick case safely in storage)

Ok...thats number one...and all for today

Is this Elgin American Compact. I just adore the unusual shape and the art deco lines of it.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i271/neecerie/IMG_0671.jpg

It needs a good cleaning out as you can see that the rouge is still there and has stained the area around it.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i271/neecerie/IMG_0672.jpg

But since I pieces to use them, and not strictly as collection items, I don't mind imperfections in my compacts.

Thanks...I am slowly cleaning the rouge out..but its hardened...so its like stucco in there.

Funny thing is that I saw another two on ebay recently, but one was unenameled and looked really horrid with the brass showing all over. I have a feeling it was an unfinished piece from some factory corner or something.
The other one was not in as nice condition on the outside as this one.

I keep hoping that maybe I will find it in a different color, which would be cool to grab as well.

Oh yes, regular compacts did look much nicer years ago. There are so many different levels of compacts from past eras, that sometimes placing anything but the most collectable known brands is hard.

They were a fashion accessory. Since they were refillable, they were not a throw away item generally, but a woman might get them as gifts for special occaisions.

This is one of the things that got me started on compacts. The sheer variety of designs, styles etc. You tell me what you like or are interested in, hobby wise...and if you give me enough different options and a bit of time, I can find you a compact that suits you in an individual mannner. You play the French Horn, you say! Well I have seen compacts with little french horns, Ballarina? you are covered as well. Like a certain colour or flower and its even easier.....

Compacts are little tiny pieces of customized artwork, portable and glamourous. They represent all that is feminine and beautiful and in todays collectable marketplace, if you are willing to accept 'usable but not pristine' condition, you can get a vintage compact for as cheap as 5-10 on the ebay.....

And seriously, the offer is there if any of you want me to forward links of compacts you might be interested in...send me things you like.....

That's adorable, doll! How wonderful to have a friend who knows how to replace rhinestones for you.:)

Rosie, I love the cigarette cases too and keep trying to win super cool ones for various things besides cigarettes!

Both heart shaped compacts are lovely, Blanche and Jitterbug. Heart is one shape I don't have yet, so you have made me want to go run out and get one.

Sandysfancy, I did know about the solid perfumes Estee Lauder comes out with, and have seen whole books on them...one of the few brands that has not lost out on the craftsmanship side of makeup containers.

Golly, your compacts are all so pretty. I only have a few. One treasured one is of the Empire State building, actually says "worlds tallest" on it. Was given to the wives of some of the workers who helped to open the building. But, sadly, it's the only cool compact I have. You all make me want to start buying more.

I don't have all that many compacts, but I do have one Empire State one from when the building was first built. This will be a nice companion for it.

Hi Kids! :D

I recently bought a 1920s/1930s era powder compact. It's so cute - I love it! But it's signed on the bottom by "Mary Scott Rowland". Does anybody know anything about her / her cosmetics line?

Hi Ladies,

My name is Katie and I just joined a few days ago. A brief introduction: I've always loved the 1940s especially and am gradually going vintage. I've been doing my hair in various 40s styles for about a week now and receive the nicest compliments. Actually, it's the hair that brought me to Fedora Lounge.

Anyway, I would like to get a compact but I have no idea what to look for other than an intact puff/mirror. All of those combo compacts confuse me and, ultimately, I would like something functional. I'm open to loose powder, but I don't want a mess in my purse.

Is the snapping solid compartment for pressed only and the mesh for powder only, or can powder go in both?

Anything else to help out a newbie would be appreciated. I'm a makeup junkie, so I would love to collect these!

~K

LizzieMaine

I use loose powder in compacts without a mesh screen -- but only if there's an inner lid that snaps closed over the powder compartment. Otherwise, you'll end up with powder all over the inside of your purse, which is something that never cleans out.

Most of the better quality compacts came with a soft fabric carrying pouch, and it's nice to have these -- it protects the compact from getting scratched up in your bag. And if there's a powder leak, it'll end up in the pouch instead of the purse!

