Appropriate Memorial Dress

I will be going to a memorial for a fine fellow next week and am curious about what would be appropriate dress. One would think, oh yes, black suit, white shirt, black tie, etc. would be proper. But it's a celebration of this fine fellow's life so why dress down? Black suit, white shirt, rich red tie or maybe Navy suit, white shirt with rich blue or yellow tie. Or even a RAF tie.

Any recommendations?

Thanks.

I agree that it should be elegant/formal but not too sombre. Navy suit, white shirt and colorful, but conservative tie is a good choice.
