The Kings Speech - a Critique

Watching it again a decade later, it's decidly mediocre and embarrassing.[SNIP] Bartender Edit: While TFL remains a broad church of opinion on the movie business, there is no need to resort to personal abuse.

Help with an approximate time-frame for this French 3pc suit

Looking at the photos, the only thing that bothers me is that crease right around where the top button is located. That represents the trouser line. The trousers fit fine, but the jacket is snug; perhaps shrinking half a size by some miracle is in order.

Help with an approximate time-frame for this French 3pc suit

Thanks so much! I do hope to sport it to an upcoming event, and get some pics wearing it. Just hasn't happened yet. "Waist pinch"--so that's what that's called. Interesting.

Help with an approximate time-frame for this French 3pc suit

This was a relatively recent purchase: a black Conchon-Quinette 3pc peak lapel suit. Seller listed it as 1920's/1930's. I asked an esteemed former member as to his opinion, and he said that it could very well be 1920's, but that such suits were worn for weddings, funerals, and the like for...

    Tuxedo with a fedora?

Thanks for all the replies! Apologies for the resurrection of a Bush-era thread. I'll know better next time. As to overcoats, I posted about this about five years ago, and was told a Chesterfield was optimal, but that plain black was fine. Since then, I have acquired a 1952 black db Chesterfield...

    Tuxedo with a fedora?

I would love to know when it became "set in stone" that a homburg is to be worn. Really does it matter if one isn't going to be outside all that much in a dinner suit/tuxedo, and the hat comes off once you enter a building (except perhaps a crowded bar)? I've seen enough late silent/early...

    Formal Wear Primer

You hit the nail on the head about most swing dancers, especially where I live. I can only hope that the situation differs in CA or NY or somewhere else. Very little appreciation for anything before the 1960's among male dancers, and those who try anything earlier fail miserably. Zoot suits...

    Formal Wear Primer

What to do about the 1910's-30's specific look of sporting a white waistcoat with a dinner jacket and there is that ever so slight strip of white from the waistcoat that shows either around the collar or is not covered by the dinner jacket? My dinner suit dates to December 1929, and I have four...

    VERY old collar restoration

This reply might be quite tardy, but I don't see boatloads of people having much to say about detachable collar laundering. I send mine to Barker's in the UK. Expensive and time-consuming, maybe, but they return looking brand spanking new. I agree about Sam Sing. They did launder and...

    Kirschbaum Clothes

Someone whose opinion I value greatly dated it to the late 1920's. I hope these pictures do it justice. Lapel width from the peak to where it would meet the shirt (more precise term?) is four inches.

    Kirschbaum Clothes

I couldn't think where to post this, but I recently purchased a 1920's tuxedo made by Kirschbaum Clothes of Philadelphia. Unfortunately, I am one of those people who is obsessed with dating clothing, and the tag with that information was absent from the pocket. I've done some research on...

    Overcoat for Black Tie?

Yet another question about black tie, this time with outerwear. For black tie, is it absolutely necessary that the overcoat have a chesterfield collar? Also, must the overcoat be black? I have, confusingly enough: --a black double-breasted overcoat from the 1930's or early 1940's with...

    Spats with black tie?

Thanks so much for the kind replies. I won't make that mistake, although I still wonder why I see photos of tuxedoes and spats from the '20's.

    Spats with black tie?

I've looked to see if anything has been posted about this, and can't find it. My question is whether or not it was acceptable at some point for men to wear spats with black tie. I'm thinking particularly of the 1920's/early 1930's. I've seen a few pictures of musicians(!) of the day wearing...

    Recently purchased black double-breasted overcoat

I was pleased to be able to find this fine overcoat. It fits like a glove, and is proof that if one waits long enough, I suppose one will find what he's looking for. That said, it's nothing special, not tailor-made, but I love the very look of the generous lapels, and it fits perfectly...
