Military 'woolly pully' sweaters

Maybe they do still issue them ....but I was under the impression they issue a fire resistant fleece now.

I have just returned home after a short holiday in the Lake District in North West England, noticed 4 other chaps all wearing either V neck or Crew/Round Neck Navy Blue WPs, including another member of my tour group, two railway drivers and the man who was sailing one of the lake steamers we travelled in.

I hope they still issue them. They certainly do here in the UK. Good that yo've got a few. You'll be getting them out when we're putting ours away.

Were you able to wear a WP yourself on that holiday? Here it's been too warm last week but it's sweater weather again and I'm enjoying wearing my black crew neck!

Yes I was wearing my navy blue roll neck WP all the time during the day when we were on excursions as it was quite cold up there.

I bought my 1st one for 50$ waaay back .....outgrew it and bought a more modern one a decade ago. You can buy em cheap still in disposals stores.

My bro In law is a unit ....wears one with nothing underneath ( he's kinda hairy so the wool probly doesn't itch)

I had one a few years back - 106cm; too many pies later I sold it on ebay. It was made in Penrith, NSW and was much better quality than the UK style.

I've been wearing an old bone coloured roll neck WP this week and a crew neck Bridgedale heather marl version over a heather roll neck in the garage and wondered what you think of the black and blue roll neck versions and whether they're worthwhile buying. I had some concerns about the quality of these.

What did you feel was not such good quality with the UK style/version? I have always found they are usuallu ok if made from pure wool.

I have both the Blue and Black outdoor knitwear woollen roll neck ribbed woolly pullies and I am very pleased with them, they fit well and are very warm indeed, I really like the high roll neck. I also have blue and ecru submariner roll woolend necks which I like too. In fact I am wearing the Ecru one now as I am about to do some odds and ends in the garden and it is still very cold outside.

They're a more robust knit than the UK versions, perhaps as they're Aussie wool...seemed to hold their shape better and were a more dense knit. The neck design is more of a shaped crew neck design and the shoulder patches at a deeper angle to the pit. Mine was made by the Elegant Knitting Co. I've seen some with Auscam patches too, not sure if those are the same manufacturer.

I do like the roll necks to, but the newer ones seem to get out of shape quickly and I think they're too short in the body - in my opinion they shouldn't ride up, but do. And am not a fan of Outdoor Knitwear's submariner jumpers either; their submariner is a poor relation to the Pick & Sons version I have and a nice 1965 issue I bought on ebay. Their neck line is a bit odd, lower and with that funny extra roll riding up in the front, as shown in the website's pics. Having owned their Niffi and the same version for Cabelas and not seen the same problem - I suspect these are a more modern design.

Yes perhaps they are using a newer design. The Submariner roll necks I have are a Navy Blue one which I bought from a firm called Grand Prix Legends who are based near Guildford in Surrey. It is a fine robust sweater. I Too do have an ecru Submariner roll neck by Pick & Sons and I agree with you, it it is an excellent Jersey. It does have a few marks on it, but fits well and is really warm.

You should cut back on the pies. ...
Did the Aus. WP have camo patches?

Not sure what the 'bone' colour is. I also have a Heather Mix WP, although I don't wear it as often as the other colours.

This season I have had quite a strong bias towards the Navy WP, followed by Peat Brown, Dark Grey Mix and Black. How about you?

I have the heather mix roll neck and 2 army green ones - a vintage version and a new one that has suffered a bit being worn camping & it's lost it's snugness / shape - hence my previous comments re. quality from OKW. Recently bought a vintage Pick and Sons army green crew without any patches - is very nice, and a vintage Bridgedale crew neck in heather mix. Lost count, but I think I've 10 or 12 of these...plus 3 of the versions that Commando / Bridgdale made for Barbour, sort of a heavier rib and with suede, or thick leather patches.

Yes, I recall the photo of the creamy white WP roll neck you posted here last year. Very nice. I have at least as many of these jumpers (sweaters to our trans-Atlantic chums) as you - like you I've lost count, but I have a wide variety of colours. I have just - following OKW's recent 20% off sale - taken delivery of an RAF blue crew neck Woolly Pully with epaulettes and pen pocket. It's nice to meet a chap who appreciates military sweaters as much as I do. Where did you go camping, by the way?

I've been enjoying the continuation of the cool weather because it means that I can continue to wear my Woolly Pullies for longer than expected! Other fans of the WP have told me the same thing.
