Sgt Bartlett's career waould be interesting to research. If I have my uniform interpretation correct, it looks like according to his sleeve stripes he had at least 1 year in Vietnam, and at least 24 years of service. Yet, his one and only decoration is an Army Achievement Medal.

Wildcat, Best US Navy Fighter WWII

Aerial victories are aerial victories. I do not believe there is a list anywhere that tells which particular pilots were shot down by whom. Major Bong could have had his victories over tyros on mission #1, or over the most experienced pilots the Japanese had left. I don't think we'll ever...

WWI - The war in the air

Sir, I'm glad you found the links interesting. One other reference you might find of use is the 4 volume US Air Service in World War I, edited by Maurer. The historians at the US Air Force Historical Research Agency have placed these volumes online. The copies of volumes 3 and 4 are of...

Wildcat, Best US Navy Fighter WWII

I would tend to agree with the others that the pilots mattered just as well as the equipment that they flew. The US could not only harness its industrial capacity to build advanced aircraft in large numbers, they also could mobilize and train people to fly them to high standards. I don't have...

WWI - The war in the air

Sometime ago, I was in Little Rock on a lengthy business trip and had some time to tour museums there. One of these was the Jacksonville Museum of Military History (highly recommended if you are in the area), located about 20 miles north of downtown, near the Little Rock Air Base. They had a...

    My Mother's Secret Wartime Sweetheart.

That is a neat mystery. Could Private Haney be a cousin? Could he be someone she knew from school that was a couple years ahead of her, graduated and joined the Army?

Jimmy Flint: RAF pilot won two gongs on one WWII mission

It is interesting to note that because he was a sergeant pilot at the time, he received the DFM. Had he been commissioned and performed the same act, he would have been awarded the DFC (as indeed he was for another act following his commission in the RAF).
