Fino fino w/grommets photos

as per request, this is how i got my costly panama to be comfortable on hot days.

I have no idea what size these photos will be when I post them. The one I posted earlier in this thread was pretty small. Where on this site can I get some guidance on that? The pictures are posted using links to a google/picasa web album.

I feel that it's the leather sweat band that makes it uncomfortable for me and makes my hair stick to my head.
But I'd rather that than suffer heat stroke or cancer.

I usually wear a Panama in hot countries such as Spain and Italy, and England to on our rare HOT days. Should I go without, I have had sunstroke and a burnt scalp, neither is funny.
I can't honestly that my hats keep me cooler, but I can say that they help protect my head, ears & neck from sunburn. For me, that's enough to justify wearing them in warm weather.

Amusing to see this thread pop up again as we slide into the colder months here in London. I'm very glad of the colder weather, though. Given the option, I'd choose extra Winter over Summer every time. A couple of hot (22 Celsius, give or take) weeks to wear linen is fine, but I end up grouchy, irritable, and depressed when it stays much hotter than that for months on end. I've gotten very used to the milder Winters living this far south, but I still struggle with the opporessive Summer weather.

In the nearly ten years since I started shaving my head, I can count the number of occasions on which I left the house with no hat on my fingers. Without exeception, they were when I was on the way to costumed events, usualyl with either a wig on, or at least a full head of make-up / prosthetics. When the weather gets too unbearably hot for felt (usually some time after Easter), I switch over to linen and cotton caps, and straw hats. I'd feel naked going out without one or the other. If it's "too hot for hat", I'd rather stay indoors. In any case, I do try where possible to stay inside much between Easter and September.

I don't know about "cooler", but I sure know that my favorite straw hat certainly keeps the sweat and the sun off my face.

Wearing a hat on a hot sunny day will make you feel cooler if:
1.The hat is light in weight and color (the lighter the better, white ideally), so that it reflects most of the light and heat.
2.The hat lets air through easily (and is preferably vented).
3.The hat has a high crown with the top of the hat well above the top of your head so that the hot air isn't trapped next to your head.

It will also, of course, make you look remarkably cool, which has the psychological effect of making you feel frostier, as well.

I don't know about "cooler", but I sure know that my favorite straw hat certainly keeps the sweat and the sun off my face.

Exactly. Hats aren't designed to keep you cooler, they're designed to keep the sun and rain off of your head. The former may have the effect of making you feel cooler, and certainly keeps you from feeling the effects of direct sunlight.

Summerhat comparsion :

Lightfelthats - like Borsalino Piuma 50 Gramms !! http://www.hutshopping.de/50_Gramm_Fedora_Herrenhut_by_Borsalino.html or something other.
The Problem with Felt in Hotweather is the Sweat, felt is not washable !! So you will have Sweatstains over Time, ok some People like the used, Italowestern look. Wool does not smell, a light Felt hat is thin so when it Rains, it soaked quickly and thats not so good for Felt. And is not recommended in Tropicareas because woolpests.

Cottonhat - the Cotton suck the Sweat all in like a Sponge , so when you sweat alot the Hat comes wet, but is washable. Not recommended in Tropicareas it soaks the humidity and is always wet.

Linenhat - these is a very good Choice for Summer, since ever, because the Linen evaporate the moisture quickly, so it feels not wet and its also washable, Linen is not so shear resistance, is Tropicresistant.

http://www.rmr-hats.com/5/Tesi-Hats.html

Hemphat - Tilley - is very soft, crushable, also with a good Rainresistance or Hempfedoras - Borsalino, Akubra or so, are a bit more delicate to handle, stiffer, but also a good choice. The Hemp is Linenlike but more strong. Hemp is the strongest Fibre and of course the Hat can not be smoked, Tropicresistant

Crushable Linen, Cotton , Hemphats can be dunk in cool Water then wring out, thats cools the Head in very Hot Weather very well.

Strawhats- are delicate to handle, the Fibres can breake, needs high huminidty or the Strawhats must be sprayed with Water sometimes in Year, otherwise the Fibres become brittle, is a bit rough. Always take it on the edges not on the Crown otherwise the Straw can break.

Panamahats- better to handle then Strawhats, are finer, can be very expensiv , can be rolled but not when the humidity is low, bad for Rainydays. Weavings are Brisa, Cuenca, Torcido, Crochet, Fancy or New Order.

Sisal- very sensitve to moisture, see a Sisalcarpet , stronger then Straw.

Raffia- should not break like Straw, more durable. The handle is Strawlike.

Shantung Straw ( Paper)- see http://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/shantung-straw-hats.54331/ chin. Toyo Straw , cheaper is Bangaro Straw, Shantung is stiff.

these Fiberhats cannot be washed.

