Thank you! Yeah, I made it with Truly Victorian's (http://trulyvictorian.netfirms.com/) pattern 101. It's actually not nearly as hard as it looks! The ruffles are all sewn on an overlay.
I'm wearing a bustle gown to Costume College next month. I'll post pics when the dress is all finished :)

It was a challenge geting the neckline to lay flat. The back buttons up, for some reason I dont like zippers all that much.
The trim is really a dark dark blue and looks so perfect with the fabric.
Im starting another dress hopefully today, not nearly as complicated as the frills I put on this one :)

Well, its kinda a Frankenstein dress.
The bulk of the pattern (see and sew # B4704 By Butterick) is from a $3 'modern' day dress I got at the fabric store. It had a clean vintage feel, so I used that as a base. The neckline, sleeves, and border around the bottom I added myself.
I never can stick to a pattern.

I'm so bad at taking pictures of my stuff but scout's honor, I'll do it tomorrow. Right now, I'm working on two dresses, one a early '50s swing dress, the other a reworking of a dress I made earlier this year that I just didn't like. I popped all of the stitches last night and I'm going to start over. Going to make it into more of a '40's style 2 piece dress, I also made a '50s style two piece dress last week which came out well. I'll take those pictures.

OK so I've come to this thread a little bit late, but I just wanted to tell you how wonderful this dress is!
Lauren, your bustle dress is great too. You know that over the past few months I've gone crazy for Edwardian/Titanic era outfits.
Well, now I've done it. You all have inspired me so much that I start sewing lessons next week. I'm just waiting for the patterns that I ordered to come in. I figured, instead of hunting all over the place for something that I kind of want, I might as well learn to sew and get exactly what I want. Of course I know this will take time. I found a little store in Cambridge and the woman who owns it was intrigued by my story of vintage collecting. She actually knows a few places in the area, that I did not know about, that sell vintage patterns. I am going to have private lessons three times a week, I have no patience for slow learning! I know it will take time, years, to get as good as I hope to be. But, Gerry the woman who will give me the lessons, is really happy to help. So, I guess my first Edwardian outfit won't be made 100 percent by me. But, I am so happy that not only did I find someone to give me private lessons during a week day, but also that she is very interested in my vintage clothes, and does know about Edwardian. I'm also glad that she is willing to make a dress that is more complicated. The other places I called would not let me bring in my own patterns, they were group lessons once a week. I figured if I was going to learn to do this, I was gonna go all out.
At some point I will probably ask you gals to recommend a sewing machine. For now, my mom is going to give me one that she bought last year that she hasn't been using at all. She knows something about dress making, and said the machine will do everything I want and need it to. Knowing me, I'll go out and buy one sooner than expected, but at least I'll have something to start with.
I look forward to posting my first creation, that is, if it's worthy of a post!

Congrats, ladies on your sewing classes!
Daisy, my favorite sewing machine brand is Phaff. They have great machines, and generally the sellers that have them will also offer tuneups. My serger, since I bought it new, came with a year of free service. The place I bought it from also offers free lifetime lessons. It's Baker's Sewing Center in Escondido, CA. I'm not sure if that's standard, but it certainly is a huge plus!
I'm still trucking along on my 1870's dress... getting close. Not sure if I want to share pics until it's all done, though.

Did you start your classes?? I am starting private lessons, I hope, this week. I opted for the private class because the woman who teaches them is willing to lead me through the making of a complete dress or two. The group classes that I found around my way give you patterns, and you never really get the one on one attention that I know my clumsy fingers are gonna need!
I'm interested in knowing how you are doing with it. I'm a little nervous that I just won't get it all.

Thank you. I was in full crunch-sewing mode, but I'm very pleased with how it's turning out.
Rosie - it's not beading, but a tassled trim. There will be beading once it's complete though.
Daisy - I'd love to bring it to the QM, but it's a little too early time-wise to be appropriate. I'd look sorely out of place when everyone else is strolling in their slim, non-corseted, non-petticoated, non-bustled evening gowns. (And it's also a hell of a lot to pack. :D )

Sure on the patterns Rosie, we'll be in touch. And thanks Decodoll. Yeah the button gives the coat a cape look that I dig. I have some vintage wool that I am going to make one more out of now that I have my practice ones out of the way.
I tend to like stiffer fabrics, so they both need a good pressin so theyll drape better. What threw me off was the honkin 5/8" seam allowance! MAN oh MAN :)

The lining is a stiff twill that I prolly should not have used and it still needs a good pressin, but it hangs great at the back of the shoulders.

