Maybe it's all what your experience as a kid was. My parents were older, my dad was 40 when I was born and his mom had been in her early 30s when he was born (similar on my mom's side with her dad - I only had two living grandparents as a kid), so, growing up, my grandparents were in their seventies and seemed very old - both had pretty major health issues. So, away from the cultural stereotype at the time, my experience was grandparents were old and, unfortunately, not healthy. I'm 51 now and several of my contemporaries are grandparents. A very good friend of mine is in (I'm guessing) her late forties and she just became a grandmother - she is an incredibly energetic, active person - so it is jarring for me to think of her in any context similar to my grandparents growing up.

I'm in pretty much the same position as you FF. I grew up only knowing 2 grandparents and they both died by the time I was in my mid 20s. I was 31 when my dad died, now 44 and wondering how much longer I can put off being an orphan! Hold on mum, don't go just yet!

My disturbing realisation is that my son is in his mid 20s. How on earth did I get so old!

Ha, if you think that's bad..... the final episode of Friends first aired in 2004.... over a decade ago!

I know "Friends". It wasn't really popular in Germany.

To me, it's the prototype of todays senseless slapstick-comedy-series.

Being 51 happens to us all, you'll come to terms with it................eventually.
Compliments to your parents for having you in their mid thirties, and compliments to your grandparents having their children in their late twenties.

I have an Annual Pass for Disneyland and go there quite often. On a recent visit I went on the It's A Small World ride and realized that the kids performing this song are now in their early 60s!

I first visited Disneyland (the original, in Anaheim) on my 9th birthday, in 1956. That was just under one year after it had opened. It celebrated its 60th birthday last July. That's dismaying.

I am older then both Field Marshal Erwin Rommel and Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, were in 1944! Wish I could say, I have accomplished half of what either of them did, but, I can't!

I remember turning thirty, and being slightly fixated on the fact that by that age Bob Dylan had changed the world - twice.

I'm 51 and my father was born in '24, his Dad was born in 1884 (we think) and,while I only had two grandparents alive in my lifetime, I also had two great-grandparents alive in my lifetime who were born - best estimate of the family - mid 1860s to early 1870s. My dad was about 20 years older than my friends' dads and my grandparents and great grandparents were equally much older. While I grew up in the late '60s / '70s, my family vibe was more like a kid might have felt growing up in the '40s (I think). I remember my great-grandfather well and even as a young boy I could tell he was a man from another time from mannerisms, to thought process, to beliefs. I love that I am here in 2015 and I had a connection as a kid to someone born +/- 1867, kinda crazy.
