Color Crazy?

For some reason all of a sudden I will have an urge to get clothing and stuff in a certain color.
Yesterday I wanted Gray pants. Like Dove Grey or Gray.
I have found over the years I am always about 3 to 6 months ahead of what suddenly becomes the hot colors. Is anyone else like this and are you suddenly wanting Dove Gray? lol [huh] or maybe another color. I found a nice pair of pants yesterday but they didn't fit right so now I am on a mission for some nice vintage gray pants.
I am also thinking pink top to go with grey pants?

ah foofoo... you are not alone in your hankering for grey - i just today purchased the most beautiful wool crepe fabric in a soft just blue-grey for a 40's trouser sewing project... as well as some great forest green silk shantung & the most amazing cornflower blue vintage japanese silk

and a dusty or deep antique rose pink would be a perfect colour to team with grey

Shantung fabric is probably my favorite material. Seersucker a close 2nd. I love Brocades also. I flat love texture. I am a very tactile person. Maybe since I have fairly bad eyesight.

All sounds devine. Even a nice gray skirt. Silver gray even.

I am a very tactile person. Maybe since I have fairly bad eyesight.

i completely understand the tactile factor - touch is such an important sense...

i come from a long line of folk who like to make things with their hands - so the tactile desire is a built in thing for me i think... as much as i adore fabric colour, drape & design if it doesn't feel wonderful to the touch its as if something's missing...

i'm thinking deeper greens and dusky mid-lilacs would work wonderfully with grey as well

It is very interesting that you have a hankering for grey. The design field generally charts the color trends for the year and releases a lot of materials and reasoning for why we are drawn to colors year after year. After working in the industry for long time I've begun to see that something happens when people are faced with uncertain or trying times. Greys, Blues, some reds, lots of neutrals. They tend to desire "safe" or perhaps more conservative color schemes. Grey was a big part of the 80s (during that downturn as well). I work for the corporate world and I have definitely seen people much more conservative in their choices. While a year or two ago it was about earthy and green schemes not grey. Nowadays it is not about having fun or being playful, it is about seeming solid, well grounded and here for the long haul.

I think in my own attire I tend to follow this notion as well. My playful buying of gorgeous dresses is nil and I purchase simple pieces (if any!) that will serve me for a longer time and go with more things I already own.

I find your post interesting. During the Depression colors seemed to be in fashion. I guess to try and cheer others up.
Think depression glass which was given away in pretty colors as Premiums like at shows and places.
I wonder if this means the modern person thinks differently and/or less bouncing back as much as Depression people. (Don't think I am conveying what I am trying to say well?)[huh]
Conservative, classy dress IMHO should always be in style though.

I've often tried to figure out whether interior design follows fashion, leads or is simply in step. I agree that classics are always in fashion. Maybe I am just reacting to not having a whole lot of spare change to buy things that may or may not be "in style" (color wise) one day to the next.

Very interesting about the Great Depression comment. Perhaps this trend indicator per the design world is a more recent phenomena. I also think the speed of trends (color or otherwise) has sped up, if you will. That may be part of this need to consume more, or be part of the next big thing that generally permeates today's society (not all thankfully!).

I believe the Quote you stated below is exactly what is drawing more and more (me also personally) to vintage when one does decide to do a purchase. I feel you generally get a much better product for the money. Better made and/or sewn of better material. I figure if something has lasted for 30, 40, 50 years it has potential anyway.

Maybe I am just reacting to not having a whole lot of spare change to buy things that may or may not be "in style" (color wise) one day to the next.

I spent so much time in black that I find myself wanting to rebel like hell and make sure I have clothes in EVERY color except orange. Right now I'm really itching to find a great red dress that isn't "too much", and I have my eye on a pretty pink dress for the office. So far I have neither so I won't stop until I get them lol
Though I find myself now almost as attracted to blue as I was to black. Completely by accident I seem to be acquiring more blue dresses than anything else. I want to make sure as much as I can now that I DON'T buy anything blue (unless it's amazing) because I don't want a wardrobe as monochrome as the one I had before!

Wow! Thanks for reviving this thread, because thought it was just me becoming a little (more) pixillated. Over the past couple of months I've been having almost cravings (bizarre, I know) for things in a certain colour which I've been describing as brick red, and I'll be damned if I've been able to find in anything bar one sweater in that colour. Even fabric so I could sew myself something! Nyet. On the upside I also have cravings now for claret/burgundy (to go with my navy blue things) and hunter green (to go with taupe or tan items).

I spent decades, too, in almost nothing but black, but since beginning to dress "vintage-y" I've expanded into blues in a big way. I have told myself, stop! no more blue items of clothing! My "won't touch" colours are yellow, purple and pink, and I try to stay away from grey (near my face, anyway) as it looks horrid with my complexion.

I find that every season or so I start to really lust over a look, a color, an article of clothing, or whatever and despite all of my hunting I can never find it. Generally a season or two later it's everywhere though, or the next year if it's a seasonal specific thing. The last time this happened was a black, long sleeved, knitted, turtleneck dress that hit below the knee, and for the life of me I could only find cowl necked mini dresses, we'll see if I can find one next year haha.

Oh, yes, it certainly does appeal! I used to drool over one very similar Stop Staring dress (in blue, with white kick pleats and collar), but the sad fact is that anything that fitted on my bottom half would be, to put it mildly, not very flattering (All that meat and no potatoes!). I do love it though. Thanks for the post!
