Hi,

I am new to the forum i have been looking to get a Leather jacket and i really like the look of the sheene like the ones seen here http://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/aero-sheene-in-seal-vicenza.79444/ and here http://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/my-new-aero-sheene.77235/

Id prefer the august collar as i believe it would look better as i am 5ft8 and a fairly slim build, I am unsure over the type of leather though fqhh or vicenza what are the main differences and how does the vicenza handle the rain? i am in the UK so how would i go about ordering a sheene in the uk is it a thurston bros only jacket?

Any information on the types of leather and ordering would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Luke

I'm sure if you asked Aero, they would make one for you. I would be tempted to go for the vicenza with the Sheene - it's a lighter leather and suits that design. The FQHH is a thick, heavy skin that takes a bit of breaking in. If you're looking for a happy medium tumbled FQHH is a bit lighter and comes well-broken in. Weather wise, I wouldn't worry about the rain with vicenza, in my experience, it's as water-resistant as FQHH.

I concur with what Sloan above just said. My Sheene was made with russet vicenza that has a nice hand, drapes extremely well, and is well worth the upcharge. I didn't realize how nice the seal vicenza looks until I saw a friend's Premier HWM made with it.

I'm talking to Aero about ordering a Sheene and they haven't said it would be an issue not getting it from Thurston.

Personally I'd prefer to get it through Thurston and support them for their great customer experience in the past but the current exchange rate strength of the US$ vs $AUD is killing that idea.

Getting the right fit is a concern do both aero and thurston send out fit jackets so you can really get the best fit possible?

Only Thurston Bros. sends out Aero fit jackets.
Not sure where you live, but unless you really love thick heavy leather, I'd go Vicenza.

I don't think Aero do fit jackets as such, I haven't been offered one. It does make me wonder if I should sink the extra couple of hundred in for the Thurston service.

If I were in the UK, I'd make a weekend of it and head up to Aero. Try on everything you can and ask the for fit advice.

If you can, try on in person!
It makes SUCH a difference :)
I tried on a lot of jackets at Inspiration: some I loved but they weren't right for me. Others I was surprised by how good they looked on.

The Thurston fit process is the best thing going. If it's a possibility for you, you should absolutely do it. As to hide, for me personally, I want the heaviest, hardest, most bastardly leather available. Only CXL hides for me ( or comp weight from Vanson) If you want a more forgiving, easy wearing hide, which will take your form faster go with the other. I like the armor feel of CXL. Breaking it in is a process but one well worth the pay off!

Here are a couple of pics of Chris's Premier HWM in seal Vicenza that shows the color pretty well, although even his pics don't really do justice to how incredibly nice seal Vicenza is.

Both superb hides. I've handled the Vicenza and it feels plenty robust that it's not fragile. Softer new than FQHH, though that said, a few months of regular wear and the FQHH will have a very soft hand just like the Vicenza. The FQHH ages beautifully in both brown and Cordovan in my experience; I can't say how the Vicenza will change over time as I've not yet owned one. There is an upcharge for the Vicenza (GBP70, if memory serves), which might sway you one way or the other.

If you can get to try on a jacket to be sure about the sizing, it's worth it.

Are these white balance corrected?

It seems there is a lot of colour variation in Cordovan and i don't know if it is because of cameras and processing or if the hides vary so much.
Some look brown with some red undertones, some look dark purple, some look like black with purple undertones...

I have liked the idea of a cordovan jacket for a while but am afraid of the colour gamble.