I used my Mother's vintage wool for this coat. It turned out well. I LOVE the buttons.
I may have to put in a hook above the top button, cause they keep sliding making the coat look uneven.

LD (or anyone else who might want to chime in),
I notice that you and many others will often make several different pieces of one pattern, in one sewing spurt. (Does that make sense at all?)
Anyway, I am hoping to begin sewing soon...do you find that is the most efficient way to sew? So if you have a skirt pattern, you may make 3 or 4 skirts out of it at a time (using different fabrics, obviously?) Or do you skip around or work on different projects at the same time?
Just curious as to what habits you find best work for you...
Lady Day

When I am making something, I often make it a staple in my wardrobe. So when I sew, I tend to make two or three variations of something.
Yes I do, if the first one turns out well, tend to crank them out because I have just worked out the kinks in the design, I know how long it will take to finish, and Ive already picked out three or so types of fabrics that I would love to see the design in.
I also generally go fabric shopping with a particular garment type in mind. So Im nooking for a type of fabric and specific notations as well.
LD
LizzieMaine

Yep, I tend to do that too -- if I find a pattern I really like, I'll make it up over and over again, trying to come up with different variations in fabric, trim, and so forth. There's one pattern in particular that I've made up four times so far -- even though the instruction sheet has pretty much disintegrated from being handled so much. Fortunately, I've memorized how to assemble it by now!
I do try to take a rest, though, between projects. I find that if I try to do too many one right after another, I get overconfident and don't pay as close attention to detail as I should and end up making mistakes that have to be picked apart and redone. Like, for example, sewing the pieces of a skirt together so that one panel is facing wrong-side-to -- when you start doing that stuff, it's a sign that it's time to take a break...
Rosie
08-11-2006, 01:21 PM
Yes, What Lizzie and LD said. When I sew somthing I really like, I may make a few of them but a bit varied. I made a dress a few weeks ago that I really liked so, I made a dress of the same type (I don't use patterns really) but changed the neck line and made the skirt portion more flare.
Like Lizzie said, taking a break is essential, I cut my finger open during a sewing marathon, not paying attention.
I usually buy fabric I really like then find outfits to turn them into.

Thanks for all the compliments ladies. Yeah JBD, circle skirt = windy day. I thought the design was great and different too. I have never seen one like it. it says its an 'easy to sew' dsign, and it is, but there is so much prep on the edges. I just pipped everything. I loves piping.
And Rosie, I can send you the pattern to borrow, thats NO prob! That invite goes to everyone. I never use the pattern, I just trace it out on tracing paper, so if you all do the same thing, you all are more than welcome to borrow my megar pattern collection :)

This happens to me on a regular basis; add this to my falling down issues, and I'm a mess.
As for using the same pattern several times in a row, I just completed a pretty 1940s dress, then used the same pattern again and screwed it up really bad. I ended up having to turn the dress into a skirt, but I don't like it at all as a skirt. It kind of makes me sick because I used spectacular 1940s fruit print cotton, which just doesn't cut it as anything but a house dress.
I think I'll go cry now.

The same thing happened to me! I picked out this gorgeous tiki/bali high fabric and just murdered the dress pattern. I felt lucky that I even managed to get a darn skirt out of it.
I want to sew so badly, but I'm in the midst of getting my house in order--painting one week, cleaning out the closet the next, etc. that I find I have little time for sewing projects.
And I'm desperate to make that long housecoat/dressing robe after I lost the perfect one on eBay. Sigh!

lol I think we are all in that boat. Knowing I was going to be home for the summer, I bought something like 20 bundles of fabric, hoping to get dresses, skirts, a whole mini wardrobe made. Summer is winding down, school starts in two weeks :( and I've managed 2 skirts and 5 dresses. So, in addition to all of the things I wanted to get done over the fall, I can probably fill the entire thread myself.

Wow Rosie that's still pretty good! I have a ton of patterns and fabrics in the sewing room and my "to do" list grow daily! I don't feel to bad about it-- one of the nice things about sewing vintage clothes is that they aren't "going out of style". I really hate working on patterns that take me longer than 3 days. Most of the garments I make are fairly simple.
This was not. I was totally surprised by that too. Man, it was a pain getting the shoulders to fall correctly on me. They left that out of the pattern: "If you get ponches near the shoulder corners, you look stupid". I had to figure that one out on my own :)
The time consuming part for me is seams. I HATE raw seams, so I tend to zig zag, or surge a seam.