Synthetic Fibres- Nylon / Supplex very light, washable, strong, but can stink quickly, to remove Odor you need a special Detergent .

And of course to all these Hats, the weaving is important -- Crownventing, Grommets or not, Thigthness, Brimsize and Style. So my choices are Linen and Hemp.

My own two tropical cents: I don't wear a traditional Panama because a. they're not my style: b. all the tourists wear them and it's a good way to get mugged: c. white gets dirty easily; d. it rains here all the time. So, for everyday wear I have a Sunbody which is very useful and a black Peters Bros. hemp Strat-style hat (beautiful hat and very light). Saving the best for last, I have my VS Milan in a fedora style with a 2 7/8" brim. It's also very light, and that Milan straw is incredibly beautiful in direct sunlight: a brownish-gold color. Coming up will be an Akubra Balmoral if I can get one sized and another Peters hemp. Oh, and another Sunbody, probably the Gambler. My wife asked me recently, "How many hats do you need?" I replied,' I told you before we married I was schizoid: well, I need one for each personality. More to love and you never get bored!"

Summerhat comparsion : Update

Lightfelthats - like Borsalino Piuma 50 Gramms !! http://www.hutshopping.de/50_Gramm_Fedora_Herrenhut_by_Borsalino.html or something other. Another possibility is Perforated Felt http://shop.borsalino.com/en/mans-c.../other-collections-promo/felts-hats/felt-hats an advantage of Felt it is lightweight.

Cottoncalico- is a special unbleached and often not fully processed cotton.

Linenhat - these is a very good Choice for Summer, since ever, because the Linen evaporate the moisture quickly, so it feels not wet and its also washable, Linen is not so shear resistance, is Tropicresistant and is susceptible to wrinkling.

http://www.rmr-hats.com/5/Tesi-Hats.html

Hemphat - Tilley - is very soft, crushable, also with a good Rainresistance or Hempfedoras - Borsalino, Akubra or so, are a bit more delicate to handle, stiffer, but also a good choice. The Hemp is Linenlike but more strong. Hemp is the strongest Fibre and of course the Hat can not be smoked, Tropicresistant but is susceptible to wrinkling. Is UV, Mold and Saltwater resistant ! So you live at the coast, thats the choice.

A new Product from Bailey called Litestraw is rollable, waterresistant, probably it is treated with something to get this feature.
Parabuntal Straw buri palm leaves https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyandrococos- from China , Philippines , very light

Paperbraids are made from different Paperstrands (Silkpaper) etc. depending on processing they are crushable and waterresistant.

For Hats i think is treated with something to improve the properities.
Parasisal is the same as normal Sisal but 2x2 Woven.

Raffia- should not break like Straw, more durable. The handle is strawlike, better crushable.

Shantung Straw ( Paper)- see http://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/shantung-straw-hats.54331/ chin. Toyo Straw , cheaper is Bangaro Straw, Shantung is a bit stiff but is crushable.

Seagrass (Xian)- is crushable and waterresistent, a bit rough looking.

Ramie - not so durable than other fibers mostly mixed with other fibres, wrinkle resistant, stiff and brittle

Jute- is soft to touch and light

these Fiberhats cannot be washed.

Synthetic Fibres- Nylon / Supplex, Polyester very light, washable, strong, but can stink quickly, to remove Odor you need a special Detergent . For some Outdooractivties and for Smokers not so recommended, because these Fibres are not Fireproof , they can melt rapidly.

And of course to all these Hats, the weaving is important -- Crownventing, Grommets or not, Thigthness, Brimsize and Style. So my choices are Linen and Hemp.

Another Straw is Bakustraw
What is Baku Straw? i found confusing definitions :
Baku Straw is a very fine straw with a 1x1 weave and has a dull finish made from the young stalks of the Talipot palm from Malabar and Ceylon. When made into a hat, it is very lightweight.
https://books.google.ch/books?id=zN...Q6AEIQTAF#v=onepage&q=baku straw buri&f=false

Very fine natural straw fiber from rice stalks; expensive handwoven straw for use in millinery and dress hats.
Or is it a sort of Wheatstraw like Milanstraw ?
So was is it ? maybe someone knows .

I say a fedora makes you LOOK cool...so...

And one could do what the cowboys do in the movies... dunk your whole hat in the river or trough and put it back on yer noggin...
Newman does it in BC & SK... of course he had several prop hat changes in the flick...

For my money a good hat will keep you cooler. Those who say they don't remind me of some who say there is really no such thing as a curve ball in baseball. Apparently, they have never tried hitting one!
