For as nice as yesterday was at the coast, today was off the charts. A very friendly Great Blue Heron was fishing in the creek by the condo. Usually all I get is a picture of their butts as they fly away. This guy did not care that I was there. And to prove that I did have a hat, my wife snapped a shot of me with the Cavanagh Thirty on the Newport docks. The sea lions were in residence, loud and boisterous.

Afield Today. I was in Duluth, MN, USA today to spend a day watching the annual "Hawk Migration" and take a hike.
Each year preditary birds migrate, following their prey (usually small song birds) down from Canada, catching currents over Lake Superior to the Minnesota River/Mississippi River and south. Preditory birds do not get up early, so at 9:30am we started seeing birds. Check the pic with the count by 11:00am. I left about 1:30pm and the count was even higher. It is a privledge to see the number of bird species relatively close. With the number of birds and professional Fish and Wildlife Rangers, Audobon reps and naturalists counting / identifying them - even I began to see and identify the birds. We got to see a Bard Owl and a couple more Perigrine Falcons after lunch - those were special.
Winter jacket and cap worked in the cool weather.
Cold day on the bluffs, 1500ft above the Lake Superior shore in Duluth. 45'F with a northerly wind. Glad I dressed warmly for standing still. A couple of birds that were netted were banded and released. Wow, up close they are elegant and powerful creatures.
When you look south/west you can just make out the Duluth Ariel Lift Bridge that lets the big boats (up to 1,000ft) into the harbor. Late afternoon lunch in Duluth by the Canal.
Late afternoon/evening I went for a hike in the Jay Cooke State Park. Changed into a fedora and a fleece for the hike. The St.Louis River was moving fast. The park re-opened a few days ago after five years being partially open. Five years ago in a flood of nearly 16+ inches of rain fell the roads, bridges and many structures were destroyed. Today was a very picturesque hike in the northern conifer forest.

Eric, I've been thru Jay Cooke a couple of times but never during the migration. I've been up to the Wolf preserve at Ely & stayed in the cabins at Burntside Lake several times. Magical place!

These beautiful shots of the Oregon coast and some of its residents conjured up memory of a legal case further up the coast, in the state of Washington some years ago.
Apparently someone dealing in large quantities of illegal weeds (yes, marijuana...) was caught and eventually successfully prosecuted. Following the trial there was some disagreement about what to do with the many bales of evidence remaining. It was finally decided that they would be burned out on an island in Puget Sound. The plan worked well, but all that smoke left no tern unstoned...

Thank you for these wonderful images Eric. The Willamette Valley is known as "Hawk Alley" on I-5 between Salem and Eugene. It is not unusual to see as many as 20 red tail hawks perched on fences near the freeway. The Oregon Dept. of Fish & Wildlife has provided tall perches for them to survey their hunting grounds. I envy your day.The hike continued near the moving river and thru the conifers and other trees.

Truly special places. I have resolved to make time to visit more magical places. Balancing work/private is always an issue.
Thanks sir. I am not a birder in that I do not keep lists or travel just to see birds. I am a birder in that I really enjoy witnessing themselves living in the magnificent places they call home. I did not include, but deer, moose and a black bear were also seen yesterday. I gave the moose and bear wiiiide berth at this time of the year.

Among other places I would love to have a cabin outside Ely in the Boundary Waters Wilderness Area for the summer months. I would love to volunteer time at the Wolf preserve.
Just remember,HJ,in the summer the mosquitos up there are large enough to carry off small people!
