Double Diamond Gusset?

Hello everyone.
I acquired a vintage 3 piece double breasted suit the other day and will need some help dating it please.
I will post pictures later as I am rushed for time but for now maybe someone would please explain part of the pant assembly to me.

In case the picture isn't clear - there is a tiny diamond gusset right about the main one. It is quite small and I don't see how it would add enough more room in the pants to make it worth the effort of adding it.

Sometimes it's a way of cutting the fork when the cloth is too narrow to accommodate the width of both pattern pieces (the fork of the undersides can be long for some people/sizes. It's also a way of saving cloth in cheaper production.

The other possibility is an addition at a later stage of the making to add extra 'stride' room. This is only likely if the suit was made-to-order, bespoke (or however you want to call it).