You won't damage the compact you are putting the powder pan in, but the only method I have used to depot powders, shadows, etc. will damage the original plastic container (though in most cases I would be tossing the old container out, or using it for the Back2MAC recycling program, so it doesn't matter how it ends up.) If you depot it carefully, you will not damage the actual makeup. Here is a step-by-step guide:

There are -tons- on ebay for really reasonable prices. Compacts are one of those items where if you are not into collecting a 'certain brand' or trying for a really 'collectable' one, you can score them for 5 bucks or less a lot of time.

Hence being able to have so many....like some of us do....*shuffles feet embarassedly*

Lady Day, get some mineral foundation powder. You can adjust the coverage yourself and it doesn't contain preservatives or any other nasty harmful ingredients. Check out the mineral make-up thread for recommendations.

I'm waiting for this little set to arrive: http://i5.ebayimg.com/07/i/000/9c/60/0694_1_b.JPG

I've got a mother of pearl compact almost exactly like it that belonged to my grandmother, but the mirror has cracked, and this one also has a lid on the inside which the other one doesn't.
Has anyone ever tried putting new lipsticks in old lipstick holders? I figured I could try to fill it with lipbalm.

Wow, I love the design on the top.

I bought a rather large compact, I love it but does have a rather large diameter, Like, it's much larger then my hand. I'd measure it, but I'm at work. Does anyone have any suggestions for amking a powder puff to fit it? There's a screen and I've been keeping Coty powder in it, but the powder gets all over the mirror, thankfully not all over my bag. I thought about tracing it on cardboard and cutting it out and covering it with cotton, sort of like from a blanket, on one side and some sort of flannelly fabric to go around it. Feasable? Any other ideas? As it is, this idea is on my rather lengthy to do list, so who knows when I'll get to it ;)

My friend bought me this compact today. It looks black, but it is actually a deep blue. I really liked it, but was disappointed that there was no rouge compartment. After I got it in the car... DER! There was a rouge department all along! I just didn't see it! And it was unused. I love it even more. The top is decorated with rhinestones.

I had a quick look through my compact reference book and its not in there.....which means nothing given the vast amount of styles and variations.

I -know- I have seen that same sort of interior styling and repousse work somewhere, but can't quite remember at the moment.

My -guess- as to age...would be sort of mid range...ie 40's...not so early as 20's or 30's, those decades were much more -wild- with the enamel work they did. Not so late as 50's because the 50's compacts I see tend not to have rouge in them...but I could be very wrong.

More might come to me when I am not drugged....

The fun thing about this one, which I simply cannot capture in a picture, is that the picture is on a clear layer of plastic over the gold background. This means all those portholes that look lit up, are the gold backing showing through the gaps in the coloring.

This is one of my favorite compacts. I'm thinkings its from the 30s- pre war. Its has two compartments, one for powder, and one to hold cigarettes.

It is not signed. but does have a tiny "made in japan" stamp on the inside in almost a deco type typeface-it looks too old to me to be post war- I purchased it from a seller in England who told me it was 30s-

My other half bought me one the other week from Past Times, as a treat for finishing a rather big sewing job.

I have to say it is BEAUTIFUL - lovely black and red Art Deco enamel with a few brilliants set into the lid. Unfortunately when you get it open, it isn't a compact.... it's a handbag mirror. One side is a magnifying mirror and the other side is a plain mirror. It's still gorgeous, but it doesn't have the room to hold any powder.. .[huh]

I got a little combination compact/wallet in an Ebay lot with some vintage belts, but I know nothing about it.

Has anyone ever seen a combo like that? The wallet is square, looks like ostrich skin, and has a coin pocket on one side, a billfold on the other, and a square compact in the middle. There's a little metal plate that pops open where the powder should be, though it's very shallow, I'm not sure how much could fit in there.

Any thoughts? I'm wondering whether it's worth keeping or passing along, since I have no idea what decade it's from.

Its only issue seems to be the tiny scratch inside the powder compartment. It's bigger than the pictures suggest, about 3" across. But the portholes don't light up like Neecarie's!

Most vintage compacts have a screen that fits down over the loose powder you put into it...

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i271/neecerie/IMG_0638.jpg

is a good picture of a screen ...you put some powder in, then push the screen down gently and it holds it in there.

I only ever put enough powder for an evening out, so as not to overfill.

I get my compacts of ebay. I do occasionally run into one in an antique mall or flea market..but ebay pricing tends to be better.

