Hi -

I recently joined the Lounge and wanted to say "Hi".

I also recently scanned an old family album. It has photos from the 1940's, lots of family and friends. A few war time shots of an uncle who was in the Air Corps.

Album

Hopefully people will enjoy the pictures and the styles. If any interest anyone I can come up with a higher resolution scan.

Thanks

Jay

Just saw this post. I don't suppose the original poster is still on the FL. I noticed that his uncle was in the Air Corps, and was at Alliance, NE with the Troop Carrier group. So was my Dad. I wonder if their paths ever crossed?

I thought I'd use this thread to ask a question. Hopefully, someone will have an answer. If not, at least maybe we can start a discussion on old family photo albums. Anyone have any to show?

No to my question. This is the old family photo album that has always been at the house. My grandparents have had it since they were married in 1904. Only the most treasured photos were in this old album. It is in excellent shape, except that the cover has over the past couple years become extremely fragile. The cover is "crinkled" (for lack of a better word), and, if touched with anything but extreme care, would flake off.

Does anyone 1) know how to give a date to the age of this book (could it be older that the 1904 era?), and, 2) does anyone have any recommendations as to how to preserve and/or stabilize the cover?

My Dad was with the 9th Air Force, 81st Squadron, 436th Group Troop Carrier Command. He was in the first group to sale to England, aboard the Queen Mary.

I don't know if my Dad was on the first group to cross, but he did cross on the Queen Mary. He was in the 442 TCG. I remember him talking about the crossing, and saying there were about 20,000 GI's on the ship. He said that they rotated being able to sleep in a bed every three days. One day you had a bed, the other two you found the best spot you could anywhere you could.

Who knows, my Dad and yours could have crossed together. Small world, isn't it?

He sailed over either December 43 or January 44. He said there were so many sea sick men it was pitiful. The Captain announced over the loud speaker that the Germans claimed they had sunk the Queen Mary mid ocean, every one laughed!

That was the same time my Dad crossed. He had some interesting stories about his time on the Queen Mary. I wonder if they met during that time?

Unfortunately, probably not. The Queen carried on average as many as 15,000 men. In peace time she carried 1,957 passengers. Almost eight times more!

Who knows? After all, the paths of two of their descendants have "crossed" after 70 years.

One great thing that happened in my life was, in 1971. The Queen Mary opened for tourist in Long Beach, and the family went there on vacation. It was something to be on the same ship as my Dad 27 years later. Not many kids of WWII vets can say that, since most of the fleet had been scrapped by then.