Very nice cape, LD! (Hey, in my book, it's a cape.) I agree with you, this drapey things need a lot of work for that "effortlessly elegant" effect. Like what women used to go through with their shawls!
I think the buttonholes look great. I've got those coming up on my Vintage Vogue suit, too. I didn't even know what they were when I saw them on the Lilli Ann suit I got on ebay a couple years ago! But now I really like the look. Were they hard, or was it just tough learning the new technique?
What material did you use? What lining, and interlining if any? I'm looking to make a princess-seamed coat sometime in the future, so I'm always trolling for ideas.

Well thanks for the grand comment on my fabric button holes. I like the look as well, but will pay more attention to the instructions on assembly next.
The fabric for the coat is sort of a fizzy cord harringbone. It has a streach (ick) to it, but it is a lovely look, so I dealt with it. I tend to line my garments with cotton prints (this one is a calico) because I like the breathability. I use fuseable interfacing (love that stuff), and I totally missed my serger with this project.

I haven't sewn in about three weeks . I go back to work next week :( so, I've lined up lots of projects to do until then. If I don't leave town this weekend, that is what I will be doing.
Lined up to be done before school is a polka dot 50s style dress (I have lots of polka dot fabric left). http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l74/RoseMeditative/f9_1_b.jpgA green silk dress, a three piece set: blouse, straight skirt and circle skirt. If I get the sketch correct, the dress Lady Day made that looked apron-ish, (that was soooo cute) and *maybe* a cape like item with matching skirt http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l74/RoseMeditative/hiwaistskirtandcape.jpg.

The only reason you are marring the evil man is because your father is having financial problems. You are not suposta know that, but you overheard a conversation they had. You were gonna marry the young count (or at least wanted to), who youve know since you were children, but he married three years ago. Sadly his wife died in child birth. You were there to console him and love blossomed yet again :)

Lauren, thanks for the compliment! What looks like beadwork in the picture (because of the soft focus is actually stretch sequins, the kind tube tops were made of in the 70s. I just assembled the stretch sequins and chiffon. However, I did make the applique on the center front of the bra. It's hard to see in the picture.

Lauren and Lady Day and Leslie,
you each made such wonderful outfits!
Well done to all three of you. I'm inspired.
I always have big plans, but I'm kinda slow to realize them.
This blouse was started in summer, and I just
today finished it. I always put off those darn
button holes! :p The fabric is a vintage hawaiian print
I fell in love with, but I only had a yard+ and I wanted
to match the print.
You gotta love those thrifty 40s patterns--they sure
did a lot with very little fabric. I had to make
the blouse sleeveless and buy a modern fabric
for the collar, but I'm not unhappy with the result.
I'm hoping we'll get one of those freakishly warm
fall days and I'll get to wear it at least once this year.

Anna, that is adorable! And thank you so much for the compliment!
Leslie, the fabric I used is a vintage eyelet for the bodice and overskirt and the underskirt is all a white semi sheer cotton I picked up at a thrift store- I think it was supposed to be a curtain fabric. All the trim is about a 4" eyelet trim and I used about 40 yards on the dress! And little ribbon rosettes are at the front which I bought a little baggie of :) Thanks!

I think that might be just the ticket. I have green eyes, very blonde hair and a lot of other red dresses.
I need to get out to Joann's this weekend. I have a coupon for 50% any regular priced fabric but not sure when it expires.
Yes, I'd agree, emerald green or even a silver. My vote is the green.

I'm going to attempt it for QM 2007! I am trying to decide what color champagne, ruby, emerald? What do you think?
My vote is for emerald green or deep turquoise/teal. As a fellow green-eyed blonde, those colors are favorites of mine to wear :)

Lady Day, I know this is a little late in coming, but I just love that black and white dress you made. It is the perfect day dress, well done:)
Those Barbie's are so cute!! What well dressed little glamour girls. They certainly do have a better wardrobe than me!
Barbiegirl, I think that dress would look great in an emerald green. Some rhinestone brooches/clips at either shoulder would add that perfect vintage touch. A lot of the new dresses I've seen coming out are showing that 30's and 40's style. Bias cut, liquid satin dresses with just a touch of rhinestones at the shoulder. I have a liquid satin dress from the 30's that I'm planning to wear at the Queen Mary. I was thinking of buying some clips to add to the arm area, just to give it a little more pizazz. But, the sleeves are very intricate, so I'm not sure if they will look right.
ARGH! I was supposed to start my sewing lessons over the summer, but things got so hectic, I had to put them on hold. I wish I could have learned before the QM so I could finally have a perfect day dress. OH Well, there's always next year. You ladies are all so talented, you are really motivating me to finally clear the time in my schedule to learn how to sew. But it will have to wait until after the QM, just too busy at the moment....