Yea...anything 'collectable' like a Trio-ette tends to run high. The serious (not using types) collectors get them and pay that much.

yes...if you want ones you can -use-...the bay is the way to go.

There are usually at least 15 pages of 'vintage compacts' on there....mostly on the cheap but usable side.

You can get a -lot- auction of 10 or so compacts for under 20 bucks at points...and guarantee that most of them are not too damaged to use.

Yes. It looks kind of like a pocket watch. I may have some questions about care and cleaning once I receive it. Per the description it is in useable shape.

I made a felt pouch for my compact and have started on a velvet and satin one. I e-mailed Benefit about the Trio-ette hoping maybe they had some old ones in stock. The didn't but at least I tried.

ok ladies i need some help/advice, my husband made me this cute little "compact" for Christmas and i was wondering if any one here would ever want to buy one, he had a lot of fun making it and thinks he could sell them but im not sure, they don’t open up but one side has a mirror and the other side has glass but under the glass he put a wedding picture(you could put just about anything under the glass) he then made a little velvet pouch for it to go into.
it's really cute and could be any size but i don’t know if any out would buy it because it does not flip open but the appeal would be that it could be customized with pictures or colors and for this sake could be made verry retro looking.
any impute would be helpful, if you would buy it how much do you think would be a good price to pay for something like that?

deadpandiva
12-28-2007, 07:49 AM
I think something like that would do well on ebay or at craft shows. Even stores that do consignment. I can think of two or three here in Minneapolis that would carry something like that. I'd need to see a picture but I have purchased several modern mirror compacts in the past including the kind that don't flip up. Your husband should consider the cost in making them as i think the mark up is uasually at least cost x 3. Also if he is looking at putting them in stores they may want up to 50% which effects the price.

I just one these. They are being shipped to my sister's with insurance. I posted a link to the Stratton one because the pictures are huge. It still has the insert with instructions on using it for pressed or loose powder.

This is a make up compact by Elizabeth Arden. I got it at a car boot sale and the sticker on the back says it's 1930s. I think I was about 10 or so when I picked it up. On the back of the compact it says "Invisibleveil. Shade 51. Elizabeth Arden, London" and I think the Invisibleveil line is still on sale nowadays but I'm not sure. As you can see it's still full of makeup, and the smell of it! Nostaligia at it's finest. The puff is still there - sort of. The puff itself has come away from the top part of it.. if that makes sense. Also, the pressed makeup itself comes out of the compact (but is still in it's little metal.. thing :eusa_doh: ). The mirror is also still perfect.

This compact is by Cara Nome. I'm not familiar with her. On the back it says "Medium rouge" on a sticker, and the back of the actual compact says "Cara Nome. Langlois, Boston Los Angeles". I got this in September at a antique and bric a brac shop in Kansas.

Underneath the rouge there is another compartment when you flip open the cover as you can see, but even though the puff is there, there's no makeup. It's looks pretty clean though so maybe there was never make up in there. Perhaps you bought it empty so that you could put whatever shade you like in there. I don't know.

The only vintage compact that I have is a Djer Kiss Fairy compact, from about 1925. It looks like this:

http://www.morninggloryantiques.com/imagesS5/acc28831_small.jpg

Unfortunately mine no longer has the rouge pot in it. I am wondering if one can fashion a refill?

Anyway, regarding Queen Mary compacts, my mother used to have one, but it was very different from the ones you ladies have, it had a crest on the front instead of a picture. Has anyone ever seen one of these? Unfortunately, my mother threw her compact out because it was broken.

I am going by memory here, and honestly the compact has been gone for about 30 years.

The Queen Mary one that my mom had was a yellow metal, I'm guessing brass, but you could call it "gold tone." It said Queen Mary on the front, I think in another color but I'm not sure, (red, blue? ) probably enamel, and I think that the crest was raised. There was a screen inside to hold the powder, I think it was some type of fabric because it ripped (I think my sister played with it and hastened it's demise). The powder was dark, but it belonged to my great aunt who was very suntanned.

Ok none of my compacts are in quite such good condition or as exciting in design but I'll show them off anyhow!

