Im not sure if its my love of Dean Martin or what, but I always love having him playing in the background when doing my hair and make up.

I have my own AM radio station setup with a micropowered transmitter and an automated playlist, so there are programs that come on at the same time every day. When I'm getting dressed weekday mornings, it's usually to the accompaniment of Don McNeill's Coca-Cola Refreshment Club, a syndicated series from 1936-37, with Walter Blaufuss and his Orchestra and the vocal stylings of Clark Dennis and Helen Jane Belke. McNeill is, and always was, a hopeless cornball, but the music's upbeat and pleasant. It's essentially the same program as McNeill's more famous "Breakfast Club," but laced with commericals urging you stop everything right now and have a Coke.

I really like The Andrews Sisters and Etta James. Also, I tend to listen to the song One Mint Julep by The Clovers. I listen to it on repeat when I'm getting ready to go somewhere.

I kid. I love the kidlets but I swear all hell breaks loose when I try to set my hair. It's like the bathroom door being shut is the sixth seal of the apocalypse.

I like to play it when I'd setting my hair, but I tend to play it quite a bit - I think my husband could sing along to most of these with me! It's accidentally become my house cleaning soundtrack as well, haha! The formatting is a bit messed up, but hopefully it's readable!

At work, I listen to a Pandora station seeded from Eartha Kitt's "Just an Old Fashioned Girl", Rosemary Clooney, The Puppini Sisters, and Andrea Marcovicci (she's modern - well, more '90s, I think - but everything I've heard from her has been standards); other tracks I've thumbed-up are "Stormy Weather (Keeps Rainin' All The Time)" by Keely Smith, "In The Cool Cool Cool Of The Evening" by Bing Crosby, "Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu (Volare)" by Domenico Modugno, "Avalon" by Gaucho (modern group - if you try them out and like them, Duo Gadjo is another with a similar sound), "In The Meantime" by The Ditty Bops, "All I Want Is All There Is And Then Some" by Eartha Kitt, "Jump In The Line" by Harry Belafonte, and "A Little Girl From Little Rock" by Marilyn Monroe. It gives me a good mix of 1940s and 1950s pop and standards.

I really lean toward the standards side, because standards are in most cases just songs from Broadway musicals from the 1910s through 1940s (and I love Broadway musicals from the 1910s through 1940s). Jerome Kern is my favorite composer - he's not well known, but he wrote the music for "The Way You Look Tonight," "A Fine Romance," "The Folks Who Live on the Hill," "The Last Time I Saw Paris," and "They Didn't Believe Me," plus everything from Show Boat. There are some very good Kern albums out there: The Land Where The Good Songs Go is a revue based on his songs, I Got Love is an album sung by Rebecca Luker (beautiful soprano), and The Musicality of Kern is a studio collection. I'm also into the Gershwins, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Kurt Weill, etc.

Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks are a big band that seem to play in a lot of period movies that have scenes set in nightclubs or at big parties - I have a bunch of songs with them from the Boardwalk Empire and The Aviator soundtracks, and should probably look into seeing if they have their own CDs.

Oh! One more group I like - the Piccadilly Dance Orchestra. They don't just have a good orchestra but singers with very period-accurate styles.

My soundtracks tend to change over time. I will listen to nothing but my 40s faves on the computer or my phone, then one day I'll feel like nothing but surf rock, and I go with that for a few months, and then it will be all about schmaltzy lounge, I have playlists with various themes- songs about the sea, peppy, each era, vintage songs about sex and drugs- I have a large collection of vintage tunes on mp3. But right now, I'm in a phase I didn't see coming... really loving the exotica genre, with traditional Hawaiian music thrown in and some surf rock.

And for some reason, when tragedy strikes in the world, I can't always listen to music for some time. So I use old radio shows to live life to. Boston Blackie, My Friend Irma, Our Miss Brooks, Gildersleeve, Fibber, and Lux Radio Theatre are favorites.

Depends on my mood. I love the 1920's Radio Station. They play music from the 20's-40's. It's fabulous! Sometimes I listen to rockabilly or psychobilly, modern alternative, 80's, classic rock...it all depends on mood. Lately I've been on a Weezer kick. lol
