Borsalino Homburg in grey. CASTORO (Beaver). This was owned by a titled gentleman of Turin.
Probably the best quality hat I have handled. Thought I would keep the moths out by storing it in this case from Trieste and to keep it all Italian.
Chris.

Quick(Maybe) question. On holiday in Sicily I stopped of at a high end mens store as I wanted a nice Panama, if that is the correct term. I looked at hats by Borsalino but settled on one with a fedora style with a Doria label. Searching the web, whenever I put in Doria it took me to Borsalino sights so I just wondered what the connection between the two was, if any.The hat is very nice, I just have not had time to photograph it at present. I am waiting to get a nice linen suit for next years holiday.

Gentlemen,

I was wondering if any of you happened to have heard of or seen another Borsalino "Mont". Pics below. Just curious about it. The ribbon is mine as it came witihout one, but I know it was this size because the unfaded fur was obvious.

Altiori - As always, pictures help. My guess is a 1995 vintage. Pics of the liner and production tag is always helpful.

Danielle - Che belle gruppo di Borsalini.

Am so sorry for my belated reply; appreciate the info.

Have uploaded the hat photo and welcome any additional specifics...

Best regards,
Joe

I placed an order for my first Alessandria, and it arrived yesterday. Unfortunately, it was disappointing.

My order was for the "Brown" model, but it arrived as a dark, dark chocolate color — it actually looks black in most lighting. When I called for an explanation, the retailer explained that the Alessandria has only been sold in one color of brown for the past 10 years, even though their website gives the option to purchase the model in THREE DIFFERENT BROWNS!

My question: can anyone confirm that the modern Alessandria is only available in this chocolate color? I was aiming for Johnny Depp's mid-brown Alessandria (yes, I understand his is vintage, but is it possible to get close with a modern Alessandria?).

Thanks all,

- m

Paging Besdor......

Try Taupe for a closer match for Depp's hat, AFAIK, the chocolate brown has been pretty consistent in their lineup.

Thanks, Jared.

It was suggested on another thread that an Akubra Campdraft would get closer than a modern Alessandria. Can anyone vouch for that, at least until I find a vintage Borsa that fits the bill?

The Campdraft is a very similar hat to the Alessandria, and Akubra's quality is generally better than that of a modern Borso.

There's also the Stetson Premiere stratoliner.

About Akubra better quality than Borsalino in these days I have huge doubts....

At the end I really think there is no story either or maybe the world of hats producers is changed and I never noticed ;)

Here is my recently acquired Vintage 1942 Stetson Stratoliner in Slate Gray... Extra Light Felt Fur.
it was 7 1/8 and I bumped it out to 7 3/16 almost 7 1/4 and near perfect fit using a Fat Charly's Hat Jack ...fit it into hat at just below top of Sweat Band, snug it up fairly tight, apply Steam around the outside of Sweat Band area for 360 degrees, let set for 1 hour, remove Hat Jack and try on....Repeat if not a good fit.
I would not try for more than 1/8 in size for fear of damaging, ripping the Sweat Band & leaving a ridge on outside of Crown Felt...

I have a CD in Taupe Fawn (fantastic lid, but not the mid-brown color I desperately seek), and a Borsalino Como in mid-brown. Both are GREAT lids. Problem is, I prefer wide brim hats, so the Como doesn't see much action. I will say that the Akubra is classy yet bulletproof, while the Como just screams formal wear to me. I'm hoping an Alessandria will be the best of both worlds.

I am now the proud owner of the bluegrass Borsa listed above in Bond's (Scott) posting. It is a great hat in an unusual colour. Scott did a great job on the sweat and put on a perfect ribbon.

I am a long way away from "expert" status but I do own 4 Borsas of various vintage, from 40's to the mid 90's and also own 5 Akubras. My favorites are the Borsa as I like the soft felts however I have two Akubras, a Sydney and a Madison (20 yrs old) and the felt on those hats for the money I paid is superb. While it may be folly to compare one to the other, for the money I think Akubra hats represent best value for money on the market right now. I get more compliments on my Akubras than I do my Borsas.
