Tom Cruise has worked my last nerve!

Hey all,

Just heard that Tom Cruise is now setting up to star in a film tentatively titled "The Few" in which he will play volunteer American pilot Billy Fiske who flew with the RAF in The Battle of Britain.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I have serious problems with this. Where do I begin? Well, first of all, Cruise is way too old to be playing a RAF pilot. He's pushing forty if not already and the average age of a RAF pilot in the Battle of Britain was around 22 or 23.

Secondly, while it was fun to see Steve McQueen give the Nazis hell in The Great Escape, I am starting to get tired of the whole Hollywood mentality that Americans are the only heroes and should be liberally inserted into every historical event as a pivotal personality. They did it in U-571, Pearl Harbor, Dances With Wolves, and Cruise's own The Last Samurai.

Thirdly, the actual Billy Fiske shot down ZERO German airplanes and died unceremoniously a month into the Battle of Britain. Out of the 7 Americans to choose from, Hollywood chooses the most unlikely and historically inaccurate one. What about the three Americans in 609 Squadron, who's personal stories and combat records in the Battle actually read like a movie! Or Art Donahue, the most amazing American RAF volunteer of the war!

Finally, I tire of seeing star power diminish the importance of historical events. If this Cruise vehicle hits screens, millions of ignorant American youth will be given a major misconception about this legendary event. That is why Band of Brothers was so good, because it left star power on the floor in favor of an ensemble cast that depicted the teamwork involved in war and the relationships that war creates.

Irked,
Mike

Tom Cruise is OK by me

Well, he was good in TOP GUN, and it boosted morale and enlistments. I will wait to see the film and then decide. It's entertainment, afterall.

I don't, personally, go into the theater expecting a History lecture--My professors make sure I get my fill of those!

I think if it's a good story, with decent action, and reasonable flying sequences, it'll be just fine as a MOVIE.

As for it influencing a bunch of young minds--maybe, for a time. But they will learn the true stories eventually. People who actually give a damn about the events are only influenced by movies like this for so long--I would imagine that this film might even stir up some interest in the battle, bringing more of the facts to more people.

I remember being a kid and thinking that Dinosaurs can talk--all because I saw it on The Land Before Time. Now, however, I know better--Only SOME dinosaurs can talk (The sequels set me straight!) :D

Joking of course--my point is, I highly doubt the influence of this kind of film will be society changing.

I understand where you're coming from, MDFrench, but you're tilting at windmills. Fact is, the U.S. film industry rules movies (so Americans get to be the heroes) and stars rule the American film industry (so stars get to pick the movies, not the other way around). All of that can be a good thing when it works, eg. Saving Private Ryan.

Anyway, without someone with Cruise's star power and influence, a movie like "The Few" probably doesn't even get made. And who knows? It may be fun to watch. And, as AndyKev says, "It's only entertainment."

Tom Cruise worked my last nerve 15 years ago. LOL

Now, why is Mel Gibson playing American heros (The Patriot. We Were Soldiers...)?
