Television history is replete with great shows that were cancelled far to soon for far too many bad reasons. Many of these are soooo good they become instant cult classics or spawn fan clubs that will live forever. What's the one cancellation that leaves you sleepless at night wondering where the story went and how the characters fared?

A part of my heart died with STTOS and I hadn't felt that way again until "Frefly" and more recently "The Event". But that's just network television. HBO has an entire boneyard devoted to great shows killed in their cribs... "Carnivale" comes to mind.

According to the Wikipedia entry for this series, the lead pilot character, Jake, was a former Flying Tiger, yet (as Wikipedia's own page on "Flying Tigers", linked to in the same sentence as the claim is made, shows) the AVG came later than the events of this series are supposed to have taken place (it opens in 1938). As I type, memory reminds me that Sky Captain was also referred to as having previously flown with "the American Volunteers", in a plot also set in 1938. The latter I've always written off as being an alternate timeline (makes sense in the context of a Diselpunk sci-fi affair), but what's the excuse for the former show? Is it just a plot mistake, or was there some prior organisation to which the term has been retrospectively applied (as it was by many to the entire USAAF 14th, following the disbandment of the AVG when the US officially entered the war against Japan)?

As a by the by, I remember watching this series, and the similar Bring 'em back alive! when they were originally broadcast in the Eighties. Are they worth catching again, or am I better to just remember them as good fun?

The Game of Thrones Iron Throne is unlike anything you've ever seen before. This custom chair is designed to mimic the seat of kings in the Seven Kingdoms. On the show, the Iron Throne was constructed by Aegon I Targaryen, the first king of the Seven Kingdoms. He made it from the swords surrendered by his enemies. Legend has it, it's made of a thousand swords that took 59 days to hammer out into a throne. Spikes and jagged edges in every direction make this one very intimidating lounge. Our version is constructed of hand-finished, hand-painted fiberglass and fire-proof resin that's been twisted and turned to re-create the Game of Thrones design. Now's your chance to own this very special custom-made piece of furniture that, by all appearances, is more closely related to art. Extra large in size, it measures over 7' in height, close to 6' in depth and 5.5' in width. Calling it "impressive" is an understatement.

From Wiki:
Generation War tells in three 90-minute episodes the story of five German friends, aged around 20, on their different paths through Nazi Germany and World War II. The narrative spans over five years starting in 1941 Berlin, when the friends meet up for a last time before embarking on their journeys, enthusiastically vowing to meet up again the following Christmas. The story's conclusion is set in a time shortly after the end of the war in 1945/46.

“The Tower” is a two-parter based on Uwe Tellkamp’s novel, Der Turm (2008), about life in East Germany in the years before the fall of the Berlin Wall.

In total contrast to the current trendiness of Gatsby and friends ;)
I seem to enjoy old movies about working class men having moral/existential upheavals.
Taxi driver is probably the best of all, but keeping it 1930s-1950s:
On the Waterfront is my favourite, but I have also enjoyed films with Jean Gabin like La jour se Leve, Le Quai des brumes(a bit tedious) and Moontide(just a bit cheesy).
I would appreciate some recommendations, are there other good vintage films about the working man out there?

Later this month, my father and I will be doing the California Zephyr from Emeryville to Chicago. It's something we've always wanted to do. One thing I thought might be fun was to assemble a collection of classic train-related movies for the trip, but I'm coming up short on ideas.
Any suggestions from the Lounge?
Thanks!
