Schlitz making a comeback............

Schlitz is all my father drank (Chicago in the 50's), so I grew up on it. Later it started to taste like acetone and I switched to Strohs and Black Label. It made a brief come-back about 12-15 years ago, then disappeared again. The original Milwaukee brewery has given way to "constructive reuse", though the bar was still there last time I visited. I'll give it a try for the old days, but my gut's not what it was before - bigger does not mean better.

Interesting that our tastes in beer followed the same pattern. I started drinking Strohs when I went off to college in 1974. In those days you couldn't buy that brand in North Carolina because our beer couldn't be more than 3.2 % EOH. But the road from Chapel Hill to the Virginia state line was short, and stores in Virginia sold Strohs. My friends and I would make a beer run a couple times a month. In the between times we'd drink whatever Fowlers or the Piggly Wiggly had on sale. Good times!

Renegade Beers in Fridge.

Just went to check supply in spare fridge. Look what I found!

It was wifey's fav when we met. This is the new batch stuff I bought specifically for her one evening. She's been hoarding the last two as its since disappeared again

I think Schlitz was more often than not a victim of its name regardless of its taste. I think its great that it's making a comeback, all these old time beers from regional breweries with their strong ethnic connections are what America came of age on during the twentieth century.

We must be close to the same age, I started college in 75 and Sterling was my beer of choice because it was a $1.69 a six pac. Strohs, Little kings, and Colt 45 were also in the running as they were dirt cheap and I never had any money. Just as Schlitz is making a comeback I was surprised several years ago when we were in Savannah Ga. and went to a local bar and what did I see, all the college kids drinking PBR. I didn't even know that they were still making it. Asked the kids why they were drinking it and some things never change, they said it was a $1 a can.

$1?! I wouldn't give them 5 cents a can for that dreck. :doh:

Oh I did! May be suprised that I actually brought beer (not deer) home from last weeks expedition to deer camp. ( we drink more whiskey in camp of an evening).
Supplies are up again!!!!

I agree but that only means that I am getting old. In my early 20's I would drink anything cheap.

Quick aside... I worked in Raleigh 74-76 and great sport was going to the legislature building when they were debating liqueur by the glass. All those portly guys with white patten leather belts and shoes with red double-knit pants. (I was at UNC-CH, lived in Carrsboro).

Ditto. Schlitz, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Bud were military issue brews and in college I switched to Miller; now favor Thai brews.

Best beer I ever had was a tropic temp Bud handed to me out of the back of a deuce and a half! And I absolutely hate Budweiser!
