This one isn't signed by the author but it is signed by two members of the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion. This was the Canadian volunteer group that went over to Spain during the Spanish Civil War to fight on the Republican side against Franco.

And finally (typing fast before while my internet works!), I may not be a hockey fan anymore but I certainly was when I was growing up in the 60s. They call Gretsky 'the great one'...I don't think he holds a candle to Gordie Howe.

Gordie will always be Mr. Hockey, but come on, Gretzky was pretty damned good and equally the gentleman!

Sorry Mr C...Gretzky was too late for me. I lost interest in hockey after the first expansion. When I think of hockey, I still think in terms of the original 6...back when the Leafs actually won something once in a while! Makes me quite the dinosaur, I know, but there it is.

Generational favourites are fine. You watch who's hot while they're hot and you're watching, no problem!

BUUUUUUUT - that's not what you posted!

Comparing apples to apples, Gretzky scored more goals, had more assists, more 50 goal plus and 100 point plus seasons, and did so in a shorter playing career. While being a gentleman on and off the ice (and while there is a Gordie Howe hat trick - one goal, one assist and one fight - there is no violent equivalent for Gretzky).

Anywho....

I found a signed copy of Alice Roosevelt Longworth's memoirs "Crowded Hours" in an antique shop buried in a pile for $3. I've always been an admirer, and was thrilled to get it.

My signed books are primarily astronauts, and a fighter pilot or two with a football player mixed in, as I worked for about 9 years at Space Camp. Every astronaut that wrote a book that published in the 90s came thru signing books. As a result I came away with Alan Shepard, Buzz Aldrin, Gene Krantz (Flight Director, not an astronaut), Charlie Duke, Jim Lovell + Greg 'Pappy' Boyington, Ken 'The Snake' Stabler and there are others...

I have a friend whom is the one that always comes across signed books at used bookstores, then again he lives in a larger city with better used bookstores.

Exciting signed books there, M. I've got a couple signed by Roberta Bondar but that's it for astronauts for me!

This week I came across two interesting signed books: Luciano Pavarotti's My World and Tom Wolfe's I Am Charlotte Simmons. Love those thrift stores! Haven't got the patience right now to post photos. Photobucket loads unbelievably slow for me.

I have a signed biography by Yogi Berra from the 80s; signed for my grandfather.
I also have a signed edition from Allen Ginsberg.
For me, the ever elusive would be a signed Hemingway to go with my collection of his works in 1st Ed. It would take masterful luck to find that one.

Look out bellow the confessions of a parachuting padre by Fr. Francis Sampson
The fool Lt. by Robert Eldon
Return of the Enola Gay by Tibbits

There have to be a few more but the book shelves were rearranged by Mrs. Newsman and now...i need a card catalog to find anything.

Those are some terrific signed books, Newsman! To have a book that has been handled by the actual author or subject is very special indeed.

Somewhere out there is a copy of a text book I co-wrote, with my signature on it. The student who asked for it said "when you're all dead, I'll sell it on ebay for a fortune!"

Kudos on the neat finds. However, I did find "I Am Charlotte Simmons" a bit off even for Wolfe - felt forced, as if his usually feel for all sorts of social nuance wasn't as sharp as usual.

Haven't read it yet...my queue is pretty long right now! It was really the Pavarotti autobiography that got me excited, I have to admit.

They're all interesting newsman! It's the histories and the biographies that I find most interesting myself, although the most common finds are fiction/literature. Some of my favourites:

Autobiographies or political works by 7 different Canadian Prime Ministers;
Shake Hands with the Devil, by General Romeo Dallaire
Crazy Town, by Robin Doolittle (about Toronto's recent, former crazy mayor)
A Mouse in My Pocket, by Hedley Everdard (Canadian fighter pilot in WW2)
Long Time Gone, by David Crosby
The Cruiser Uganda, by Stephen Geneja (RCN cruiser in WW2)
The Goal of My Life, by Paul Henderson (scored the winning goal in the 1972 Canada-Russia hockey series. Few Canadians of my age will forget that goal.)
My Father's Son, by Farley Mowat (memoir of WW2 service)
Out of the Clouds, signed but not authored by Col. Fraser Eadie, officer commanding the 1st Cdn Parachute Battalion in WW2. The book is a history of the unit.

and on and on....!

Oh...and cookbooks signed by the author/chef. Great stuff.
