TLC to Air 'Wives With Beehives' Special on Women Living Like It's the 1950s.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/tlc-air-wives-beehives-special-401265

Produced by GRB Entertainment, Wives With Beehives follows four women who have decided to live their lives and run their households as if it was still the 1950s. Not only does this mean adhering to a strict moral code of the buttoned-up decade, the women dress and style their titular hair as if the 21st century never happened.

Derision or admiration for this project?

I can see them now, schlumping downstairs in a rump-sprung corduroy bathrobe to get the kerosene stove lit, bringing in the frozen milk from the milkbox, finding out there's no Nescafe left in the jar, and then slumping down in a kitchen chair sucking on a Pall Mall to get enough energy to start the day.

Oh wait, that's what the fifties were like around here. I suspect they won't be doing that.

I wonder if hubby will have a good union job down at the mill?

In all seriousness, though, what gets me about shows like this is the assumption that "The Fifties" were middle-class suburbia to the exclusion of all else. There were a lot more Kramdens in the actual real-life fifties than there were Cleavers.

I know some of these folks.

The ironic thing is that there isn't a beehive in sight! Reality show puns keep getting worse and worse.

"Once the network picked the girls we got the go ahead to film the pilot. We spent a lot of time over the summer filming it. I cannot give you all the details (yet) of what we filmed, but it was quite an experience. I learned first hand what goes into making a show like this. I will never be able to watch "reality" TV the same way again! While the people are real, the situations are sometimes not. They really are like the Wizard of Oz behind the curtain. So please, when you watch in on December 27th remember that. I trust that you all know the real me and can tell what is and what is not real. They won't let us see it before the air date, so we will be watching it right along with all the nation."

This is EXACTLY what I said to myself when I saw the promo for this show.

I actually feel sort of bad for the folks on this show because the promo makes them look pretty ditzy. I happen to know the young newlywed couple featured on the show and they are very, very sweet kids.
