The Bowler or Derby Hat

Thanks! If you enjoy the hunt you will find a vintage Stiff Felt with the dimensions that you are looking for. I specialize in German and Austrian Stiff Felts so more difficult because less survived WWII. Stiff Felts are less popular so usually less costly.

It's can be difficult getting dimensions from sellers. From experience I can get a pretty good idea from the photos on crown height and brim width. For size I ask for inside front to back and side to side measurements (I can also guess from the photos).

Well, what the hell, here is the Dunn & Co. I don't know the age, I thought I saw something that dates it 1950s. Any thoughts on age?

Size marked: 7 5/8" and 62

Length: 12 1/2"
Width: 9 14"
Crown: 4 1/2"
Front brim: 1 7/8"
Rear brim: 2"
Side brims: 1"

Ideally, I would like to find one 3 1/2" or 4" on the crown, and maybe something slightly smaller on the brim, but in my research, that brim seems quite unlikely.

Also, did we agree on a hat spray for these vintagish hats?

Equestrian bowlers tend to fall on the lower crown / shorter brim side. Heres one example an older Stetson with a cork liner with pretty modest brim and crown measurements.

The crown measures around 4 inches and the brim measures at around an inch and a half or so in the front and back. Your best bet would be to keep your eyes open for a dressage/equestrian bowler in your size.

I think late 1950s or a bit later is probably right.

See OCMH's post regarding possible solution. As I mentioned if you continue searching you will probably find something similar.

Don't spray anything on it.

With all the beautiful antique, rare and high end Bowlers in these 90+ pages to read, I humbly submit my first bowler. This Christie's of London is in overall good shape. The liner is stain city needing a cleaning, but I don't want to harm the beautiful logo crest which is clear and clean. Fit is a little tight, but Mike at NW Hats put all the LO she would take and the hat is now wearable. Probably the first of many. Now I need a true Derby, something made here in the US.

Latest addition...Cavanagh Derby. Cannot see year on sales receipt but I would imagine at least early 50s. One thing I've learned in addition to what is shared in this forum; Don't purchase one that would fit too snug as their stiff felts do not do not expand with ease!! :oops: As long it doesn't sit atop my noggin too far (which this one does not), I think it's beauty! :)
