The former Dairy Queen and what was a funky antique store here in Springfield, MO were demolished today. I remember going to the Dairy Queen as a kid and my sister-in-law used to work there. With the loss of the antique store there is now only one former residential house left on the six-mile pre-1970 section of this street. Sigh ...

Went back and thoroughly checked out Fountain Square in Indy this week. The place is a virtual time capsule, with plenty of vintage neon, diners and soda fountains, cocktail lounge, 24 hour grill, a classic barber shop, a tattoo shop, a performance hall with weekly swing dancing, and a fully restored 1930s duckpin bowing alley on the 4th floor, plus a '50s era bowing alley in the basement.

Matt,
I'm loving your "discovering Indy" posts. I lived there till about '95 and watched the downtown grow from a sleepy city (NapTown) to a vibrant place with lots of nightlife. Fountain Square was just on the cusp of its revival when I left for the countryside. Keep it coming.
Also, I need to get to that barber shop. It is not easy to find a place that still does shaves.

This is the Daily News Building on 42nd Street in NYC - we were walking by the other day and my girlfriend said "your buddies at Fedora would really like this building," so I took these shots. I love the building as in any other city it would be a star, but because it is right down the Street from the Chrysler Building and not far from the Empire State Building it kind of gets ignored.

And to be fair, those are more striking and imposing buildings with, overall, more interesting back stories and architecture, but the News Building is no slouch and is quite an impressive example of Art Deco at Art Deco's zenith in the city. The one thing I couldn't get a shot of is the lobby which is absolutely incredible - so I posted a shot I got from Wikipedia just so that you could enjoy it.

Some might recognize the News Building as having played the role of the Daily Planet Building in the Superman movies.

That frieze with the "he made so many of them" was an answer to those who derided the News as a shabby "common" newspaper -- which many did in the Era. The full quote is "God must love the common people because He made so many of them."
