Hi! I'm new and was wondering if I could get some hair help.

Hey, everyone here is so gorgeous! I've lurked a little while before I joined and you all seem super savvy when it comes to hair so I thought I would ask for some help. I've never really been good at doing my own hair because its so fine and just falls out no matter what I do. I was just wondering if there was a certain cut or style I could do that's simple and would stay in really fine hair. My hair is about down to my shoulders and I have bangs. Thanks!

Have you tried setting lotion and a wet pin curl set yet? I've got a lot of hair, but it's baby fine, and this is what works best for me. With a hefty dose of Lottabody and a pin curl set, I can hold a style for three days. Lately, I've been doing setting lotion while damp and blow drying, then spritzing with a heat protectant and curling with hot rollers. This method lasts all day for me.

I also have fine hair, and lots of it, and it is naturally curly also. Wet pin curl sets work very well for me. But I also like using a ceramic curling iron and then setting it by turning making the curls a standing pin curls and securing them with a clip to cool, then I place a silk scarf over them and hit them with a blast of cool air from my blow dryer. I finish my make up then style my hair.

More details, please!

Do you shampoo your hair every day? If so, go longer without doing it. Seriously, I found that no matter what my technique was, nothing would hold when I shampood every day. Now that I don't, it's made a world of difference on how my hair holds a particular style.

Also, how often do you practice curling your hair, no matter what technique you use? Sometimes the first try is a disaster (I can empathize!), but live and learn is a very handy motto to live by!

How long is your hair? How is it cut now? Do you have friends who try things out on you, too? All these factors are really really helpful in giving you precise advice that will help you get the results you want!

I wash my hair about every other day, the day I wash I can barely do anything at all and the second day is best, by the third day though, it just starts looking dirty. I set wet pin curls probably once a week now, I have gotten better over time but I know I still need some practice. I think it would help if my hair had any natural curl to it but it is super straight. Its past my shoulders by an inch or two and I have long leftover layers from a previous cut. Nobody I know does any type of vintage hair so I'm kinda on my own here.

Etoh- I think a vintage cut might help. There is a thread on the Middy Cut and a member, c-Dot, did a "cut it yourself" tutorial. The cut seems to help hold the curl.

When my fine hair was long, it would never hold a curl. Once I cut it into a middy, it holds really well- 3 days (it is really loose on the last day, but I have gone 4 days). I use a setting lotion and sponge rollers on soaking wet hair... it works really really well. I never thought my hair would hold a curl... but it really does! My hair is also pin straight naturally- nothing as much as a wave. I also only wash my hair once a week.

Thank you! I'll probably look into having it cut soon, I can't even cut my bangs on my own without looking like a kindergartner who found the scissors. Its definitely a help to hear from someone with such similar hair.

I am also new to pin curls, and that's what I had in mind! The curling iron. Does it hold as well as pin curls? Does anyone else have experience with this?

I have fine very straight hair. Lottabody and pin curls/sponge rollers overnight.
For first day, just shampooed hair, which is going to be styled modern with volume, or if you want to do a hot set or up do...my hairdresser suggested tapping a little styling powder over the dry hair (imagine you are tapping pepper over a plate!) then rub. It gives hair a little grip like day old hair but clean! I used to use the powder as suggested on the bottle, where you put it on your fingers and rub into the scalp but it always felt really claggy and heavy. The tap just a little and rub all through the hair method really helps mine.
I have also just started using Pantene Age Defy thickening treatment, it's a daily treatment which supposedly coats the hair to make it look like you have more hair. I have only been using it about a week but it does seem to have thickened a little and lost some of the slipperyness my hair used to have...worth a try (sorry about the product placement, I am not a Pantene rep!!!).

Curling out of the shower soaking wet hair does not work on everyones hair. I've learned for me once hair is washed and dryed damp hair curls the best. Some women use setting lotion, moouse, water and grooming spray to set hair using sponge rollers of bobby pins. No ones hair is alike. Plus the climate where you live will also effect your curls and the thickness of your hair is also a factor when attempting a vintage hairstyle. And lenght can also prevent the hair from holding a vintage hair style. The lenght of my hair is up to my shoulder blades.

For my hair ( thin course wavy) setting lotion does not work. I use Layrite Grooming Spray (smells man-ly but I adore it) http://www.layrite.com/layrite-grooming-spray-8-oz-bottle/ diluted with water is my holy grail setting lotion. Where I live gets very humid and not washing my hair everyday also helps (once every five or seven days) me aquire a vintage hair style. I learned one does not need a vintage style hair cut to do hair in vintage hairstyles. I never ever got a middy nor see any needed to aquire a middy hair cut for my hair but that is just me and this is what works for my hair. I am able to style my hair in 1940s-1960s hair styles with no issues. I just trained my hair to bend into any vintage hair style.

All in all keep at it. Learning to style your hair into any vintage hair takes HUGE amounts of patients. Once you have some go to vintage hair styles under your belt styling your hair will be easy.

On me it doesn't... a wet set has staying power but anything else (especially anything that doesn't involve water or steam) just falls right out. My hair likes the moisture. But I have stick straight hair that curls when it gets damp out, so your results might be different.
