I know it is not about the golden era....but I saw this last night and really enjoyed it. What boy wouldn't like a movie about tall ships, swashbuckling and men on a quest?

It looked like a tough shoot. A movie that is much more fun to watch than shoot.

I am told that this from a series of books. It could be a problem if Russell's character is in the other books. I don't know if he would commit to doing many. Then again he may fancy being a captain of a ship.

Goodness, is Master and Commander twelve years old? I would have liked more in the series, perhaps an evolution to see the characters, particularly that of Maturin, develop a bit more like the originals in the novels.

A few years ago we had an intermittently-bad capacitor on one of the circuit boards in our in-booth audio monitor. The only way we could get it to work was to brute-force one of the particularly loud scenes from the "Master and Commander" DVD thru the channel at full volume -- the waves would roar, the cannons would boom, and POP, the sound came back and worked fine for the rest of the night. We did this every night for almost a year before I finally got around to a proper repair.

Peter Weir is a great film maker. I was just at the Australian Consulate for the 40th anniversary screening of one of his earliest, Picnic at Hanging Rock. Still a great movie and so hard to believe it came so early in a career.

Having read all twenty-plus books in the series three times over, I had to see the movie.

If you haven't read the books, the movie should be great. Having read the books, it didn't do much for me. Characters were all wrong for me. Jack Aubrey is (in the books) a big, imposing man. A slightly trimmer John Goodman would have been my pick. David Hyde Pierce would have been my pick for Maturin. They are very complex characters and the series is well worth the reading. My all-time favorites.

At any rate, the movie is kind of a mish-mash of three of the books. Master and Commander is the first book and the movie bears very little resemblance to it.

Watch the movie, enjoy it—then go buy Master and Commander by Patrick O'Brian and be prepared to purchase the next twenty+.

I saw the film a few years ago on a plane. I rather enjoyed it; Russell Crowe has rather a reputation for being a difficult fellow with whom to work (I suspect this may have something to do with the lack of sequels), but he remains a superb actor.

I saw it theatrically with my son when it came out, back when the Lord of the Rings films were still underway. When the midshipman(?) played by Billy Boyd took the helm, a voice from the back of the theater yelled in concern, "OH NO... Pippin's steering the boat!"

Hard to believe the film is 12 years old already. I thoroughly enjoyed the film and was sorry a sequel was never made. Great soundtrack too.

Master and Commander is one of those great old school action films like Last of the Mohicans, The Man Who Would Be King, The Lighthorsemen, Gallipoli, Breaker Morant, etc.

I'd have to say it's one of my favorite movies. It reminded me of an age of sail version of the original Star Trek. Which I guess makes sense, since Kirk was semi-based on another age of sail great, Horatio Hornblower. I still have hopes that they'll make a sequel, even if those odds are slim/none.

I just cover my ears and look away. About the only part of the movie that I cannot handle.
