Some do, some don't. Many of us prefer the higher crown heights (5 1/2" plus when open) for just this reason. However, many of the shorter crown hats, such as Stetson Gun Club or some low crown pork pies will not clear your head. Many teardrop creases have a little dome in the middle to accomodate your head. I have a couple of hats that leave the furrow you're talking about - especially in the summer when you sweat a bit.

Having said that, a hat should be fully supported by the sweat band. It should rest on your head with the sweat band gripping your head, not fall down so the top of the hat is holding it up. A leather sweat band with a good fit will be much better than a cloth sweat in this regard.

I hate when the tip touches my head
I do everything I can to keep that form happening ... a small part of why I like tall crowns.
sometimes it is just the liner sagging ... but that still bothers me.
I have sold nice hats in the past simply because no matter how I adjusted the bash the inner tip touched my head.
not a fan.
... in a very rare case a hat I really love may touch my head so maybe I will throw a little reduction tape under the sweat to allow the hat to sit higher...

The crown of the hat should not sit on your head. The job of the sweat band is as the contact point for your head. Me thinks the hat is too large for you. Installing a leather sweat will make the hat slightly smaller but unless you love the hat it is not likely worth the money to upgrade.

What should I do with a stetson one hundred? I have a western one hundred with a 3 inch brim and one or two small moth nibbles on the back brim. It's a size 7. I'm a size 7 1/4.
Should I sell it?
Send it to a brass rooster to clean, restock and resize, reuse the band with a spacer and accept that the brim will be a little smaller, but I'll shape it more as a fedora?
Try to trade it for another one hundred in my size?
I'd like to keep it if I can.
Thoughts?

I'd figure two sizes up is a decent rebuild. New sweat band definitely and you'll lose some brim width. Probably some bucks, too.

I dunno, but for my part, especially if it's vintage, I would be inclined to unload it and try to find one in my size.

Just my opinion.

The 'hunnerds run on the large side, so it's not unfeasible to rebuild it in your size.

But, it will basically no longer have value as a vintage Stetson piece. It will be a very nice hat for you to wear, however.

Well, if you tear it apart to remake it to a much larger size and turn it into a wholly new hat that will not in any way be a "Stetson 100." If all you care about is having a nice hat, then it might be worth going to the $200 some bucks to remake it. But again., it won't be a Stetson. It'll just be a nice hat. Personally, I'd sell it to maintain its historical significance and put the money towards one that is more suited to what you want to do.

Or it could be an Imperial Quality Fed IV in Tawny Fawn. With the way the colors of these felt hats photograph, it's difficult to determine. And welcome to The Lounge!

I several questions and hope this is the right place. I would like a new hat, I have a 4X western Stetson in 7 1/2 long oval which is now a bit small. I have had it since the mid 1970's. I have not worn it in some time and have mainly worn Kangol flat caps but now would like something between the 2. Problem, who still offers a long oval in a fedora? Living in north central Mississippi limits choices in actual shops any suggestions on the wonderful internet?

Pavementends,the short answer is that LO isn't made any longer by the usual commercial makers.Any of the custom hatters here on the Lounge can do one easily.
The question is whether your hat has shrunk a bit or if you need a larger size.A measurement with a cloth tape would help.

I hate to change the subject, but I have a question regarding hat coloring. I have a nice 50/50 beaver/hare western in Silverbelly.
I love the hat and sometimes think of getting a duplicate made in either pecan or whiskey. I also have wondered if it's possible to dye a felt hat? If it is possible, how does it look? Will it bleed color if it gets wet? Thanks for your time and input!