Those are great!! I sew for dolls more than I do people. Making custom outfits for vintage and antique doll's in my so-called "job".
Any pictures you could post CherryRed? I'd love to see someone else's work. I have made a few Gene outfits too but most of those have been as gifts so I don't have any I can show.
Which kind of dolls do you sew for?
Thanks Rosie, Daisy and Maisie!
Maisie I love the Scarlett doll too, I don't have one but have often come close to buying the version in the green and white toile-type fabric.

You guys know I'm making the pants for this:
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n206/elainaflessas/50.jpg
I finished them today. They suck  Now in seriousness, they look cute, like they're supposed to, but there is something seriously wrong. I seldom mess up a garment this bad. First off, there is no wearing ease. They're skintight, okay. Fine. Waist fits like a dream, legs fit good. This is where the good ends.
I either got fatter in the last week or I need to wait another week and do a pregnancy test. Either way the tummy is too tight, they can't be worn with undies, else the zip doesn't zip up. I fitted the pattern before I started, and the end result didn't work. Also huge problem was the effect in the crotch. For some reason this pattern left a truly undesirable effect. So unlike most Simplicity patterns, these just were a "uh okay". If you make them, just keep in mind you may want to do some adjusting, and more then what I did. The pants and the crotch issue seems to be pretty common when I asked around to some sewing friends, they've all mentioned that they needed to be about 2 sizes larger everywhere but the waist, and it's a design problem (or so it seems).
I'll try to dig out the bad camera I do have and get some pictures. Due to modesty here, I won't be in them.
Lauren

10-08-2006, 09:03 PM
Elaina, can you add a small piece to the sides? Like an upside down V? It shouldn't be so noticeable. I've taken a piece out of capris to make them more pencil-y I'm thinking doing the opposite would be okay.
I think I'm going to get this pattern. (It comes in plus size so, yes, I'm going to sew from pattern.) I want that jacket. Do you ladies think I could lengthen it without a problem?
Lady Day

Sure! I dont see why that would be a problem. I just want the blouse pattern, that is fabulous!

Dragging out the pattern for the jacket...you should be able to wit no problem. Comes in an upper front and sleeve, upper back and sleeve, lower front, lower back, facings and linings. Individual pieces there is no line to lengthen, but I don't see where it would be much of a problem.
As to my capris, I know what you're talking about, adding a gore, like one needs to do on some corsets. It wouldn't be noticeable at all, since I don't wear anything that high up on my body shirt wise. Right now I've kicked them (literally) into a corner, and they're not done being punished. Although that was not the only problem, the center front seam does something terribly unseemingly to my person, so the sides aren't the only problem. Even enlarging the sides didn't cure it (I did the gores in a contrasting fabric to see if it would help already) and it's a problem for me in the pattern itself. Part of the reason I seldom make pants from patterns. Sometimes the adjustment doesn't work. I have a petite body and a long inseam and crotch. It tends to make for an interesting construction in fitted pants. So I knew better then to make them, but oh well. Funny thing is, I don't like pants and I really don't like capris. My sister loved them anyway, and Christmas is around the corner. But thanks for the suggestion.
The shirt, on the other hand, IS awesome. Looks good, fits good, and went together great. I got this pattern for the shirt and I was happy with that.

Thanks for the warning on the Simplicity pattern. I'll be careful while sewing if it is ever in stock at either of my local JoAnn's.
You could lengthen that coat by a few inches with no problem. I wouldn't try for knee length unless you want to re-draft the whole pattern though.
Rosie
10-09-2006, 05:50 PM
Thanks ladies. I was thinking knee or a little below the knee length though, I think I may make a shorter version in that houndstooth, that is VERY cute.
Elaina, sorry about the capris. I hate when I work on something and it just doesn't come out well. :(
Elaina
10-09-2006, 06:33 PM
Eh right now it's fine. I have an 11 year old sister who's 5 inches shorter and a few sizes smaller, so if I mess it up too bad, she's just as happy to get it and wear it. She's in Podunk, Tn (sorry no offense to you in TN), so her "latest fashion" is printed t's.
It's all about fashion at that age, and I have better taste then my mother, so she's like "What'd you mess up on for me this time?" I drag them all with me when I go and visit, and just hem and adjust if needed on my mom's machine.
So yea, bummer for me, party bonus for her.