My First ever compact!
Well the first one is a Stratton 'Stratnoid' (Also the name of their knitting needles!) It's apparently one of the earliest Stratton’s with a registered design number for 1931 and only 2'' in diam. I think it may be from a later date due to the difference of background foil colour (Turquoise instead of Gold) but who knows they may of done different colour choices from the start?! Oh and the fuzziness of the transfer was like it from new!

http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk319/Lilliputs/P3170017.jpg

My second compact showing of today is a Coty (1920/30’s), also 2’’ in Diam. and again has seen better days (I’m sure all my compacts come to me to retire) It’s for a solid pan of powder, unlike the one above. The design, which I’m sure you all know is called ‘Puffs’ by Rene Lalique (Coty Airspun- L’Aimant). I like this one because I was given two original 30’s/40’s powder boxes from my Grannie with the matching ‘Puffs’ design- all very lovely.

And to LelaViavonie- the answer.....I bought them (well my mum bought the coty) One gran doesn't wear much make-up and my other grannie does, but when she used proper compacts- boy were they used! Plus I have a sister so there would be squabbling.

If the outer latch does work...use it anyhow.

Does the powder area have a screen? if so, just always open the outer latch carefully and there is no reason why you cant use it...I have a few that have tricky inner latches and use them!

nico demouse
11-05-2008, 05:34 PM
It does not have a screen, just the inner door. I think I will go ahead and fill it with powder and try it. I'll need to find a powder puff that will fit inside.

My mother has another compact that was my grandmothers. Hers is silver, gold, and rose-gold colored with an Oriental looking design on the cover. Inside was the little compartment for the powder but it also has a little music box. I remember when my grandmother gave it to my mother how wonderful I thought it was.

I have 7 compacts. Most are from Oz but I did get a few overseas.

This 30s one is from Germany. I like the simple Art Deco design with gold and red enamel. It still has both powder and rouge, with original rouge inside.

This green Art Deco one is an early 30s compact. I love it's simple design and colour. It's a alot more basic inside too and has it's original puff.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3193/3012647186_3ea193cb61_m.jpg

This 40s one is cool. I love the shape and the engraved design - geometric with flowers - such a cool combo. Doesn't have it's original puff though.

This is my favourite. It's a combo purse/compact called 'Swinglok'. The actual compact slips inside a little open purse with a money pouch. The compact has a compartment for cigarettes (or clips, gum etc), a square puff with netting and a lipstick container. Is very cool :) Even has it's original info tag. Why don't they make useful stuff like this now???:eusa_doh:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3184/3012190475_808e988407_m.jpghttp://farm4.static.flickr.com/3010/3012204317_12c666b9aa_m.jpghttp://farm4.static.flickr.com/3239/3013051282_708c1df225_m.jpg

This one I found at an op shop. It's been well used and not in good condition, but I liked it because it was engraved. I always wonder who 'Val' was :)

And some original powder boxes from the 30s. Both are full of powder, one has been opened, the other hasn't. I love the design on the Revelry tub and the baby blue colour.

Yea....Antique malls and compacts...hehe...somehow they think even junky ones merit -mint- in box type pricing.

This one is by Elgin American.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i271/neecerie/IMG_0634.jpg

This is the compact in its cloth purse handle case. The back side of the cloth case has a small pocket and a slot that holds a comb for those out on the town touch ups to hairstyle.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i271/neecerie/IMG_0635.jpg

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i271/neecerie/IMG_0636.jpg

When I bought this, it was absolutely perfect inside, never been used at all. I love the gazelle pattern and want more items in it.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i271/neecerie/IMG_0637.jpg

The mirror hinges forward to reveal a small compartment just the right size for ID and credit card.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i271/neecerie/IMG_0639.jpg

I have put besame powder in the powder compartment and well trained eyes will spot that the lipstick is also a besame, which fits in the case right where the orignal one did (I have the original lipstick case safely in storage)

Ok...thats number one...and all for today

Agreed. I figure if I buy a nice compact to use from Estee Lauder, or Chanel, etc. they will cost me $25-50. This cost a little over $20 and I will certainly get lots of use out of it so it's a good deal.

Does anyone else here have one similar to my 'Swinglok' purse one? I have never seen one anywhere else and find it so useful.

I don't own one but I saw one at the aforementioned antique mall going for $86.

