Indeed he DID! Started here, (reputedly) in the first drum breakaway EVER in Carnegie Hall, January 16, 1938. After a slow start to "Don't Be That Way," (they were the first jazz concert ever held in the Classic venue, and Benny Goodman felt somewhat reserved and began with a bit too slow count) about halfway through the number Gene did a momentary break out, and the young crowd went bonkers, which of course called for more. Later playing "Sing Sing Sing," and closing the concert with "China Boy." A total of 23 numbers were played that night and changed Carnegie Hall (and Popular music) forever!
The links above are from the original concert! I still own the entire (3 volumes) concert on vinyl, purchased in 1970. Preparing today's post, I saw an Ebay offer of volume 2 (only) for $205. Still got it!!!

ETSY purchase from DaQuino Hats for roughly $80 shipped from Portugal. THE GODFATHER.
Great design. Round all the way versus a homburg which lifts upwards on the sides. My only complaint is the quality of felt. Tag says rabbit. I would have preferred a decent wool felt like a Baileys. I plan on emailing the hat maker to see if she has more options.
