Havershaw, those are indeed two very fine suits, you look sharp. Those wingtips are wonderful, I have two pairs of two tones. Both are B&W, brown & white I have been looking all over for, those looks great. I think what really sells your vintage look is the glasses, looking at your photos you looked as if you just stepped out of the 50's.

I agree with Bogie. You do look like you walked out of the 50?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s! That is a look that you really pull off well. You know that most men in the early 50?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s still wore suits from the 40?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s! Not every man could go right out and buy a new suit when the style changed. Lucky for men, suits really didn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t change too much from late 40?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s to early 50?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s.

For your consideration Havershaw, there are some swell glasses on ebay right now that would give you that late 30?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s or early 40?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s FDR look. These are my favorite looking glasses of the period! These are the same style Glenn Miller wore. I don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t need to ware glasses, but if I did I would ware these.

Jump on these! They are cheep and mint condition!

Cheers.

Union lable.

Havershaw, funny thing about those union labels are that they stitched them in any way they wanted. So some times the date is stitched over or under the fabric. Some times its so faded that its hard to read.
But, the look of the 1939 copy right tag looks different from the 1949 copy right. The 49 looks cleaner and crisper. The 39 is harder to read. Take a photo of it and post it and I could tell you if it's a 39 or 49 date.

Just thought I'd offer.

Cheers.

Thanks WildRoot! I think I'm going to bid on those glasses. never hurts to have a spare.

The elderly optician who excitedly worked putting my prescription into my frames said these were 1940s American optical frames. I asked him if he thought they might be 50s and he said they definitely 40s, as he recalled when they arrived in Pittsburgh in conjunction with a steel mill that opened at the time (the glasses were so sturdy and durable, he said, that the steel mill ordered them as safety glasses for all of their workers). (I bought the glasses at a thrift store in a small mill town in Pittsburgh, by the way.)

I don't think the frames are too 50s, but it will be nice to have an alternate pair as well. I just hope they're not too big on my face, but as you mentioned, they are a steal.

The only trouble is that my eyesight is so bad that it costs me $350 to have lenses put into my frames...

Havershaw, I had a feeling that those frames of yours were late 40?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s.

Say, one more thing about your swell suits; I would tell your dry cleaner to maintain those nice creases in the sleeves of your suits! Those are what gives it that 40?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s feel and look. I have plenty of suits with that sleeve crease but the dry cleaners think it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s a big long wrinkle. So, I have to tell them to press it back in or I have to put it back my self.

But, I think that a vintage suit looks more authentic with the sleeve creases!

Take care,

Root.

Well Canadave, the origin of creased sleeves is just something that was done in the 20?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s through the 50?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s. Back then, you know how sharp the creases in their slacks were, well, so were the sleeves! It added a sharper look and I have seen it in earlier films mostly from the late 20?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s through the 30?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s. Not so much in the late 40?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s though. I have a fine eye for detail and the little things that makes all the difference.

Any way, that?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s what I know about it.

Any other input on creased sleeves?

Root.