Thanks very much Ladies...
It was a simplicity pattern but not from the site that you show, though it has some really cool stuff.
http://www.sewingpatterns.com/simplicity-patterns.html
She really wanted something a little more evening gown-ish but I wanted to start off with something that was cotton blends.
I tried making her a bonnet because I got a free pattern off of the simplicity website for it but she seems to think it is a dumb idea and just wants her hair done up. Apparently, she thinks I am a better hairdresser than milliner.
Sunny
10-17-2006, 08:34 AM
I should have clarified - Sense & Sensibility (Jennie Chancey) has licensed her patterns to Simplicity. They're numbers 4055 (http://www.simplicity.com/dv1_v4.cfm?design=4055) (dress) and 4052 (http://www.simplicity.com/dv1_v4.cfm?design=4055) (chemise, short stays, and chemisette). There's a lot of directions and how-to's on the website, as well as on the forum. She's been selling the patterns for years, so there's a lot of info there. ;)
And for an 11-year-old, cottons are a lot better idea anyway. ;) But I want to see your bonnet!

Lauren, from the curiousity of a lighting designer, did you have green light shining on you from your left side? I love the effect and am wondering whether that was intentional, or if you have flourescent lights on as well as the shop lights? Maybe a tv or computer? I love the effect of the green-tinged shadows and undertone! I might like to use that!

As for the bonnet, little girls will do anything to look a little older. She probably thinks a bonnet will make her look too childish. She'll probably feel all grown up with her hair done up all fancy. Either way, the costume looks great!

Thank you for the compliment :D The film was an art-house one called A Descent Into Glamour by the artist, Giovanna Maria Casetta (who is modelling in the photo - shot at the Great Eastern Hotel in London).
Wow! How many yards of fabric did it take??? How did she WALK in it??! It's really stunning!
The train took around 100 yards and the gown itself only two, plus a yard for the integral corset. I must admit that by the end of that photo shoot I hated the gown! LOL!
We had a 'moment' during the shoot, which made me have a face like this :rage:
Bearing in mind that the cheapest rooms in the hotel cost ¬£500 per night (what's that? Almost a thousand dollars?), you'd think that the guests would have an amount of d?©corum, wouldn't you? Actually, this links in quite nicely with what I was saying on the 'well attired lady' thread.
Several well heeled guests were rude to us as we did the shoot. They'd been informed by the management that for the duration of the shoot, the back staircase that we were using would be off limits but did they listen? Of course not. There is often a prevailing attitude that says;
"I have loads of money, therefore your rules do not apply".
My prevailing attitude is that ok, but when you fall base over apex down the stairs, don't come crying to me! :p
Anyway, one woman came into the hotel with her dog, who promptly cocked his leg against the baby grand at the bottom of the stairwell and urinated all over the train, which was at this time, draped over the piano. <le gasp>
Most people would be mortified, embarrassed, apologetic and would grab their dog and try to come to an arrangement. But not this woman, she just looked me in the eye and completely ignored both me and the dog.
I can't tell you how angry I was. I lodged a formal complaint against her with both the management and the head of security, plus sent the bill for the dry cleaner to her room.
People like that really, really annoy me. Manners cost nothing and I don't care how much money someone has, if they have not even the most basic courtesy, then they are very poor indeed.
Yes! It was super easy! I love TV patterns, and I admit to being addicted. Between those and the Janet Arnold books I'm basically set for life. I'd love to see the things you've made from their patterns!
I'll post some more photos...when I find them!

I am very proud of this garment, more so for construction than anything. I guess bias tape makes you feel like you can do anything!
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h76/shelleymariejo/DSC00275.jpg
This was such a strange fabric! A linen herringbone, that looks like wool! Its a very loose weave, so I had to seam all edges in the tape. Man bias tape makes everything look swell.
I spent 40 min in Britex Fabric store looking for a nice cotton lining. Had two sales people helping me with the project, and I settled for this funky flower print. The buttons are even vintage and I thing go rather swell with the entire thing.

