I have 1,000 words in, which isn't much, and have an outline for a plot. As this is my first undertaking, I'm a bit overwhelmed. But I'm going to try to have fun with it.
What's strange is I keep opening the "notes" app on the iphone to jot down ideas that come to me when I'm not at the computer!

And I have several great scenes stored in my head which I think will be the highlights of the book, that will be a great relief to me when put on paper. But sadly, the time for them won't emerge until about the 35,000th word or so. I'm finding it hard to not look forward to that moment.

As for publishing, as a novice effort, I plan to send my manuscript to be critiqued by some friends before considering giving myself the green light. But no shame in saying "I wrote a book", whether or not it gets published or I even submit it.

It will be one month on the 25th.
7200 words where it sits. I've spent an hour on one paragraph tonight!

I'm currently a writer for my school paper while I work on my Associates, but I plan on having a career in journalism.

I'm back at the Lounge after an extensive hiatus! Lots of health problems and a brand new job kept me away for awhile, but I FINALLY have some really awesome news to share.

I am now represented by a literary agent for my historical fiction! It's been something I've been working toward since, oh, high school? :)

I also had a non-fiction book published by the History Press last year, too, called Nebraska POW Camps: A History of World War II Prisoners in the Heartland.

Wow, congrats!

That is great news, both the agent and the non fiction book. Accomplishments most definitely. You should be very pleased and proud! I hope the new job is good, and that health is all squared away.

Your sample at Amazon reads well, I hope it takes off. Very interesting subject!

Thanks so much!!! Health is always a challenge (I have rheumatoid arthritis) but I'm thankful for good days. :)

I'm also pleased with the new job - I'm the editorial assistant for two academic journals in the humanities and social sciences, so I'm getting to use my master's degree in history to a certain extent, as well!

How is the writing going for you?

Yes indeed! And about time, too. This novel has given me fits, but I *think* I've got it figured out. For now anyway.

When you least expect it...it'll come to you !
The thing is....being able to recognize when it happens.

On the other hand, I'm still trying to figure Raymond Chandler's
"The Big Sleep" which is one of my favorites from his work.

Chandler when asked about one of his characters in his novel,
replied, " damned if I know." ;)

Last month I finished a mystery novel I'd originally started in 2009, then shifted to another project (which I completed), and then came back to the 2009 story. Simplified the plot, too. It wound up at ca. 75K words.

Putting it aside now -- I have to do some research to shore up some scenes -- and for a change of pace am working on a fantasy story mixed with mystery. It may wind up at novelette length, not because I'm wordy, but because the background to the story is essential to the mystery, and the background, I think, will be fascinating, especially to fantasy/SF fans.

Well done! :eusa_clap Finishing a novel is definitely a time for celebration.

Hullo, AmateisGal. I just bought and started your book, Nebraska POW Camps. Really nice work.

I understand your opening note about chronology and such...as in "how do you tell the story with so many places to start and parallels and POVs, and heaps of general info and little nuggets of specific." I say you chose well! It works and is a good read with very interesting info.

I hope you are very successful.

Well behind the front lines!
I've done my fair share. I've written numerous magazine articles for various publications over the years. I was a staffer for a WW2 magazine out of the UK until it folded a few years ago.
A while back, I wrote a horror novel (which is funny because I'm no fan of the genre) about an Army unit going into the field in the US and horrible things happen to them. It's based on a unit and people I served with, so it was actually easy to write as I imagined what would these people do in such a situation. I really need to go back and flesh it out a little more and submit the thing, but all the 'heavy lifting' was done some time ago.
But to honest, I've probably done more consulting with others for their creations that I have for my own. The one I'm proudest of is helping re-craft the narrative for a DC comics series about WW2, called, "SGT Rock and the Lost Battalion" which turned out really good.

I would LOVE to be a staffer at a WW2 magazine! That sounds like a dream job!

I hope you can go back and revisit the novel and submit it!