Here's another Dorset compact, similar in style to the one Irish Rin posted at the top of this page. It doesn't close properly, though, and I'm not sure what i can do to fix it. It's never been used.

Here's a confetti lucite one I found this weekend on sale at a local antiques market!

http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb110/sbazcasper/vintage/DSCF0980.jpg

The antiques market had a ton of beautiful ones at fantastic prices, but none of them had that flip over metal cover inside AND a screen - they all just had either one of the other. I think loose powder compacts are pretty much useless otherwise. I know you can buy the screens, though - does anyone know where? I'd found a website a long time ago that has them but I can't seem to find it again now that I'm actually looking!

Is that why my loose powder leaked all over the inside of my purse? No screen....I assumed that metal cover was the screen. :o Wow, I feel kinda stupid now. Beautiful compacts by the way.

No, the metal cover should be adequate to keep the powder in the compact. The screen just filters the powder so you don't get too much on your puff, and so the powder doesn't puff out when you open the cover.

Usually my compacts have either/or, not both, and that's worked fine.

I'd really prefer both. The problem with having just a screen is that you still end up with a bunch of powder on your puff while the compact is shifting around in your purse. With just the metal cover and no screen, your puff stays clean in transit, but then it's easy to end up with too much powder on it when you go to apply.

My hair gal back in North Carolina presented me with this one day when I showed up for my appointment. I believe her exact words were, "I knew you liked old stuff, so I thought of you the minute I saw it!" lol Whatever, it's a nice little compact. I think I'll tuck breath mints inside it once I have it thoroughly cleaned! (Um, that gray square on the right is the mirror, which works I promise. I just caught the ceiling in the photo.)

Google (http://www.takeourword.com/TOW133/page2.html) is awesome! This etymology site says:

English in origin. The suffix -teen (as in thirteen, etc.) is simply the number ten in an unfamiliar guise. It gave rise, in the 17th century, to the noun teen, which was usually used in phrases like in the teens or in one's teens. Are you surprised that it appears so early? You may be surprised again to learn that teenager did not arise until the late 1930s or early 1940s, though teenage appeared first in 1921.

Sorry for the crappy quality, apparently my camera hates any kind of light that isn't daylight. I found this little treasure in a local antique store. I have not the slightest idea what time period its from. But it's quite darling although it's a bit tarnished- I think it adds to its "vintage" quality. I haven't put anything in it yet, as it doesn't have a screen. I love the delicate little flowers on the outside, and the way the mirror is made.

So many lovely compacts...it's like a preview of heaven.

How do you date compacts without any sort of maker's mark or writing on them? My mom found this in her attic recently and I've been scouring the internet looking for similar ones, but haven't found anything.

It's enamel with a jade piece on top:

inside there's a powder compartment and a mirror:

with a compartment for blush behind the mirror:

I hope no one minds if I share photos of a post-1950 compact - it's by Stratton and commemorates the Silver Jubilee in 1977. It's silver plated, never been used and comes with its sifter (sadly no puff, but that's easily rectified). I picked it up today at a local charity shop for a few pounds and I suspect it may be the first of many!

Ooh I've really enjoyed reading this thread from start to finish. I've wanted a pretty compact for quite a while now, but gave up on the idea after the local estee lauder 'orange lady' looked at me like I was bonkers when I started speaking about it.

I should learn not to listen and just go find one ... or two ...

I love the purse style ones with a space for lipstick, etc, particularly the volupte which even had the space behind the mirror. If I can find one in a music related design I'll be particularly over the moon

Goldfish- There is a neutral tone and a topaz tone that work amazingly together, and do a great 40's look. The green and blue are more 30's and 50's respectively. I love to use wild colours with a vintage look, it works better than one would think!

Ooo cool! I love it too. Very femme fatale/ black widow:
They are well known for the distinctive black and red coloring of the female of the species and for the fact that she will occasionally eat her mate after reproduction. The female black widow's venom is particularly harmful to humans (males almost never bite humans). The injection of venom from these species is a comparatively dangerous or lethal bite. (Wikipedia)

Wire9Vintage
03-20-2010, 11:54 AM
I believe you can only put loose powder in it. Most of those old compacts come with a little screen that goes over the powder, and you dab from that, which is almost like using a compact with pressed powder in it.

