Singer Bobby Darin stands beside a hand-made automobile called the "Bobby Darin Dream Car", unveiled on March 31, 1961 in Hollywood.

Freakin' Kevin Spacey's 2004 "Beyond the Sea" movie ruined Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee for me. It was so depressing and she was so mean to him that the cool, fun pre-pschodelic '60s youth vibe those two had is destroyed for me.

I know what you mean about Kevin Spacey! yuck! but not even him can spoil Bobby Darin for me.

Bobby and Sandra will remain forever icons of the late 50s very early 60s for me....particularly Bobby, and all his marvelous songs!:D

I'm no Bobby and Sandra expert - and I loved her movies growing up - but he seems like the nice one of the two / she seems to have been kinda mean to him and snarky in general. But who knows if that's true - it's just what I've read and how the movie presented them.

Talking about Sandra Dee...

and later on...with her Mercedes 190SL

Di Dia toured the car around the country, when Darin wasn't using it for public appearances. After publicity and film use, Darin donated his "Dream Car" to the St. Louis Museum of Transportation in 1970 where it remains.
Now that looks like it would have been a certainty for AMT or Revell to market as a model kit at that time! I don't think they ever did, or at least I never saw such a kit.

Her third automotive invention, the electric windshield wiper, was installed on a later car, a 1911 Chalmers 30.

I think I've heard about this. Didn't she get trounced because she filed a patent for the windshield wiper but it expired before they became standard issue on cars, or something like that?

No, as I recall she didn't choose to defend her patent, as she had plenty of money, and then when she lost everything in the Depression it was too late to claim. She never patented the turn signals or brake indicator, for she thought them to be obvious.

Note that turn signals were not standard equipment for nearly forty years after her invention