I also made a pencil skit and will make a vest and hat as well from the leftover linen (but I wont wwear them all together, I dont want to look like a potato sack lol).

Agreed. I love to see things that other people have made - it can be quite inspirational. And Rosie, polka dots are so sweet - that outfit looks wonderful. Do we get to see you modelling it?
Lady D - great new av, fab new jacket! I absolutely adore it. I'm waiting for a vintage swing jacket pattern to arrive; I hope mine turn out as well as yours.

Thanks ladies. I'm hoping to make a duct tape twin model of myself some time soon so that the clothes will hang better and not look so shapeless. I don't usually have someone here with me to take pics and the ones I take in the full length mirror always come out so dark and fuzzy. :(
Rosie, do you have a self timer on your camera? If so, you could position it and then pose away! :D

Ehrm. I've been in a really weird sewing mood lately, so these are my latest projects. I don't know why, I just really felt like making some giant shiny plastic dresses.

This is the Queen of Hearts. I've got a big crown and a pink flamingo covered in rhinestones with an ostrich-feather tail to go wiith it.
Both dresses are built to go over these, which were just made from the Simplicity hoop skirt & crinoline patterns.

Please ignore the hair and makeup. My fiance got a hold of my Kevyn Aucoin book and was feeling creative.

After my initial anger had subsided, I was philosophical; the gown was finished, I'd handed it over and I'd been paid for it. To be honest, I was more miffed at the lack of manners than the fact that the dog had used the gown as a toilet.
I hope you'll post more of your projects! I adore seeing the TV patterns in action.

Thank you. I love yours that you just posted pictures of. When you work with PVC, do you use a teflon presser foot? I used to spray everything with silicone spray until I discovered those feet - they're a boon!
Here's one of my Victorian gowns - the pattern is a not very good Simplicity one but the petticoat, which can't be seen (!) is the same as the one Lauren made...but in black.
Kevin is wearing (ooh hark at me, I sound like a fashion show voice over!) a coat that I made him a few years ago. It was inspired by a 16th century Polish military overcoat but I added a few Gok-touches...including suspender clips to fasten it with (as in the things you hold stockings up with!). That's actually a really bad image of Kevin as the coat looks awful - too short for those huge boots he is wearing and his mask is wonky!

Here's how handsome he really is!

He was crowned King of the Ball shortly after that photo was taken.
As a little side note - nothing to do with making clothes but really sweet nonethess. Every year we get together with Simon and Ruth, plus several other friends to go camping for a weekend. This year, Ruth's mother (who has been a vegan for about 35 years) made me the most scrummy vegan chocolate birthday cake....and she didn't even come to the camping trip! I thought that was so adorable of her.
Here's another view of my gown:

Very nice Gok! I'm debating on working on this, and then debating on if I want to send it to a professional pleater or do it myself (which is a HUGE pain), AND making my own frogs because I'll be darned if I can find them THAT big (another pain):

I have a friend that has made it in a velveteen blend and did some minor alterations. I know it took her less then a week to make the entire thing (granted I'm fussier then she is about the inside looking perfect, but I sew far more then she does). It's a repro of an Oscar de la Renta coat, and the details are where it's all at, as well as all the work.
She also claims it's really easy to put together once you're in the middle of it, and the coat looked good completed, and not at all homemade looking.

LOL! I know exactly how you feel fleur! I hugely screwed up a basic circle skirt (OK, it had a bit of a waist band, but still!). It's embarrassing. I know I just need more practice, but for that I'd need more hours in the day. Or self-discipline. lol
Oh, but I did make this, and it was certainly 40's inspired, believe it ot not:

I get my modern patterns on sale at JoAnn's or Hancock fabric stores. I'm cheap, so I always wait until they're $1 each, not 1.99. I also wait for Vogue to be about 3.25 before I buy. Vintage ones, many have luck on Ebay and local thrift stores, and I got one yesterday at a bookstore here called Half Price Books, but it was for one from the 70's and I paid a whopping 25 cents for it.
Sewing is just practice. If you can't sew, many sewing machine shops (as well as JoAnns and Hancocks) offer classes. Other then those, like the shoe ad: just do it.