Am I correct, compact ladies? I, too, have put off buying myself a pretty compact, though I want one badly, because I'm a little unsure about getting it in working order. I did get my daughter a tiny little vintage Helena Rubenstein compact for Christmas, complete with puff and untouched rouge. But she doesn't want to mess up the H embossed in the rouge (her name is Helena, as well!).

I'd really like a vintage compact... they're just beautiful! But how much might I expect to pay for one... It would seem they're varied in price like just about everything but I'd specifically like one of the more elaborate ones with an inside door for the powder... maybe a rouge pot. Hi, Also keep checking the local antique shops and second hand stores. You never know where you'll find them. I've found ones for $5.00 to $20.00. And these are fairly elaborate ones or at least one tricky feature to them. I've been carrying vintage compacts for a couple of years now. I use the Coty AirSpun powder. It's been around since the '20's. Also it's just a very nice powder.
After you get to using them you'll hear a lot of stories from people. Mostly it's "My mother had one like that.".
Have fun.

Thanks, Mrs. C... I'm crossing my fingers for it but there's a lot of time left on the auction so I won't be surprised if it loose it...

I think I feel an anniversary present coming on, Fountain Pen Girl... We're celebrating our 1st in July and I hinted (ie told) him what I might fancy so we'll see what happens down the road. I've always kind of wanted something to collect and I couldn't ever think of anything that really felt right... Vintage compacts just might be it!

From experience you should put it in writing with a picture of exactly what you want & where he can buy it,detailed(but easy to follow) instructions where possiblelol
Oh & just a tip i always wait until the last few minutes to bid on anything & then put my max bid in, mostly works for me anyway:)

This is a compact I just got this past Saturday for $5.00.

I thought I would put this up just in case anyone was wondering about filling compacts being I've noticed it come up ocassionally.

Here I have removed the screen and cleaned out the remaining old powder.

I've just added some of my favorite loose powder to the compact.

Then just replace the screen.

Now I've simply replaced a new puff. You can usually get these at you favorite drug store. To get your powder just gently wipe and you will get a little powder through the screen. With the puff over the screen when the compact is closed keeps the powder contained. It's best to look for puffs that fit the opening in the screen to prevent leakage. I usually use new puffs and save the original ones for display purposes when I'm not using the compact. Especially if the original has never been used.

I also have compacts with the inner door which keeps the powder contained quite well.
Pardon me if I'm going over things you all know. I just thought this might help someone.:)

Just bought a box of this stuff today... I just started work a month or so ago at the drug store in town here (it's a very little town) and woe is me for temptation. I get a nice little discount and it's very hard to resist!!! We don't carry a LOT of stuff but knowing that we can order in almost anything in short order is horrible too! ;)

Ok, now you got me wondering. Is it a current run of the mill drug store or one of the old time drug stores that's survived over the years. The drug store where I get my powder I just visited today. It's been modernized over the years but has been in business for about 50 years. The pharmacist is the son of the original owner so it's still in the same family.
:offtopic: I really long for the old time drug stores with a lunch counter and soda fountain where you can get a real ice cream malt. Our last real soda fountain and ice cream shop closed about 3 years ago and I'm still having withdrawl.
Back to the subject. You'll love using the compacts. I like the fragrance of the AirSpun powder.

Me too! It smells old-fashioned but not heavy or too sweet!

Our store is an oldie but a goodie... No lunch counter or soda fountain though :( I'm not exactly sure how long it's been in business but it's not a big chain like Walgreens or CVS. There are only about... 6-ish locations total... more or less. So it's nice having the small-town longevity of a little drugstore around the corner with some of the benefits of a larger chain.

I've always loved drugstores... ever since I was a kid. Especially on the days I was off sick from school and we'd go in to get a prescription for me. So much stuff to look at!

That's a cute one! Hope you win the auction!

I check ebay several times a week for powder compacts like that but there aren't much of them and on the ones I like I usually get outbid
Tried to find nice ones in antique stores while I was in Berlin, but they were 10x times less beautiful than the ones on ebay and 10x as expensive lol

Are there any sites with a good selection of compacts other than etsy&ebay to stalk compacts?
