I visited Berlin in 1967 and Trier year before last. When we were in Trier, I went in a department store, mainly to shop for CDs of German music. What better place? I didn't find any of the particular artists I was looking for but I saw a fair number of American recordings. There were folk outfits in the windows, like dirndls and other Trachten outfits but I didn't buy anything.

German black three-piece suit... wonderful tailor-work from the mid-30's in very good condition.
Size is a UK 42 regular to short(ish) (25 in sleeves) with 38x31 in trousers.

The waistcoat has not 100% identical cloth but matches well with the suit.

If anyone is interested in more details let me know.

Hi Fastuni - I realise this is some time later now, but is the suit still available? And what kind of price were you thinking? Thanks!

Well... all features are rather typical for German/European late 1930's to mid 50's. The square, padded shoulders, the silhouette/waist-nipping, the zipper-puller...
in other words: I can't see a detail that would be totally contrary to the late 1930's.
I concur though, that it likely is from the post-war 1940's... but that's just gut-feeling.

I'd have to check my fashion publications from the era for early examples.

Here is a very similar Swedish jacket from 1949:

I recently received this 'semi-tux' from the US.

According to the seller it was worn by a German man for his wedding circa the 1950s. The waistcoat has contrasting trims, but the jacket is uniformly made of the same cloth, with no contrasting satin panels, making it look less formal.
According to Fastuni bowl buttons are indeed an indication of German provenance. Some of the other details are curious, the waistcoat having no back, but elastic straps. A later adjustment?
I can't understand how the trousers can be a part of this suit, as they are a tiny child's size, while the jacket is a 40-41.

Yes, trenchfriend it is a kind of Velours or Velveton... faux "Suede" made from Cotton.
Are you interested in this jacket? It's a slim Sz. EU 50 Long.

@Metatron

Very curious suit!

Perhaps the trousers were downsized by a tailor to fit a younger family member.

I am sure it is German... nice example of 1950's evening suit... a mix between tux and black Sunday's best.

******

Here rust-brown German flannel trousers.
Top tailor-work... but the best thing is the self-fabric belt with patented Gutos-buckle!

Those are lovely, Matt! I particularly like the anti-belly on the lapels on the anthracite suit, the way they almost bend IN. Really interesting look. Thanks for posting the photos!

That makes sense. The effect may be partially due to the fact that the lapel seems to want to roll slightly over that top button. Regardless, two beautiful finds! Congratulations!

I think that's true. And on the other hand the lapels/peaks slightly curve back to the shoulder when the jacket is "filled by the torso", whereas they're nearly flat on the hanger.