hey thanks for the advice. there is a joann's fabrics right by my job i'll go after work! and i totally get you on being cheap! hahaha i'm the same way!
I try to buy as few patterns from the UK as possible as they are hideously expensive, plus the waiting time on ordered ones is usually more than ordering from the States. Vintage patterns are almost always cheaper from across the pond. Even with shipping it's cheaper (most Ebay sellers charge around $5 to ship up to around five patterns to the UK, whereas most UK sellers charge the same to ship just one pattern domestically). With the exception of one or two sellers, US ones tend to be much nicer to deal with. This doesn't surprise me at all. When I was in LA a couple of years back I was stunned by the politeness of people in shops and restaurants. Customer care seemed to be something our US cousins excel at. I wish I could say the same of over here; unfortunately, surly and lazy attitudes often prevail - I can't tell you how many shops have lost my custom because of SAs that are more concerned with the love life of their best friend than serving me. Pfftttt.
As I mentioned before, new patterns are incredibly expensive here; the average price being $30-$35 (Vintage Vogue usually cost even more). I'm amazed that you can get new patterns for just $1.99.

When I was in London, I was amazed at how ridiculously expensive everything was. There's some nice stuff, but Paris was cheaper.
Vintage Vogue is the same price regular vogue is. I just bought one on sale for $2.99. Strange how it works that way isn't it?

Wow Lauren, that is magnificent. You did such an amazing job. OK, I know I've been saying this for months, but I've got to start those darn sewing lessons, so by the time I'm 70 I might be able to make something like that. It's just so much easier to buy the fabric and the pattern and take it to this professional tailor in the next town over, and have her do it for me. She's really amazing, does wedding and pageant gowns, and has a vast knowledge of the vintage style. But, I really do need to learn to do it myself.
Nice job though, it truly is incredible. Really like the head piece too. I hope you get to wear it out soon.

Lauren does do amazing work, but really, sewing is a matter of taking your time and reading everything, then alot of paitence. Lauren has a heck of a lot more paitence then I do: I'm willing to bet a good chunk is handsewn (something I abhor.)
Lauren

Thank you very much, ladies!
Yes, Elaina is right. I've been sewing a long time and went to school for fashion design- and while I admit to not always reading directions anymore it really is what you should do as guidelines- when you're starting out you just have to! And I made the mistake early on of trying to accomplish a pattern that was much more difficult than I could actually make. If you stay at beginner when you're starting it will be much more fun because you'll feel like you're accomplishing things instead of ending up frustrated! Something that also helped was having people help me step by step and explain to me why what I was doing was necessary. Like seam allowances- until I started taking quilting classes with my mom I never paid attention to them and would wonder why my dresses never went together right! It's kind of a pain to sew sometimes because you need at least a little math, but really, sewing has helped me with my basic measuring and arithmetic- I'm still awful but at least now I know I need it for the basics. You can do it, Daisy! And the fun part is when you make it yourself you can make it on your time frame, the way you want it, to fit you and at the end you can say "I made this!"
Oh, and I also really hate handwork- unfortunately it's a necessity with some of these period gowns, but I make sure to do it so you can't really see my stitches! My blind hem on my sewing machine is my best friend :D
Elaina
11-27-2006, 12:31 PM
Now after the basic stuff, I have always suggested going with the next step up from your skills IF you have the paitence. Easy is always good to whip one out, and the ones that don't say anything at all, when a new sewer, usually have a technique or 2 that is a bit more advanced then the easy ones, but can be easily done (if you take your time).
The nice thing about the internet, too, is that if you DO run over a technique you don't understand you can find something on it. Or ask someone who sews. My problem used to be my mom sewed for 40 some odd years and did it faster then I could. I felt I should be able to go that fast. I cou;dn't and spent more time ripping out until I sat down and sewed every day until I got where I wanted to on speed. I now sew faster then she does (I too took classes in college for fashion design, I just took this year off) and I got a machine for the house I wanted to sew on, I didn't have to settle on. (So I now sew faster on my treadle then my mom does on her electric).
I need to drag out my blind hemmer sometime. I'm sure my son would appreciate that, since he usually is my blind hemmer.

lol lol lol That's too funny!
And Elaina has wonderful advice! :D
Lauren, that gown is wonderful. I bet you swish well in it! I love the cabinet card too - do you have a template that you use or is it a case of scanning and bastardizing a real one?
Elaina - shame on you...that's child labour that is! Heheh!
Daisy - get thee to a dressmaking course now! Honestly, Lauren's right, there is no substitute for making things yourself. It's such a great feeling (and you get to have clothes that fit properly too!). :D
