Nimitz's Gray Book made public.

The Naval War College just unveiled a new online publication - the 4,000-page "Gray Book" collection of Fleet Adm. Chester Nimitz communications that started in the wake of the Pearl Harbor attack and ran right up until the closing days of the war.

This was the most controversial message sent by Nimitz to Halsey when he was in command of Task Force 34 chasing a decoy fleet. Taffy 3 was under attack by the Yamoto and other battleships and cruisers and needed immediate help. As it was, Halsey never got the big gun duel because of this. The last fraise was padding that was suppose to be discarded from the message, but was left in an shown to Halsey. He was furious, through his hat on the deck, and sulked for an hour, before finally ordering the fleet to reverse course. They arrived to late to help Taffy 3. Luckily, Taffy 3s aircraft and destroyers put up such a good fight it spooked Vice Admiral Takeo Kurita so violently, he called of the attack.

I saw the video the NWC posted on the introductory ceremonies, and I certainly look forward to finding the time to read through some of those pages.
