Luni Pignatar is the ward feast of St. Stephen where he is fabled to have been discovered more than a century ago a golden pot that had rich forever its owner

The host "Il Duca della Pignata" is the man with coat and blue top hat

Here's the king of the Veronese Carnival "Papà del Gnocco" in its magnificence as guest star

The afternoon is enlivened by the distribution of vegetable soup, wine and sweets

There is few people in San Stefano today and this make me a little sad

Thanks for appreciations and hope this is another sketch of our Carnival tradition

So beautiful... I especially like Papà del Gnocco!! The festival looks like a lot of people attended, Daniele. You think there could be more?!

Charlie, there is something in the Veronese Carnival, so old and participated, that make me thinking about the contemporary way of life.
Everything seems so far from the real participation.
Today afternoon the most active were the poor and homeless
This is a characteristic of the Carnival, but not the only one I hope
For the future who knows:rolleyes:

RJR thanks. these places are not more far then a quarter of mile from my office and I have time.....:)

Daniele, I wonder if Visconti wasn't influenced by de Chirico's paintings. Beautiful, graceful, dreamlike buildings. Thank you for the photos: I'll be dreaming of Italy all today.

Good question RobertoTropicale.
I have two replies:
a) De Chirico has a fantastic, for real, exibithion actually in Ferrara until 28 February along with Carlo Carrà and some European artists of the same time. If you like him (I do) take a fly and come to visit. It will worth. I can give you some suggestions.
2) The Italian squares of any town or city have all, more or less, a metaphysical sense which is given, in my opinion, by the historically layered architecture that makes it timeless. There was also the new architecture, above all the Razionalismo during the 20' and 30' that implemented this kind of no time sensation.
For a film made in a wonderful place, remembering De Chirico, I suggest "L'amico di famiglia" di Paolo Sorrentino
Instead to dream come to visit.......

Thanks very much, Daniele. I'd give anything to get on a plane tonight and go, but I'm in the middle of a semester (I teach Literature) and can't get away until the end of April. On the bright side, though, I get four months off for the spring and summer and have been considering taking my wife to Aix-en-Provence, where we have friends, for our 35th wedding anniversary. What a fantastic trip it would be to travel from there to the north of Italy in the springtime. Your description of the Italian squares may just force me to do it, as I'm afraid I'm a born daydreamer. I'll keep you posted on our plans, and thanks again.

More fedoras abar.

I really wanted to get out and get some good Alaska photos. But I'm on the flight line doing testing at 0430 and working most of the daylight hours. It gets light here around 1000 and gets dark about 1700. I haven't had time to do much a s there is little free time. I get to go to some pretty cool places. And yes, it's fun - but it can be a little taxing at times. I mostly see the flight line and the inside of bars and taverns, which is my go-to source of food, nourishment, and a little conversation.

Humpy's in Anchorage,

Some ice sculptures on one of the public squares (slightly melted)

I think that's a squirrel...

Some old signage

And what's turned out to be my chosen "Neighborhood Bar," The F Street Station.

I'd post some photos from the flight line of C-17s and F-22s; however, as it is restricted access, I don't think I should. They don't show anything important, but I don't want to chance it.

Just catching up on this thread a little....some astounding sights!!

Fantastic carnival photos, Daniele! Living in proximity to the big easy that I do, I'm very familiar with our take on Mardis Gras, but it's always so great to see many of its origins from around the world. And for anyone who plans to use the coming weeks for any spiritual reflection...may you end up a little more at peace with the world than when you started.

Bob!!!! I love the green visored straw!! I will always hold a hat like that in as high esteem as the finest Stetson or Borsalino, because my grandfather always wore one, whether he was working the field or just tinkering around the house. I have one myself that's my cutting grass/drinking beer in the yard hat. They remind me of Granddaddy, and will always hold a special place in my heart

A few months later I was in Lecce - Apulia at the NCOs School:(

In those years the military draft was, in Italy, mandatory

I studied five months military techniques to become an expert in explosives and mines and lead a team of explorers.
At the same time I also studied the Academic subjects giving, in military uniform, two exams.
The black basque and the orange insignia means I was in cavalry
