I think it's safe to say that, for the most part, and aside from the rare instances noted above, men in the US simply wore their hair very short. Differences were often noted, however, between British and American soldiers in both of the World Wars: the British often wore their hair much longer on the top than their American counterparts. I'm fairly sure this was true of civilian life as well.

Not particularly long but Charles MIddleton's hair in the film HELLS HIGHWAY 1932 would not look out of place today for a longish look. He plays an eccentric new age hippy type character.
